Naazmat Chakladar

"Yes, I am a Hindu and I am a woman and I am an Indian. But first, I am a person. My loyalty is not to Vishnu or Krishna or Mohandas Gandhi or Susan B. Anthony. My loyalty is to the Constitution and to law and order in America."

Description

PROFILE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Naazmat is in her mid-fifties, petite, with a slight build. Her face is round, with a chiseled jaw and prominent, sloping forehead. Her round eyes are expressive, an immediate tell of her emotional train of thought, but often reflecting a sense of intelligence. She has a dark, rich chocolate complexion, and dark brown hair that falls to her thighs, usually tied back in a single braid. In the center of her forehead, affixed to the bone of her skull, is a small golden bead. She typically dresses in business professional attire when at work, or in a traditional shalwar kameez when not at work or for formal occasions.

History

Naazmat Chakladar was born in 1948, the middle child of three, to Dhamodhar and Bhavani Chakladar, born in near Jaipur in India. Naazmat attended school, excelling in the sciences and social studies, and after graduating high school, went to college for International Relations. After graduating from Syracuse University, Naazmat went to Georgetown Law School, and became a Rhodes Scholar, interning with the upper levels of the Department of Justice as a third year law student.

After earning her JD and passing the bar, Naazmat worked as a public defender for eight years in the inner city, before she served as a special advocate for special education cases in juvenile court for another three years. Later, Naazmat accepted a position as an assistant US attorney in Boston, and after nine years, advanced to the position of US Attorney when her predecessor retired. Naazmat was appointed a federal judge eight years later, and after serving for another ten years as a federal judge, Naazmat became the first ever Hindu woman appointed to a Cabinet level position as the Attorney General of the United States.

Following the American acceptance of statehood in the Aschen Confederation, Naazmat became a Chancellor in the Ministry of Law, replacing Travell.

"Oh come off it," Naazmat shot back. "You know very well what you've done." Turning to Taretha, she said, "She's wanted for mass murder and terrorism. Unfortunately, my government can't arrest her because of a delicate 'political' situation with another government." Naazmat tapped her finger twice on the table as if to underscore her point. "Some of us secretly hope for vigilante justice."

"If you've never been here before, you should know that wars - between governments and between criminal factions - are often fought in this very building," Naazmat pointed out dryly, folding her hands on the table. "Usually without regard to the 'innocent' bystanders." Sighing, she glanced down at her watch. "You should know that Ali here is the leader of an international - no wait, make that intergalactic - terrorist organization."

Naazmat Chakladar stood, but seeing the other two women already at Ruby's side, did not move to join them. Two were enough. She narrowed her eyes as Ali went though. Of course Ali would attempt to help the wounded stranger. It was all about image, of course. "You two-faced, murdering bitch!" Naazmat hissed after the fugitive. "One day, karma will return to haunt you. You can only pretend to be good for so long." What she did not understand was that for Ali, pretending was all she had.

"It does not seem to be nothing," Ali said, stumbling as Ruby backstepped, though she kept her arm wrapped around Ruby's back, supporting her. "Let me help you to a seat, sayyida. You do not look well." She looked to Taretha. "Yea, 'tis unnatural, what you had done. Be you a djinn, some scion of the Adversary?"

But then the summoner had already left. Ali let her eyes drop. She had done it again, driven a seemingly benign individual away with but a few words. "Let me help you," she repeated to Ruby, but the insistence was lost on her voice. "We must sit you down." Ali tried to guide the girl over to the nearest table, tried to help her, prevent her from another nasty fall.

Naazmat Chakladar watched from across the room, arms folded. The Attorney General sank back into her seat, her eyes on Ali. They did not once move from the terrorist. If Ali tried anything, Naazmat would be the first to shoot. She was armed, despite the usually constant presence of bodyguards. Today, though, she had dismissed them all before entering. Naazmat was beginning to regret that.

She motioned to Kisa, sitting up as she did so, watching Ali from her peripheral vision. "Can I get a club soda, on Uncle Sam's tab, please? Thanks."

"I've seen you here before," Naazmat mused, letting her eyes trawl over Kisa, while stil keeping Ali within sight at all times. "It's Kisa, right?" She took a sip of her drink, wishing momentarily that she had had an earpiece like the bodyguards she had dismissed.

Naazmat Chakladar smiled. "Naazmat," she answered. "Naazmat Chakladar." It was nice, for once, not to be recognized as America's Attorney General. With prestige came fame, and with fame, came unwanted expectations and recognition. Sometimes it was nice to be anonymous.

Naazmat Chakladar laughed. "Sit down," she said, gesturing to a seat at the table. "Put your time on Uncle Sam's tab; there's not too much business to worry about. I'm afraid if you got to know me well enough, you wouldn't be so quick to say that, though."

Naazmat Chakladar laughed at that. Watching Ali move toward the door, Naazmat met Kisa's eyes. "She may seem that way, but trust me, Kisa, it's all an act. People like her don't change. They're natural manipulators, and they use their charisma to lure people in before murdering them in cold blood. No regrets. I were you, I wouldn't believe a word she says." The Attorney General stood, peeling a twenty from her wallet. "Here," she said. "That's a tip for you. I'm sure I'll see you around sometime. Take my card too."

Naazmat Chakladar nodded. "You have a good night," she said. "Be safe." And Naazmat left, following Ali out the door into Wing City.

Naazmat Chakladar had been taking in the sights of Langara, admiring the architecture of the museum, when she heard the voice directed towards her. She looked up, fingering her silver Shiva Nataraj pendant, at the man who had spoken to her. A moment passed before she realized why he had struck her with a strange sense of familiarity. Raphael McGregor. Naazmat knew this man. Her eyes narrowed slightly. So he had bought his way off Hadante, once more escaping justice.

"I'm just interested in looking, thanks," she said, her other hand fishing for the appropriate number of cubits based on the sign near the desk. Her eyes never once left Raphael's face. "Can you tell me how long this museum has been open for?"

Naazmat Chakladar nodded. "Thank you," she said, turning away from the counter to look about the rest of the museum.

Naazmat Chakladar wandered across the corridor of the museum, stepping into one of the exhibit halls, looking up at the display to read the plaque beside it. Significantly poorer for the move to Langara, Naazmat didn't particularly mind, but admission to the museum was going to cut into this month's savings. Cubits didn't grow on trees, and Naazmat was painfully aware of the fact.

The move hadn't been easy, and she wasn't sure whether she would stay on Langara, or move to Outlook when settlement was complete. She rubbed her fingers over the words on the plaque as she read them. She had been studying Lingua Anquietas since the announcement of Congress's decision.

Naazmat squatted in front of the diorama, squinting at the Raphael McGregor figurine. She read the plaque next to the diorama, her finger moving slowly under each line as she pronounced each word slowly, stumbling a few times with the unfamiliar language. Naazmat paused after every sentence to make sure she understood them correctly.

After reading the plaque twice, Naazmat stood, shaking her head as she continued around the museum, nodding politely to other visitors. She glanced back towards the corridor, where Raphael was, wondering who he paid off to get off Hadante. Clearly, this had happened during the confusion of the initial reorganization; otherwise Naazmat would have heard of his release earlier. She made her way to another battleship replica, reading the plaque there in the same manner, hoping no one noticed her obvious struggle with the Lingua Anquietas.

Naazmat Chakladar thumbed her pockets, staring coldly at Raphael. "Detonating nuclear explosives in a crowded area full of civilians isn't illegal? Self-defense is proportionate to the perceived threat."

Naazmat Chakladar noticed a few heads turning in their direction. "And you had no idea the area was full of civilians?" Her voice dripped with disbelief, as she spoke in a lowered tone, mindful of the other visitors. "It doesn't matter what type of weapon it was; it was a weapon and it killed over a dozen people, over half of whom were civilians uninvolved with the /alleged/ attempt to pry national secrets from you."
