Malkin Grey

A human mage who seems awfully normal and curious for someone who dabbles with the darkest arts. Believes strongly in using the tools of evil against itself, and that nothing that can benefit the greater good should be shunned.

Description:
An average-seeming human, Malkin wears an assortment of blacks, greys and browns, preferring to wear more practical working clothes and tunics which, whilst of a highly professional cut, do not impede his ease of movement or shout "wizard". Malkin abhors arcane ostentation, and believes in dressing appropriately for someone who has to travel a great deal and also work alot, both physically and mentally. He carries a simple, slender yew staff, unadorned with any magical bricabrac, and serves mostly as a walking aid, and, in an emergency, as a means of defence.

Malkin has a rugged, if somewhat plain face, occasionally rugged or lightly bearded with his dark-brown hair. He is tanned by years of working outdoors, in marked contrast to most spellcasters. Malkin believes that the best way of learning Magic is not ivory tower experimentation, but to go out and -do- it, and see it at work in the wild.

Dislikes: – Evil for its own sake, Selfishness, Ignorance, Paladins
Hobbies: – Researching Dark and Weird fields of Magic, and then coming up with ways to use it safely for the greater good.
Personality: –

Malkin is considered eccentric by other wizards and spellcasters, if only for his very hard-headed, rational approach. He sees Magic as being the same as any other tradecraft or act of mechanical labour. What makes this attitude particularly noteworthy is his choice of tools- he believes in using Necromancy, Thanaturgy and other, darker arts to accomplish practical and beneficial goals, for himself and for the community at large. If Grey found a town's bridge was out, he would offer to employ his arts to task the village's deceased to work day and night to rebuild that bridge. If there was a dispute over a Will, he would speak with the departed's spirit and determine how they wanted their material goods divided.

Not suprisingly, Grey's arts have won him mixed acclaim, some damning him as a niave meddler at best, and a sinister and perverse spellcaster at worst. Shrugging off such naysayers, he lets his actions stand for themselves, and continues to wander, in part to keep a safe distance from those who refuse to understand his work, but mostly to ensure he never becomes complacent, in his search not only to help people, but find new and interesting and weird forms of magic, understand them, and then use them to create practical and beautiful solutions to problems.

In many ways, the Thanaturge is also something of a Mage-Engineer hybrid.

Entering the tavern notorious for its dark, shady and often dangerous clientele, was a most unusual customer. An average-height human, whistling a jaunty tune, wearing a slim grey tunic and long leather trousers. He carried a long yew-wood staff, which seemed the only clue as to his profession. Either he was a very eccentric vampire, or, more likely, some kind of Mage. He didn't look much like the usual sort of Mages who visited Tauvyr, though. Scanning the Tavern, he looked around the booths, assessing the clientele, before carefully gliding his way through the crowd to the bar.

"I'll have one Gruul, please." He asked politely, to the barkeep's uncaring face, depositing some coins on the counter. "Also, do you perchance know if there's uh, any Gargoyles in?" He asked with a whisper. "I can provide some more coinage if necessary."

The Mage smiled, his curiosity piqued. He paid the barkeep the extra silver, took his Gruul, and went to sit down at the booth, seemingly unafraid of the coterie of paranormal beasts around him. "Good evening there...miss, is it?" He said, carefully. The outward form seemed feminine, but you never knew with these sorts of creatures. "Allow me to introduce myself. I am Malkin Grey. Some call me the "Thanaturge"." He handed a business card written in magical glowing ink to the Gargoyle. When she looked at it, the text seemed to writhe on the paper. "Malkin Grey! Mage! Craftsman! Engineer! You have a problem he'll fix it!" In tiny letters below was a disclaimer, which warned, in increasingly tiny text, of 554 potential ailments and disasters that might result from hiring Grey's service which he refused to accept liability for.

"I hope I'm not disturbing you? I've come a long way to find someone such as yourself."

Grey seemed a little flustered. Whatever he'd been expecting, this clearly hadn't been quite it. "Ah...well..."He stammered a bit, before recovering. "Well, miss, you have the advantage over me. I don't even know your name, regrettably." He blushed, obviously wondering just quite what this Gargoyle meant by "play around".
"What do you uh, have in mind?" He adjusted himself on the seat, and took a long sip from his Gruul wine, trying to remind himself that he was here for business, and nothing else.

Grey flushed. "You are certainly the most...interesting Gargoyle or theriantrope i've met in my lifetime." He coughed, focusing on his wine for a moment. "A pleasure to meet you miss Asha." He offered his hand for her to shake, wondering if gargoyles observed such customs.
"And, regrettably, the declining numbers of your race are partly why I have spent so long seeking you- or someone like yourself out." He said, remembering the sales pitch he'd memorised, though he find himself warming to this strange creature, and wondering if such a pitch would be entirely appropriate now that he'd actually met her.

Grey nodded. "Of course. I realise you must be very busy doing ah, whatever it is you do. Anyway, I have come..." He paused for dramatic effect- "With a proposition. I do not wish to touch on old griefs or buried pains, but I believe that, rare as your kind may be, they have exceptional talents and attributes that could yet benefit the greater good. As someone who believes that anything can do good, whatever provenance that thing might have in the popular imagination, I believe that the Gargoyles have much to offer. For too many they have a negative image, one that I would see changed. I am known in some quarters for my unorthodox methods, but, with your permission, I would like to work with you, perhaps learn what I can of your species and its lore, and begin a business venture, if you are open to it." He smiled.
"Forgive me if this seems vague, but part of the reason I have spent so long searching for you is that there just isn't much known about you or your people, and I would dearly pay much to be given a chance simply to learn, even if no productive venture between the two of us were to result."

Grey brightened. "Of course. I would be happy to accompany you. Are you going hunting? I would be honoured to witness a Gargoyle hunting first-hand. Provided, haha, of course, that you don't end to ah, hunt me." He smiled sheepishly. "But yes, If you would permit, I would be happy to accompany you. Perhaps, yes, indeed, we could discuss things further afterwards?" He swallowed, finding himself becoming more polite rather than less, and cursing his formality. He didn't want to offend this powerful creature, which as it had just reminded him, was a beast, no matter how...friendly it might seem to him. "Perhaps I might even be able to help out?" He indicated his pouch of spell components and staff. "Though I regret my arts might not be suitable to a hunt."

Grey raised an eyebrow in suprise at the Gargoyle's thirst and obvious tolerance for rich wines. Shrugging, he picked up his staff and hastily followed after. Whatever else happened tonight, he thought, at least it would be interesting.

Ulrich Paternosta stepped into the warm interior of the tavern. He gave it a quick scan and grunted. She wasn't anywhere in sight; good. There was something off with Ms. Tauvyr as of late. More off than usual.

Stone and Boyle followed in shortly after. The pair of vampires sort of taking in the sights of a rather rich looking drinking hole. "Nice. Nice. Hey Stones! They got the nice chairs! Take a peep at them!" Boyles made his way over to a table. A chair with rich velvet cushions that he ran along his hand. "Look at that. Feel that. Good right?"

Stones followed in not even giving the chair a look.

"Ish fine." He said bluntly. He moved to the sight. Taking in a strong nostril fill of something. Hm.

"That one." he pointed to a bottle behind the counter. A cup? "No. That one." The whole bottle? Okay... He uncorked it and began to drink it very greedily.

Deliveries to the Tauvyr Tavern were more regular with the new ownership of Fantasma Vineyards. The bottles were stocked and varied though many of the labels familiar some a more threatening make. Labels with letters that squirm and images with unsettling angles. One such bottle festooned with the dual masks Sock and Buskin sported others etched into the glass. Though these of anguish and horror if one should peer closer. Perhaps a warning for its label 'Thousand-Faced Wine' that said little else of its make than bottled in Fantasma Vineyards. A cigarette alit behind the bar though the embers fell first out of memory than the light of one's eyes. A bit of red ash falling in life before the eyeless grin of Ebrabbos underneath her wide brim hat and thick cloak. Long hair pours from under her hat to float past her shoulders as locks snake around her shoulders as to threaten by rising there. Though the eyes obscured beneath her hat their ill-defined shape inviting one to stare too close as they stared back. The cigarette in her mouth flared but never burnt down as she unpacked a box of wine from behind the counter.

"Careful now, " the tone lost about some unclear sarcasm, "There are so very many faces of regret that deep in a bottle of wine."

Stone and Boyle were now separated. Boyle was now at the side of Ulrich beginning to get comfortable in this soft velvet chair. A wide grin as his shark like mouth slowly blended back into a row of normal teeth. "Blimey! This is delux ain't it!?" He asked the other vampire. Before he began to speak again. "Look. The two of us are on a hunt. But not to cause trouble. Stones can be a bit violent. He comes from a violent times you know?" He told the other. "We are looking for a criminal. Or someone close to that."

Stones was at the bar. He drank half of the bottle and was surprised that the alcohol actually had some affect on him. THe huge man now turned to the stranger. He looked to her fancy hat. He nodded. "Good fashion." He told her at first. "We both know this is not wine."

Stone and Boyle regathered back at the table. Stones standing there while Boyle got back up. Stones stood there as he handed the etching back to Boyle. The other vampire had been better at talking. Most times. Unless they wanted to frighten people. Stones was much better at that he felt.

Boyle handed the other a etching. An etching of a man done in charcoal. The likeness was very well done. Man in his forties, very long slant nose. Dark hair. Short cut. Very fierce looking eyes. "That is who we are looking for. And trust me he is dangerous anywhere we gather." He told the other Vampire.

"This shit gets powers. What does he do? Immediately what most shits start to do. Start to think he's a bloody god."

The visage was of a vampire in circles called Feastus. A Vampire that had started a sanguine cult installing him as their living deity. "But most of these shitheads don't try to bother the established covens... So we got the call."

Ebbrabos curled her mouth as she took her cigarette in her hand for a deeper dark to focus on Stones, "Oh, some of it was wine when I started. I hate to waste product acquired after some fortunate... firings. Now, much of it is whine."

Cigarette to her lips never seemed to draw down but alit with an ember where keen ears found outcries for succor, "Thus Feastus destroying things to which he is not entitled? How interesting a pyre is ordered by the powers that be. Good thing hunters aren't the only ones who know how to burn."

An empty gaze deep enough to drown hope in looked very pointedly at Boyle as she took the cigarette out. A grey cloud breathed out with a sickly-sweet scent of meat and charcoal unmistakable to those that know it. Hat down toward the empty tankard.

Ulrich Paternosta nodded and grunted. He didn't recognize the face, but had it memorized now. Those who thought they were untouchable were the most dangerous of all. The woman with the cigarette spoke up on the matter. Ulrich's ears perked.

"You know bou' this?" Ulrich spoke up across the bar to the Ebbrabos. He recognized her from around. She was from over at the vineyards. Ulrich didn't like the look of her, but what was he to say? His brow lowered. Things were getting out of hand around Aslund. Terrorists in Wing City, cultist leaders gone off the deep end. He shook his head.

"A threat this large? Huh. Sounds like my business if yer lookin' round these parts," Ulrich then said to Boyle and gave a hard nod.
