Natalija Drulovic pushed open the door to the bar, glancing left, then right, then patting her pocket all as she strode inside and headed to the counter. Natalija was a woman of fairly short stature, with short, straight dark brown hair left to curl around her face, dressed in jeans and green polo shirt. Her hair appeared uncombed, her shirt wrinkled, and her eyes ringed by dark circles. She leaned over the bar, looking for a bartender. "I want a beer."

When the bartender handed Natalija her glass of chilled beer, she clasped her hands around it, taking a long sip. To anyone who took a good glance at the fairly young woman, Natalija's features seemed to resemble those of a familiar face from the news -- Arianne Drulović. She let the beer wash down her throat. It wasn't particularly good beer, but in a place like this, with its reputation... Well. What could one expect? Certainly not the finest selection, although Natalija had to admit that it was quite broad.

She looked around the bar, watching Jesamine, Aleksandar, and Saphera for a moment before turning her dark eyes to Leila and Nurey. So many faces here. Then again, Gambit's Bar was one of the most popular destinations for locals and tourists alike. Strange. Place looked more like a war zone than a bar.

Natalija Drulovic downed the rest of her beer, setting the empty glass on the counter as she dug through her dark blue, leather purse for a five Credit note, sliding both glass and payment toward the bartender on the other side of the counter. "Thanks," she said, heading toward the door. Natalija paused when she saw the newspaper rack and, glancing left and right to ensure that no one was watching, swiped one of the latest copies of the Terran Independent. Deciding she would rather read the paper while still inside the bar -- as opposed to outside in the car, alone and in the cool summer evening -- Natalija took a seat at an empty table near the door.

Some report was playing on the news, switching between clips of some sports game and a political talking head discussing something that was probably rather boring. Natalija could see both the posted menu hung on the wall behind the counter and the bar's infamous bounty board on the other side of the counter. Now that, thought Natalija, was bizarre. She laid the paper out over the table, looking at the front page story. The hostages. Of course. What else was new? Natalija sighed, skimming the story quickly for any news. But of course there was none.

"Fuck this," she said quietly, trembling. From the right angle, one could see lines of moisture appearing along the edges her eyes, smudging her mascara and eyeliner.

Natalija Drulovic remained in the bar for a good ten minutes, flipping through the newspaper rather capriciously. She folded it together again when done and stuffed it unceremoniously into the stand from which she had taken it, slinging her purse once more over her shoulder and heading for the door. Javor would be wondering where she had gone. At least, she thought with a bit of reassurance, the kids were at their uncle's place, out of contact with the uncensored brutality of the world in which Natalija and the other "grown-ups" existed. She shoved the door open and disappeared into the darkness, looking for a taxi.

Well. Maybe it was time to return, to see whether Gambit's Bar held true to the reputation Natalija had heard since coming to Wing City. She needed a drink anyway. The slight, dark-haired woman pushed open the door to the bar, stepping inside to a quiet Sunday night. Dressed in a purple sweater and jeans, she had let her hair down, framing her face. From the right angle, she seemed to resemble the Terran Intelligence Director, although she was decidedly younger. Natalija headed for the bar, looking up at the menu mounted behind the counter.

Natalija hadn't had a good, strong drink in several days. She didn't really know any of the other bars in the area, other than what was apparently the city's most infamous one. So here she was. For the second time in about two weeks. She strode quickly along the well-lit sidewalk of Main Street before pushing open the rather seedy-looking door and stepping inside. In the bar's dim light, the slight, dark-haired woman would bear a striking resemblance to a familiar face from the news for those who watched or read it.

But other than that, Natalija looked like any nondescript, average human being. She opened and closed the door like any normal person would, and she was dressed in jeans and a casual jacket, nothing ostentatious or noticeable. She headed toward the bar, frowning at the electronic menus, and looked up at the physical menu mounted behind the counter -- between a newsstand on one side, and the bounty board on the other.

Natalija appeared disheveled, her shirt obviously unironed, her hair uncombed and falling haphazardly about her face. Dark circles ringed her eyes, and her cheeks looked a bit hollow. She approached the counter, leaning over it to stare at the menu. Fried chicken, pizza, soup, salads. Geez. It was a fucking bar, for Pete's sake, not a sit-down restaurant. Then again, Natalija noticed, there were several tables and booths inside, and most filled with patrons -- of the most unusual sort. She rolled her eyes and turned back to the menu.

"Whatever happened to normal, plain beer?"

"Can I just have a beer?" asked Natalija, leaning over the counter and tapping her fingers. "A normal beer. Nothing special. Just... plain... beer. Thanks." She waited while the bartender went to find "normal beer," and climbed, a bit awkwardly, onto one of the barstools. She leaned her elbow onto the counter, and propped her chin on her fist, swinging her legs over the stool.

Natalija Drulovic eyed Cryoface with a curious look. Since when did snowmen walk and talk? Well. She had seen stranger sights in Wing City. Bizarre and unsettling city in which her mother had chosen to live. Natalija was glad she was only going to be here a few weeks at most. At most. She kept telling herself that, anyway. "Thanks," she said, sliding a ten Credit bill to Cryoface. "All those fancy kinds of drinks on the menus; I had wondered if you had any. You know. Normal beer." She caught Kazuo looking in her direction and shot a hardened stare toward the Japanese-looking man. Probably a perv.

Natalija Drulovic glanced at Mae besides her. "Nah," she said. "Normal beer suits me fine. I don't have much taste for all these fancy schmancy drinks a lot of folks like. Back in college, yeah, when I could afford them. But normal beer -- just plain -- it's quite good. Quite refreshing. Where I'm from, you ask for a beer, you get beer. Period. No questions asked, no little pieces of fruit stuck on the rims of the glasses. In a can. Just like this." She held up her can of beer before popping it open and taking a sip.

"Hell no," Natalija replied to Motoko, rolling her eyes. "I hope to God I don't look government. Or lawyer. I work at a school. A fucking high school. Why?" She was suddenly very conscious of the fact that she looked very much her mother's daughter. The backhanded compliment/insult that had followed her her entire life was now coming back to haunt her. Yup. It wasn't churchgoing folk or neighbors or distant relatives anymore. It was strangers. Fucking strangers.

"Director of Marketing," replied Natalija, taking another swig of her beer. Ice-cold, too, just the way she liked it. She smiled, the expression an eerie mirror of her mother's characteristic smiles. "Nothing particularly interesting. I do the school's website, the newsletter, write shit for the local paper. I work with the admissions people. A bunch of smiling faces, really. A little too happy for my tastes, but the job pays well, and it is a nice school, if a bit preppy."

"It's grades eight through twelve, students thirteen to eighteen roughly, in ages," said Natalija, shrugging. She drank some more of her beer. "We accept applications up through March each year, and begin to accept them in September. What?" Natalija noticed Motoko looking at her a bit strangely. "Do I look funny to you?"

Natalija suppressed a groan. Great. Now Motoko would know EXACTLY where she thought she'd seen her. "Hold on," she said, fishing through her purse. She slid one of her white business cards form her wallet, zipped her purse shut, and handed the card to Motoko. Natalija Drulović, Director of Marketing, Ignatius Loyola Christian Academy. "I don't think I ever got your name? I'm Natalija."

Natalija took the card, raising an eyebrow at the title and company. She slipped it inside her purse and returned to her beer. "Ha. I'm not a teacher," she said. "No way in hell. I just do the marketing. It happens to be a school. If I get an offer for a better paying job, I'll take it. I barely make forty thou right now."

"I don't live around here," replied Natalija with a shrug. "Hell, half the people who live here don't want to, or are only here because they work for the government or are traders are something like that. I don't want anything to do with that kind of shit. People get killed around here like you wouldn't believe. Ridiculously high mortality rate." She took another swig of her beer, shifting her weight on the stool. These things were decidedly uncomfortable.

Natalija Drulovic scowled, her expression visibly darkening. "I'm in town for a while. What, don't read the news?" She nodded to the newspapers in the stand beside the counter. The photos and names of the twenty Terrans taken prisoner were displayed prominently on the front page. Her mother -- whose picture resembled Natalija quite closely -- was among them. She downed the last of her beer. "Hey," she said, looking over the counter. "Can I get another?" She waved another ten Credit note, sliding it across the counter.

"Whatever," Natalija said, still waiting for that second beer. She tapped her fingers against the counter. "I don't really care what's happening in the news. This was kind of unavoidable though."

Natalija looked at Kazuo, who had seated himself on the stool beside her, as Motoko left. She rolled her eyes again. The Japanese-looking man was back. And here she had thought he had left well enough alone. She laid her head down on the counter, pretending she was invisible. Shit. As if she didn't have enough to deal with already.

Natalija Drulovic lifted her head from the counter, glaring at Kazuo. "The hell? You were staring at me for quite a while when I first came in here. Besides, what the hell is a Taiyou doing here? I thought your kind left." When her beer finally arrived, Natalija popped the can open and took a long, refreshing sip.
