Mark, the Unremarkable

Do I know you from somewhere..?

0 · 1,214 views · located in Wing City Gardens (East)

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Jerico Do'Lantul

Description

Standing at about 5'10", he is of average height. Everything about him seems remarkably unremarkable, to the point where one might question whether or not he was a person, at all..
As of the Lt. "Ironhand" Straken character arc, he has changed his appearence. He now wears his hair shorter, and wears more rugged, military-style clothing.

Personality

Real name Mark Sellers, but rarely, if ever, uses this name. Instead, he goes by a variety of fake names, sometimes using as many as three in a single outing. In spite of all appearences, Mark carries with him a dark secret that only a few in the entire multiverse know; Mark is an assassin. One of the best, in reality, in the fact that he has never been caught in all of his many years of activity. This may be due, in part, to the fact that Mark posseses a special ability unlike any other; the ability to, for lack of a better term, be unremarkable. For reasons unknown, Mark's face is just the perfect ballence between handsome, enough so that people will trust him, and generic, to the point that one will never be able to place his name with his face. This goes beyond an ordinary play on the fickle minds of sentient beings, however. It doesn't matter if you're the most intelligent, memory-bound individual in the entire multiverse. You will never remember Mark's face. Even within moments of losing sight of Mark, many have reported being unable to pick him out of the crowd.Even in pictures, Mark will be unrecogniseable. In a side-by-side comparrison, it MAY be possible to identify him, but this would be a stretch. It is highly suspected that Mark has some innate ability to make his face change, over time, enough to where one would never know it was him. This is a fallacy. In truth, it is the person's mind, itself, which plays tricks. The contours of his face trigger no residual memories to be stored in one's brain, meaning that no memories will be triggered by simply seeing his face. The only way that one is able to remember Mark is if he reminds them of the name he gave them.

An example is the only way to aptly explain.

Suppose Mark comes across and attractive woman. They strike up a conversation, in which Mark introduces himself as "Steven". One he and the woman part ways, all memories of Mark's face will leave her mind, and she will, ultimately, forget him. Now, let's say they meet, again, the next day. The woman's brain will struggle to place Mark's face with past events, but, because Mark's face doesn't trigger residual memories, she will fail to remember him or anything they shared the previous day. However, if Mark reminds her of the name that he gave the previous day, "Steven", her mind will be able to compensate from having no memory of his face and will, instead, work off of the name. Only through this method are people able to remember Mark.

There is, however, one exception.

If Mark were to, for whatever reason, give one his true name, this ability becomes moot. Knowing Mark's true name makes one able to remember Mark's face, because he is being genuine, for a change. Once he had given his true name, he will be fully open and honest with that person, to whatever end. Even after Mark leaves, his face will remain in that person's memories. There is no going back from this, once it has been set into motion. As of yet, only four people have ever known Mark's true name. His parents, sister, and his employer. His parents are dead, and his sister's whereabouts remain unknown. His employer, name unknown, works descretely as he commands thousands of assassins all across the multiverse.

Equipment

Image
Carries a Sig Sauer 226 at all times, but will not use it unless absolutely neccesary. Ussually tucked into the back of his pants, though he will, occasionally, wear a holster on his leg. This will, usually, only be when on the job.

NOTE: As a result of several run-in's with men and women of the vampiric persuasion, he has seen fit to carry custom-made silver bullets on his person, at all times. The base and tips of these rounds are standard lead composition, but the outermost layer is silver, which is enough to cause great harm to most any vampire.

Image
A hidden blade is worn beneath the sleeve of his left arm.

NOTE: as a result of several run-in's with men and women of the vampiric persuasion, he has added silver engravings to the flat sides of the blade. Though the edges are still hardened steel, once the blade enters a vampires body, so too, will the silver, which will serve to cause great damage to most any vampire.

Image
Small, balenced throwing knives, usually worn strapped around his chest. Accessible by unbuttoning one of the middle buttons of his shirt. Not visible from without.

Image
Flies a ship know as The Resonance. It is a long-range fighter modified to withstand Slipspace travel. It's cargo bay was filled with the core needed to power the Slipspace Drivers, making it rather heavy and cumbersome. It is primarily used as a means of travel, and not as an actuall fighter, as it was originally intended. Seats two people, the pilot and the gunner/bomber, though there is never a payload onboard, any longer.

History

Not much is known of Mark Sellers. Everything one might glean from a conversation with him has been forgotten mere moments later. it is common knowledge, however, that he works for a man who command several thousand assassins all across the Multiverse. It is said that he has sent one of his best to Wing City to complete an unknown task. Mark Sellers is that man, and will stop at nothing untill his task is complete.

So begins...

Mark, the Unremarkable suddenly lifts his left hand up. Everything would move in slow motion. His glass of Whisky is upset, sending a wild arc of liquid across the bar, followed by tiny fragments of crystal as the glass is shattered in mid-air. The springs in his Hidden Blade are set into motion as the four inch blade is sent flying from it's slot.. into nothingness. Mark slams his arm into the counter, componding the delicate mechanism of the Hidden Blade. Tiny spings leap from under his sleeve, and the small blade slides from him, spinning to a halt on the counter, between Mark and Merceigh. His breath is calm and even, as though nothing had just happened. His voice is barely above a whisper. "I can't kill you.."

Mark, the Unremarkable remains quiet, for a moment. "It's who I am, Merceigh.. I'm not supposed.. to become attached." He coughs quietly, looking around for a moment. "I was ordered.. to kill you before I left this place. You are the only loose end." He looks back at her. "But I can't.."

Mark, the Unremarkable shakes his head. "I remain here.. amongst other things.. It won't be good, for me. But if I try and leave, they'll find me. Of that, there's no doubt. This assignment will go down as incomplete, untill you're dead." He places his face in one of his hands. "There's time.." He quickly amends. "N-not to kill you, I mean.. I mean, arrhh.." He falls silent. For once, he was the one without the right thing to say. He had no plan of action. As soon as Straken was turned over to High Command, his worries would really begin.

Mark, the Unremarkable frowns, turning his head to face her. "You're not serious.. Have you not been listening? You're a hero.. you're going to have your own company, before this is over. Even if you choose to retire, your stipend will be in the six-digit range. This is your chance to change everything.." You can make the world a better place. He wouldn't say it. It would seem hypocritical. More than this, he wanted to see Merceigh make a difference. There was no way he would allow her to take her own life. Not if he could help it.

Mark, the Unremarkable smiles and chuckles half-heartedly. "Against what I'll be faced with.. nowhere will be safe." Still, his mind raced with the possibilities. Were it not for his employer, he could be safe. His greatest threat came from within; his employer, head of the order of assassins, was one of only two(now three) people who knew his real name. If it weren't for this, Mark could simply walk into the next room and dissappear, forever. As it was, he was subject to the man's whims. He could send legions after legions of assassins against him, posing as janitors, school teachers, subway workers, coffee baristas, bartenders, even soldiers.. and Mark would never know. No one would. Such was the way of the assassin. Dange could be around every corner, behind ever counter, and under every rock. Even now, there was no doubt in his mind that he was not the only assassin currently in Wing City. He would share none of these fears with Merceigh. Perhaps, it was better she didn't know..

Mark, the Unremarkable Nods. Yes, time. They had time. "High Command will be here, soon.. the orders have already been sent. When they arrive, Straken will be taken into custody to stand trial. After that.." He looks at Merceigh. "I'll need paperwork. I'll need documentation on just how long I've been with the regiment. How I became an officer, and how I got here, in Wing City."

Mark, the Unremarkable nods quietly. "We need to debrief them. Some of them have been on duty since before those troops attacked. They could use a day of rest." He rises from his seat and turns towards the front entrance. He opens the door and waits for Merceigh to follow.

Mark, the Unremarkable was behind Merceigh. He looks around in a moment of paranoia. He had changed into his uniform en route. His name tag in place, he had assumed Captain Grisham's identity flawlessly as he enters teh base behind Merceigh. He opens a global channel, which would encompass everyone on base. "Attention. Attention, all base security and personnel. This is Captain Grisham. All available units are to report to the Parade Grounds for debriefing. Those on loan to guard Precious Cargo will recieve special debriefing orders, at a later time. Grisham, out." And, with that, he would close the global channel as various others began squaking, several segeants and Lt's ordering their squads to form up at the Parade Grounds. He looks over and nods to Merceigh. Straken would remain under lock and key. Untill High Command arrived, he was Precious Cargo, and would remain under close watch, in Recovery.

Mark, the Unremarkable raises his right arm, his hand closed in a fist. Within a few moments, each squad's CO would have the men quieted down and in a rough formation. It wouldn't matter much; the Parade Grounds weren't as large as they should have been, and the men would be hard pressed to fit comfortably. As they all settled down, he would surrender the floor to Merceigh with a nod. She should be the one to speak. It was her regiment, after all. The front gates would be sealed shut, and the guards on duty would stop the approaching soldiers. "Identify yourselves." The one at teh COM would bark. His finger hovered over the switch that would activate the Auto-turrents in front, which would tear the men appart, should they be hostile.

The man at the front gate turn to look at Merceigh. Mark was back at the Parade Grounds, and would have no knowledge of what was happeneing at the gate. He would be unable to warn Merceigh that the man, there wasn't the one currently on his way from deeper in another quadrent. That man would not arrive untill later.

Mark, the Unremarkable frowns slightly as a few of the man break ranks and head over to the he had a feeling that he should be there, too.. but a Captain would remain with his men in times of uncertainty. A Captain would show composure, and that's exactly what he would do. Merceigh could handle herself, he assured himself. She had done well enough, before he came here.

Mark, the Unremarkable 's men, who guard Straken, are caught off-guard by the janitor who draws down. Only for an instant, though. They had been on duty since early the other day, and were on edge. One is dropped by teh gunman's bullets, but the other two manage to round on him, weapons at the ready, and return fire. One takes a glancing shot to the shoulder, but manages to keep his rifle on-target. Meanwhile, Mark frowned again and sounds the "regroup". "Move, move! Take up positions along the wall! We're under attack!" He opens up a Command Channel. "Precious Cargo is at risk. All units in teh area, converge on-site and provide reinforcements."

The regiment, much of which was in the Parade Grounds, near the front gate, surround this so-called "Captain", their rifles at teh ready, and trained on him. Mark double-times it to Merceigh's side. "Captain Gabriel! What's going on? Why is there gunfire in the buildings.. and who are these men?"

Meanwhile, the one who had taken a shot to the shoulder had taken cover, and continued to fire on the lone gunman. Several of the regiment had arrived on scene, and were adding their bullets to the fray, hailing gunfire on the man's position. Soon, the sheer mass of lead would claim his life, cover or not.

Mark, the Unremarkable turns his head skyward as light begins to set down upon the earth. In his ears, a cacophony of beatiful, harmonious sounds would invade his thoughts. Angelic voices.. ringing bells.. soft music. He blinks at the light slowly approaching them. "What.. what.." He could find no words. None could do the vision justice. All thoughts of viollence would leave him. All intentions of doing harm would vanish. He simply wanted... to be.
