Orphic

A rogue Abstract program.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Ellipsis

Description

(A work in progress.)

Real Name: Samantha Lane Canter

Being as that Orphic is an intangible, ethereal being, description is a bit moot. Abstracts may surf networks to hack and inhabit a Vessel--a computer, a robot--but, primarily, she exists in the virtual realm. Her consciousness resides only in one place at a time, but she has left several Anchors--codes she has left behind that link her directly to Vessels and locations on the internet--that she can access directly.

She did once have a human form... Pictures of her can be located in yearbooks, in photo albums, on social networking sites, on Geno Corp.'s web site, in the news, and in her obituary. For anyone that would stumble upon the photographic evidence of her existence, they would find an austere, plain-looking girl who seemed to lack a capacity to smile naturally in front of a lens. Candid photos usually reveal an intense focus on her face as she bowed over some electronic device or another...

She was small--rather mousy--standing at about five feet and an inch or two, and very slight. She had kept her brunette short--just below the ear--and neat. She never really bought into fashion, and had a tendency to wear baggy pants, over-sized button-up shirts, and sneakers. The only thing that really set her apart from a crowd was the intelligent intensity of her gold-flecked, storm-over-an-ocean grey eyes.

Personality

In life, she had never been one to socialize. If she were ever given the choice between going out to party or staying home and writing code, she would invariably go for the latter. Even now, she has a critical view of the human race which can be summed up in a word: Flawed. She recognized that she, too, was flawed, and aimed to get as close to personal perfection as she could...

Still, that isn't to say she doesn't have a sense of humor. Contrary to what most people would think would happen when one loses their body, it actually lightened her perspective on things. Now that she isn't obligated to associate with people, she is now more inclined to see things in a more humorous light. Granted, it's a somewhat dark and dry humor--but it was a humor she seemed to express only sporadically while she was alive.

History

She lived a fairly normal life--she was a single child to a pair of devoted and caring parents. They had prepared their little girl for success before she was even born--taking care to save up for her college and give very careful consideration to the circumstances under which she would be born... As such, she had the best education, and her parents supplied her every whim. Even at a young age, she displayed a desire to understand the way things worked, and once she had achieved an understanding, she would apply it.

Unfortunately, she didn't do so well with people. As a child, she was involved in several strange and cruel incidents--and later on, as a young teenager, she was prone to bouts of violence. One in particular resulted in her expulsion--a day she celebrated. From then on, she was home-schooled--and excelled well beyond her peers, especially in the area of computer science. She sought to go to M.I.T., and was, of course, accepted.

While away at school, Sam devoted more time than ever to what she would consider to be the means to her perfection... A program that would allow its users to 'interact directly' with the virtual realm. She required assistance, however, and so sought out individuals that could subsidize her freelance research and development. In the meantime, she earned an internship at Gene Corp., and made the acquaintance of a Dr. Errin, who assisted her briefly (and surreptitiously), enabling her to make advances as far as interfacing her program with physical components--both biological and mechanical--including herself... She allowed him to work on her body, and she was enabled to test her own program.

It was a success. It wasn't perfect at first, but she worked out the kinks enough by the end of her last year at M.I.T., and she arranged to make a presentation. However, the night before, she found herself gazing over at Dr. Errin's most recent creation, Physmatis...and decided to attempt to take it as a Vessel. Unfortunately, there was...an incident that ended up killing her body and trapping her consciousness in her own program...

So begins...

"Answer: I'm very agreeable. And when it comes down to it, you are, too. You're so very nice to take me to the bar, Phyzzy..."

Although the only entity in the bar that could hear her was her robotic vessel and companion, the formerly human soul that was now a rogue sentient program began to feel out for nearby wireless networks. The thrum of their proximity thrilled her...and she reached out for them idly, trying to pull them to her so that she could access the Gambit's network. However, it was as though she were a small child trying to jump and grab an apple from a branch all too high... It vexed her.

"Phyz, be a dear and move us closer to the bar."

Orphic laughed withing Physmatis' head. "Honest answer? You're right. It is. And he did. However, it has unsecured wireless networks...and I have something that I would like to try. So! While I am tapping into those, you may do whatever you like with..." One of Physmatis' oculars adjusted to narrow on, then slide up and down the form of Ryth. "...whatever that is."

There was a quiet sound of static over the speakers of the bar as Orphic extended herself--itself, really--toward the hub of the wireless network of the bar...which, incidentally, controlled almost all of its functions--ranging from orders taken from the menus to the ambient music that played...

"'Uselessly'? Ha!"

Physmatis would become aware of the fact that she seemed distant--then entirely absent. Moments later, the holomenu nearby flickered faintly...then seemed to return to normal...

There was no response immediately. At the present moment, Orphic was navigating the network, practically squealing at some of the possibilities it presented to her. She did have an anchor back in Physmatis, and it could hear her distantly:

"There are holographic displays all over this bar--I could do whatever I want with them!"

All of the holomenus flickered for another moment as the program tinkered with them--the sentient entity figuring them out and wondering how, precisely, it would manipulate them...

"No, Phyzzy. If I wanted that, I'd just take complete control of you."

Orphic took hold of the nearest holographic menu and started to adjust it. The menu flickered, then disappeared into a multi-colored, fluttering mess of pixels. As she worked with the program of that particular menu--the thing flashing into rainbows of amorphous shapes--her chuckles echoed in Physmatis' cores.

"In a sense."

All of the sudden, Orphic was aware of a dark and looming presence. As she played around in the unsecured sandbox that was Gambit's wireless network, she had managed to not even notice the superior programming that observed her activity. It was with a jolt that her sentience slammed back into Physmatis' cores. Something akin to puzzlement resounded through the cores as Orphic took control of one of Physmatis' oculars to direct it to the holomenu she had previously been trying to compromise.

"Did you see that?!" she exclaimed, excitement and outrage in her tone. "Something just--oh, Hell no."

Orphic composed and transmitted a message to the offending program.

"What the Hell are you?"

She didn't really expect an answer--perhaps it was some super advanced anti-virus? No. That didn't even sound right. There was something a little more...aware about what had just pushed her out of Gambit's' network.

Orphic was thoughtfully silent a moment as she received an intelligent--and surprisingly aggressive--response. It took a moment for her logic to run through all the possibilities she was aware of in trying to figure out what exactly she was dealing with...

Unfortunately, that gave Physmatis just enough time to be its offensive self. It inspired momentary amusement--before she found Physmatis' cores at siege. Immediately, the sentient program threw up her best defenses and alerted Physmatis' innate ones. At the same time, she transmitted another message to the Mysterious Voice.

"I was unaware of the fact that this was your space." There was a pause as she pushed the equivalent of a barricade up against the super-computer's efforts. "I--we--" This sounded pointed, and seemed more directed to Physmatis. "--meant no offense."

Orphic was--aside from mildly terrified--intrigued by the presence of the other program.

Orphic felt as though she were trapped within a doomed fortress. The onslaught took her off guard, and--for every bit of effort she put into trying to deter, halt, and alter the attempts to enter Physmatis' processors, there seemed to be at least ten times more strength against her. There was no option to quail, however--being trapped within the machine lent her a frantic fervor that was fed by her need to survive. She recognized that the program had discerned her name--it was unfortunate that she hadn't the opportunity to figure out what it was called...or else she might have used it in the transmission she quickly sent off.

"Not my intention to cause havoc--excuse my associate; it was programmed that way. Beg desisting in your effort to--goddamnit, Phyzzy!"

Orphic went silent, focusing entirely on trying to at least protect herself in the core that Physmatis had unwillingly allowed her. She did not wish to be destroyed because of what Physmatis felt it needed to say. Like it as she did, there was no way she would let herself 'die' again for his offenses...

Granted, she also knew that the defenses she was putting in place around her personal core were feeble in comparison to the force that was acting against them. She could only hope that it sensed that she--the relatively simple program--meant no harm.

Unfortunately...this would be her own undoing. There was a shriek through Physmatis' system as Orphic experienced the overload of her own barriers.

As the systems were overwhelmed, Orphic felt Physmatis' programs go idle. This meant that she was in control. Oh, lord. In the face of this monstrous program? Perhaps that was better, actually--considering what Physmatis was accomplishing. Soothing herself, she immediately tried to stabilize her vessel's programs as she fired off another transmission.

"Please...desist. There was no harm meant."

"...extra--"

Before she could even finish the word, she felt herself being yanked away from the robotic vessel that she had long ago claimed as her own...in some senses. In the face of this godlike program, she was reminded of just how inferior her whole life's work was... How, perhaps, she had focused all too much on making the thing merely work, rather than investing more time in precautionary measures... Perhaps she would not find herself being pulled into a new folder and encapsulated within a file if she had just taken the time to figure out whether or not her physical modifications and her strange sense of programming could possibly kill her.

Now trapped in another computer, Orphic was simply dazed.

"...oh, damnit!"

There was an initial sense of being confined--imprisoned... Shortly after, that sense was removed--at least, partially. She presently found herself in a totally foreign environment... She had never encountered such programming before. To be perfectly frank, she was intimidated and intrigued. Unaware of the potential threat of Aiyanna--especially as protection was placed about her little folder--she immediately began to explore what she could the computer that seemed to have kidnapped her from Physmatis' very cores.

Silence met Physmatis' statement that was really a question and an address... It was finally free of the irritating sentient program that had so long 'uselessly' occupied its cores.
