Mythos

"That which is not dead may eternal lie, and with strange aeons, even death may die..."

0 · 1,148 views · located in We'Darastri

a character in “The Multiverse”, originally authored by Tearen Wover, as played by RolePlayGateway

Description

"The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far. The sciences, each straining in its own direction, have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality, and of our frightful position therein, that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age."

Our story opens this evening with the recently highly successful Jeanell-Lefloure, a half-elven rogue who has seemingly made a name for herself. Her recent expedition into the countryside manor of the equally recently deposed Lord Halcyax has proven more than lucrative for the young lady. The story moves its focus to the intrepid wastrel as she seeks to pawn away her ill-gotten wares, gained under her presumed graces of her contact, a Yuan-Ti Half blood by the name Sstheno Arkinian.

The city of We'Darastri is well known for its merchant trade in baubles and jewelry. Jeanella has been at her trade long enough to generally know that trying to sell these extremely valuable pieces would attract the wrong kind of attention in some of the more high profile districts of the River City. As such, she has either the option of trying to sell it at a lower profile store on the eastern bank or in the more lucrative if not more immediately dangerous Lower City.

The depths of the Lower City would greet Jeanella with an all-too-familiar blast of cold, stagnant air. After a short, perhaps two story descension into the belly of the city, she would found herself arriving in a dank, musty hallway filled with foot-traffic the likes of which might panic less staunch malcontents. Intelligent undead, fiends, demons, and beings more unspeakable shuffled past in their sullen anti-social way, at least giving the top sider intruder the grace of indifference. Patrols of guards did occasionally brave the as yet-to-be-plumbed depths of these old dwarven tunnels, but such expeditions were few and far between. Now the trink was finding someone willing to barter in stolen goods...

After gathering up no small amount of courage, you manage to attract the attention of a passing Drow, dressed in full spider regalia, as is their way. After sharing a few curt words, the dark elf points you in the direction of on of the Lower City's seedier bazaars. He is rather unsubtle in reminding you to be on guard, flashing his sold black longsword as he turns to take his leave.

After making a few very carefully noted twists and turns, Jeanella found herself within a large, more cavernous section of the Lower City. Distant red lights flicker over head, casting the entire area into a pall of Low Light. This, of course, impeded her elven eyes in no way. A whole array of despicable vendors had stalls and tents set up about the room, the volume hear above more than a whisper for once. Pipes carrying the city's water rattled nearby as undesirables went about their daily shopping.

She approached a nearby Succubus, careful to maintain her distance as she inquired as to who might sell stolen goods. The seductive lady pointed a clawed finger towards the far end of the hall. "Look for the Efreet in the black robe." she offered, along with a quick flash of skin. Jeanella believed she could instruct the demoness on some finer points of subtlety, but was more distracted as she noticed a figure draped in a long blue robe watching her from a nearby doorway. As her gaze lingered however, the watcher bowed respectfully and stepped into the shop. She felt small hairs on the back of her neck stand up as she recognize the figure as a Sapphire Inquisitor, one of Tyretlethen's personal magical spies.

The inside of the shop was, arguably, no less threatening than it's hole in the wall exterior. Various wares lined the black walls of the shop, from glowing magical trinkets to various weapons and even, of course, fine jewelry and clothes. The only real source of light was the Efreet himself, a tall swarthy looking man with red skin, glowing eyes, tusks and hair of fire. Smoke billowed out from under his cloak, betraying his species as that of a type of genie. His level gaze betrayed only two emotions, scorn and greed. "Welcome to the Deep Pocket. I am Soonabi, Efreet and master of...liquidation. What is it you seek?"

It appeared as though three other hooded customers lingered in the shop, but the Inquisitor was nowhere to be seen.

"I'm afraid that good prices and no questions are not...mutually exclusive. Consider if you will, the risk I am taking for you here." Soonabi retorted, crossing his bulky arms over his chest. "But yes, I have a small room just here, if you would like to speak about the value of whatever it is you think I want." he continued, pulling open a ruddy, moldy curtain into what appeared to be some kind of drainage station. Okay, so, it wasn't exactly an actual room, but Jeanella didn't really find herself in a place to complain. The Efreet stepped inside, and motioned for the half-elf to follow. Aside from the somewhat unsettling silence of the other customers, everything seemed to be perfectly threatening about the situation, and in that regard, normal.

"This is quite an array here..." the Efreet said, picking up the golden crown and turning it over in his hands. He pondered the items for a moment before flicking his orange gaze back on to Jeanella. "Where did you find all of this?" he asked, the surprise in his voice an attempt to be genuine. There was something off about the situation, but Jeanella couldn't put her finger on it. It was only when the Efreet pulled out a scroll from his robe and began talking that everything was brought to light. "...because I happen to have a missive here, well, more of a detailed report on a large array of very similar jewelry being taken from the recent tragedy at the Lord's manor not three nights ago..." the Efreet said slowly, before peering at her over the top edge of the note.

"You wouldn't happen to know anything about that, would you?"

"Ah yes, the several thousand gold you no doubt anticipated for this exchange would be just about sufficient for the lowly meal you wish to purchase tonight. I believe there remains nothing to be said, I fulfilled my end of the bargain." the Efreeti boomed, chuckling slightly. At that, the sound of drawing swords and harsh shouting could be heard from outside the room, the voice of a guard telling onlookers to stay back as heavy boots approached the curtain. She had been sold out! By Sstheno? That snake...what did he stand to gain from this?

In the time Darien had been watching the shop, a large crowd of repulsive beings had gathered around the entrance to Deep Pocket, intrigued by the Paladin's Good Aura. Such attention was unsettling, but had little effect on his staunch determination. The time had come to set things right for the horrible actions this rogue had brought upon the Eastern Districts...

Jeanella would hop up on the marginally wobbly table and make an attempt to grab the pipes over head. She managed to wrap her hands around one of the thinner out going feeds, but immediately slid back down the distance she had scaled, the pipe being covered in a foul ichor. She now hung precariously about seven feet off the ground. The Efreeti ducked out of the curtain, content to let the guard go about their business...

The half elf frantically looked about for something, anything, that would help her get out of the reach of the encroaching law below, but was too distracted keeping an eye on the latter to do so effectively. Ensuing this, she scrabbled about in the darkness searching for a stable handhold. He outstretched hands found an old bracket riveted to the wall, that offered a worrying amount of give when she put her weight on it, but manage to ascend another foot or two.

Meanwhile, the guards, at the behest of the paladin, entered the cramped room and looked upwards with slightly confounded looks. They murmured to one another, as one then ensued to conjure up magical energies from his hands. He flung them towards Jeanella, casting a daze spell at her...

The bracket that Jeanella clung to would begin to come loose from the wall, bits of dust and crud falling to the ground far below. It was at this point that the other guard decided to take on a more direct approach. "No, Sir Paladin I do not. It shouldn't be a problem, though." he said. He too, took a casting stance, this time conjuring a small ball of fire into his palm before flinging the bolt at Jeanella who dangled above. The Firebolt flew straight and true, bursting into the Half-Elf's back with a loud boom (8 damage)...

"Now do you wish to comply to this arrest, or did you want to try your luck scrabbling away again, little squirrel." the more aggressive guard spat, giving her a light kick in the side. "Easy now, Theron." the pinning guard grunted, still holding onto Jeanella tightly.
