Lewis Johnson

When shit goes south it's my job to be on point.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by lil_kreen

Description

In every egineering department of sufficent size and productivity there sometimes arises the one engineer that the others turn to when things go bad. Whether it's an impending explosion nearly abated and noticed just in time or trained reflexes putting a round through pirate heads. The fellow who multitasks engineering manuals as audio-books at the firing range. He lives and breathes the ship he's on and never turns down a task because he feels himself unfit. If a dirty job needs doing he might bring privates with him but he never sends them alone simply because of what needs doing. He's got a weak spot for female medics and they keep him alive as he's got his share of burns, bullet holes, and scars but his first love has always ever been the ship he's on. As fit as he keeps himself and his excellent genes he's been a bit of a heartbreaker at times.

Noted to his file through many chief engineers as the "the last intractable bastard surviving an apocalypse with a rebuilt hemi and improvised shotgun. God help us if we need to replace him." That would be Lewis. He's only held leadership informally, having no stomach for diplomatic solutions to problems, though generally those actually holding the role often give him a fairly long leash. The remainder of his crewmates rapidly learn to first evaluate in an emergency where Lewis is going and whether they want to follow or run the opposite way. It is, generally, the latter among many. He frequently holds a amicable relationship among the security crew though he only works with them in dire emergencies. His love for the ship is a thing that ever needs maintenance.

Skills:
  • Electrical engineering
  • Mechanical engineering

  • AI and intelligent agent repair
  • Small and Medium arms: construction, modification, and repair.
  • Combat armor and maintenance
  • Heavy and light exoframe training
  • Hazardous environment training
  • Zero-g combat training

So begins...

"Attention all adult passengers of the Auroragon, please report to the Bridge immediately for an urgent meeting."
The message ran through the com of the ship, projected from the bridge. Joruv Komfiev's calmed voice pules through the airwaves. The passengers of the Auroragon had many things to discuss. Politics, education, economy. They had been in space long enough now, and the Ratus Messis wasn't anywhere in sight. Shaselia had closed the book long ago on the magic plant that would take them to Haevenia, the promised land. They would of course keep the eye out, but right now their destination was habitable land, and a future.

Lewis Johnson arrived still mostly coated in grease having just climbed out from the engine maintenance schedule. It was a dirty task but lubricating valves and checking for microfissures in lines was one of the Necessary Evils for the engineering staff. Cramming into a small tube and crawling around was definitely a full contact sport. He listened to Joruv as Lewis tried to brush off the caked-on dust.

The news sent a gasp around the room. Joruv remained at his post, glaring deep into space.

"We do what we must," and then turning to Lewis, "Thank you."

"We're going to need more hands in the garden," Shaselia decided to get moving sooner than later. She shot a glance around the room, welcoming others to join her. There was a lot to do. Food had to be properly rationed. She took one last puff from her pipe and motioned it towards Lewis.

Maniria moved to follow Shaselia, Let the others decide where to go. I'm not even sure I care anymore.

I suggest finding an asteroid belt first. Preferably iron-magnesium so I can rebuild hull spars. Gardening needs trace minerals. We had to harvest a lot of the heavy drilling motors just to keep sewer and water running.

Hudon Caverok swore and left the room. This meant their air system was at risk. On his way out he clapped a hand on Lewis's shoulder, giving him a hard nod.

"An asteroid belt...Shouldn't be too hard to find, eh?" Derud Bagain, ever hopeful of their cause, crossed the room to press himself against the glass viewing space beyond. Despite everything, they were here.

Lewis nodded and found a chair to fall into. He didn't know for sure when he'd slept last. Too long, certainly. Spare parts were hard to find but some things could be repurposed.

Hudon came to a halt in the doorway. His mind churned for a solid minute, then he whirled on the spot.

"You have something there. You do. Come, will you, assist?" He called over his shoulder before leaving the bridge. It was nice to have someone else technical minded on this ship - maybe even more so than he, with a solution like that. Reven, was his name? That Lewis fellow was on to something, too.

Derud Bagain beamed around the room, his smile met with a halfhearted one from Meson and a nod from Joruv.

"Lewis!" Derud broke the silence, "How goes sleeping?" he asked despite seeing that the man was at lack there of. Anything to keep spirits high, lest they all succumb to depression aboard this ship, in deep space, with no set destination, with no home to go back to, with a limited supply of food...but nonetheless with eachother. The last of their planet.

Joruv looked to the door, he could have sworn he heard footsteps approaching. Could there be a stowaway? He shook his head, but kept an eye towards the entrance.

"So....asteroid belt?" Joruv addressed the remainder of the room. It seemed their best bet to set course for one, based on Lewis's input.

He replied to Derud with a smile but the wandering jerky eyes belied someone staying awake by force of will alone, "I get it where I can but there's parts to make and miles of service tunnel to go before I sleep. At least now I can without worrying about waking up again. So you can now too."

Lewis stood up and stretched as Hudon invited him on, "Sure thing. I mean they'll be power inefficient as all hell for the cubic footage output but they'll run like tanks having to push fluid that light pretty much anywhere but humidity control. Water on the short list for things heavy as coolant. Axel deformation and worn-out bearings won't matter for that little rotational load anywhere else."

It happened, like it always seems to do, in the middle of what could be considered night. All but one asleep. Keeping watch over the bridge had been an almost tedious task. No one had yet lost hope;no one expected anything either.

At first, Meson couldn't be too sure. They've had three false alarms. Space debris from somewhere twice, they yearned to know from where. Nothing salvageable. Strange, twisted golden metals unlike any they had ever seen before. They were moving too fast, and the humble inhabitants of the Auroragon were not yet prepared to venture beyond the old vessel they called home.

The third time it was just a big rock.

Then the blip happened again and Meson's heart fluttered. There was certainly something on their radar. By the time he calculated the speed, his nose was a hair from the meter and his insides were jumping with joy. Meson erupted from his post, out the Bridge, down to the barracks, straight to Joruv Komfiev's portal.

They were off in just less than an instant. Soon, all were awake and ready to mobilize. What was the blip steadily heading towards them, and from what horizon?

Outside of the viewing window came a flash of blue light. Out of the light came a small scout ship it kept it's place just sitting there. It began to scan the Auroragon looking for life scans on the ship.

Joruv Komfiev sat silent at command control. There was a strange craft hovering not far from them, and it would appear they weren’t alone after all. The Auroragon travelers had, for the majority, convinced themselves that they were alone in this Universe.

Phetalia, who had snuck onto the bridge, knew better than to be so ignorant. Her heart pounded as she memorized the view in space.

“Can we... Can we contact...?” Derud Bagain bit his nails. Joruv nodded slowly after a pause. They had communication capabilities, untested as of yet.

“We should,” Shaselia placed a hand on Joruv’s shoulder. He closed his eyes, opening them a minute later. From where she hid, Phetalia witnessed every adult present exchange the same look.

Joruv reached forward and flipped a switch. It was now or never. Everyone held their breath as he leaned in to the mic to speak.

”GREETINGS AND PEACE. ”

Another blue flash and another ship like the first but about four times larger (the first ship was roughly 35 meters long) appeared over shadowing it's smaller counterpart.

Suddenly a glowing figure appeared in front of the gathered crew. She was a slightly smaller in height than a human though she looked almost just like one until you noticed the pointed ears. She had a black uniform on that matched the color of her hair her grey eyes seemed to stare right though you.

"Do Not be alarmed I am Nyaidia Sliverblade of the Lakkadian Remnant. You can speak to this Hologram as if i was there in the flesh... We also wish you Greetings and Peace. We are scouts sent out to find a new home for our people..." Nyaidia's face looked sad. "Our home was lost to us when our Sun went supernova. We and the fleet that sent us are the last of the Lakkadian people."

The Auroagon bridge was swept with a murmer of excitement. The people of the Auroragon had also lost their home, and were the last of their people. Maniria Caverok screeched as the larger ship suddenly appeared.

“Nyaidia Silverblade,” Joruv began, holding out an arm to signal everyone to quiet, “We extend the deepest of sympathies, as our tales are very much the same. Our home world was destroyed due to the ignorances of our governing bodies. We, too, quest for a new home.”

Phetalia scrambled from her place to grab the other young members of the Auroragon. They had to see this!

Lewis appeared a bit late as a ventilation duct roared to life. The air quickly became less stale as it recovered from the breathing of all the crew in one place. Baffles flapped throughout the ship as load redirected away from empty rooms.

He quipped though thoroughly exhausted and stared at the hologram while reporting to the captain, "Well, at least if we all gasp at once at you miss Silverblade, we won't all faint now."

He eyed the captain here to report first as well as see what was going on, "Life support is back up to 90% and shouldn't brown out if we run the engines."

The Hologram of Nyaidia Sliverblade nodded "I see... and this is the only ship that made it off your world? i'm so sorry...while most of our people perished in the Nova's blast we got a way with several millions of our kind spread out over over a thousand ships..."

After Lewis rushed in and gave a report to the Captain Nyaidia's hologram said "Perhaps we can help each other?"

"Affirmative. We are the only survivors," Joruv nodded to indicate he received Lewis's data. Shaselia moved from her seat besides Joruv to give Lewis a seat, relieved of the good news. She leaned in to Lewis, whispering questions about the hydroprocessor. Last checked it was fine, but running a tad slower than it had been.

A whisper spread around the room at the mention of help. Derud had a big smile on his face, but the rest seemed wary. Maniria pointed and whispered of pointed ears to Ephalia, who frowned. The two continued to murmur to one another. Derud elbowed his wife Ephalia who shot him a sharp look. He cleared his throat and aimed his smile to Shaselia, who half returned in through her whispers. Wasn't this glorious news, he thought to himself, here they had thought they were completely alone only for another who shares their fate to-

"Aliens!" Opum grinned as he, Phetalia, and Wolov appeared in the portway for the Bridge. Derud's smile flipped one-eighty. He moved to block the view of the hologram but was massively unsuccessful. Phetalia didn't listen as he scolded her, leading Opum through the adults to get a closer look at the Hologram. Wolov stayed behind. He lingered by the door, speechless at what was happening before him. Numb to the thought of not being alone in the Universe, having made himself content with the depression that came with the loss of his home and family.

"So jet, Hi!" Phetalia waved to the hologram, Derud snatching her hand and yanking her back to him.

"Assistance would be ideal, perhaps we could conduct a trade, of resources?"

The Auroragon didn't have much, but it did have vegetation native to Norvnu, and perhaps some other resources available for trade. Lewis would likely be one of the best to speak further on anything needed for the Auroragon's continued survival.

Lewis responded quietly once sitting down patting his aching legs and resisting the urge to sleep, "The system works okay but the electrodes eroded and the tanks are rusting out. We're running the ozone purifier on carbon electrodes since they don't degrade. The originals were platinum but they don't last forever. I could use some high quality aluminum oxide pump seals to rebuild broken things all over the ship. They take a lot more power than I can spare to forge even if I have the materials. Even spare power would get me a few repairs the plasma welders suck up a lot of juice."

His raised brow peered at Opum with a smirk, "We can't go home anymore. We can't be anything but aliens or meet anything else. Engineering, science, and mathematics figured a long time ago that there aren't enough unique parts to not be more life out here somewhere."

An unquenchable optimist he shrugged at the alien woman, "Given other options of self-destruction and isolation some assistance sounds like a better option to me."

"Right... well tech issues are not my field... my skills lie elsewhere..." Nyaidia said her hand absentmindingly taping the unusually thin bladed dagger on her belt. The deadly Sliverblade from which her clan got it's name.

"But with your permission Myself and a small group of engineers will travel over to your ship we can meet face to face and see how we may help each other." Nyaidia stated and waited for an an answer.

Outside the smaller of the two Lakkadian ships was orbiting and silently scanning the Auroragon.

Shaselia nodded, calculating ship operations with the new information provided by Lewis. It wasn't the best of news. She looked hopefully to Nyaidia, "Thank you," and then to Lewis with the ghost of a smile. Maybe they weren't in the worst shape, after all. They had no idea who these aliens were, or where they came from, but their stories were one and the same. Joruv gave his wife a peck on the cheek. His hands danced across the control panel as he prepared the loading bay for depressurization.

"Permission to board granted," Joruv said to Nyaidia, "It's at our humblest request that any weaponry remain peace tied. What are the atmospheric conditions optimal to your survival? We are at...22% oxygen. Loading bay depressuri-"

"First!" Phetalia shoved her way through the crowd towards the door. Derud grabbed at her and failed, earning a hopeless look from his wife. He smiled sheepishly at a glowering Maniria. Opum and Phetalia barreled from the room. They excitedly grabbed at Wolov, who didn't mirror their excitement but played along regardless. The three kids rushed off to the loading bay to greet the aliens.

Joruv swiveled to the surveillance controls. He flipped the viewscreens to display the loading bay. He hit another button, holding it down. On the screen the doors slowly began to open.
