His nose was buried in a Transfiguration book, eyes occasionally darting upwards and around in an agitated manner. It was such a lovely day and all Liam really wanted to do was go back to the dormitories, set aside his textbooks and relax in the sunshine.

But no. His supposedly loving sister had told him that if he didn't stay on top of his homework, she'd make his life unpleasant. So here he was, bored out of his mind when...

“Ginger!”

The sunlight that crossed his vision almost half-blinded him outright, a hand coming up to shield his eyes carefully, squinting to see a happy, delightful little dog prancing around with a ball not five feet from where he was languishing.

”Hey, you look like you're having fun there,” he said towards the puppy before looking across for the source of the voice, finding it in a girl who looked around his age, sitting on a bench nearby.

“Hello!” he called out in a more natural language – common.

Liam Oldburn laughed as the playful dog bounded over, relishing the excuse to abandon his textbooks and reached up to give Ginger's ears a ruffle as he went to pick up the ball, sitting up as he did so.

“No you haven't,” he replied to Tessa, grinning at her as he tossed the ball a fair distance away, using his free hand to shake the girl's offered one firmly. “I'm Liam; just started here today actually. It's a pleasure to meet you!”

“Your dog's adorable,” Liam commented randomly after listening to Tessa's little tirade, chuckling and waving a hand towards his textbooks, open and piled precariously on the ground. “Me neither. My sister's fault; she doesn't want me getting hurt. I mean come on, what can I do... blow up a classroom at worst? I'm barely getting the hang of all this.”

At her suggestion that things were dull around here, the young boy grinned again, eyes darting over to her little dog, who had just caught up with the ball. “Well, how about we hang out during free time? I've not made any friends yet and you seem friendly.”

He chose not to answer the last part, instead focusing on Ginger and smiling.

Oddly, Liam looked impressed at that statement, for he wasn't of the control yet to be able to even attempt blowing up a classroom, let alone actually doing it. “Ha, I guess not!” He didn't seem the littlest bit perturbed by her antics, grinning still.

“If the spell worked, surely that proves you're getting better?” he agreed before frowning at her next query. “I... erm... I can go to the city as long as I ask my sister first... and stay away from Gambit's. They are my two rules for leaving the academy alone.”

He looked slightly upset at this, but once Natalie had chosen a few choice horror stories about the bar, he had been sufficiently cowed into obedience.

His curiosity was fleeting, but reminiscent of his sister's own engaging interest in well... everything, but she had been quite firm and she was a professor here. It wouldn't do to show her up. “Bars don't let you in if you're under eighteen here? How weird.”

It was anyone allowed in back home, as long as you were supervised and didn't drink, but he lost his train of thought listening to Tessa's... story, eyes widening a touch. “Heh, my sister's a Diviner and I wouldn't put it past her to scry me!” He looked both knowing and disappointed at that. Maybe once or twice?

She couldn't watch him all the time after all! Natalie had work to be doing! “I'm glad you didn't get sold in slavery, because I wouldn't have met you then.” He didn't seem terribly enthusiastic about getting kidnapped himself, somehow, though a smile touched his lips at her suggestion. “I think Natalie meant I should have an adult around with me.”

Two potential adults around? Hmm... he might be able to swing that with Natalie, given time and trust building with said adults. “Almost, but not quite and I think she is too, but after all that's happened, her arguments do have basis,” he explained, shrugging off quite a few traumatic experiences. After all, his parents were dead now and even though it killed him every time he thought of that, he couldn't do them proud if he sat around moping, could he?

“Your Aunt sounds fantastic; sorta like my uncle Juoram and really, you turned someone into a newt? That's really cool!”

Cool. He'd begun picking up the slang from the other kids apparently, Liam looking down at the dog with a touch of concern. Intuitive little thing, he thought, bending down to give it a pat. ”Give her a lick. The ball'll still be there once she feels better, right?”

His voice hummed as he spoke a rather unique language to the creature, glancing up at Tessa with a bold smile.

Thankfully, Liam could take a hint, smiling sheepishly up at her at the query. “Is that what it sounds like to humans? No one's ever told me before,” he said cryptically, straightening back to normal height, which probably meant he towered over Tessa.

He had obviously upset her somehow and felt regret but pushed those thoughts firmly aside, keeping his mood light. “I can talk to animals. They don't talk back but still, it's pretty neat I think.”

Liam Oldburn had apparently come to the same conclusion, laughing as he knelt down to gather his books up in a jumbled pile in his arms. “So, you're allowed to visit a potentially dangerous bar but not allowed to drink, cast or talk to demons?” A grin. “You got some really odd rules. You must have a lot of fun when you bend them.”

Headmistress Dae. He liked her enough; reminded him of his sibling a touch. She was just another professor really. “Uh, well I can cast normal magic too, but I'm forbidden from casting outside of lessons until it's under control,” he admitted, rubbing a free hand at the back of his head, embarrassed.

“How about you? Do you specialise?” There seemed to be genuine interest in his voice; she was shaping up to be a lovely girl.

Not working right? Unconsciously, he shifted slightly away, though the grin never faded from Liam's face. His eyes lit up in amusement, wondering what would happen if he tried to cast independently at the moment. Probably something much worse, no doubt!

“A dark mage? Do they... cast with the lights off or something?” he asked innocently, really having no clue about the more dubious uses for magic. Maybe dark mages were those who... had darker colours for their auras?

He had been here only a day after all. In his musings, he missed the continuous past tense use, smiling carefully at Tessa. “I'm sure she'll be very proud of you, no matter what you do. She cares about you a lot, it seems!”

Well done genius, Liam thought to himself, finally seeing the look of anguish flicker briefly across Tessa's face. First person you meet outside of class and you upset her. “Yeah and I should probably finish this work before my sister grills me. I'd definitely like to hang out with you sometime though. You can show me around the city!”

He sounded quite enthusiastic; he really didn't want to end up with no friends and studying all the time. That was not him at all.

Success! He seemed to have perked her up as she turned to leave, he nodded quickly, beaming. “Yeah; on Sunday if you can,” Liam replied, giving a special wave towards Ginger before looking up at the clock to notice... class soon himself.

If he ran, he might just be able to figure out where the classroom was before it started. Maybe. He set off at a dash, waving one more time towards Tessa before disappearing around a corner.

Liam Oldburn had absolutely no idea what to make of everything that was fantastical and at the same time strange in Gambit's. He had, of course, been to taverns back home with his father but this... this was quite bewildering, just about coming to his senses to tell Tessa that he had absolutely no idea what a demon even looked like, nor a gun. Of all the inquisitive youths to bring to this bar, eh?

“Kidnapped?” he repeated, awe in his voice but terror in his mind. Not that he would let that show; Tessa was his only friend so far and plus she was a girl. He would rather humiliate himself for being stupid than admit to being more afraid than her.

The thought of making his sister angry made him laugh, for in truth, the younger Oldburn had never seen her truly livid, but the name of their headmistress put cold fear into his expression, nodding solemnly. “Well... Tessa... what do you do around here for fun then?”

Hopefully not getting kidnapped.

“Well, they used to give me ale back home, but it was always watered down. We could try?” Liam admitted proudly with a smug grin, trying not to look at the scars. He was oddly fascinated and trying not to show it, blinking at her statement about Jared.

“Then, shouldn't we leave now, before you get into more trouble with Headmistress Dae?” he questioned, though his eyes were bright with interest, taking a few steps into the bar but careful to keep Tessa within his sight.

Liam Oldburn obviously said something dreadfully funny in reply to that rather obscure comment about demons before his player needed to go. Damn curses and illnesses, so he exited promptly, grumbling about not getting to spend time in the fun new place with his even more fun - and slightly crazy - friend.

For such a slight girl, Tessa certainly had some strength in her, Liam's firmly flat feet keeping him a few moments before he stumbled a few steps after the insistent girl, shaking his head firmly. “Tessa, she can only give you detention! If she found out I went back there...”

He shuddered. Natalie had this horrible face she made when she was disappointed in him and he couldn't stand it, even if it meant fun with his energetic friend. “Alright... we can be careful around the fights,” he seemed to consent before reaching out his free hand to tug her back towards him. “By not going to the bar.”

Liam tried to hold back a grin at her constant pleas. “Oh... fine!” he snapped without any heat to his voice, just as the young sorceress released his hand but he hardly noticed, flinching at the cries for help. His eyes darted around for the source, finding it in a rather bloody woman, unnerved by both her appearance and Tessa's reaction.

“Y... yeah!” he stammered, glancing towards the alleyway hesitantly. Whoever did that... were they still coming after her? He came up behind Tessa's, paling visibly at all the blood before nodding swiftly. “Hold on miss; I'll go find someone to help.”

He gave his friend a brave smile, kneeling at her side to place a hand on her shoulder. “Tess, I'll be right back okay? Anything happens, you scream at the top of your lungs. Or turn them into a toad.”

Whichever feels natural, Liam thought as he rose, heading for the end of Sol Avenue, desperately looking for someone who could help, but the streets were oddly quiet and person free. “Hello? Is anyone there? There's an injured woman!” he yelled, cupping his hands around his mouth.

The heavy breathing of the injured woman did nothing to soothe Liam's nerves, nodding rather quickly at the second woman's approach, flashing her a worried look as he looked back at Tessa as the other spoke rather frantically.

He said nothing, heading back towards Tessa to help her get the coat over the woman's shoulders, intently looking at his friend. “And this is why we don't go to the city. It's dangerous Tess!”

The woman between them suddenly shifted her hair back, revealing blood red eyes which both unnerved and confused Liam, just the same as Tessa. Hadn't she been badly injured and now she was... reassuring his friend?

He nodded slowly at her statement, tilting his head back towards the other woman at the abrupt voice, rather than at the command. As expected, he met Talmara's eyes, blinking slowly at the strangeness of something that he just couldn't place.

“But you're fine... this woman needs help,” he replied to the vampire labouredly, reaching out a hand to the other woman, his worry for her slipping away. Strange. “Tess?”

Home? Nat? Instinctively, as Liam heard the noise behind him, fading worry making him try and turn from Talmara to see what was going on. Unfortunately, he was suffering from the same lack of experience with both hypnotism and danger.

Maybe if he got out of this, he'd listen to the lectures. Maybe. For now, he felt his body stiffening and his expression showed fright as he went rigid, emotion fading from his features as he fell forward, eyes finally seeing Tessa in Layla's arms.

He would have cried out had he been able.

The last thing he remembered being terribly aware of was Tessa held in the arms of the 'injured' woman. It had filled him with panic and did so now as he came around, unnerved by the darkness that encapsulated him.

He had roused barely moments after the voices had died down and sat very still, conscious of his state and not liking it one bit. He didn't dare speak, reaching with a hand to see if he could ascertain what was around him.

It smelt earthy. Outdoors?

Dare he speak, see if Tessa was about? Instead, he reached out a bit further, hoping to find her unconscious form beside him.

Although Liam couldn't have known how small the area they were within was, the pain-filled sound that came from his left immediately alerted the fledgling sorcerer to two things. One, Tessa was with him and the second; she was in agony.

“Tess!” he murmured, crawling over carefully until he nudged into her, caring not for their circumstance, wrapping his arms around her shoulders, just holding her gently. “I'm here; whatever it is... I'm here alright? You're not alone.”

Liam's eyes didn't leave Tessa's face the entire time, worry etched into his pale features, barely able to see her in the almost limitless darkness. She didn't make any more sound though whether that was a blessing or curse he would never know.

Instead, he held her in his arms the entire time, cradling her exhausted body in his arms, instantly loathing whomever had caused her this agony. It seemed like much longer than ten minutes before his friend relaxed into his arms. “Tess?” he whispered softly and upon getting no reply, assuming she wasn't conscious.

He got himself as comfortable as she could, kneeling with her leant carefully in front of him, so she could rest.

Liam simply stared at the pile of clothes for a moment, stunned as the shed door slid shut again. From the glimpse he had caught of the offering for the short time the door was open, he had been able to tell that the clothes weren't in great condition.

But, it was certainly better than freezing his arse off in Gods only knew where. Thus, he gently lowered Tessa to the ground, using her little pile of cloth as a pillow for her head in lieu of the hard floor.

They smelt a bit, but the washed out trousers and shirt he put on without complaint, feeling infinitely more safe, even if he was anything but. Solemnly, he sat down cross-legged, waiting for Tessa to come around.
