The jury were an odd bunch. Of the fifteen, eight were human and seven alien beings hailing from worlds in systems as far flung as the Andromeda galaxy trillions of lightyears away. Yolihuani Ixehuatl had battled nobly with her colleagues Geraldine Batchelder-Lockerby and Thục-Đoàn Phùng in selecting which jurors could be sufficiently impartial as well as sufficiently representative of Terra's (and Wing City in particular) xenodiversity, finally agreeing these last weeks on the group including a young refugee from a Taiyou outlying system; a distinctly out-of-place mage garbed in intricately-patterned robes from the mountains in Therrier-Paix; a Tauron laborer recently naturalized, with an interpreter accompanying him; a Murghb'qq emigré firmly resettled at a cushy teaching post at a Hafirjan university; and a stray Azrik veteran, wizened and ancient, of the Scatteran-Aschen campaigns long past. The mage, an enormously fat and pale-faced woman with long silky hair in a single loose braid, had been the prosecution's hardest fight. And though Yolihuani had fought valiantly till the bitter end of voir dire, the mage had been seated, promising she would not be biased against Elijah.

Yolihuani didn't believe it for a second.

In the past many months, her client had refused to meet with her, claiming he did not want a lawyer. Ordinarily, Yolihuani might have shrugged and turned her attention to other cases in sore need of it. But the high-profile nature of this particular case demanded she do her due diligence at every possible turn. And so, she'd had to tell her wife that yes, this trial would continue as scheduled, and Yolihuani might be keeping long, late nights for weeks or even months to come. The Terran people wanted blood. And it was Yolihuani's uneviable role to do her damndest to fight for her client's life and limb.

Prison was almost inevitable, but she could spare him death, perhaps, and might yet succeed in obtaining an acquittal on at least some of the many charges filed against him. Elijah Alexander Kenton was a mass murderer to a scale and scope even untamed Terra had rarely seen before, millions of deaths following in his destructive wake. Yolihuani's wife had texted just that morning to inform her, not without a smidge of resentment for her involuntary involvement, that another death threat had arrived at their door. This time, in the form of a severed goat head, brain matter spilling from the cracked skull, on the front porch. Well, that was an occupational hazard at this point in Yolihuani's career as a heralded public defender in Terra's judiciary.

And now, the first day of opening arguments (and perhaps a final opportunity for pretrial motions) was set to begin.

Yolihuani had appeared before Judge Acheampong before. The last three times, she'd prevailed; the four before that, her clients had been convicted. These prosecutors, though, Yolihuani barely knew. The European woman was known as an old-school hardliner, the Southeast Asian woman a dogged pursuer of righteous justice with an occasional instinct for uncommon mercy. They'd both worked on the investigation into Terra's intelligence director for war crimes. But Yolihuani had yet to go against either in court, and had to instead rely on Jamshed's sideyed observation in the office that Geraldine was a bitch and Thục-Đoàn a maverick.

"You best watch your back in there," he'd said that morning. "They're out for Kenton's blood, sure. But in the meantime, they'll probably settle for yours."

And that was when Yolihuani saw Judge Magister Marlene McGregor. This turn of events could not bode well for a timely trial.

The side doors of the court would open as a figure without his trademark red robe and mask stepped inside led by a troop of armed Terran Security. You could have heard a pin drop as he spoke loudly, "Oh my, I do sure attract a lot such love and praise." all control in the court shattered as the outrage of Terran citizens reached intolerably high levels. All while he grinned basking in their hatred, "Oh yes, weep, cry call me every name in the book. I DID ALL OF YOU WORTHLESS INGRATES A FAVOUR. MAGIC CAN'T BE TRUSTED!"

One person had managed to get out of their seat and push through the crowd guarding him before spitting right in his face.

He gave a look of distaste before using his sleeve to wipe the saliva off.

Although the said person was not done, "MY WHOLE FAMILY IS DEAD BECAUSE OF YOU. HE'S GUILTY WE ALL KNOW IT, EXECUTE HIM NOW!" she screamed tears in her eyes, the security did look on sympathetic evidently hating to be guarding this man.

Elijah merely continued marching up the courtroom, "I would mock you but you are brainwashed fools who should be pitied. CALL IT A CULLING, A NECESSARY ACTION! MAGIC AND PEOPLE WHO WIELD IT CAN'T BE TRUSTED." one of Security 'accidentally' kneed him in the groin causing him to groan, the others said nothing. "Fools, this trial is theatre and I am your actor, welcome to the show!"

He would bow, the noise was growing with his continued comments before the judge had enough and magically projected their voice as they yelled, "Order in this courtroom! Order! Counsel, please remind your client that this is a court of law, and decorum WILL be observed. It is a privilege for your client to be here, and if he persists in this behaviour, I will order him removed."

Just ahead Jinhai occasionally walked up to a dismembered corpse face down to stare then move on. They examined periodically as Jurgen moved about then one walked up with a bottom half from nearby. The armor blown in half like the body still in it a red pool appearing as the black robe placed it down on the ground face up. Leathery gloves pressed the two halves together with a noisy slurch of organs and intestines. It examined, turned, then left. Wet noise continued with every step closer of the two men like one had wet boots if not for the problem that it didn't stop when they did. The vox echoed to Cain from nearby going off in the man's head like it were maximum possible volume which was what woke him back up.

The top half of the split man pressed itself up by one arm to respond, "Nearby, sir. Will convene as soon as possibAAAGH!"

Communication stopped ending the echo of a scream that didn't as the top half forcibly torqued as if the man's intestines had yanked him the right way 'round. Otto long since got used to it though given how much punishment he could take and not go unconscious. Couldn't sleep either and didn't seem to need to. The pain had long since began to fade quickly given how fast he put himself together. The corporal looked at the oncoming footsteps as his face tensed to attempt a salute. It didn't work so well and with a suppressed scream collapsed back to the pavement. The armor around his midsection creaked and expanded as his clothes and skin re-knit over the top of a restored spine. In one cut you could still see his liver growing back

Otto struggled to maintain composure as his legs started moving, "Hng.... Cpl. Otto Hannig, Sir. When the robes rekindle some of us pop out perpetuals. I'll be... HNNNG... with you as soon as my tendons are back, Sir. The Emperor protects."

Astonished he mutters idly, "Though it seems a chaos sorcerer melting my armor and skin off is less a mission problem than artillery-class munitions."

Head away he yelled, "Shotgun, heel!"

It took less effort than thinking at its part of his mind given the pain. A metal snake crawled out of the wreckage nearby then with a squeal of ferroplasm plates moved to reorganize into a heavy autoshotgun. The sheer size of it something one would normally issue to space marines.

Well...If one thing that could be said as his time serving the Imperium...It would be that he can see some crazy shit in his journey. Cpl. Otto Hannig, a perpetual being by Imperial standards. Blown up, dismembered, ripped apart, burned...If they die they just come back up...However unlike an actual perpetual, his revival is a lot more...messy...

Good thing he has seen more than enough of his fair share of carnage and horrors to not be that sick at watching a corpse re-assemble itself like a morbid puzzle. ”Welcome back Cpl. Otto. Good to know we have another Guardsman accompanying us.” Ciaphas Cain greeted the now revived Guardsman as he turned to Jurgen.

”Sir, that is weird.” Jurgen commented astute Commissar sighed in reply. ”It is, But we need everyone we can gather. One more gun to repel any attacker will better increase our odds at surviving this...Besides, we seen far more strange things out there.” Cain replied as he awaited the finishing touches of the regenerating Guardsman.

Of course, it would be noted he was carrying a weapon that looked like the recoil would break his arms.

Otto rolled to one side, face grimacing, as he mustered the will to get his disobedient feet back underneath him. There were some crackling noises as joints pulled back into place and cartilage had the flexibility to regrow. After a moment the popping stopped and Otto opened his eyes. The metal of his armor slowly shined itself and the Imperial eagle surfaced. Otto saluted as the last of his waistline armor closed the gulf of damage shining boot-heels clicking together.

Formalities aside otto reached down for the handle of his shotgun and picked it up knee out wide to heft the weight. Turned side to side he inspected his weapon for damage turned back to Cain. The weapon looked serviceable and he could feel it looking around in his head so the guard-side wetware they installed was running. He imagined a mechanicus getting angry when trying to figure out where the machine spirit was in the gun and finding it a reallocated bit of Otto's brain directly running the gun and no metal MIU. Damned robed psyker critters.

Otto nodded at Cain, "I'll put up with weird if it means I can take the Emperor's will head-on and only have to shoulder the pain, Sir. If I go down with too many holes just bring my head with you or cap me and bring my gun. The Emperor's worm reconvenes me on you full gear wherever that is in under two hours. Let me check ammo."

He looked down to the left, "Servitor, ammo supplies."
Otto's left eye glowed slightly as he heard a monotone voice internally, "800 round pluripotential, 30 amputator, 30 Flechette..."
"What? 800 rounds since when?", interrupting the inner voice Otto's face rose an eyebrow in the one sided conversation.
"Fed directly from cognizance crystal supplies. Ammo manifold updated with Gunnac minifactorum pattern. Otto's arm can fill mundane ammo clips.", came the answer though he had feeling it was bits of his own head interpreting the odd scrap at the end.

He turned back to Cain the huge metal weapon barely stressing his relaxed grip, "It did a blueprint upgrade while I was out but I don't think Techmarine Gunnac is in the city at the moment. Tac data you'll need to know - I got enough samples for it to have the basic mechanicus ammo and all the shotgun variants I could get my hands on. Have about 800 shotty round potential. Rifle is probably four to one exchange and proper Bolter rounds probably one to two. My mag has all the shotgun manifolds 30 racked and intact. I have to dump to potential then reconfigure for a few hours to fire the other stuff then reload each potential manifold I'm using in it. Don't have to dump if I'm just making ammo. Two minutes to do a 30 clip reload from potential, one to run out on full auto. What ammo type do you want me to use, sir? I can switch to the stun shell manifold if we're not making enemies."

“Stun shell? Well, it’s a bit late for the non-lethal option. People are already out to kill us, after our failed attempt for a coup we are now the enemies to Wing City. If anyone shoots at us, shoot to kill.” The Commisar replied as he gave his order. At this point, it would be better to eliminate any enemies then stun them so they can kill them later.

”Of course, that’s if we encounter any enemies. We will be taking the underground passageways we created. Not many people know about them, so we can avoid a majority of enemy forces. A safe route with not much danger.” Jurgen added.

Otto lets go of the grip to salute and the weapon creaks to clank firm to his torso, "Sir, Yes Sir! Slugs then. If they found their way in the Jinhai have been repairing everything down below and shrapnel's a ricochet risk with whatever rockcrete they're using. I heard they have their own Artisian down there somewhere making weapons but no Mechanicus to make ours."

As the armored cestus of his uniform reached back for the shotgun grip it bent away from his armor. He held it point down wobbling slightly at the midsection as he took place to the side and rear of the two men. Otto just eyed the gun and tried to make it change ammo types by thinking at it but couldn't get the MIU to go. He wasn't one of the crazy psykers and it probably needed that.

"Shotgun. Slug rounds,", said the Corporal as a the clacking of shells exiting a magazine commenced.

Wherever they drained to others with a less hollow sound clacked back in.

Ciaphas Cain located, engage and capture... the orders ran through the Artifical mind of the Primus class AI, the robot hung in low orbit, using his jump jets to alter his movements every other second. he 'reawakened' and shifted his weight around to look down to, wing city below.

The HUD that made up the Vision of the AI activated and the marker of Ciaphas Cain's position lit up. the patrolling 'mech' body of the AI would fly past, its compartment opened up to snatch Alpha inside, before hitting flaps and twisting downwards, to engage.

hitting hypersonic in a matter of seconds. the benefit of having artificial pilots just gotta build the craft to withstand the Gs, not the pilot's gear. To those at the eastern gate, as Cain declared the order to move out the craft would be pulling up and bursting past, leaving the sound barrier to explode and echo through city streets as it reentered supersonic speeds, providing air support.

no more than twenty feet ahead of the trio Alpha would land, having disengaged some few seconds to the craft pulling up between the buildings.

"Ciaphas Cain, for crimes committed against Wing city and Terra you will pay for your crimes, surrender now, and you'll be given a trial, resist" he drew the mass accelerator rifle and powered up his shields, leveling the rifle at the trio. Awaiting their response, two barrels would extend from his back the small devices tiny mortars that fire a shell that explodes with an electrical charge that renders humans unconscious. for now, those two devices were hidden by the robot's body.

Otto was loyal and had his orders but hoped they wouldn't be found already as he just got up again. Last thing he needed was getting blown in half by some AI. He could feel the robes watching as the ship sailed ahead of them. As it landed and raised weapons he felt all their chatter in the Almanac stop with the voice of the AI threatening humans. The twelve-many behind them with a transport held above its head quietly put it down on the sidewalk by the clank of metal on stone he heard.

His eyes were in the same direction as dozens of spark eyes looking past them and he had a feeling they didn't know for sure if the robot worked for humankind or not. Possibly something they could use if firing started until it said something that intimated what race the AI worked for. Damned neutral Dicta allowing humans to kill each other unless Cain asked. It was just that the part of his brain the gun lived in culled the words from his mind that let him tell Cain he had to ask. Hm. Too close to the dicta or not enough authority? Great, the inquisition ought to have fun putting holes in him for that one. Mission just had to go forward.

"Silica Animus, Sir! We need an exit!", Otto had his orders moving about in front notifying of hostile target and the Emperor would protect their future.

As the trio marches, the sudden appearance of a ship boomed into view, causing the Commissars greatcoat to flap with the wind. A machine soon left the ship and landed at least twenty feet in front of them and ordered them to surrender. ”Commissar sir, Hostile machine in front.” Jurgen states the obvious as he un-holstered his lasgun and aimed it at the machine.

Commissar Ciaphas Cain only nodded in reply as he knew his options, what would a jury to to a supposed war criminal? It was obvious, life in prison or executed as a war criminal. It was obvious what he had to do, his chance at freedom and living was much higher with one option. And that was fight, just like usual.

”Find Cover!” Cain ordered as he dove behind a piece of flaming wreckage as he gave his order. Jurgen followed suite as he ran to the nearest piece of cover while opening fire against the machine, sending streaks of red at the machine. While behind cover, Cain produced his trusty las-pistol and added to the retaliating fire against the robot.

”Keep your heads down, and watch out for enemy reinforcements! Bring that machine down! My men are counting on me to get to the evacuation point to lead them!” He gave his usual inspiring speeches as he kept his head down in case of return fire.

"you made this choice" Allowing them to bolt for cover, Alpha just watched Jurgen as he was the first to open fire, the las bolts striking the shields to no avail, only charging them as the energy is absorbed. Alpha raised the Mass accelerator and fired through the wreckage, a burst of three adamantium spikes 4inches in length each, punching cleanly through the cover. aimed to incapacitate Jurgen.

if hit the three rounds would hit Jurgen while he was still airborne from his jump into cover, the first two would hit upper torso, ripping the flak armour to pieces and ripping through the body, the third round a headshot, resulting in a meat salad effect of the head, bones reduced to dust from kinetic forces and flesh reduced to liquid.

Besides the obvious lethality of the rifles, each time it fired a sonic boom would emit from the barrel, as the mach 6 spikes (hypersonic) exited and hit the standard atmosphere. this design decision to disorientate any biological enemies who got close to the robots, within 30ft that is.

a Defensive action Alpha would be to activate the secondary function of one of his two shield generators and activate a hard light shield bubble. awaiting the response of his foes.

Trained reflexes saw the rifle panning right toward the Cain and Jurgen and instinct threw him high along the shattered rubble if just slower than the start of raining rounds. Protect the commissar and his second. A grimaced face pans into scope view as three shots rapport with little travel time. The first round for Jurgen's torso pounded into Otto's leg instead collapsing the armor inward hauling him to be nailed to concrete the body of sterner stuff holding against the pressure wake but by way of a wave of gore and collapsing bone. The second to Jurgen's head found Otto's left chest first as metal and bone cry out by way of a crater of blood. The third sucks Otto's blood in his wake as the impact of otto spiked to stone rocks the heavy debris on its resting point the last continuing through debris rocking by Otto's crimson impact.

The man's face went slack for a moment as a hypersonic pressure wave rocked his body and brain. Then the eyes shot back to focus in spite of half his rib cage ruined into paste. A right arm hefted his shotgun against the ruined shoulder the other well ruined and barely anchored readied the trigger.

Otto spoke with a rakish gurgle pumping blood rather than air from one lung the other had enough air for a quote he'd begun to understand, "Pain is temporary, Honor is forever!"

The arm on ruined shoulder still tensed a trigger just fine as the heavy shotgun shot a squirt of blood up with a deeply hollow rapport. Each thunderous sabot of the silvery 5 gauge jackjammer pounding at his nearly destroyed shoulder to fire heavy slugs at rifle speeds. His aim suffered and his will quaked but still held gunsights on the AI.

Jurgen found his life saved by Otto as he moved him out of the way and took the spikes in his place. Otto himself, the regenerating Guardsman He was was not down for the count, returning fire with his shotgun. "Commisar Sir! Our cover is not going to hold against that rifle! And the machine has something sort of shield around it! My rounds did not even impact the thing!” He called out as he was now wise to stay in cover, and stay on the move. Cain doing the same and keeping his head down.

What he would not give to have some heavy weapons...If that’s what that machine was packing, their las-weaponry might as well have been toothpicks. Heir only chance was with Jurgen’s Meta-gun but they would be shot behind their cover before they have a chance. Thing we’re looking real bad here...However, the city was now alive with Imperial Guard on the move en masse. The commissars Order was revived by possibly millions of remaining Imperial Troops in hiding.

From nearby buildings overlooking their position, Imperial Guard heavy weapon teams began to set up heavy bolters as they were loaded up. “Commissar Ciaphas Cain is in trouble men! This is 13’th Company! I repeat any avaliable squads in the area requesting backup at section W-C-3. All avaliable forces willing to lend a hand I’m open for the idea!” A seargent opened up Vox communications as two Heavy Bolter gunners began to open fire at the machine, raining rocket propelled, uranium tipped, bolt rounds more powerful than the standard 1.0 caliber bolt shell at the enemy location.

More squads responded to the emergency hail, spotters began to radio in the enemy position to mortar teams as they raided explosive death at his location. Guardsman alongside experienced Storm Troopers suddenly flocked near the Commissars side as they poured in both las-Gun fire and hot shot las-gun fire at the enemy. “Sir! The situation is now under control! All units The Commissar is secure at the moment, we are moving to evacuate point. Watch the skies and keep an ear out for additional Hostile s approaching the area!” A Imperial Seargent ordered as the tables had turned rather quickly.

His Order saved his skin for the time being, and with the massive amount of firepower raining down Cain began to make his escape while Imperial heavy gunners and Imperial soldiers began to keep him covered, some even forming a human wall around him to keep him safe from an unlucky shot. Jurgen quickly followed suite after arming himself with his Melta-gun.

The Imperial Guard remnants are now back, and their main priority is to get their commanding officer and themselves out of Wing City.

" these fools" the hard light bubble shield withstood the hail of bolter fire, the mass-reactive shells blowing up against the hard-light barrier, mortar shells would end up much the same, but Alpha understood that enough of a storm of firepower would begin to crack and damage it, this is when the heavy shotgun otto and its slugs fired, the first few ricocheting off but one pierced and cracked the hard-light.

the slug trapped in the bubble. Alpha's response had to be swift, but for now, he had trapped himself so the enemy wasted their firepower. his vision lit up as targeting matrixes kicked to life and he began individually targeting everyone who was firing at him this taking no more than a second at most.

the sound returned of the hypersonic craft no more than a few moments later, from the underside of its fuselage a cascade of micro-missiles fifty in the count with more for secondary and tertiary flybys, the first swarm of missiles would impact against the heavy weapons teams, spotters and the mortars, reducing the weapons to slag in the blast also.

the guard would see this devastation as a result of melta weaponry attacks. however the flyby wasn't done with the missile swarm it had dropped a large Tesla array that stuck into the ground too close for comfort for Cain and his storm troopers. shields lighting up around it as it began charging.

Otto tensed and stared at Elijah the man seemed nearly a slave for the forces of the immaterium if he didn't know better. Likely would be soon once they got wind of him if the man went to prison somewhere instead of the death sentence the Imperium would hand him. In any case he'd certainly respect the native court even if not Imperial. He held a hand down and shook his head hearing the telltale scuffing of Jinhai edging through the duct. Not eager for death they were certainly always ready for it. Eternal servitors allied first to the Emperor then to humankind with nothing in between. They scuffed back inside and the faint noise stopped.

Otto's full auto barrage continued as one slug finally stuck in the shield trigger still held down. The next round moved into position as a craft covered the space to the target zone in an instant. Missiles streaked down from above as Otto tried to dodge and found himself quite stapled to the thick hunks of scrap and stone. Though trying for a moment to move found his armor quite stuck. The missle streaked down leaving a trail behind it so the Otto planned ahead, tossing his shotgun at a hole in the rubble with a clang and scurry of plasteel the weapon partly converted shooting out from underneath Jurgen. Immolation came quickly as a missle rammed into the thick rubble though the energy strangely dampened though more than enough to melt Otto entirely.

In distant planespace a receptacle began gathering psimass.
