Mark, the Unremarkable

Do I know you from somewhere..?

0 · 638 views · located in Wing City Gardens (East)

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Jerico Do'Lantul

Description

Standing at about 5'10", he is of average height. Everything about him seems remarkably unremarkable, to the point where one might question whether or not he was a person, at all..
As of the Lt. "Ironhand" Straken character arc, he has changed his appearence. He now wears his hair shorter, and wears more rugged, military-style clothing.

Personality

Real name Mark Sellers, but rarely, if ever, uses this name. Instead, he goes by a variety of fake names, sometimes using as many as three in a single outing. In spite of all appearences, Mark carries with him a dark secret that only a few in the entire multiverse know; Mark is an assassin. One of the best, in reality, in the fact that he has never been caught in all of his many years of activity. This may be due, in part, to the fact that Mark posseses a special ability unlike any other; the ability to, for lack of a better term, be unremarkable. For reasons unknown, Mark's face is just the perfect ballence between handsome, enough so that people will trust him, and generic, to the point that one will never be able to place his name with his face. This goes beyond an ordinary play on the fickle minds of sentient beings, however. It doesn't matter if you're the most intelligent, memory-bound individual in the entire multiverse. You will never remember Mark's face. Even within moments of losing sight of Mark, many have reported being unable to pick him out of the crowd.Even in pictures, Mark will be unrecogniseable. In a side-by-side comparrison, it MAY be possible to identify him, but this would be a stretch. It is highly suspected that Mark has some innate ability to make his face change, over time, enough to where one would never know it was him. This is a fallacy. In truth, it is the person's mind, itself, which plays tricks. The contours of his face trigger no residual memories to be stored in one's brain, meaning that no memories will be triggered by simply seeing his face. The only way that one is able to remember Mark is if he reminds them of the name he gave them.

An example is the only way to aptly explain.

Suppose Mark comes across and attractive woman. They strike up a conversation, in which Mark introduces himself as "Steven". One he and the woman part ways, all memories of Mark's face will leave her mind, and she will, ultimately, forget him. Now, let's say they meet, again, the next day. The woman's brain will struggle to place Mark's face with past events, but, because Mark's face doesn't trigger residual memories, she will fail to remember him or anything they shared the previous day. However, if Mark reminds her of the name that he gave the previous day, "Steven", her mind will be able to compensate from having no memory of his face and will, instead, work off of the name. Only through this method are people able to remember Mark.

There is, however, one exception.

If Mark were to, for whatever reason, give one his true name, this ability becomes moot. Knowing Mark's true name makes one able to remember Mark's face, because he is being genuine, for a change. Once he had given his true name, he will be fully open and honest with that person, to whatever end. Even after Mark leaves, his face will remain in that person's memories. There is no going back from this, once it has been set into motion. As of yet, only four people have ever known Mark's true name. His parents, sister, and his employer. His parents are dead, and his sister's whereabouts remain unknown. His employer, name unknown, works descretely as he commands thousands of assassins all across the multiverse.

Equipment

Image
Carries a Sig Sauer 226 at all times, but will not use it unless absolutely neccesary. Ussually tucked into the back of his pants, though he will, occasionally, wear a holster on his leg. This will, usually, only be when on the job.

NOTE: As a result of several run-in's with men and women of the vampiric persuasion, he has seen fit to carry custom-made silver bullets on his person, at all times. The base and tips of these rounds are standard lead composition, but the outermost layer is silver, which is enough to cause great harm to most any vampire.

Image
A hidden blade is worn beneath the sleeve of his left arm.

NOTE: as a result of several run-in's with men and women of the vampiric persuasion, he has added silver engravings to the flat sides of the blade. Though the edges are still hardened steel, once the blade enters a vampires body, so too, will the silver, which will serve to cause great damage to most any vampire.

Image
Small, balenced throwing knives, usually worn strapped around his chest. Accessible by unbuttoning one of the middle buttons of his shirt. Not visible from without.

Image
Flies a ship know as The Resonance. It is a long-range fighter modified to withstand Slipspace travel. It's cargo bay was filled with the core needed to power the Slipspace Drivers, making it rather heavy and cumbersome. It is primarily used as a means of travel, and not as an actuall fighter, as it was originally intended. Seats two people, the pilot and the gunner/bomber, though there is never a payload onboard, any longer.

History

Not much is known of Mark Sellers. Everything one might glean from a conversation with him has been forgotten mere moments later. it is common knowledge, however, that he works for a man who command several thousand assassins all across the Multiverse. It is said that he has sent one of his best to Wing City to complete an unknown task. Mark Sellers is that man, and will stop at nothing untill his task is complete.

So begins...

Mark, the Unremarkable groans as he rises from his cover. For now, he would remain as Captain Grisham. Being an officer would prove to be quite usefull, especially for what he had in mind. As he makes his way towards Medical, he pauses and opens a global channel. "Attention all personnel. This is Captain Nethaniel Grisham. I'm instructing all able-bodied men and women to report to the Training Grounds for debriefing. This includes all Honor Guard personnel. Those within the Medical Ward are instructed to remain where you are and watch over the injured, there. You will be debriefed after you are relieved. That is all. Grisham out." He switches back to the channel with Merceigh. "Get yourself patched up and meet me in the Training Grounds, ASAP. Out."

Mark, the Unremarkable was elsewhere, speaking with a few of the troops. He had been told, by Merceigh, not to kill Straken while he was in recovery. He planned to honor her wishes, untill she returned. For now, he would mull over what he would do. Meanwhile, a pair of medics open the first lock of Straken's "cell". In all honesty, it was a recovery chamber rigged to double as a prison for Straken. The two doors had been reinforced with a tough steel, to prevent escape or infiltration. The medics were the only ones allow inside, and each one had been cleared by Merceigh, to prevent assassins from getting to Straken. As they step into the first section, the door closes, behind them, and the sanitization phase begins, spraying them down with chemicals to prefent contaminents from entering with them. Straken could probably hear this going on, on the other side.

Mark, the Unremarkable nods as a few of the soldiers salute. They fall out to their assigned positions as Mark makes his way towards Recovery. From outside, he would be able to look in at Straken through double-pane plexi-glass, reinforced with steel threads, which webbed through the glass from top to bottom. He blinks as he sees Gritz already there, but doesn't reach for his weapon, yet. "Sergeant Gritz.. may I ask what you're doing here, in Observation? By all rights, you ought to be locked up in there, with General Straken.. No.. no, I suppose we shouldn't be calling him that, anymore. Marbo Straken." His mic had been turned on, alerting Merceigh's unit to the situation. A few double-time it to Observation, where they stack up outside of the door. The would only enter if a fray broke out.

Mark, the Unremarkable still wore the bars of a Captain, and his nametag wasn't hidden, this time. It read "Grisham" identifying him as Captain Nethaniel Grisham. As such, he did not have to introduce himself for Grits to recognise him.

The medics open the second lock as the sanitization phase ends, and step into the room with Straken. The door closes automatically behind them. The first medic speaks, his voice coming in through a pair of small speakers. "General Straken, sir. We're here to examine you and administer medication, where needed. We need you to cooperate with us, so that we can best help your recovery process. Do you understand?"

Mark, the Unremarkable turns to watch as the medics enter the room with Straken. "Probably so.. I'm under orders to keep him alive and healthy, so that's exactly what I intend to do." He turns back to Gritz. "Straken is a traitor. Plain and simple. There is no justifying what he did to Captain Gabriel. Who knows how many others he's savagely beaten, or even killed? You had your orders, but you were obligated to report his actions to a higher authority. You, Sergeant Gritz, are just as much to blame for all of this.."

Mark, the Unremarkable turns his head as Straken assaults one of the medics, who falls backwards, unconscious. Blood can be seen through his clear face mask. As the second medic moves to try and sedate Straken, via a needle in the arm(not his biomechanical one), Mark turns back to Gritz. "You call this acceptable behavior..? The man is mental. Clearly out of control.. and you knew this to be true. Still, you held your tongue, and for what?! He needs help, Sergeant. At the very least, he needs to be removed from command.." He would take a step towards him. "And you need to turn yourself in.. after processing, it will be found that you had nothing to do with all of this.. you'll be released, but not if you continue to fight on Straken's behalf."

Mark, the Unremarkable reaches up, a small notepad in hand. "This is a full report on the goings-on, here. It places you as the man who stepped forward, in regards to Straken. It also names the other members of Straken's regiment... may they rest in peace. Commendations may be in order, and perhaps even a promotion.. all of this can be a reality, Sergeant Gritz."

Mark, the Unremarkable turns and follows Gritz as he exits the room. "Sergeant Gritz, we're not through, here!" As Gritz rounds the corner and begins to work over the door, Merceigh's soldiers look towards Mark, who gestures towards him. "Subdue him, and take him down the hall to a detention cell." There were eight soldiers, several of which had been in Mark's squad in the battle to retake the Parade Grounds. As a unit, they all move forward, their rifles levels at Gritz. "Sir! Step away from the door with your hands up!" They meant business. If Gritz did not comply, they would fire on him. Space Marine or not, the combined fire from eight assault rifles would tear him appart before he could form his last thought.

Mark, the Unremarkable takes a step back as one of the soldiers stands in the path of Gritz' bolt gun. He speaks over the soldier's head. "This is your last chance, Sergeant.. there are other regiments, you know. Other possibilities. Opportunities you haven't considered. This doesn't have to be the end of your career. Lay down your weapons and we can discuss this properly. These men are fearless.. much like the 1st Catchen were. If you wish to honor your comrade's memories, you'll do as I say. Otherwise, they'll be going down as traitors, right along with you and Straken.. traitors who got just what they deserved. You don't want that to happen, Sergeant, and it doesn't have to happen that way. Do the right thing."

Mark, the Unremarkable opens his mouth to reply, but one of the greener members of the squad opens up as Gritz falls to the ground, thinking he is performing some kind of maneuver. As one, the other seven members open fire on Gritz, unleashing a hail of bullets towards him, and filling the hallway with gunfire. The sounds of thunder echo in all directions as Mark waves his arms, shouting for the soldiers to cease fire. His orders would fall upon deaf ears. The deed had been done.

Mark, the Unremarkable steps forward, shoving several of the squad memebers aside. Things seemed to be moving in slow motion. The gunfire slowed before stopping, Mark's voice finally audiable, though it was muffled. His ears would ring, as would all of the other men's as he pushed forward to see Gritz. The man had never stood a chance. His bolt gun lay on the ground next to him. His body had been hit with nearly thirty rounds. The majority had struck his chest, leaving his vest and clothing torn asunder, smoke wafting up from seared flesh. Some had grazed his limbs, one or two entering his left leg, where his main artery had been severed. Blood still flowed from the wound, though the man's heart had long since stopped. The area was painted crimson with the remainder of the man's life. Mark swears quietly, which goes unheard amonst the ringing in their ears. He turns away, his face in his hand as he walks a ways off. The members of the squad look amongst themselves, while other look to the recruit, who shook, slightly. This should have never happened. None of it. Mark sighs as he leans his back against the wall.

Mark, the Unremarkable turns away as the flashbang rolls towards them, blocking the ensueing flash of light. He turns back, his own rifle aimed towards the nearest Space Marine. "Hold your fire!" He addresses the other Space Marines. "I am Captain Nethaniel Grisham! Identify yourselves, or we will fire on you!" All the while, Mark was backing up. He finds a niche in the hallway where a door was, providing him with decent cover. The other members of the squad had had their backs turned, which protected them from the flash. They turned, now, to face the oncoming Marines, their rifles aimed towards them. They, too, would seek cover along the hallway. Mark switches on his mic and begins to speak softer, so that the "enemy" soldiers would not hear. "Attention, attention. All base security and personnel. This is Captain Grisham. We are under attack. All available troops, move to Recovery to intercept. Grisham out." Mark was as good as these men and woman's CO, after the battle. They would listen and obey his orders unquestioningly, as if Merceigh had given them. Even as Mark stands ready to recieve the newcomers, scores of soldiers would be heading their way. In a matter of seconds, they would begin to appear behind the Space Marines, as well as behind Mark's squad, ready to deal with this new threat.

Mark, the Unremarkable answers. "He had a weapon trained on my men. They were acting in self-defence. He was given several warnings to surrender, to which he did not comply. My men were well within their rights to do what had to be done. Now, I say again, identify yourselves! If you value your lives, you will comply with my orders." He chooses not to answer the man's question regarding Straken untill he answers his question.

Mark, the Unremarkable instictively drops behind cover as the ball flies towards him, hitting the wall and bouncing away. As one, Mark's squad opens fire, sending three-round-bursts towards the Space Marines, who stood out in the open. From behind, a dozen soldiers find cover and also begin to fire on the strange newcomers.
