Naazmat Chakladar

"Yes, I am a Hindu and I am a woman and I am an Indian. But first, I am a person. My loyalty is not to Vishnu or Krishna or Mohandas Gandhi or Susan B. Anthony. My loyalty is to the Constitution and to law and order in America."

Description

PROFILE UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Naazmat is in her mid-fifties, petite, with a slight build. Her face is round, with a chiseled jaw and prominent, sloping forehead. Her round eyes are expressive, an immediate tell of her emotional train of thought, but often reflecting a sense of intelligence. She has a dark, rich chocolate complexion, and dark brown hair that falls to her thighs, usually tied back in a single braid. In the center of her forehead, affixed to the bone of her skull, is a small golden bead. She typically dresses in business professional attire when at work, or in a traditional shalwar kameez when not at work or for formal occasions.

History

Naazmat Chakladar was born in 1948, the middle child of three, to Dhamodhar and Bhavani Chakladar, born in near Jaipur in India. Naazmat attended school, excelling in the sciences and social studies, and after graduating high school, went to college for International Relations. After graduating from Syracuse University, Naazmat went to Georgetown Law School, and became a Rhodes Scholar, interning with the upper levels of the Department of Justice as a third year law student.

After earning her JD and passing the bar, Naazmat worked as a public defender for eight years in the inner city, before she served as a special advocate for special education cases in juvenile court for another three years. Later, Naazmat accepted a position as an assistant US attorney in Boston, and after nine years, advanced to the position of US Attorney when her predecessor retired. Naazmat was appointed a federal judge eight years later, and after serving for another ten years as a federal judge, Naazmat became the first ever Hindu woman appointed to a Cabinet level position as the Attorney General of the United States.

Following the American acceptance of statehood in the Aschen Confederation, Naazmat became a Chancellor in the Ministry of Law, replacing Travell.

Naazmat Chakladar was still here. So was Ylanne, her writer, though she was actually trying to accomplish what needs to be done at work.

Naazmat Chakladar was still there, doing nothing. And speaking to no one, all the while her writer wondered why it was that few people ever wanted to interact with any of these created entities called 'characters'.

Naazmat Chakladar climbed the steps to the Quorum House, a single, rather thin file folder in her brown-colored hand. Dressed in a navy blue suit and pressed white blouse, she had been planning on a day in the office alone when the summons from Maynard had come. He seemed to like springing surprises on folks. Emerging to the small platform in the center of the room, Naazmat looked up at the members of the Quorum, unfazed. "Good morning, Honorable Sirs and Madams," she said softly.

Naazmat Chakladar set down the file folder on the small podium before her, opening it as she turned a page with great deliberation before speaking. "Honorable Members of the Quorum, the People of the United States wish to continue pursuit of justice in the matter of Raphael McGregor's case. Chancellor Travell having accepted evidence that undoubtedly implicates McGregor, it is our position that he does not in fact suffer from mental insanity. Throughout his interplanetary pursuit, McGregor taunted Director Edwards, Director Miyagi, Agent Schultz, and Minister Angelique with statements indicating he would never be convicted in an Aschen court. I have here statements from Agent Schultz recounting McGregor's exact words."

Chakladar held up several sheets of paper paperclipped together, as if to offer them up. "It is our request that McGregor's case be reviewed by a tribunal independent from the officers who conducted the original triad, and in return, we will stipulate no further requests for extradition." She spoke slowly, quietly, her voice radiating calm, and something of weariness of the situation.

Naazmat Chakladar inclined her head, replacing the papers on the podium before folding her hands in front of her. "We simply request that his case be reviewed by a tribunal independent from the officers of the original triad, without considering the decision of insanity. From McGregor's initial entry into America through his capture, he continually displayed premeditation, and an awareness of his actions and their consequences. He intentionally entered America with the purpose of antagonizing agents of our government, and when called on it, he made the decision to flee law enforcement officers, purposefully detonating explosives with the intention of escaping - all of which shows forethought and awareness of his own actions. When pursued, he made comments denigrating the victims as subhumans, demonstrating additional motive and awareness other than his intention to escape the consequences of arrest and trial for his crimes."

"Even so, mental instability in itself does not necessarily eliminate the ability to make decisions with understanding of their morality and social consequences, and should not be equated with insanity." Chakladar paused, glancing toward the papers she had laid on the podium for a moment before continuing in the same soft voice. "Following our pursuit of Raphael McGregor, efforts were made on the part of his father, the Honorable Sire Mollem McGregor of Taura, to have the charges dropped. Raphael himself said on multiple occasions that his connections and influence would ultimately result in his freedom, and we believe that regardless of the veracity of these statements, Raphael shows a clear state of mentality, and ought to face punishment for his premeditated crimes."

The Attorney General let her gaze travel throughout the Quorum, meeting each member's eyes in turn. "We do not wish to intervene in internal affairs of your government, but we cannot ignore the petitions of our own citizens, the families of the victims, that justice is pursued in this case. And so I am here before you today, humbly asking that you consider that grievous crimes against humanity have been committed, and that there is no justice in allowing a murderer to walk free."

Naazmat Chakladar shook her head. "It does not matter whether he is heavily monitored. Raphael McGregor has committed grave crimes, and there is no justice while he walks freely about Langara." Looking directly at Miles Hagan while she spoke, Chakladar let her eyes rest on the man's. "This case is no longer a matter of politics, sir. I freely admit that at its outset, officials of my government made it a political matter; however, the current war has relegated the McGregor case to the back of most citizens' minds. This case represents the apex of many injustices, and for me as Attorney General, it is a matter of principle that I do all that is within my power to ensure justice is pursued."

Naazmat Chakladar closed the file folder, neatly arranging the papers so that they were aligned evenly. She looked at Claire, as she said, "I have said all that need be said, Minister." Holding the folder at her side, she nodded to the Quorum at large. "Honorable Sirs and Madams, I am finished here, unless there are further questions." Chakladar spoke softly, her English slightly accented, though it was almost unnoticeable to all but the most trained ear. She slipped her free hand into her pocket, eyeing the Quorum as she paused, waiting to see whether any would speak to her.

Naazmat Chakladar looked Miles Hagan directly in the eye. "I offer Drakus Flavaar to the Aschen Confederation," she said. "I understand he is charged with crimes under Aschen law, and following his sentencing for his crimes against Director Ziedins, I would be more than happy to extradite him to Langara to face Triad here."

"If Raphael McGregor were turned over to the FBI, he would face a fair, public trial by an impartial jury - or judge, were he to choose - although, as I said," Chakladar continued, inclining her head. "I am not requesting McGregor's extradition. I do not wish to interfere with Aschen sovereignty, as McGregor is an Aschen citizen. If you choose to extradite him, he would be tried in America; however, my request is merely that his case be reviewed without consideration of his argument of insanity."

"I am not requesting that McGregor be sent to America, merely that his case is reviewed by an Aschen tribunal independently of the original Triad officers," Chakladar said, letting her gaze shift between Claire and Hagan. "If he were sent to America, however, whether or not the death penalty would be sought would depend on the decision of the prosecutor assigned the case, and there is also the possibility that he would not be found guilty, or sentenced to death if found guilty."

Naazmat considered. "The terms are acceptable, provided that Tech Con ensures none of the tribunal officers so chosen hold personal or financial ties to McGregor, or anyone in his immediate family. With that provision, on behalf of the United States of America, I accept the terms, and will hand over Drakus Flavaar to whomever shall receive him tomorrow."

The convoy of five cars screamed government as it pulled up across the street from Gambit's bar, a short, diminutive woman stepping from a sedan with tinted windows, waving dismissively at the driver. She leaned over the lowered window, exchanging words before stepping back, waving her hand again, and waiting at the curb. When the convoy departed, Naazmat Chakladar stepped inside the bar, eyes narrowing as she caught sight of Tahira Ali. The Attorney General slid into the seat across from Ali, folding her hands.

"You spend decades running from justice, you wrangle a pardon out of a corrupt government, and then you waltz in here like it's all a big joke or something. You have a lot of chutzpah, Ali." Naazmat leaned back in her seat, arms folded as she inspected the woman across from her through narrowed eyes.
