Nadja grinned sheepishly at Phinx, shrugging one shoulder. “Around any corner could be someone with a gun, a bullet with your name on it. One learns to always expect the worst.” Wrapping her lips around the straw again, she pulled in a sip of her drink, her eyes locked with her companion’s. “My last few days?” she asked when she pulled away from the straw. “When an accountant admits to things being ridiculously dull, you can only imagine.” She chuckled and set her drink on the counter. “Orange juice?” she asked, gesturing to Phinx’s order. “Wouldn’t you prefer something heavier? My treat?”

With a humoring smile, Nadja nodded. “Oh yes, the problem of not drinking on the job.” She shrugged slightly and looked at the orange juice before allowing her eyes to linger almost too long on Phinx’s face. “Shame. I’d really love the opportunity of…” she hesitated slightly, lifting her glass and taking a sip, the anticipatory silence used to her advantage. “Buying you a drink. Perhaps, your next round of juice?” Glancing over toward Viktor as he nodded to Phinx, she tilted her head. “Friend of yours?” she asked, a small smile barely contained.

Nadja’s interest in Viktor increased and she studied him for a moment, filing certain details away for future use. Returning her attention back to Phinx, she nodded. “This company of yours… does it have a name?”

At her comment about Nadja having a dirty mind, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Ah, I’ve given you a horrible impression of myself then if that is how you see me. While I might think of you sexually…” she hesitated here, purposely glancing away almost coyly. “… It is just merely part of my interest in you. How can anyone look at you… your face, your hair, your body, your personality… and not think sexually?” Nadja waved a hand as if it was just a simple fact. “You are lovely. You exude power. I find that sexy. Does that give me a dirty mind?”

Nadja laughed quietly, trailing off with a lingering look to Phinx, as if sharing a private moment with her… as if imagining something. After a few silent moments, she started suddenly and cleared her throat, looking down at her watch. “I’m a woman. Aren’t sales ingrained in our blood?” She laughed again and quickly finished her drink. “Mary, my dear, please don’t think I’m rude. I hadn’t realized the time and I really ought to be going. I have an appointment shortly.” She stood from the stool and reached for Mary’s hand, her fingers lingering for just a moment as she leaned in close, her lips almost brushing Phinx’s ear. “I look forward to seeing you again, even if I can only buy you an orange juice.”

The tip of Nadja’s tongue slipped between her parted lips as she wet them slowly… One could argue the look was intended to convey seduction. Perhaps it was. Or perhaps Nadja’s lips were simply dry. Either way, she held Phinx’s eye contact for a moment longer. “I do indeed have your number, Mary… And I fully intend to put that knowledge to use.” Taking a step back, she held Phinx’s eye contact. Another step. Yet one more before she broke the gaze and lifted a hand. “See you soon.”

And with that, Nadja pushed her way out of the bar.

She came into the bar for a drink. Honestly, that was all. Okay, perhaps she was scanning for Mary as well, but mostly for the drink. And maybe she really liked the atmosphere of Gambits. It had the same feeling of danger that she was used to. Funny, when the Snake bit it like he did, Nadja never expected to miss him. It wasn’t him that she missed, per se. She missed the thrill. She missed the weapons, the drugs, the cars, the women, the men, the intrigue and the money. Oh God did she miss the money.

As she stepped into the bar, however, and heard the words spoken about a game, Nadja’s breath caught in her throat. Her pulse increased. Her cheeks flushed. Her pupils dilated. If there was one thing she could never turn down, it was a good gamble. Wager. Bet.

Although, someone accepted before she could open her mouth. The corners of her lips turned down into a frown. She wanted to play a game… but perhaps it was best that she sit back and watch… to study her potential opponent for a moment before jumping in, feet first. That’s how she got into trouble last time, wasn’t it?

Moving off toward the counter, keeping the object of her intense interest, Ancetus in her sights, Nadja idly ordered a drink and slid onto a bar stool, crossing her legs at the knee. Waiting.

nullWith her lips wrapped around the straw immersed in her drink, Nadja sipped her drink, but she didn’t seem to notice that she was doing so. The lion-men, the frightened male, the bartender… everything else faded into the background. Insignificant. Nadja’s eyes were locked on the dice in front of Ancetus. Her palms itched. She hardly breathed. She definitely did not blink. Her tongue did slip to lick her lips in longing.

Three rolls. Highest total wins. Easy. Easy!

Nadja swallowed, her lips twitching. Just one round wouldn’t hurt, would it? Just one round? She’d just bet small, that way, if she lost, she wouldn’t be out much…. But… she wouldn’t lose. She had a good feeling about those dice. A very good feeling…. For now, she’d just watch.

As Ancetus looked to her, Nadja straightened slowly, her eyes locked with his until he looked away. As soon as he did, however, her gaze shifted to the dice once more. Highest wins. Not hard. Simple. Easy. Just looking at those dice, Nadja knew that if she had the opportunity to hold them, she’d win. She knew she’d win. Her exhaled breath was shaky as she imagined them in her hand, the corners digging into her palm.

No, Nadja. You learned this lesson before. To repeat the same action and expect different results, that would be the definition of insanity, right?

As soon as Ancetus looked away, Nadja leaned forward once more. God, she wanted those dice.

Dice. Cubes. Six sides. Twenty one dots. Twenty one… Blackjack. Twenty one. Per dice. Two made forty-two. Thirty-six possible combinations of how those two dice could land. Add one more, two hundred sixteen combinations. One more, four dice would make one thousand two hundred ninety six. One more…

He’s beckoning you, Nadja. He knows.

Nadja’s eyes lifted from the dice to Ancetus’ face again. He knew she wanted the dice… She could play coy, but her palms itched too badly. She had to have those dice. She had to roll them. She had to gamble.

Don’t look too eager… that’s how you get into trouble.

Leaning back, Nadja lifted an eyebrow to him. The expression was a thinly veiled attempt at controlling herself… one final last ditch attempt to keep herself from gambling. It plainly said ‘What’s in it for me?’

Odds of winning… 50%. Fifty. Half. Either win or lose. Easy.

He had her. Hooked. She still tugged at his line like a fish for a moment, but the truth was that Nadja was quite simply caught. Standing, she moved across the room toward him, her eyes flicking between him and the dice.

“A game of chance, you say?” she asked once she’d approached, leaning her hip against the edge of the table, trying for a look of nonchalant sexiness… hoping that she didn’t look too eager.

Nadja’s lips curled into a smile, her fingers moving to lightly touch the corner of one of the di. “Such assertions,” she commented, tilting her head, her eyes locking squarely with his. “In my experience, the men who make such assertions are often making them to cover up for an untruth. By asserting that a game with you would be purely chance and that it is not rigged, are you not attempting to assuage any trepidation I might have in joining your game?” She leaned forward, her fingers closing around one of the dice, holding it up between them, but maintaining eye contact. “If not rigged, why mention the possibility at all?” She chuckled and rolled the di around in her fingers. “I’ve worked for some powerful men, Mr….?” She let the statement trail off, leaving him the opportunity to insert his own name.

The hesitation was momentary, but Nadja would place the di back on the table before slipping her hand into his at his greeting. “Ancetus, it is a pleasure to meet one who enjoys the thrill of chance. I am Nadja.”

She shifted, leaning once more against the edge of the table, looking down at him as she crossed her arms over her chest, openly studying him. “I did not mean to offend and imply that I figured you as a cheat by my interest in you… and your dice… I assure you, your appearance holds no factor in my intrigue, just as, I’m sure, my appearance holds no factor in your desire to engage me in a game of chance.”

Nadja was one who was used to keeping things close to her vest, even if she did have a terrible poker face. When it came to gambling, Nadja had never been able to resist. Cards, dice, keno, slots, sports, horses, dogs… Didn’t matter. If she could bet on it, she would. Working so closely with the people she did, however, it wasn’t a surprise. She’d seen people lose their legs over a stupid bed… their cars. Their homes. Their family. Their lives.

Yet here she was.

Slipping into a seat opposite him, she smiled. “Yes. Chance.” She glanced to the dice. “Chance has little to do with trust. Luck, yes. Trust, no. Unless you trust your luck… however, that is folly.” Sipping her drink, she considered something for a moment. “What’s your wager?”

At his words, Nadja laughed. “How can you trust your opponent to keep her end of the wager?” Another laugh as she picked up her drink. “You assume, Mr. Ancetus, that you will win.” With a cocky smile, Nadja took a sip, considering the stakes. Placing her glass on the table, she studied the dice for a moment, debating with herself.

“A mark…” she muttered. “Upon my body.” She looked down at her hands, as if visualizing this. “I assume this mark will be permanent?”

Lifting her hand to her mouth, Nadja closed her teeth lightly around the skin on her first knuckle – a habit she’d had when she was deep in thought about something. As far as wagers were concerned, this was by far one of the most unusual. A mark on her body. To what purpose? There had to be a reason for his desire to mark her body… or anyone’s body, for that matter, not specifically hers. How much was it worth to him?

She had an idea on how to draw out the information she wanted without actually asking the question outright.

“Twenty thousand dollars.”

His words caused her brow to lift and she shifted in her seat, uncrossing her legs and crossing them the other way. Tilting her head, she grinned at him challengingly. “The men for whom I am accustomed to working would not consider twenty thousand dollars a ‘hefty sum.’ For them, such a paltry amount slips through their fingers daily… often, they don’t even notice it’s gone.” She paused a moment, sharing a private moment with herself, smiling almost wickedly.

Clearing her throat, she waved her hand dismissively. “However, I understand that to some the amount is daunting. As such, I take back my initial amount. As you seem to wish to avoid the monetary wager, what, may I ask, would marking my flesh be worth to you?”

nullMost women would have trouble countering an incubus, however Nadja wasn’t most women. She’d worked for the seedier side of Wing City for years, and when it came to money, some would attempt the most unusual methods of getting information from her. It may have worked once or twice. But in this instance…

Nadja’s lips curled into an amused smile and she tilted her head, her eyes roaming freely over him, lingering where one would expect them to linger. Returning her eyes to him, she tilted her head. “The question is,” she started, a cocky smirk on her lips. “What do I get if I win.”

The pursing of her lips to control her smirk should make it apparent to him that she was merely joking. Glancing to Zekil, she held out her glass to him. “I’d like another as well, please.” Returning her attention to Ancetus, she shook her head. “As someone accustomed to using her own body to get what she wants, I fail to see how offering me yours will compare to me allowing you to mark my body. If I accepted that, regardless of how the dice rolled, you would win.”

Damn straight she was playing hard to get. This was something that was ingrained in Nadja, and was just as thrilling to her as the feeling of the dice in her hand. Make them want it just as bad as you do. Reaching a hand forward, she captured two of the dice and manipulated them around in her hand. “A little fun,” she agreed. “What do you say to a few rounds? Get a feel for the dice. Loser buys the winner a drink. Start small. Work our way up to the…” her eyes slid over him again, the left side of her mouth lifting in a smirk. “… higher stakes.”

At Ancetus’ question, Nadja remained silent for a moment, manipulating the dice in her hand, rolling them between her fingers. “I guess we’ll find out, won’t we?” she asked in response. Looking down at the dice, she lowered her head, pressing her lips against the smooth plastic before releasing them in a roll. After totaling up the results from three rolls, she pursed her lips. It wasn’t great. But she was feeling lucky. She was feeling really lucky. Lifting her eyes to Ancetus again, she gestured to the dice. “Your turn.”

One more. One. Eighteen was a lousy way to start, but he’d beat her by only one. One. She’d almost won. “Well, Mr. Ancetus, as agreed, I will buy you a drink. Would you care to wager again?”
