Across the solar system of Sol, far from the gravitational pull of Terra but not yet so far as deep space, a meteor approached.
In the distance it would appear as a speck, hardly significant to any planets in this particular solar system. The target of this hunk of space rock was not a rock near here. However, through Sol did the meteor pass.
It hurtled through the black of space, collecting bits of debris that had lost their momentum, absorbing chunks of the solar system that were too weak to resist it. So it continued, for quite some time, no humans or beings crossing it's path. Perhaps the collected lichen or primitive space bio-specimen every now and then. A mold.
The meteor didn't mind mold. Actually, it had decided during this specific trek, it quite liked mold. Mold was unobtrusive, and was kind of insulating. Not that Meteor had to care about insulating. Space rock tended not to be sensitive to temperate changes.
No, this meteor liked mold. It pondered the exact process it would need to take, as a sentient space rock hurtling through the depths of space, to contact the mold which was living, surviving, daring to thrive on it's very surface. This was exactly what it was perplexing about as far, far away, on the other side of Sol, space ships communicated with each other. Humans and aliens came in and out of warp. People aimed guns, people schemed, people demanded identification. Beings even transported vegetables called Forn.
Meteor continued it's exploit through space, none the wiser to the going-on's of Terra from this distance.
