Description

'Sweet Echo, sweetest nymph, that liv'st unseen
Within thy aery shell
By slow Meander's margent green,
And in the violet-embroidered vale,
Where the love-lorn nightingale
Nightly to thee her sad song mourneth well;
Canst thou not tell me of a gentle pair
That likest thy Narcissus are?
O, if thou have
Hid them in some flowery cave,
Tell me but where,
Sweet queen of parly, daughter of the sphere,
So may'st thou be translated to the skies,
And give resounding grace to all heaven's harmonies.'
-John Milton (1608-1674), 'Comus'

Echo was a beautiful nymph, fond of the woods and hills, where she devoted herself to woodland sports. She was a favourite of Artemis, and attended her in the chase. But Echo had one failing; she was fond of talking, and whether in chat or argument, would have the last word. One day Hera was seeking her husband, who, she had reason to fear, was amusing himself among the nymphs. Echo by her talk contrived to detain the goddess till the nymphs made their escape. When Hera discovered it, she passed sentence upon Echo in these words: "You shall forfeit the use of that tongue with which you have cheated me, except for that one purpose you are so fond of- reply. You shall still have the last word, but no power to speak first."

This nymph saw Narcissus, a beautiful youth, as he pursued the chase upon the mountains. She loved him and followed his footsteps. Oh how she longed to address him in the softest accents, and win him to converse! But it was not in her power. She waited with impatience for him to speak first, and had her answer ready. One day the youth, being separated from his companions, shouted aloud, "Who's here?" Echo replied, "Here." Narcissus looked around, but seeing no one, called out, "Come." Echo answered, "Come."

As no one came, Narcissus called again, "Why do you shun me?" Echo asked the same question. "Let us join one another," said the youth. The maid answered with all her heart in the same words, and hastened to the spot, ready to throw her arms about his neck. He started back, exclaiming, "Hands off! I would rather die than you should have me!" "Have me," said she; but it was all in vain. He left her, and she went to hide her blushes in the recesses of the woods. From that time forth she lived in caves and among mountain cliffs. Her form faded with grief, till at last all her flesh shrank away. Her bones were changed into rocks and there was nothing left of her but her voice. With that she is still ready to reply to any one who calls her, and keeps up her old habit of having the last word.

Narcissus's cruelty in this case was not the only instance. He shunned all the rest of the nymphs, as he had done poor Echo. One day a maiden who had in vain endeavored to attract him uttered a prayer that he might some time or other feel what it was to love and meet no return of affection. The avenging goddess heard and granted the prayer.

There was a clear fountain, with water like silver, to which the shepherds never drove their flocks, nor the mountain goats resorted, nor any of the beasts of the forests; neither was it defaced with fallen leaves or branches; but the grass grew fresh around it, and the rocks sheltered it from the sun. Hither came one day the youth, fatigued with hunting, heated and thirsty. He stooped down to drink, and saw his own image in the water; he thought it was some beautiful water-spirit living in the fountain. He stood gazing with admiration at those bright eyes, those locks curled like the locks of Dionysus or Apollo, the rounded cheeks, the ivory neck, the parted lips, and the glow of health and exercise over all.

He fell in love with himself. He brought his lips near to take a kiss; he plunged his arms in to embrace the beloved object. It fled at the touch, but returned again after a moment and renewed the fascination. He could not tear himself away; he lost all thought of food or rest. While he hovered over the brink of the fountain gazing upon his own image, he spoke with the supposed spirit: "Why, beautiful being, do you shun me? Surely my face is not one to repel you. The nymphs love me, and you yourself look not indifferent upon me. When I stretch forth my arms you do the same; and you smile upon me and answer my beckonings with the like."

His tears fell into the water and disturbed the image. As he saw it depart, he exclaimed, "Stay, I entreat you! Let me at least gaze upon you, if I may not touch you." With this, and much more of the same kind, he cherished the flame that consumed him, so that by degrees be lost his colour, his vigour, and the beauty which formerly had so charmed the nymph, Echo.

She kept near him, however, and when he exclaimed, "Alas! Alas!", she answered him with the same words. He pined away and died. When his shade passed the Stygian river, it leaned over the boat to catch a look of itself in the waters. The nymphs mourned for him, especially the water-nymphs. When they smote their breasts Echo smote hers also. They prepared a funeral pile and would have burned the body, but it was nowhere to be found. In its place was a flower, purple within, and surrounded with white leaves which bears the name and preserves the memory of Narcissus.

Orestiad Echo still mourned the loss of her dear Narcissus, and remain by the riverside from which he passed, admiring those flowers which were in memory of him. Oh how she missed looking upon that beautiful face of perfection in her eye. A single finger would move to touch upon the white and violet petals of his namesake ever so gently as Echo knelt down upon the riverbed.

But the peace of the near forest and surrounding area would be interrupted with a most unnatural force. The Gods perhaps? Becoming quite startled, and witnessing the strange portal, Echo dove into the river lest she become the wrath of the Gods once more. But... her curiosity would beckon her to not flee, yet remain to see what truly disturbed the air.

Without creating a ripple on the shimmering water's surface, Echo's crystalline eyes would peer from the top, exposed to be seen in her bravery. Never before had she seen a creature of that making, and it intrigued her, even when he did draw weapon and arrow.

Orestiad Echo never let her intent eyes leave this serpentine creature as he discovered for the first time this area. Though as he approached the water, the nymph's interest would grow even more. He stared at the water as did Narcissus once had before her lover laid waste. Oh! What a crime it would be for another being to come across the same fate as dear, dear Narcissus. But as he tore his eyes from the water, Echo's fears were calmed.

As he spoke, a smile spread along her face more lovely than the morning dawn spreading along the horizon. Partly, the nymph would reveal more of her visage and repeat a single word to him.
"Home."

Being cursed as she was by Hera, the Orestiad was forever doomed to never speak her own words but merely repeat those that were spoken before her. Always to have the last word, but never her own.

Orestiad Echo was almost saddened to see this creature leave though her heart leaped as it turned back towards her immediate direction. Wanting to meet it, the nymph made her way to the edge of the river bank, the water hardly stirring behind the creature. As Echo rose from the water, her complete naked form would be revealed to him, parts of the woman concealed by the wet hair of her head. Any mortal man would have instantly fell in love with such beauty.
What does you want?

She would reply to him, attempting so desperately to communicate with the being. A sorrowful expression laid on her features while hands were held out to him in a pleading manner. Oh if only she had the ability to explain to him what had happened.

Unafraid of the beast, Echo slowly approached him still, her footsteps never heard upon the damp floor of the forest, nor did they even bend a single blade of grass. Now just a few feet away, Echo would stand there with hands clasped before her bare chest and await for him to speak more words to her.

Orestiad Echo would repeat him once more.
Speak...!
Though her tone was more urgent and desperate against his rough and demanding one. Tears welled in the fragile beings eyes, daring to spill forth from the weak grasp of her lashes.
Speak...
Echo would call again to him, that silken voice growing more quite and broken as the moments passed on. How she despised Hera for this cruel and unjust punishment, for how could she disobey Zeus?

Echo had been slightly frightened at his intimidating form though she remained resolved to stay. It had been so long since another had come to this place when she was here as well.

As if he would understand her story, Echo quickly bent to pluck one of those fabled flowers from the ground and hold it out to him in offering; a narcissus.
"Mortal."
Her lover had been mortal and that very mortality had allowed him to lay waste to his own existence. Please let him know this story at the offering of this gift, Echo silently prayed to herself.

Orestiad Echo could hear beings within the building, beings spoke, and thus she would be able to speak to them as well. It was a beautiful place for her, and she knew as soon as she stepped foot within the building that she'd never want to leave ever again. Here was her salvation from the terrible wrath of Hera. Blame could be placed upon Zeus as well though for it was he that wished her to trick his wife and weave a story to distract Hera.

A rather small and fragile hand was placed against the broken door before a naked leg crossed over the threshold. Cautious the nymph became but excitement caused that tiny heart to beat rapidly against the hold of her ribcage.

The small woman finally came into the room, and a smile never more beautiful touched upon her face as beings were indeed, spotted within. Now only if they would speak for her.

Orestiad Echo could have leaped for joy at the sound of the most glorious voice she had ever heard! Oh what a voice it was indeed, though any voice that broke silence was beyond magnificent to the Orestiad.
I don't want...
Echo would do exactly what her name implied for that is how an echo came to be in the first place.

Orestiad Echo now walked further into the room after being passed up and dwarfed by a man. He made not a sound though with his voice and thus, the nymph could not speak to him. Such a travesty the poor creature suffered each day, and oh how she loved to hear her entrancing voice to which even the Gods envied.
Sounds filling...
Yes, sounds. Beautiful and wondrous sounds to speak forth from her lips!

Echo, in all her naked and petite form, stood there in the middle of the room awaiting even more words to pour from that woman's lips. Her hands clasped together before her chest and Echo bounced on the balls of her tiny feet. What a blessing she had discovered. Oh if only she had been able to speak like this when Narcissus was discovered at the river bank by her mint hued eyes.

Orestiad Echo took a single step forward towards the woman when she addressed her so openly and warmly.
Echo be within this very room.
The nymph would point to herself, then pull from her hair the Narcissus flower to offer it to the woman. Surely she would understand that the legends were very true, and standing before her now was indeed that fabled Echo.
Enjoys voice...!

A silent laugh would be made, shaking her thin shoulders slightly while Echo still held out the flower to Nemo. This day was surely blessed by the Gods. She was able to even give her name! There was definitely now hope glittering in the dancing eyes of Echo.

Orestiad Echo excited thrummed her fingers against her shimmering lips as the female took the flower as offered. Beautiful, beautiful creature! If not for the obsession of Narcissus, the nymph would have loved this woman just for that loose tongue of hers.
I am pleased and lucky.
Echo would clap her hands together once and bounced again. However, she would become very still as the female reached out towards her and even touched her. It sent a shiver down her spine. How long had it been since the last to feel her flesh? Before Echo could complete the thought, she smiled and nodded.
"Nemo, yes."
Though how could the Orestiad explain that she ate twigs and moss, not eggs and bacon for breakfast?

Orestiad Echo could hear other voices sprouting around her and Nemo which just elevated the nymph's mood ever higher. Perhaps now she could speak more throughly and with more comprehensive sentences.
How about fruit salad and water?
Oh that was just so wonderful! It literally brought dazzling tears to Echo's eyes. So long it had been. So many words abound. Turning to Nemo, the Orestiad would ask,
How are you today...?
Even if her choice of verbal contact with all presence was extremely limited, Echo was genuinely curious as to the well being of her new companion.

Orestiad Echo would remain standing there still all in her naked glory, only partially covered by the flowing hair draping around her impossibly small form. If someone did not know better, they'd see nothing but a starving child.
Rain approach later time. I am the greatest when it comes to telling weather. Simple
Echo nodded firmly as if this were nothing more than truth and could not be denied whatsoever.

Orestiad Echo seemed like nothing more than a small and rather starved child as she perched upon the counter of the bar, swinging her feet back and forth, being more than careful as to not hit her naked heels on the wood. A piece of reed was protruding from her lips as the dainty creature chewed upon it, while watching those around her. They all had lovely voices, and were speaking words which would allow her to speak (though very limited). Her attention though would be torn to Maleficus, who hung from the ceiling as his tendrils stole the life from those that were too near. It was a rather frightening sight, but all the same to nymph, quite fascinating. Would he speak to her if approached or would he try to destroy her?

Orestiad Echo sat upon the counter as was her recent habit to do while studying the odd creatures. With knees crossed, and elbow perched upon this knee while she leaned forward, the nymph placed her chin to rest on her small knuckles. The naked Echo remained there smiling, pondering on who it would be today to have their ears graced with her beautiful voice.

Orestiad Echo would attempt to pull herself up onto the bar counter, but the creature's frail form denied this, and the disappointed Orestiad sunk back down onto her heels. A small sigh came from her, but unlike most when this occurred, hers was nothing more than silent. Such a frustrating thing to be cursed by the Gods; their very gift to one's creation being taken away at a whim. But this was the life of one created by the Greek God of mythology. Oh Narcissus...

Echo would then begin to wander the room, silently watching those around her and wishing to speak. Would they speak so that she could? Would they understand like the one before that she could not hold her own words and create the sounds as they could so freely? The thought made Echo hold her arms close to her as if hugging her lonesome for any amount of comfort. Being alone... was... the Orestiad had no word for it, but she knew how she felt.

Orestiad Echo would clap her hands as words filled the room, heard even over the loud release of ammunition nearby.
"Did you know...?"
The nymphs smile spread along her face, such a joyous expression holding there for now. Oh how wondrous it felt to have a voice pour forth from her lips as it did so very long ago. Hera was a cruel, cruel mistress and Zeus even more cruel for allowing it to continue.
"I should tell you such things..."
The Orestiad echoed again. Excitement was building up in her chest, and Echo wanted to do nothing more than approach these two, showing them precisely how grateful she was for them doing such a simple thing as communicating in conversation.

Orestiad Echo was having a hard time hearing the two now, as she was close but not close enough to listen over the sounds of combat, especially after the grenade had primed and discharged. A look of devastation filled her crystalline eyes as Echo saw the movements of the male's mouth but could hear nothing over the grenade device.

Though to her right, Echo could hear a single word, Tequila, and not even knowing what the substance was, she would repeat it anyway,
Tequila...!

An explosion all too near her, sent the nymph flailing to the floor where her body would be left spread out along the wood. Pain... pain along her naked back. Tears created a waterfall down her face as body trembled from the shock. If only she could cry out for help!

Orestiad Echo stirred slightly and attempted to lift herself from the floor, the motion allowing her to meet eyes with Alek Shi. Panic rose in her chest as it seemed that he wished to strike her down. It was not uncommon in the days past for someone to wish to smite her existence, for before Narcissus, many had come to Echo for comfort of an adult nature.

But as the creature fell to his knees before her and assisted her plight, Echo wept even more than from her pain. The naked nymph clung to him and his clothing, hanging to Alek Shi because her life did indeed depend on his kindness.

Orestiad Echo had her eyes closed at this point as the sounds of battle increased, all too much for sensitive ears. But a heart she could hear as clear as the booms echoing around the room, and breathing like a strong gust of wind over seas of emerald water.

When the Orestiad did open her eyes however, a large beast was stampeding towards her fragile form, panic rising again. As a bird would before taking flight, Echo crouched low and prepared to run. But as any animal would before fleeing, she took pause to see her doom coming. Yet it... vaulted over her instead?

Echo did not have time to ponder this result before she was laid out upon the floor once more, though the nymph would be dragged outside as if nothing more than a rag doll. Why could she not have been made like the great Artemis, or Aphrodite? Why did she have to be such a frail and weak creature?

Orestiad Echo remained perfectly still as is the nymph had become a statue. She did not want to die. What natural creature ever wished for death? Being alive was too beautiful to wish to cross the River Styx and Hades was an even more cruel master, but oh how he loved Persephone. Would Echo have lost her voice if Hades had taken to her as he did Persephone?

Her thoughts were interrupted by the man crashing through the portal of Gambit's, causing her to flinch and look around for that beast since she had moved. It didn't come. The Orestiad came to a crossroads. The man needed comfort, yet if she moved, that creature would come hunt her... but that poor man... if only she had aided Narcissus...

Closing her eyes, and her lips trembling, the nymph moved towards him keeping low to the harsh and false fabrication of the earth beneath her naked feet.
I think...
, she echoed from Kazen while looking upon Alek with sorrow filled eyes.

Orestiad Echo held out a hand towards Alek, fingers spread as if in a pleading gesture to him, but it didn't take but a moment for her to drop the hand. Closely she watched his actions, as spoke yet nothing came forth, rose only to fall again, and it saddened her. She knew what it was to be speechless and weak.

The nymph would go to him silently as was her burden, and take his head into her delicate and fragile hands. A small smile would be given with much effort, but it was there nonetheless. The Orestiad wanted to know that she could help him, but it would come at a price...
