Somewhere unknown in the dark depths of Solinus City

Kenneth O'Leary sat behind his desk looking at his son who was driving a toy car aimlessly across the desk in a complete world of his own. He smiled at the young boy before looking up at his wife and the man next to her.

"Have you heard anything from Bray yet?"

"No sir, he just vanished into thin air. I can't understand where he's suddenly gone." Joshua replied.

"Surely the cops wouldn't have got him, he's too good for them. He's smart. He almost thinks like a cop." Kenneth replied.

"What if he is a cop?"

"He's been with me for ten years, you think they'd let someone be undercover for that long without pulling him at some point. And he got so involved with selling. Not to mention killing Dom. He isn't a cop. That goes against everything he stands for and he'd be prosecuted for that as much as we would, cop or not. They have rules. He's no cop."

Joshua shrugged.

"Who's a cop, daddy?"

"No one. It's okay." Lena spoke rubbing her son's hair. "Bray was wild, maybe he crossed the line somewhere. You know what he was like, what if he pissed someone else off." Of course, Lena knew different. She knew Bray was alive and well.

"Well, he'll turn up sooner or later and either way we'll get answers from him. Take Devon out for the afternoon. He doesn't need to be in here when business is discussed like this." He spoke before dismissing them both.

He started talking with Joshua, his new lead man, as Lena picked up her son and left the room. Trouble was brewing and she knew that she had too get out of there, and soon. And it was time to call the one man that could organise it.

Brayden Drake.

A wisp of black smoke formed in the room across from Kenneth, rapidly manifesting into a humanoid shape that solidified until it became that of a young woman with dark purple hair. The last trails of the black smoke drifted off of her form as she opened her violet eyes to survey the room. Xyntha Kynvaelatre-Naeve let her gaze rest upon the man behind the desk, piercing in its intensity.

"O'Leary, what's this I'm hearing about one of your confidants being caught up in an investigation in Wing City?" she demanded, striding across the room towards his desk. Xyntha's position in Solinus was like a spider in her web. Officially, she was nothing more than a rich young woman with friends in high places, but in reality there was a lot more to her relationship with the authorities and criminals of the city than merely having their favour.

No, many of them were entirely wrapped around her little finger. With a few well-placed words, she could spell doom for half the city's underworld overnight. The same went for any mayor, police chief or official that overstepped their boundaries. Both a darling of the public eye and a ruthless manipulator behind the scenes, there were few in the city that could cross her without suffering for it.

"I do very much hope that your loose ends aren't going to draw negative attention here. You know how I hate mess in my city."

Joshua, as punishment for his fuck up, was the one to give Shanthi her relief for the short amounts of time for food and toilet breaks. He noted that she'd stopped eating the day before and today was the same. O'Leary was down his neck, having heard that Wing City were all over the case of the missing Volarian. Just because he had no one out there actively working now, didn't mean that he didn't have spies there telling him what was going on. After all, that's how he found out about Caleb.

"People are looking out for you, Joshua." O'Leary commented. "You know I hate been in the public eye."

"I'm sorry, boss." Joshua mumbled.

"It's a good thing that I have a meeting with a space pirate. I've got her a ride out of here. They can sell her on. I'll be getting a decent sum." He grinned a little.

Joshua breathed a sigh of relief. "What do you need me to do then?"

"Feed her. Go make sure she looks decent. I'm sure the space pirate will want her in a reasonable condition. Take Lena with you. Lena can clean her up."

"Sure boss." Joshua turned to leave.

"And Joshua. Just know you've had a lucky escape here."

"Yes sir."

---

"What did Kenneth want me to do?" Lena frowned, her son close behind.

"He wants you to clean her up. Make her presentable. And try to encourage her to eat." Joshua told his boss' wife.

Lena did not feel comfortable getting involved like this. She hated it. But there was nothing she could do. Soon her and Devon would be out of here though, away from this life.

Joshua opened the door and looked over at the prisoner. "Don't unchain her. Feed her if you can. And just make sure she's clean."

Lena nodded and quietly walked over to the chained girl, Devon quiet behind her. She knelt down once next to the girl. "Hi. My name is Lena and this is my son, Devon. I'm here to wash you. Is that okay? I have some food for you too." She added, dipping the sponge into a bowl of soapy warm water and rinsing it out.

Shanthi looked away as Lena approached her, not caring to entertain this newest effort to get her to eat. She was hungry and the smell of food enticing, but she was a stubborn one.

It wasn't hard though to take note of Lena's discomfort at the situation.

"Let me go," Shanthi told the woman.

Overhead her wrists were rubbed raw and infected from the iron shackles that kept her secured to the wall.

"You're not allowed to be let go." It was Devon that spoke from behind his mother. "Daddy says that you're bad and so need to go to a new home to be taught how to be good."

"Shhh, Dev. It's okay. Just stay quiet please." She didn't take the shackles off but tried her best to get to the cuts that were there and clean them for her. "I can't let you go, I'm afraid." She said quietly.

With that she continued to clean the woman up as best as she could. "They're going to sell you, soon." She said quietly so Josh wouldn't hear her. "You should eat, get your strength up. Maybe you will have a chance to escape there."

Shanthi curled her leg enough to kick the bucket over before looking away again as the warm soapy water spread across the cold floor.

"I will eat when they release me," Shanthi replied stubbornly.

Lena frowned as she saw what Shanthi did, but she couldn't blame the woman. She was kidnapped and been held to be sold. If Lena was in the same position she'd probably be the same.

"I'm sorry that I can't do anything." She said quietly. "But I can't free you."

"Josh! Look what she did!"

"Leave her, Lena. If she's going to be like that, then she can explain to her new owner why she's looking like shit. Maybe he'll treat her like shit because of it." Josh answered.

Lena frowned and looked at Shanthi. "They're not going to let you go. Eat so you have the strength to escape if the opportunity arises." She told the woman before gathering everything and leaving.

---

Josh moved back to O'Leary's office. "Lena cleaned her as best as she could. But the bitch was messing about and knocked everything over."

"Forget it. The pirate will be here soon enough." O'Leary answered.

"Bray!" Devon shouted, running up to the man as he met his ex-boss' wife. Bray frowned a little, hearing his son call him Bray instead of dad hadn't stopped hurting. But hopefully now Bray had them safe and that they could sit Devon down and explain that Bray was his father. Not Kenneth O'Leary. Years of undercover work, had led him to become O'Leary's right hand man, and eventually led him to sleep with the man's wife.

Bray had crossed so many lines. Not just with that boss, but with the police department he'd been with when undercover. He'd broken all the rules.

It didn't matter now, he was out, and though he'd messed up with Alyssa, and trying to get his way there, he still had a job at least. And he'd keep it. And stay straight now that Lena and Devon were with him.

"Hey there little man, how are you?" He grinned picking the four year old boy up.

"I'm good. Mom says we're living with you now." He grinned.

"That's awesome!" Bray grinned.

When Lena arrived he kissed her cheek before leading her back to his apartment, the third apartment block on the street. "It's not much but I've gotten a room for Devon sorted." Bray stated unlocking his door and walking inside with Lena. "We'll go shopping for both you and Devon. Get everything you need. I'm sorry you couldn't bring much here with you. I wasn't sure of tracking devices and all that. I might get you to throw that bag of stuff away and those clothes, just to be sure." He told her.

"That's fine." Lena didn't want to be found.

Outside the house, a strange black sedan was sitting and idling while Vulpes watched through a pair of binoculars. This was the man the Frumentarii Infiltrator in the WCPD had told him to look for.

And now that Vulpes was here, he put the car in park and put on his sunglasses, which accented his dark brown suit and bow tie, and matching fedora with a red feather stuck in the brim.

Vulpes was out of the car now, and he had straightened his brown jacket while moving up towards the house. He was armed but it didn't show, with the Seburo BoBson concealed in his jacket, along with a myriad of other weapons. He also had forged documents on him if he needed to identify himself as some kind of official.

As he approached the front door, he gave three audible knocks, and waited for an answer.

Bray was also armed under his hoodie and jeans. He had two guns and a knife on him, as always. But Lena and Devon didn't need to know that. It was all to do with his undercover work and how he'd been trained. Always stay armed. Bray was a wary and careful person, suspicious of everyone and everything, and he'd noted the black sedan with little interest, but he had noted that it was there. He wasn't worried though. His files were confidential and classified.

When there was a knock on the door, Bray frowned. Only Alyssa knew he lived here. He wasn't expecting her. He handed Devon over to Lena and made sure she was out of the direct path when he opened the door. He didn't open the door wide, and had one hand behind him, settled on a handgun stored there. He frowned as he saw the man there that he didn't recognise.

"Can I help you?" Bray simply asked.

Maybe it was one of O'Leary's detectives. Someone he hadn't met before.

Vulpes peered into the door, his eyes meeting Bray's. This man would pose a challenge. "Brayden Drake, I'd like a word." He said calmly, before he slowly reached into his jacket, and then he withdrew a cigarette.

"Before you shut the door in my face, there's a nuclear warhead somewhere in this neighborhood set to go off unless I disarm it. I have ample time to clear the blast radius but I doubt you would be able to clear the blast radius in time." Vulpes said without even flinching.

"Step outside and have a word with me, tell your family I'm an old friend. I'd hate to set off this bomb and have un-needed bloodshed."

Bray frowned at the man's words, but he didn't want to get Lena and Devon hurt. It was a big lie. Bray was sure of it. Who in their right mind would have a nuclear warhead in the city? In fact, why wouldn't he have heard of it before now, if there was.

"Hey, Lena, I just need to talk to this guy. Friend from work, I'll be just outside. Make yourself at home, look in the rooms and everything. I'm just going to be outside this door. Won't be too long. Just need to sort out a small problem. Sorry about this." Bray told her before stepping outside and closing the door behind him.

He glanced at the man that had interrupted his family time and frowned. "A nuclear bomb? Is that the best you got? Either you have a bomb on you right now, or you're lying for another reason. So, what do you want?" Bray wasn't impressed. His hand kept a good grip on the gun behind him. Bray was a skilled liar, he knew when to lie to get something he wanted. This man wanted something with him. All Bray had to do was find out what it was.

Vulpes nodded back to the car, pulling his jacket only slightly to reveal a detonator of some kind. He wasn't lying.

"I stopped by and visited an old friend of yours, I should have nailed him to the wall and left him to die, but I wanted to save the best for later." Vulpes said, tossing a photograph of a bloodied and dying Joshua towards Brayden. Taken with a small pen camera in Vulpes' jacket.

"I'm looking for someone, and in the course of my investigation, this man mentioned you by name, He also mentioned an O'Leary. I want to know more about this O'Leary and where to find him. So let's make this fairly straight forward. I'm looking for a woman, a big winged woman, kinda hard to miss. And a little birdie told me that a human trafficking ring is involved. One you may or may not also be involved with, So it's simple, you tell me something useful, and you never see me again." He then peered to the house.

"If you deceive me, I pray that the insurance policies of your lover and child are paid up, because i will have them both scourged and crucified on your front lawn."

Bray took the photograph, frowning as he looked at the man. Joshua? What the fuck was going on? "I know of this guy, but I haven't seen or talked to him in a long time. I have no idea what shit he's gotten himself into, but I'm out of that. I have been for a while. The only reason I know of him is because I spent a long time doing undercover work. I've been out of that for a while now."

He sighed. "O'Leary has a business in Solinus, Human Trafficking. That's all I can tell you about him." Okay so that wasn't the whole truth, but Bray wasn't going to make himself a prime target for O'Leary to find him, his own wife, and Devon. "I have no idea if they took the woman you are looking for, don't care either, but they often trade them on the Wing City Black Market. Or that's where they were trading them when I was there."

Bray handed the photo back over to Vulpes. "I'm sorry that I can't be of more help. But I've been out of that for a while now. I have no idea what they're doing. That's all I know."

Vulpes frowned, he didn't like this one bit. He was getting nowhere.

"Do you love your family?" Vulpes asked, as he took a laser pointer and pointed it in what seemed like a random direction, a Frumentarius on a nearby rooftop was poised and lying in wait.

An Aschen fuel rod cannon was leveled on the house below as the second Argosian agent got a good firing trajectory.

"A pity that's all you know, because you never told me anything useful." Vulpes said, slowly backing away from the house but not turning his back on Brayden. "Perhaps I should squeeze Joshua of more information, unless you're willing to help me find O'Leary so I can close this case."

A red dot appeared on the side of the house, one that could be clearly seen, it was obvious someone was aiming something at the house.

As soon as this guy was gone, Bray was moving his family. "I told you! He's in Solinus City! I don't know anything about the girl you're looking for. Why did he even give you my name? I don't get it. I haven't seen this guy in nearly a year. Why would he just give you my name, when I haven't been undercover in a year?"

Bray was frustrated. "O'Leary is living in Solinus. I can't give an address because I don't know it." He knew it. Lena and Devon knew it. But for their safety he couldn't give it. Heck, he didn't even know if O'Leary was still at the same place. Bray had disappeared from them suddenly. He'd upped and left without a word and now O'Leary was hunting for him, deeming him MIA.

"Look, tell me why you questioned Josh in the first place about this woman's disappearance? Maybe with insight to what they're like I can give you information that will help you. Whatever reason he bought my name into this, it was a lie. I have nothing to do with this missing girl. I'm not sure he has, but if you tell me why you questioned him, maybe I can help."

He saw the red dot and frowned. Lena and Devon were in there. He couldn't get them out of there. He needed to get them out of there!

Vulpes simply shrugged. "It is the way things are, you did not provide me with useful information, so I have seen it fit to terminate your family."

Vulpes stopped short of the street to answer his question. "Because she was kidnapped from some very powerful people, and my employers have seen it fit to go through any means to recover her. Josh was a lead, you are a lead in bringing this woman safely back to where she belongs."

He held up his hand, staying the oncoming attack for just a moment.

"You tell me something useful, and I will spare your family. If you cannot, or you don't know, then I pity you. But i grow tired of these games. Solinus is a big city, you're not helping me so I have no choice but to punish you for your ignorance, or perhaps..."
Vulpes' eyes narrowed.

"Your deception."

"I'm telling you, I don't know why he said my name!"

Bray knew nothing about the missing woman, or the events that led up to Joshua being a lead. He was running out of options here. He needed to save Lena and Devon. They were right there, in his apartment, somewhere he'd thought was safe and because of some idiot he used to work with had mentioned his name in something he wasn't involved in, Bray had no idea what to do or what he was now involved in.

"Why did Josh become a lead? He knows where O'Leary lives. I know he knows because he's O'Leary's right hand man. He goes in and out of that guys house in Solinus all the time." It was time to drop Josh in it. Bray was telling the truth. He had people he kept tabs with, that told him what O'Leary was doing and stuff, but he knew nothing of this. Little did he know that both Lena and Devon knew about this woman and had both seen her.

"I don't know why he said my name. You haven't told me why he gave my name, or what he accused me of doing, to lead you to me about this missing woman. How am I supposed to give useful information when I have no idea where this girl went missing, when she was taken, how she was taken or what Joshua has even told you to lead you here. The least you could do is give me those answers so that I can tell you where I was, and what I was doing that day."

Vulpes shook his head. "I think you misunderstand. I want O'Leary, He will lead me to the woman." Vulpes said. "I don't suspect you were directly involved with the disappearance, I know that you're a cop. You will find that I know a great many things." Vulpes explained.

"I should have let Joshua die, he'll be impossible to find now and follow up." He then looked Brayden square in the eye, to try a different approach.

"I need you to go undercover again and bring me to O'leary. If you do that I can provide protection for your family. But I must bring this case to a close."

"I can't go back undercover." Brayden frowned. He was asking the impossible. He'd be questioned, the mistrust. He knew where O'Leary lived... He couldn't give the address though. Not with Devon and Lena at risk.

"I can't go back there. But if you give me your contact details then I can call around some old friends that do owe me favours. See what I can find out about this girl and where O'Leary is. I can't promise you anything. All I can do is try. I can give my family the protection they need. And I'm trying to help. But you're not helping. You still haven't given me anything on the case."

If only this guy knew what Bray had done, he wouldn't be simply saying he wasn't involved because he was a cop. Bray had broken every rule of the book when undercover. He'd crossed, double-crossed and triple-crossed people. Of course, his files wouldn't state that because they didn't even know what he'd done.

"Are you really going to kill two innocent people because one person doesn't know anything? A four year old child, one of them? They have nothing to do with this and neither do I. Making threats against me is one thing, but against a woman and child that I care about is another thing. I am trying to help you. Now give me the information on the case that I want, so that I can try and understand why I was fucking dragged into something that I know nothing about!" Bray was getting frustrated and angry at this man.

And he was afraid that because he had no idea what this guy was talking about, that his lover and his child would be killed as a consequence.
