The sky had just begun to cloud over, hugging the sun and smothering it from view, laying a damp mood on Wing City. Most went inside, to be sheltered from the rain that was sure to come, and some stayed out, hurrying to their next destination, perhaps, too, to instead enjoy the rain.

One such woman walked down the street in a long olive coat and red heels. Over her head, concealing all her features save for black, charcoal lips, was a fedora.

Clack, clack, clack, went the heels.

Hot steam danced it's way up into Rick's nostrils as he sipped tea from a Styrofoam cup. He sat on a bench outside of the building where his office was located an umbrella over his head, and a manilla folder in his hands as he looked through the papers of another case file.

It had been a particularly easy one too, just some ditzy stripper with a stalker. In his opinion, she kind of brought it on herself and he even considered turning the case down. But everyone had the right to some piece of mind. It was over and done with, the cops had the guy ad now Candy McSlut-Slut could dance to her heart's content.

Rick sighed and looked up into the clouds above.

Just got to wait for the big one.

Rain. Bah.

Nairi's hood was pulled firmly up over his hair as he crouched grimacing up at the sky with baleful golden eyes. The swirling portal to the centre of the Plaza was a distraction in the corner of his eyes. There was an overwhelming curiosity in him that wanted to sneak over to it and explore whatever lay beyond. But, then there was the more cynical, realistic side of him that anticipated that blindly throwing oneself into the abyss was not the wisest of ideas.

In his hand, he rolled a marble between his fingers. Flashes of memories - children laughing in the street, the batting paw of a cat or the probing beak of a magpie. This particular marble hailed all the way from Solinus City to the East, carried the distance by one such magpie who had lost its grip over the outskirts of Wing City when a larger bird of prey barrelled into it.

It had miraculously survived the fall, landing on a canvas and bouncing into the street where it had been found by a bored street kid who had pocketed it, only to lose it in a panic when the portal had appeared in the plaza. And then he had found it, lying alone in a pile of leaves under one of the saplings that decorated the area.

He threw it into the air once, caught it and pocketed it. Overhead, the rain began to fall, in a drizzle at first. Nairi considered finding somewhere else to sit and while away the hours until his next job.

The woman with the black lips had slipped from the sidewalk to the center of the street, never once taking a glance at the man with the tea who sat on the bench or the streetboy who had pocketed the marble. She knew they were there, however. She knew what they were doing. She didn't know why, but that was not the issue.

As she came to the center of the street, she stopped. Right in front of someone driving a car. They honked at her, exchanged a few rude words, and eventually tried to drive around the woman.

In that instant, she dropped her coat from her shoulders.

Now, one might have expected this to be some kind of streaking bet, perhaps some kind of exhibitionism. Perhaps the woman may have been high or drunk. Perhaps she was just crazy.

None of them, not one, was correct. After all, it was Wing City. Those kinds of things wouldn't be commonplace in that situation. When the woman's coat dropped, so did she, to her knees, and the driver could only watch, not in disbelief, but in morbid curiosity.

The woman's skin began to peel off as onlookers further inquired, from a seam split down her middle, starting from the top of her face. Where one would expect to see organs and blood, fall from the soon revealed ribcage, they got something else entirely.

Each strip of flesh peeled from that center seam had scales beneath the skin, and a vicious mouth filled with rows of fangs. They grew and twisted from her body, one staring right at the driver in the car.

And oh, even as fast as he tried to back away, the snake head shot through the glass with a worrying accuracy, gripping him by the throat and tearing it out like any predator knew how to do.

Nexus, was wandering the City at high speeds, hopping to further train his endurance, and happening upon an awful scene. Something that he himself did not expect, nor did he even intended to get involved in. But he was about justice, and this was the opposite.

He unsheathed his hollow through sword that glowed electric blue. He was going to intervene, even though he was already tired and was moving very fast. He came to a skid, jumping off a roof, landing in front of the grotesque monster.

"Let him go, at this very instant!" Nexus eyes sparked an electric blue, as he put up a slight electric field 5 feet in diameter.

Breaking glass. The scent of blood. Of fear.

Nairi's golden eyes turned on Nagara in an instant as she struck, until that point having been uninterested. As though he had been coiled in wait for that very moment since he crouched there, he sprung into motion. His first prerogative was to create distance. He was uncomfortably close to that writhing mass of mouths and sharp teeth, and he did not want to be.

He darted like a bolt up the side of one of the statues in the plaza, hands and feet barely brushing the stone as he bounded to the vantage point on one of the extended arms of the memorial.

There he perched, warily, cautiously. The weight of the pistol at his hip was felt keenly, ready to be drawn, but if this creature was going to be put down without his interference necessary, all the better. It meant less eyes on him, less attention.

"It's a bit too late for 'let him go'..." Sighed Rick as he looked from his case file up at the scene of carnage. The unfortunate driver's jugular had been torn clear out of his neck and nothing short of ridiculous healing magic would prevent the man from dying in mere seconds.

Rick got to his feet and downed the rest of his tea, taking a deep breath as it burned down his throat.

He shoved one hand in his pocket and the other hung lazily near the holster on his hip, observing the...creature that had begun its rampant assault.

Could this be a Stitchling as Mo warned? Have they somehow evolved?

Let him go?

As if in mock humor, the one eel protruding from the woman's body grabbed at the side of its victim's neck, and tossed it toward the brave young man who had stepped forth in opposition.

After an ear-rattling screech, sixteen, perhaps twenty, of these creatures began to extend from the woman's rib cage, going after several people all at once. One went for a young brown-haired lad walking down the street, easily swallowing half his body, snapping it in half. Another went for a group of girls trying to escape down the sidewalk. Several more went for the catboy, trying to cut off his path and reroute him down to the ground, toward the madness.

And yet another twined through the air and aimed a strike for dear ol' Rick.

Nexus was not able to do much about all that was happening, but he would do what he could. Since he was exhausted, he had reserve strength for at least 5 minutes while he regained strength.

Nexus evoked a Double Down Rune on his arm, that would allow for double casting, using less energy. He used a regain spell that looked like sparkling green stars that surrounded his body inside the small electric field. Nexus could cast anymore spells without jepordizing time.

Nexus split into 4 other clones, going after the ugly creatures. They all split off in different direction, using incredible footwork and speed that looked blurry to the eye, in order to save the the remaining civilians that were flushed into chaos.

The main Nexus caught the unfortunate remains of the dead passerby, that was thrown at him. "This wont go without consequence." Nexus stated.

Claws arced around like blades, scything at the darting eels and slashing them, batting them away fiercely. Nairi's body contorted unnaturally to avoid the reaching teeth, and he performed a full frontal flip to escape their grasp. He landed on the dais at the base of the statue, spinning on the spot and gathering his cloak about him before he appeared to vanish into thin air.

In reality, he had melded with the shadow that the statue cast, concealed by his enchanted cloak. Should stay here. Safe. No chance of being hurt. he told himself, crouching in the shade and glaring towards the ... whatever it was.

His hand closed about his pistol. You need to lose the conscience, Nairi. You're not a hero.

The gun sounded from the shadows, bullets flying with pinpoint accuracy towards Nagara's form as Nairi's cloak of shadows fell and he became visible once again. His eyes were narrowed and fang-like teeth bared. He wasn't stupid enough to stay still, already breaking into a run once again to evade retaliation.

"Ay dios mio...." Rick sighed as he realized he had become a target. Rather than rolling away or pulling some fancy magic, Rick just placed a hand atop his head to secure his hat as he hopped to his side to avoid the snapping tendril.

His free hand quickly unsnapped the holster and found it's comfortable place around the grip of his oldest friend.

A lot of things have tried to kill me, and I'll be damned if it this one succeed

Nexus was quickly regaining his strength, evident through the fight of his clones, as they hopped around, and dash top cut slash ans evade the tendrils from the grotesque creatures. The clones were systematically calling out for people to run as they were cutting off any tendrils that dared to victimize another soul. Of course, many civilians were getting maimed because of there only being 4 of the clones.

The terror on the street was made mild as the 'gun totting badass' dodged a tendril so easily. Nexus respected that guy, though it would seem he didn't look to get involved. Nexus would start his counter attack, as he regained his strength.

Nexus flashstepped forward into the main creatures face, cutting off four tendrils in a show of excellent swordmanship. Hey cocked his sword back, and went for a combo pierce to the body of the creature, hoping to end its life. Nexus was wearing armor that day, so he was not moving as fast as he could, but lucky for him, he wouldn't get cut so easily because of it.

The eels would have a very hard time on their hands, it seemed. But only if they actually had hands.

The group that went for the girls were encountered by one clone, and the one who had snapped in half the young boy another. Lifting from the ground, they reared up for very quick, precise attacks. The one which encountered the original mused curiously for a second, as if to state that the consequences hardly outweighed the need for chaos.

Others began to follow Nairi upon seeing the commotion, ironically like a cat chasing a mouse. Several of them grew large enough to dwarf an elephant, smashing their faces into the buildings in an attempt to grab the boy. Some of them were slashed, and shrank in pain, but soon were after the boy again.

Like the creature from myth, as one head was cut off, more sprouted, creating many more adversaries for Nexus to fight.

THe one after Rick persisted, following him at a regular pace, not at all worried about his gun.

I remember when the stitchlings looked like something out of a macabre portfolio.... Rick thought as he dodged, ducked, and deflected.

Now something out of some low budget hentai is trying to kill me......at least, I hope it's just trying to kill me.

The fanged tentacle lunged for his face once more as Rick regained his footing once more. The young man quickly attempted to snap his arm forward and slap the teeth filled maw away with the side of his gun.

But Rick was doing more than just avoiding danger, and soon he'd figure out a plan to put into action.

Persistent things. Maybe made a bad choice. Fuck it all.

A sword was drawn from Nairi's hip as he darted to and fro between the reaching eels, diving and rolling away from the larger creatures with widening eyes. The problem was escalating, not getting easier. The black crescent nether blade sliced away at the heads as they went for him, those few that he couldn't avoid.

This wasn't going to work. They were regrowing.

Nairi hissed bitterly, training his eyes on the vaguely humanoid shape at the centre of this writhing mass of eels.

As one of the larger creatures thrust itself at him, he waited in place until the last possible moment, before he jumped. One clawed hand dug into the flesh of the elephant-like eel as it slammed into the ground with a spray of debris, and he latched onto its side, digging his sword in. The serpent reared backwards, thrashing to throw him loose, and he allowed it. He launched himself at the edge of its arcing motion, pulling his sword free and flying through the air.

He landed on the ground in a roll, regaining his feet in a moment in a feral, crouching position with his free hand pressed to the ground. He was only metres away from the figure, and the eels were all around. The sword flailed about valiantly, fending them off as he pressed forwards, ducking and diving still in an attempt to reach the heart of the threat.

Seek out the source. The mind. Test for weaknesses, trigger points. Hunt the Achilles heel like helpless prey.

Nexus was attempting to hit the center of the beast when more head sprouted out trying to kill him. Nexus dashed back, noticing that the new heads popped out form the tendrils he cut earlier. The little eel like heads are only getting stronger by multiplying, making this all the more difficult. Nexus decided on using the blunt of his sword from now on, but he had to think of something.

As Nexus dodged another barrage of attacks, not really phased by the numbers, sense his speed was keeping him from getting touched, he calculated a counter attack with each parry from the maws of the wretched creatures. Nexus jumped back, and landed on a car. Another eel came barreling at him, and Nexus jumped high, as the car went flying. Nexus landed 20 feet away. A great distance away from the creature.

"Shit." And elephant like creature came barreling at him from a blindspot, knocking Nexus through a building's door, and devastating the inside. Nexus had the wind knocked out of him from that blow.

The other clones were fending much better, sustaining little damage, whilst using the blunt of there swords to parry. Nexus sent a mental message to them, and they all charged the blades of their respective swords, as to incinerate the creatures it struck upon being touched. Every strike would be the equivalent to 4 lightning strikes happening upon contact. This was the maximum amount of load Nexus could handle being split apart.

The head of the beast was butted aside by Rick's gun, smacking into the bench Rick had just been sitting on. It fell over, but the eel merely shook its head and began its pursuit toward Rick again. It snapped several times, trying to rile him up, before darting forward, trying to catch his shoulder.

Heads fell to the ground and squirmed as Nairi slashed, but even more, small at first, growing in size like the rest, wormed out from the center of the host's body and whipped through the air with a blood lust. Three slid along the ground on their bellies, watching the catboy like traps on the ground, waiting for him to get close enough so they could constrict his legs.

Every eel in contact with the swords, electrocuted, writhed and fell as they emitted high, tortured screeches. As they died, with no injuries separating the heads from the body, they were pulled back into the host.

Too close. Too thick. Bad idea.

Even as dexterous and agile as he was, Nairi couldn't last long this deep, with the density of the eel-heads sprouting from the host. The werecat grimaced, free hand reaching into his cloak and pulling forth a throwing knife that he launched towards the humanoid form a short distance away, aiming to slip it through the veil of eels.

In the same moment, he fell back. An eel caught him by the shoulder as he moved, and he hissed in pain, slashing upwards to sever the creature's head. It fell from his form limply, thankfully having only lightly broken the skin. He darted away back to the safety of the shadows to reformulate a plan - observing, trying to figure out how to fight this thing.

He noted that the heads that were incinerated by the lightning-wielding man did not reform and multiply. Perhaps that was what was required, not blades. In that case, he was out of luck. He should just leave it to the other man to deal with.

Should invest in explosives. Too many situations where they would have been useful ...

There we go.

Rick had caught something out of the corner of his eyes that set off a spark in his head.

As the creature slammed into his favorite bench, Rick put his free hand in one of his pouches. As the creature's tentacle came snapping back at him, Rick pulled his hand out of his pouch and, well, shoved it down the thing's throat.

But Rick wasn't stupid enough to just offer his arm up like that. He'd seen the jaws of the tentacles snap through bone like they were twigs, and so he had made sure that his revolver was pressing up against the top of it's mouth, the barrel digging into the wet skin of the roof.

He quickly fired off a shot, and tried with all his strength to pull his arm out before the creature could bite it off.

Nexus got up, two ribs fractured, not too bad...He could move at his normal speeds, but...it would hurt. This has been done on broken ribs, so Nexus was none too worried, just angry. He could be attacked, he could be ridiculed, he could be thrown fifty into the air and attack by a troll. But when someone causes him to involuntarily have to pay for destructed property, he just wouldn't stand for it. Regardless if he could pay for it.

Nexus walked out of the damage building with a slight limp, due to the ribs. He was frowning as he charged his blade, and a black and green glow came over it. Nexus was not dancing around the problem anymore. He saw a boy fighting on a platform a distance away. Nexus jumped mightily in the air, clearing the building, and landing with an incendiary explosion of black and green electricity, that exploded into a crowd of the creatures. Any of them withing the 10 feet diameter that Nexus landed in, would receive a shock equivalent to that of 10 lightning bolts.

He couldn't do this with his sword, for it couldn't handle the output for very long. So the barrier of 10 feet was enough for that. Nexus had jumped into a sea-like pile of the creatures, the boy was in the shadows, and Nexus was hopping to see this end soon.

The clones were ducking and dogding, smacking the detestable creatures with the energized flats of their swords, creating less work as they promptly feel in lifeless like fashion.

Just as it seemed that there would be a larger fight ahead of them, several things happened at once, causing the downfall of the creatures.

With Nairi hopping back into the shadows, and several eels following him even after its brethren fell, and after it realized its prey had disappeared, the eels began to roam through alleyways.

The one after rick had tried to snap down with the force of an alligator when his arm stuck inside its throat, and it had gotten a reasonable grip on the mans arm, enough to put a few puncture holes in it, but not enough to rip off the skin or the arm. The shot went off, and the eel went limp.

Its throat, however, forced down the grenade that Rick had retrieved from his pouch. It went all the way to the main body.

It exploded.

Just as well, for even as Nexus had burnt away so many of the eels, many more were sprouting. And when the explosion went off, all of them, every single one, retreated like a can of worms in a vacuum. There had been screams, tortured cries, screeches, wails, and then silence.

The woman curled up in the center of the street, in a fetal position, wiped out from the effort. The seam down her middle was roasted black, falling apart.

Rick hissed quietly as he quickly inspected his arm. Bright, deep crimson streaked his skin where the teeth had torn through his skin. He'd been forced to pull the teeth along the length of his arm, causing the wounds to resemble long, thin gashes that ran from a few inches above his elbow.

Dammit....she's gonna notice that....

But at least he still had it, and the bleeding was more cosmetic than serious.

Now was the time for the answers. If he left it up to ninja lightning dude over there, the girl would probably get vaporized, along with all the information. Rick was quick to be the first to get to her side, the muzzle of his revolver pointed straight at the back of her head.

"So, are you going to talk or die for the cause?"

It's over? Done? Good. Stupid waste of time.

Nairi crawled warily out from the shadow of the alleyway he'd retreated to, golden eyes fixed on the fallen form of the woman. Prowling in a decidedly catlike posture, he gave her a wide berth as he circled around to make sure she was out for the count. Finally he straightened, dusting himself off and giving the wound in his shoulder a glance and a touch of his hand.

Not too bad. I've had worse. Can walk it off easy-peasy.

Cautiously, he made his way towards the fallen woman, narrowing his eyes at her and coming in close. He scanned her form for jewellery, rings - the kind of personal items people didn't tend to remove. After finding none, he settled on laying a tentative hand on her coat and hoping that it wasn't too new or frequently changed.

Flashing images. Walking through the city in reverse, backtracking through memory. Through the fight, back, scanning for information. What, why, who, where, when? There.

A conversation in a dark warehouse. A woman in a black dress - pale skin and dark hair cut short in a pixie. The dress danced on the ground like water through cracks. Promises were made. The woman upon whom the olive coat was born embraced her.

“Don’t you worry. You will have this city if you’re patient, and none of you shall understand hunger again.”

There were two other figures. There was laughter in the background. Sickening, cruel laughter. A hulking mass stepped from the shadows, an impossibly obese man clutching a butcher's knife. A corpse dangled from his mouth.

Another figure. Unclear, lost in the darkness. A writhing mass of flesh, just flashes of faces, arms, legs tangled together in shadow."...it…it…it’s n-not f-fair!” it protested.

The woman in the black dress offered reassurances. More promises. Wing City. Eden. Solinus. All of Aslund.

They understood. They knew what was required of them.

“Good. Don’t let me down, babies. Make me proud.”

Nairi stepped back from the woman, releasing his grip on her coat with wide eyes. His expression shrank into a scowl and his lips tightened. He had names, a place. Plans.

The scowl shrunk slightly, and a small smirk found its way to his face.

Now he held the cards.

Nexus, seeing that it was all over, powered down, and released his clones. Hey looked at the carnage, and started calculating what was going to be the cost to fix all of the damages that was made by then entire incident.

Nexus hopped over to the crouched figure of the woman, and sheathed his sword, staying silent. He was seething with silent rage for the innocent who died earlier. It was not at all fair. But he stayed silent.

The woman curled up further, hands over her head, not once flinching as Rick pointed his gun to her. She did not speak to them.

Instead, the edge of her lips turned up into a smile. Her fingers stretched out in front of her very slowly. She was in pain, that much was obvious, but there was something that she wanted to...

Her hand lifted from the ground in front of her, palm black, oozing with a liquid much like tar. The stuff dripped from her hand, down her wrist, and engulfed her body.

Before anyone could stop it, the woman was swallowed up into an inky puddle, which, too, disappeared after several seconds.
