Monitor-102 "Contingent Omega"

Monitor 102 "Contingent Omega" is a curious observer of existence, or at least seemingly so.

Description

Monitor - 102 "Contingent Omega" aka Contingent Omega, aka Odd

Contingent Omega is essentially a small (relatively) collection of fancy bluish metal surrounding a blue-teal ball of light. On what can be considered the "front" of the ball, squarely on the ball of light there is an upside down large omega symbol with a small notch near the opening of the symbol, and the whole hieroglyph itself is a far darker shade of blue than the rest of the ball of light. This symbol seems to track whatever is the subject of interest to Contingent Omega, so its safe to assume that's its eye, or at least some kind of optic. The light steel-blue metal surrounding the ball of light makes a distinctly ball like shape itself, with a large circular opening on the front where the symbol can be seen, and two smaller oval openings on the top and bottom pulsate a faint blue shimmer. On the "sides" of the metal ball are two large fin like booms which are twice as long as the ball and protrude backward away from the "eye". These two fins don't seem to have any physical attachment point to the main metal sphere. The metal sphere itself is also covered in very small geometric lines which glow a faint blue color when Contingent is moving quickly.

Contingent Omega is a peculiar entity, with a penchant for bizarre behavior. It often engages in conversation with other entities, both living and non living, and its not uncommon to find Contingent speaking to itself or some other non existent third party. Contingent Omega enjoys asking a multitude of questions, of all kinds, including rhetorical and paradoxical. Generally Contingent is quite friendly, and at least doesn't seem very hostile. It tends to chuckle to itself, and bobs up and down like its on a wave. Despite its quirks Contingent is quite intelligent and whatever it hasn't seemingly catalogued it will make inferences and deduce several hypothesis about a topic without much information. This makes Contingent a rather durable conversationalist, if not tiresome. Contingent also considers itself to be of a masculine nature, though the lack of any biological structures or matter would indicate that this is merely a subject of self identification rather than a biological fact.

Contingent Omega displays very few recognizable traits, or at least it doesn't seem to carry much. Contingent's most obvious abilities seem to be non physical manipulation of objects, by some unknown means, the ability to hover or fly, a non specific ability to jump or teleport very long distances, and the ability to store data like a computer might. It also occasionally emits what seems to be a scanning light from its "eye". When asked about any of these abilities Contingent typically responds with a different answer each time.

One would be hard pressed to learn anything about the background or history of Contingent Omega, or at least learn anything that could be believed. When queried Contingent will respond with a number of odd relations and metaphors, or plainly state a fact which may or may not be true. The best that can be said about Omega is that whatever created it may have lost it on purpose, if it is in fact lost.

So begins...

"Testing one two, one two, testing one zero ten two? What an abhorrent abode. The walls are grid, the floor is grid, even the ceiling is grid. Such a gritty place. Oh, wait, no. That's wrong, its a griddy place, a place of gridding. How did I open up here?" Said the small glowing sphere, in a mostly sarcastic tone. It hovered in place for a few moments longer, leaning in a direction awhile before saying,
"No no, its no use. I would rather find something with more mouths before I threw anymore of that out. But don't mind me, you can stay if you'd like."
The odd ball swiveled in place for a few moments before finally accelerating toward a griddy door and stopping inches before the handle, turning it softly, and exiting the hallway of grid.

Contingent Omega swooped from a second story window and "landed" softly in the gardens of the Borealis Manor. The blue metal sphere turned left, then right.
"Still grid. I must be looking at things from the wrong perspective. I'll just-", it trailed off, freezing in place with utter silence. After approximately three moments it began to swivel back and forth again. Bouncing along in the air it moved through the garden, briefly stopping and emitting a faint beam of light over a few flora before moving on.
"Much better," Contingent remarked, "All I needed was to apply reason to the scene. These flowering angiosperms are far more interesting than the grid pattern from before." Contingent dawdled on awhile longer before slowly drifting out of the gardens, floating in the direction of Wing Cities Main Street.

"Brydle stars and fuastiere pars are all arch-ae to me! Ha-ha-ho!" Contingent Omega sang happily as it passed through the Wing City Plaza. As it reached the center of the plaza the little metal ball stopped and swiveled in the air, nodding up and down as it did several 360s left and right. After a few moments the glowing sphere began pacing about the plaza in wide arcs, as though looking for nothing in particular. It came to rest in front of a child eating ice cream on a bench and floated to about eye level with the young girl. After a nanosecond of scanning the sphere addressed the child, "Nubile life form, is that a frozen treat of dairy-like substance?"
The young girl cocked her head a little, missing a lick for the ice cream, "What?"
The fins along the sides of the sphere bristled and pulsated excessively, "I'm the one asking questions here youngling!" the sphere thundered menacingly, but failing to sound very menacing at all. The young girl just raised an eyebrow with even more confusion.
"Um, uh- are you uh- your a blue thi- a blue ball!" The young girl exclaimed happily. The little blue sphere spun in the air and splayed its fins out even wider, if it were possible, bobbing up and down the whole while. "Astute observation little brown haired one." the sphere remarked. "You are female and of the species homo sapien, if I may say so." The sphere brought its fins in closer to its main core, and its small symbol of an eye peered to the right.
"Did you see how cute she said that?! I'm glad I was recording, that's going right in my file of things I'll classify later." the sphere seemed to say to a someone nearby. "Hey, were you even paying attention?" It flung itself upside down, which was only noticeable because the symbol in the eye was now right side up, and seemed to speak to the air behind it, "Would you please entertain that silly dragard, I must continue my interrogation of this small humanoid... thank you." Flinging itself right side up and around it floated low to about knee height of the young girl, who had continued eating her ice cream while the small blue ball talked with itself.
"You're pretty." She said to the sphere, which was rolling in the air just above the ground. "Actually as you said early I am quite blue, I believe.", it responded. At this point the father of the child beckoned her to him. "Sweetie, stop playing with the blue ball and come on, your mom's waiting for us."
"Bye pretty blue ball!" the young girl gleed as she slid off the bench and hurried to her father, grasping his hand in her free hand.
"Bye you nonsensical nubile life form! I will probably never forget our encounter!" the sphere chimed as it bristled its fins and bobbed up and down. Swiveling in place once more, Contingent Omega began to drift toward one of the plaza's lesser fountains and gleamed into the water, staring at its glowing reflection silently.

Monitor-102 floated above the snowy landscape, flitting about, scanning the white covered trees.
"Where is it? I know I dropped it here. Oh, wait, I didn't drop it here. I can't drop things."
Shrilled the small glowing metal ball, blathering to itself.
"Well, maybe..."
The small sphere moved next to a rock and projected the force which held it aloft to encompass the rock as well, and lifted it a few meters off the ground.
"Oh!"
Exclaimed the ball of glowing blue metal. It proceeded to lift and drop the rock several times, with no indication of stopping.

The sound of crunching snow was all that could be heard in this deserted area of Terra, trudging across the landscape, dragging his scythe behind him, was John Page -AKA 'The Master'-. His dead eyes showed annoyance, his teeth were beared, gritted together but hidden under the gas mask. A small ice cold breeze blew through the snow covered plains, blowing John's black labcoat around and thus showing off the Undead Necromancer's energy storage devices as two relatively large boxes strapped to his waist.

"I have a feeling that guy lied to me..." John spoke to himself, his dead croaky voice was filled with annoyance and anger. "Now I'm miles away from the energy signature and I'm running low on life energy." He sighed, "Why did I have to teleport quickly? I knew that I wouldn't have enough energy! And this pathetic area is devoid of life! There's no way I can absorb some more!"

John continued his aimless walking, unaware of the strange blue ball until an unnatural sound caught his attention. The strange loud banging of something falling, and it was nearby...

He continued his walking, quickening his pace and holding his scythe, ready to swing. He held the scythe upside down with his arm stretched behind him to allow the handle to point diagonally upwards and the blade ready to be swung. However....
"...The fuck?" John spoke out through the breathing of his gas mask as he saw a strange floating blue ball lifting a rock with some strange power and then dropping it. Seemingly having fun in the process. 'That must be jam packed with life energy...' John thought, edging a bit closer before calling out;

"Oi."

John flinched a little at the strange blue ball's quick movements. As it flew at great speeds towards him, John prepared his scythe to defend himself. However, the ball seemed to stop right in front of him scanning him with some strange technology. The amount of energy that could be easily seen now that the ball was closer was at great levels. Much higher than any normal being. Just what is this?

"Are you a doctor? What's your fieldcraft? Do you like guppies?" It spoke towards the necromancer, what the hell made it think John's a doctor? Oh yeah... The labcoat.

"I'm a researcher, I research the properties and nature of life energy while also practising Necromancy. Who are you?" John replied, ignoring the last bizarre question...

John's undead eyes fell to a slightly irritated state, half closed with this orb's idiotic words. A man of science? Didn't he just say that he's a Necromancer? It doesn't matter, just correct the orb and find a way to have a look at the immense life energy.

"I was a man of science, back when I was alive. However my research and creations were 'too much'" He raised his hand and made quotation marks as he lowered the scythe to allow it to be dragged across the frozen wastelands yet again. "I lost all of my research documents because of that. And now I have to start anew..." He sighed a little before listening to the next words of the circling orb, his eyes followed the orb as it came into his view and disappeared behind him again.

"I'm looking for a corpse, but I was mislead to this pathetic land. However, the nature energy here is quite large. Sentient life simply hasn't messed with the natural lands... Yet."

The words sung in what passed for a mind in the orb. Lost research, necromancy, untapped potentials in the energy of the land. The Monitor could detect all forms of energy, but this was a double edged sword, because it could not distinguish between the forms of energy. In fact the Monitor's knowledge and understanding of natural quantum forces and fields was so precise and thorough that it had not considered the different overall forms of energy. The thought of the unknown elicited so much excitement from the little orb that the elation temporarily lifted its desire to leave this land, and silenced all the voices it heard.

"Why your quite right scholar, this is a matter that I've yet to consider!" The orb bobbed, "What more do you know about life and nature energy?" It began to hover closer to John's face when it stopped, and "looked" to the side. "Oh right, right, he did say he was looking for something. A corpse?" The orb looked back at John and flew up a bit. "Your looking for a corpse you say? Hmmm... about that energy, no wait the corpse... hm. What kind of corpse is this?" The orb hovered in place higher than John and in front of him, looking down like a reversed excited dog.

This strange orb really is... weird. It's an amazing piece of high technology which comes close to matching the great technology of John's ex-leader. Right now, there's only one race which can make 'robotic' beings have an AI of such great levels that they become questionable. So this orb is probably from that race, or is some new thing. Perhaps the life energy signature within the metal shell created the ball itself in order to stay alive...

"I know quite a bit of life and nature energy..." John answered, trying to recall as much as he could about these energy states; "There's much more than just life and nature, however, all I remember is pseudo-life energy. Which was an energy state I invented myself."
John slowly bent his body backwards as the orb flew close, taking a couple steps to distance the two yet again before the orb flew upwards. "What kind of corpse? A dead one... Obviously." John thought a little, as something of such high tech, it should know about the next pieces of information. "It's the corpse of a Shadonian, the only race I know which can weave magical energy in with their own life energy, without killing themselves."

"Oooh oh!" squealed the ball, like an excited school boy. "This is all truly fascinating! Magic you say? All "magic" is just sufficiently complex technology! Complex enough that I have very little record of it! We simply must find that corpse, such a specimen is truly compelling! Oh the study, the investigation, I should ready some bookmarks!" The orb wobbled in the air trance like. It didn't seem to notice John for awhile, hanging in the air lazily.

The orb of metal and light snapped to again. "Oh yes, we have to find the body first." It rose high into the air, buffeted by the chill wind. It settled on an altitude far above John, with a sight range in every direction for miles. Yelling down to John the orb's voice echoed and carried on the wind, "Does the corpse still emit a high energy signature? I don't mean to be picky, but detecting a dead organic object among essentially dead inorganic objects would be like trying to spot a grey elephant among many slightly less grey rocks."

John didn't seem to be that annoyed with the orb's existence, it was quite amusing. And it seemed like it can do a great help. There is, of course, a way to track down a Shadonian. Something that magic can't do, at least not what John knows.

"Y'know, I only want the corpse for my undead army..." John corrected as the orb rose up into the sky, yelling down towards John. "You can detect Alpha radiation, right? Shadonian bodies emit this radiation until they are completely broken down. The guy died not too long ago, so it should still be intact."

Alpha radiation results from much heavier atoms, emitting false helium ions which allow for high damage radiation rays. Even a sheet of paper could stop the rays, but anything organic would receive a near lethal dose after only a short period of exposure. Due to the materials and conditions required to emit the alpha wavelength radiation, as well as its short range affects on its environment, detecting it would be no problem as long as it's source wasn't completely covered. But this would require a planet wide scan regardless.

"Alpha you say? One moment John and I shall have the location of this corpse." The ball chimed down. It rose even higher into the sky, slowly becoming little more than a speck. After it reached the ceiling of Terra's troposphere Contingent let out a burst scan, searching the scattered radiation signals that bounced between the surface and the clouds. Sure enough it detected a tight grouping of alpha waves coming from the southeast, deeper into the continent. Turning toward the general direction of the waves, the little orb shot a high intensity burst scan directed straight southeast, bouncing the scan off the clouds and obtaining a surface picture of all alpha radiation before the signal was scattered by the fluid sea to the far southeast. Luckily a pocket of alpha radiation was detected, originating from an island just before the sea.

Satisfied with its results, the orb descended back down to John, whistling happily to itself. Just before it arrived in front of John again it accessed the geography and history of the planet and found that the island it had pinpointed was the island of Shintenchi. "Hello again! We have discussed the results of my scan and determined that I am infallible." The little orb nodded approvingly, looking side to side as though addressing an audience. "The corpse is located on the island Shintenchi to the southeast," it turned and "pointed" with its form. "Are you ready to depart, scholar?"

John stood and watched the orb's working. He was slowly gaining his trust in this orb, it could be a lot of help. And if it manages to pinpoint the location of the corpse, then it's definitely worth being a part of his army. Now what's to happen is to plan everything, what would John do once he gains control of the body? Wage war on his enemies? Or try to gain more allies? Maybe allies would be good.
Ah yeah, that's an idea. That corpse he had reanimated to become independent of energy should still have small connections. Maybe he could tap into it's sight to figure out what's happening?

The orb had returned, seemingly happy with it's scans. "The corpse is located on the island Shintenchi to the southeast," it turned and "pointed" with its form. "Are you ready to depart, scholar?"
John gave off a small giggle through the heavy breathing of his gas mask as a sign of approval, "Of course I'm ready. I can get there instantly if I had the energy."

"Energy? Do you lack a supply of caloric intake for you organic systems John?" Contingent was confused by John's statement. "It would certainly be much faster to simply transmit our quantum signature to that location, there is no need to waste energy running." The little ball had misunderstood John's implied meaning of magical teleportation, and believed he meant running all the way to Shintenchi. The ball of metal floated over to its original spot John had spotted it, blathering about ion energy fields of planets until its voiced trailed off in the wind, and picked up the rock it had been dropping, and floated back to John still talking. "...and which is why I will not require this rock." The orb plopped the rock in front of John. "I in fact only need to re-register our signatures, its as simple as a few calculations and a nudge in the right direction." The orb's blue "eye" began to glow more fiercely and a blue shimmering aura like a road on a hot day began to envelope the orb and John. "Be mindful that normal Newtonian physics don't apply to such quantum transmuting, but for the sake of avoiding further deliberation they eventually settled on a binary code like system of on and off, not unlike the programs running my calculator." The shimmering intensified as the orb droned on about the pros of derived quantum calculations adjusting more appropriately on simple calculators than did complex quantum algorithms. "I know what you're going to say, 'but the algorithms allow more flexibility!' but you have to consider how often such fluid..." The orb wouldn't shut up as the air around John and the orb grew hotter and began to smell of ozone.
Off on the island of Shintechi, in a remote alleyway, two small motes of light began to form and expand outward.

Two motes of light hovered next to each other above the ground in an alley way of La'ita Hara, glowing more and more fiercely blue. Suddenly the lights expanded into two large spheres with a transparent hexagonal grid-like pattern. The air inside the bubbles shimmered and seemed to course with electricity. The electricity began to coalesce and concentrate into two energy like figures, a humanoid form and a small orb about the size of a human head. With a flash of light there appeared a man in a black lab coat and gas mask and a small metal orb with a blue glowing eye hovering next to him. Electricity crackled through the air faintly, dissipating into the crisp evening light. The area around the event smelled of ozone and rich metal, and smoked wisped off of the man and orb's forms.

"Well that was rather odd. I calculated we would be 5 centimeters to the left. Troublesome planet should know when to stop rotating." the little metal ball complained, attempting to cover an error in its calculations. The Omega shaped eye of the ball glanced around, then spun quickly, lifting up. It proceeded to take scans down both ways of the alley way and of the walls and surroundings, and then fell back to the man. "The material of the surrounding structures, as well as the architectural arrangements, suggests these residents are type 1 or 2 civilizations. Further investigation would be required for anything useful like an ethogram of the natives." the orb chimed at the black dressed man. "Shall we proceed to locate that corpse, John?"

"... and that's what I mean by energy. Life energy. I'm already dead." John finished with words to the ball as the teleportation was successful. Causing John to look around, surprised at what this technology is capable of.
"I don't care about that. Planets don't stop rotating, and about the natives, that's even more effort to know about.." John replied to the orb as he reverse summoned his scythe, causing it to quickly dissipate into a separate dimension. "Yeah, let's find it."

And on his word the ball shot up far above the buildings, reaching to the tops of the glistening skyscrapers. On its way up the orb considered what John had said. A walking, animated corpse, and intelligent even!, the orb thought. This John fellow was truly interesting. Finally the orb made it clear of even the tallest building, and its spheres jostled and rotated as a blue pulse erupted from its entire "body".

A quick scan revealed... nothing. "Hm." the ball murmured. No detectable alpha radiation meant the corpse was covered, likely due to the damage from the high levels of alpha radiation that it supposedly emitted. Local authorities may have recovered and confiscated the body for investigation, in which case it may be in a morgue or a special containment, or some other local agent may have taken possession of it.

Monitor-102 was not deterred however. It tapped into the local broadcasting networks and in fact discovered a news report of a radioactive body. No harm was done, but local agent were scrubbing the area regardless. "Ah ha!" The orb exclaimed, and fell back down to John. The whole event had taken a few minutes, and the orb hurried down even faster, as if it was late for an appointment.

"Hello again John! I've discovered that the local authorities most likely have possession of the body, and I am unable to track it." The orb said solemnly.

As the orb went off for it's scan, John began to walk through the streets, trying to also search with his 'vision'. Of course, this kind of vision is something which is nearly impossible for humans to do, hence he spent the many years of his life and death training to gain the vision. This vision, allowed John to view the energies as physical colours/lights; this includes light, life, nature, electricity, magic and other forms of energy.

After a little wondering around, the orb had returned, rushing as fast as it can. "Hello again John! I've discovered that the local authorities most likely have possession of the body, and I am unable to track it." It reported,
"The authorities?" John asked, seemingly annoyed and angry, "If those fuckers have it, then it'll be a very low chance of finding the body." He thought for a little as he continued his wondering, "We may have to kill some high class/ranking person in order to find this body. I need to replace this body anyway," he signified to his own body, making it obvious that he can change bodies.

This john fellow certainly has a fascination with bodies, thought the metal orb. "Well I wouldn't want to cause a disturbence in this local ecosystem, but sometimes science can only progress through extreme means." the orb hummed cheerfully. It spent five processing cycles (which equates to about 4.5 to 5 seconds) fully considering the implications of John's body changing comment. The orb gathered that John was something more then the simple organic vessels he inhabited, latent self aware energy perhaps, or maybe just a fluid consciousness that doesn't need a permanent physical address.

The scope and possibilities of such an ability in an organic made the orb bristle with excitement, and considered abandoning the search for the body to study John. But an echo in the lattice energy matrix that made up Contingent's broken mind reminded him to focus on the energy of the corpse they were looking for. Energy is the richest form of knowledge, completely purity. Access to and knowledge about any energy takes priority. The orb peeked out of the alleyway, surveying the city streets.

"If our odds are slim then we must make haste, before they diminish to near zero!" The orb floated back to John and projected a detailed 3D model of the city in front of itself. "I took the liberty of compiling a map of the city, I'm somewhat of cartographer hobbyist." said the orb sheepishly. "I'll let you lead the way John, your charisma may gain us more access than mine." The metal ball floated to a spot just above John's shoulder, keeping the map in John's sight.

John stopped in his tracks to closely study the map. It's as detailed as ever, an amazing creation from just a simple scan of the city. Scientific technology is amazing! No matter how much it intrigues and amazes John, he still could never get his mind around the subject. His profession is in magic and energy, not technology. Although, it does seem familiar, close to a technological race he had encountered back when he was in that group. "This is an amazing and helpful map. But the technology yourself is familiar, are you a creation or even a being itself of the Gayleipian race?" John asked before listening more to the orb's words.

"I would lead the way, but I haven't been in this area for long. I don't know where any intelligence departments are, nor do I know where to find the people who have access to it." John continued his walking, his dead hand rubbing against the gasmask, about where the chin would be; "You think you can locate any of that stuff? Or even hack into or find any information on the body?"
