"C'mon...don't gimmie that look."

There were two bodies right outside of Gambit's doors. One was a young girl, the other was a dog. The dog was giving the young girl a heartrending stare, eyes wide, ears down. The young girl scratched the back of her neck. "You know, this is crazy! I don't go in there. I'm smart! Smart people don't go in there!"

The dog replied with a high whine.

"Yeah, I know it's the only place open, Mihai! But..." Another woeful whine. "...it's...dangerous...for...ugh."

With much disdain, the bar doors opened, and in came Nanna Cane. One would easily pick out her skinny, underfed frame and her attempt to hide it with baggy clothing. Her hair was up in a rather messy ponytail, and her hands were in her pockets. It would be hard to place her race. She was certainly not Caucasian, like the bulk of the people that came into Gambit's. Her skin was a dark tan, her eyes were slanted, her lips were full, and she had a slightly upturned nose and a round face. Her hair was thick and curly. She was as much of a mutt as the tall, slender, handsome dog that strolled in after her. Something of an African Wild dog and a Pharaoh Hound. Possibly more. They both looked as though they lived on the streets.

Nanna stopped, staring at the man who wore a rather bizarre mask. She felt the hairs on the back of her neck stand on end. She had seen guys like this a lot. Strange people, that was. She was born and raised in Wing City, and usually knew how to stay out of trouble.

Going into Gambit's Bar and seeing a guy like this was not one of them.

Mihai, the dog, stuck close to Nanna, eyeing the man just the same, his head ducked low, tail between his legs. As great a dog as he was, with a mean bite, no less, he was a coward.

"Ah...hey..." said Nanna, averting her eyes from the man.

Nanna saw the gesture, and barely trusted it. She whirled around as another guy entered, and instantly she felt terribly uncomfortable. So did Mihai, who lowered himself so low to the ground that he was crawling. He retreated between Nanna's knees. She really did not have the patience for that. "Mihai...!" she chided, "Get out of there! This is your fault in the first place!"

The girl closed her eyes, sighing before she made her way to the counter, just to the side of the strange masked man. She kept her eyes on him just in case, and ordered a Philly cheese steak from the menu.

"Ah...sorta..." she said to Brian, sitting on one of the stools. Mihai put his face in her lap, giving her a wide-eyed, unsure gaze, which was brought to the man in the mask. "Hey, no need to turn away. I'm just...it's fine, okay?"

Nanna was smart, but she was also very kind. Oftentimes too kind. As she waited for the food, she glanced at both men with the same scrutiny as the dog.

She looked between both men.

"Ah. Nanna. My name is Nanna. Nice...to meet you both..." She held out both hands with caution, then simultaneously shook the hands of Brian and Doctore. The dog growled in annoyance.

"Oh! And this is Mihai."

The dog looked at the bone doubtfully.

He had some bad experiences with food that did not come from Nanna's hand. He gave the girl a questioning glance. Nanna was not sure what to say.

"Um...I've come here for food. Everywhere else is closed but here," she informed him. Just on time, the Philly cheese steak came. It was wrapped, and the girl could not be more happy to see it.

"Ah! And here it is. Um...maybe another time! I really...really should go! Sorry!" she said, running out the door, the dog in tow.

Gambit's Bar had been silent nearly all morning. Now it was afternoon. That had to change.

A dog burst through the doors, some bizarre mix of a wild dog and Pharaoh hound, and skittered to the counter on long, thin legs. It leaped up onto the surface, then down behind it, where it hid.

Storming in right after was a young girl. She was perhaps fifteen, and quite short for her age. She was lanky, malnourished- anyone could tell well enough, despite the amount of baggy clothing she used in an attempt to hide it. She ran her fingers through thick, curly hair and panicked.

"Mihai! Dammit, where are you?"

Nanna turned, just as she heard footsteps behind the door. Her face flushed. It was always a bad thing to come into Gambit's. She had avoided it nearly all her life until the night before. Why? Mihai. That damned dog.

She backed up as two people entered, scuttling to the counter as quickly as she could. She had been relieved the place had been empty, but now, with everyone spilling in, she was on the verge of a heart attack.

"Mihai! Come on, lets get out of here!"

Nanna was lost.

The young girl looked around warily in the dark, her arms wrapped around herself. She had on only a grey tank top and a pair of cargo pants. Inside the many pockets, she had a switchblade, a few dollars, and a dead flashlight.

The young, tan-skinned girl sighed, rubbing her arms. It was terribly cold out, and she knew she would have to sleep somewhere outside again. In the very least, she had Mihai, the large dog who strode confidently next to her.

"We'll find somewhere soon, alright, Mihai? It's going to be a huge mansion. And we'll be able to eat all the baby-back ribs we want."

The dog's ears perked up. It looked around, peered into the darkness, and whined loudly to let Nanna know.

Oh, and she knew already. One of her hands curled into the dog's leather collar, trying to hold him back. If it was something dangerous, she would let him go. If it was just another normal Joe, or someone who didn't mean any harm, she would keep him secured.

"Who's there!?" she called. Her voice, though mostly confident and strong, wavered from fear just barely.

Romance?

Ehhhk...that wasn't her thing just yet.

She kept beside the large dog, crouching by him. She could still book it pretty quickly from this position, so in the case that this was some creep...

Her eyes pinned onto the face of a fairly attractive young man (who she did not doubt was still at least six years her senior). She got up slowly, keeping her hold on Mihai's collar tight. The dog whined again.

She had never held onto Mihai because she was afraid he would attack, but because the dog was a damned coward.

"Uh...nothing special. Just...walking around." A badly constructed lie. "Yeah, it's a dog. What about it?"

Nanna froze. Even her breath halted for a moment.

"Oh. Um. Then I should probably get out of your way, right?" She nodded, but as much as she tried to move, she found that her gigantic dog had frozen, too. "Mihai! C'mon, boy! This isn't the time!"

She looked up to the man once more. "So...you're meeting someone int he middle of the night? That's kinda weird, if you ask me."

"He'll move! I promise he'll move. You think...you really could get us to the city?"

Golly, the streets of that place was almost worse than the woods. Did she want to get there?

She supposed she had no better choice. Her grip tightened on the collar, enough to briefly cut off the dog's airway. The animal choked, then backed away from Nanna, staring at her in a manner that said, "Human, what are you doing?"

"Hey, don't look at me like that! You wouldn't move! Now, come on!" said Nanna, beckoning. She looked up to the man, blinking uneasily.

"You're not going to do anything weird, right?"

Nanna stepped carefully beside the man, keeping at least five feet between them warily. The dog did the same.

"Mr. Tinker?" she asked. A smile twitched at the sides of her mouth, but she managed to keep it down. Especially using the fear worming around in her belly. "I'm Nanna. Cane. Call me either. This is Mihai-" She pointed to the dog. "Um...thanks."

Nanna stepped over the root with ease, but the dog had not taken heed of Tinker's warning, and promptly tripped over it, falling onto his face.

With a sneeze and a groan, the dog galloped towards them to catch up. Nanna's eyes rolled. "he's a little more than cowardly..." she mumbled. The dog snorted in debate.

"So...who are you meeting this late at night? And why? You're kinda pale. Are you some kind of albino or somethin'?"

No.

She didn't get his meaning.

Nanna was intelligent, sure. She could get herself out of most any situation she found herself in, and she was better at avoiding them, but she was young, and her mind never had the time to settle and think about such things as Cyrus was hinting at.

"Well...I guess if you're skilled or powerful then you'd want to be a thrill seeker. The only thrill I look forward to is the next meal." she replied. Mihai sighed in agreement.

Slowly, Nanna put the pieces together.

Time to kill.

Next meal.

Thrill seeker.

He denied that he was skilled and powerful, but...the way he was speaking...Nanna couldn't trust it. She wrapped her hands around her arms to hide the fact that they were shaking. Mihai took note of it. He had known the girl long enough to figure out the signs, and he was smart enough, too.

"I...don't need taking care of. Really." Her eyes scanned the woods. Could she run fast enough? Climb something? Hide?

Nanna barely had time to think, but her tripped-up feet did it for her. She fell to the ground right as the vampire lunged, then attempted to crawl under a convenient rock she saw just up ahead. She was small. Skinny. Lithe. He wasn't. If she could just get to it...

Mihai wasn't far behind, his tail between his legs. He knew this guy didn't mean well!

"If it means I'm gonna live, then I really don't care!" she called back. She had been so surprised she had gotten away. The trip had been completely unintentional. She thought he was faster than that.

"You're a slow vampire. Or werewolf. I really don't know which you are yet." she said as Mihai curled up next to her, shivering like a leaf in a hurricane.

"Yeah, you expect me to believe that? I've had my share of creeps who've promised the same thing! Lucky for me I'm a lot smarter than that! Gonna have to try harder! Or just leave!" she spat. She watched him closely. "What are you doing?"

Mihai, even in his fear, peered closely.

"You can wait until the sun comes out and burn!" she growled. She was scared, but feisty. More so than her failure of a guard dog. "I was born in Wing City! I know how it works, here! So what if I'm an orphan? I don't have a sob story for you! I'm old enough to take care of myself. I'm well enough off."

Which seemed like a lie. The girl was so skinny and malnourished. She probably had not eaten in the past day. But that did not matter right now.

What mattered was that there was a vampire in front of her, trying to make her into a meal, and she was getting cramped under that rock.

"I'm sure you're just saying that. This rock has to weigh a ton. You even said you didn't think you were particularly strong." she shot back. However, that he had said that got her thinking again. Where to run to? Where to hi-

"-iieeee." Something had run up her back. Pushing her hand down her shirt, she panicked, hand clamping around something long, wriggly, and with lots of crawly legs. She tossed it out at Cyrus with a loud "GAHK!"

It was a centipede.

"You look hungry. I think my theory is proving correct. You can't do anything." said Nanna, scratching her back. She could still feel its legs...

She was partially disappointed the vampire had not panicked, either. It was meant to be a distraction. "So ripping my throat out isn't going to please you enough? You have to burst my eardrums, too?"

Mihai wheezed in laughter. A sort of half-bark, half-cough of a sound.

Nanna was not amused.

She watched, however, with narrowed eyes and a bad temper that was only getting worse the more cramped she became. Mihai rested his head in her lap, heaving a sigh.

"Yeah. And?"

"As talented as growing grass. And just as amusing," Nanna replied flatly. She wrapped one arm around Mihai, frowning. "Can you leave? And, y'know, not track me down? I like my hemoglobin inside my body, just for the record. I'm already slightly anemic. Maybe you should go see that friend of yours you were looking for. I think they're waiting."

Anything to avoid this. And another poem. She wanted nothing to do with this situation at all. It was simply awful.
