"Well, obviously. You weren't prepared for the ordeal in the least. You probably still aren't. However, as long as this curse lasts, you're going to have to find a way to cope. Other than locking yourself away, however. You can't keep a distance forever. One day, there are going to be people that you simply..." she turned around then, her fingers sliding across the skin of his shoulder and his back. "...can't ignore."

With that, she dove underwater with a laugh.

The woman resurfaced behind a rock, sliding her belly across the flat surface. He wouldn't find her from here. She'd play a little game, just like the day before. Oh, toying with him was proving fun, it was. His confusion amused her, as did his reactions. The way he stiffened when she slid her palm across his skin...oh, how delightful a response! She stood still on the rock, watching the blue light travel under the water.

Kale might have felt several things swoosh by him, making powerful currents. Snippets of even more laughter, smooth and lyrical, like a song, would invade his ears. Swoosh, swoosh, again, those currents. Slimy skin against his, maybe a flash of silver.
This was not Luli's doing.

As Luli caught sight of Kale, she was about to call out, but something about his face...oh, yes, even in the dark of the night she could see it fairly well. That same spell Duke had used to light up details covered in shadow was one she'd taught him. "What's wrong?" She asked, her sharp eyes scanning the water. There was a splash to her left. Her head whipped around to look.
Nothing.

Again, a sweet, fluid song was brought to their ears. It tried to wrap around Kale, tried to draw him in. Something gripped his ankle tightly, trying to drag him down.

"Kale!" Cried the woman, watching as the man was pulled underneath. She stood up onto the rock, at first unsure of what to do. If she jumped in senselessly, surely, she would be taken by the same force and drowned. She knew what they were. Right after that little song they put out. Kale was right.
Sirens.

The girl reached into her dress, pulling out a very thin, layered object from the folds. She extended it, revealing it to be a fan. Oh, but it wasn't ordinary by any means. The top was sharp, like a razor blade. Now prepared, Luli dove in, holding the fan at an angle.

The hand holding Kale would be caught, and it wormed as ghost fire flared up. The light would reveal a silver arm, then a face twisted in pain. It was a lovely face, however adorned with sharp teeth and gills at the neck it was. They let go, pulling away.

The woman swam after Kale, the fan pressed to her side so she could avoid accidently cutting herself. She looked around the water, catching glimpses of silver and the occasional face lit up by the moon. She wasn't thinking about looking behind her for trouble, and thus allowing, without permission, for a hand to grab a fistful of hair and drag her down.

Meanwhile, something swam up, swiftly sliding onto the sand after the Phoenix. Just as before, it was a woman, though she didn't have a fishy tail like some species of siren. Her skin was a bluegreen color, gills were at her neck, and her hair was a vibrant red. She had normal legs, though at her calves were something like fins. "Now, don't be running away..." she sang, her voice wrapping around him like a vine a tree, bringing him towards her, hopefully.

"Wouldn't you like to know?" Hissed the siren, backing up on the sand as he came toward her, weapon raised. Her alluring visage turned into that of a fearful, spitting creature as she edged into the water. Out in the distance, bubbles broke the surface.
"I guess you've found her!" Hissed the siren before turning to disappear under the water.

What a wise move. Of only Kale had known the evil beasts well enough, he would have guessed that keeping her was a trap. On the sandy bottom of a more shallow area, Luli was being held down by two Sirens, the hand holding the fan being pasted to a rock by the siren who's wrist had been burned by Kale. They looked up, grinning with sharp teeth up at the man. Behind him, many, many other dark figures appeared, bearing down upon him and attempting to pin him down next to Luli. She wasn't out, but she was running out of air. Her hair floated around her body, wrapping around her like seaweed.

Luli lay limply on the surface, her lungs filled with water, unable to allow the precious air that she needed to live. She'd been down there a while, and yet, even in her unconscious state, her fingers were still clenched tightly around the metal fan.

Duke was having a harder time, however, and he, too, began to run out of air. His whole arm was rock solid, dragging him down, though there was a chance of him swimming back up if those dammed siren's hadn't been worsening the cause! They clasped him tightly and pulled, but then...suddenly they were all gone. Either dead or fleeing. Duke looked up at the woman who was swimming after him, holding his left arm with his right. He let go and held it out, asking for help for the first time in a very long while.

It didn't take too much effort to revive the drowned girl. She spluttered and spat out water, rolling to the side and allowing the water to drain from her lungs much more easily. She kept coughing and spluttering until all of it was gone, leaving her breathing raspily on the shore. Her hand curled into the sand, and it was a while until she looked up at Kale, her chest heaving and her eyes coated over in a daze. "What...what..." she tried to say through breaths.

Duke would be a heavy haul for most of the way up, however, the second Luli was revived, the greyness melted from him, and he became buoyant once again. They both made it to shore, him and this veiled woman, and as they did Duke took in a long, welcoming breath.

The siren squirmed and screamed, bringing short, painful noises to the ears as she did so. She didn't like the surface, and she didn't like being caught. That much was clear. Luli slowly moved herself onto her feet, fighting not to stumble as she rose. That was the second time she'd shown herself to look vulnerable and weak in front of Kale. That simply would not do. She moved to Lake, glancing at the siren for only a second. Duke stood his ground, swiping his fingers through his hair.

"I don't know why they attacked us," said Luli, voice slightly hoarse. Strangled and drowned. Terrible ways to almost go. "I suppose it was just random. They must have been hungry. Almost took a bite out of me until Kale dove in." She smiled. She shouldn't have been worried after all.

"You're...going to pay for this! We're not...done with you." Hacked the siren, her voice riddled with hate, fear, and venom. "Not all of us have died at your hands! Just...wait..."

Luli shook her head, tying her salty hair up on the side of her neck. She looked to Kale, who didn't seem to be doing much. He seemed to be fuming, however, and Luli couldn't blame him. Duke was currently doing the same, though he liked to brood a bit more. "What are you going to do with them?" Asked Luli, voicing what Kale and Duke didn't.

Duke wasn't paying attention, however. He was looking out in the distance, at the rocks. "There's someone over there." He said, raising a hand and pointing to Romul.

"Bounties? You mean..." Luli trailed off, standing straight. So they were being hunted? Not a surprise, but...why? What was one man possibly going to do with a few sirens? Kill them for his own pleasure? Chop them up and eat them? True, a siren's flesh, these in particular, weren't too far away from fish, but the whole idea seemed...cruel.
Even if she'd been caught for raw meat by their standards, anyway. "Do you know what this guy is going to do with them?" She asked.

Duke shrugged, running his fingers through his hair once again as he sighed. Must have been hallucinating. Surely. He'd nearly died, after all. And he didn't get second chances like Kale. He looked up at the man, and though his eyes were cold, they were inquisitive.
What did he think of him now, that he'd saved his life? Even to just save his own?

Luli let out a sigh of...relief? It didn't show too much, however. She was sure to keep composed at all times. She glanced at Kale from the corner of her eye as he got dressed, but said nothing. Well, at least he had dry clothes to put on. Herself and Duke...camping. Well, they didn't have much, but at least there was a spring nearby to wash off the salt.
God, hopefully there weren't pond sirens or anything of the like. "Major domo? I'm suspecting that's money. Never heard the term, but it makes sense." She said.

Duke looked to Kale with the shortest glare before...smiling? Yes. He was smiling. And it was staying there. "Chained gorilla just saved your ass." He said. "Once, anyway."

"He...he didn't mean a thing by it. I swear." Said Luli, smiling sweetly to the woman, as it it really didn't mean anything. Was that a threat she felt from him? It certainly...felt a but sinister. He probably didn't like being followed.
...but then again, what did she care? If she saw him again, it probably was because of her curiosity. She would be meeting him again and that was that. Duke didn't agree with it. He could already tell what she was thinking, but he knew he didn't have a choice.

The siren squealed and cried out as Lake pulled her up. She felt her skin getting horribly dry and itchy, something she didn't like at all. "For food, you fool! We eat humans when we get the chance!"
Of course, they attempted to drag down both men and women for many reasons. Sirens were only female. They needed to be wise about their numbers.

"Interesting." Said Luli, watching the strange woman walk off and haul the sirens over.
"She's strong," said Duke. "She dragged me all the way up with nearly half my body encased in stone. She's nothing to mess with."
"Nothing I plan to mess with."
"Good girl."
"Shut your mouth." Snapped Luli, wondering, at once, where Kale must have gone. Gah. She'd find him at a later date. Right now, herself and Duke needed to go off. "I have to thank you, miss, for saving us. We might not have lived without you," she said, going to pat Lake on the shoulder before going off into the woods. She did not wait for Duke.

The man stopped in front of Lake, looking at her, expression hard, for a long moment. He shifted his feet, then sighed. "Thanks." He said at last before turning and following Luli.

A girl not unlike the Empress was walking right into the glen, herself. In her hands was a pair of fans, both very decorative and shiny. They were not simple fans, some might have been able to tell, but otherwise, they would look like normal, decorative fans. Her black hair was put up in braids, hooked up to the back of a ponytail. She looked almost like a younger version of the empress.

The small girl could also hear footsteps, and she froze, lifting her head to try and listen better to them. They were behind a tree, not ten feet a way. Slipping off her shoes, she silently pivoted around the large plant, catching sight of the Japanese woman, dressed in the long, flowing Kimono. Her mouth droppes slightly, and her eyes grew wide.

Needless to say, Luli was actually amazed.

"Only seconds," she responded, still rather amused at the woman's appearance. She clasped her hands behind her back, breathing slowly. "I am Luli. Are you some sort of royalty?" she asked, somewhat breathless. What a woman. She was...beautiful. She looked like the Empress back home.
Oh, did she certainly look like her!

"Many would say so. But I do not believe you are so average," she said, eyes never leaving the Empress' face. So she was royalty! A woman was rarely dressed so lavishly and yet at the same time was poor or middle class!

"I am amazed simply by your beauty, ma'am, and maybe because you look so familiar. You look like someone I knew back home. It is a bit...amusing."

The darkness of the forest today seemed even more pressing than usual. It cloaked the forest ground and hugged trees, also concealed figures from sight. One such figure was in a tree, sticking closely to the base of the branch so that the moonlight may not find her. She seemed to be looking for something. Or rather, someone.
