Rushing down the hallways of Astrius Academy, Petra had a bundle of books in her hands as well as her staff strapped to her back and rattling with each running step she took. She had overslept, not gotten a chance to eat, and was now super worried about being late to class! Well, a class. She wasn't entirely sure which class she was meant to be in at this very moment. Whatever the case, the words Recovery sounded about right to her so she had bolted in that direction.

It was not even minutes later after she had taken off that she arrived at the door, panting and nearly collapsing over her books while stepping inside. "I'm...I'm...I made it. Oh, oh thank the gods..." She let out a sigh of relief, slumping into a random seat and setting the books on the table in front of her. Little did it occur to her the time, she wasn't even close to being late. She had just panicked and assumed.

Such is her life.

Those deserving on knowledge. But how does one qualify? What determines who has the right to prosper in a place as chaotic as the Academy? In the past, battle were fought between siblings and friends alike continuously. Magedom was brutal and merciless. The weak were fodder for those with power, who inevitably would be discarded by the craft itself. If one failed to preform beyond expectations, their rights as a mage would be short-lived.

Nowadays, being on time for class usually did the trick. And being early? Well, Lilian couldn't help but feel content at the sight of Ruby being far too early. It was a change of pace that was welcomed, though the mage wouldn't dare disturb the girl's scribbles. Instead she kept to herself as the classroom slowly started to fill up with students of different shapes and sizes. Rabbling ensued, where the previous quietness of the classroom turned into a plethora of conversations. Along with a rather fussed up looking student running in without a shred of decency. Lilian stood up, simply staring into the crowd of kids before eventually people took note, the rumbling simmering down into a mumbling before Lilian spoke up.

"Quiet, please. Class is about to start. My name is Lilian Valentine and I will be this year's Recovery teacher. I have close to forty years of experience in the field and I've dedicated the last decade to further studying the manipulation of magical energies in humans. I'll be on Academy grounds every Monday to Wednesday and you can generally find me either in this classroom or in the teacher's lounge. Now, to start off class, has any of you ever passed out or had any other significant side effects after casting any kind of magic?"

Ruby found her attention drawn towards the new arrival, and, cold and emotionless as she might look initially, she couldn't help but stifle a gentle chuckle at the sight, given plenty of time remained before the start of class. She could sympathize a little, at least.

As the former silence of the room steadily drowned out with the flood of students making their way in, she let out a simple sigh, opting to close her book and slip it away into her black shoulder bag for the time being, now with her attention drifting towards the window again, awaiting for the teacher to address the class and such.

However, even after Lilian started speaking, Ruby still remained in a world of her own. Musing, letting her mind hop from subject to subject, always with that of her father included in the mix.

...Wait, did she just hear "forty years"? From someone who looked to be in their twenties? Her eyes and blank, thoughtful expression fixated on this peculiar teacher and those tools of her's. How curious.

In response to the question posed to the class, nothing interesting really came to mind, as she had yet to work with much beyond basic spell casting. Perhaps she'd simply let the others give their answers and fade into the background without notice. ...Like usual.

Frazzled and otherwise in a state of distress for the first portion of her seating in class, Petra began organizing things as well as checking her books. Surely she had...wait! In her satchel, she found an energy bar. Good enough for now...she'd unwrap it, eat it within moments, and throw away the wrapper. Just in time to start class! Can't say she was eating during, hah! But, once she sat back down and the class had begun, a rather perplexing question was asked to the class as a whole, yet she felt very personally towards this question. Namely since her magical journey had only just begun.

Raising her hand rather high with a wide grin, she tried to contain herself for the moment, but ended up letting her reasoning slip just as soon as her hand went up. "I once used one of my healing spells, and...I transferred so much life into the person, I think I had drained myself of using my magic for like - the whole day I was so tired! Even making little non-essential sparks fly was difficult, let alone simple magic tricks!...Ma'am." She ended off saying this, realizing how incredibly rude that had just been, yet she just couldn't contain herself. Once she had settled back into her seat, she buried her head into her desk. Why did everything she do turn into a disaster, even without her trying?!

Lilian just kind of stared at Pertra's little turmoil. Wow, what a mess. Hopping from excitement, to shock and finally regret. In truth, the teacher wasn't even that bothered by how rude her actions were. Her little story was the perfect bridge onto the subject and part of her felt blessed to have a moron of this caliber in her class. She crossed her arms, clearing her throat and laying a stern look onto the airhead.

"This is a perfect example," Lilian paused, another sigh escaping her lips, "... of how not to use magic. I'm sure you're all aware of the varying opinions on the inner workings of magic, right? I mean, as students soon enough you'll be writing literature studies about existing magic theories. I'd recommend considering doing it about the Magic Circuit theory by El-Melloi or perhaps the Soul Theorem by Hohenheim. That latter one is particularly viscous. " Ah, famous authors in the magic world... though she was getting off topic. Such is the way of the teacher.

"Anyway, the general consensus is that one's physical body and their magical abilities are linked. It explains why after casting a spell one might feel fatigued, or why a mage with the flu might under perform..." The woman trailed off, needing a moment to tie her rather loose story back into a solid argument. Come on, you studied like twenty years of magic theory, you can tell some students a cool story. "Ahem. Most beginner magic users consider this but a mere, temporary drawback. However, research has shown that over-exertion of one's own mana can lead to dangerous situations and even permanent damage to your magical aptitude. In short, if you do not take the proper care and precautions over your body, magic included, you'll have a severe risk of damaging your potential and well-being."

With that all out of the way, Lilian stepped forward to address Petra once more. The poor, zealously good-willed girl. She had only seen this girl for about ten minutes and already Lilian felt like the academic environment of Astrius would simply crush this fragile little flower. Ah, perhaps if she got into a nice enough study ground... perhaps if she were determined...

"In your eyes, you might've pushed yourself to your limits in an attempt to heroically help the people around you. Yet reckless usage of your powers will only lead to a cycle of self-destruction. And then, in the end, a goodhearted girl like yourself might even lose the ability to save anyone at all."

Healing with style... that's something Ruby could respect, as silly as Petra's story sounded. Still, even someone with her own lack of experience could see the issues with that. What an eccentric girl, aiming to impress at her own expence...

Ruby's attention stuck to Lilian as she spoke, practically making fun of the poor girl at first, which incited another soft bit of amused chuckling. However, she found herself sinking into the depth of the teacher's words, the woman's experience clearly showing.

Ruby dwelled on the thought that healing someone else would need to drain one's own energy. Similar to the theory of equivalence, that matter can't be created or destroyed. Same with mana, or magical energy, she thought. She wondered how, then, that potions even worked. How did they heal others if there's no other to gain the energy from? She knew the ingredients to make one, but the details seemed to elude her now more than ever.

She also thought back to that "forty years" figure, simply making the assumption that magic played a role in Lilian's startlingly young appearance, though now she couldn't help but wonder how, as well as the intricacies involved with extending one's lifespan in such a way. Something she's never actually explored herself, and felt curious of how that related to her own interests.

She might have questions later for this woman.

For the time being, she settled for staying silent, yet her eagerness to speak up showed clearly, especially after she half-raised her hand, followed by the girl simply hiding away behind folded arms. It seemed like a stupid question.

Sinking further and further down into her seat, Petra's cheeks flared a bright red in embarrassment, almost feeling like she was now becoming the center of mockery here in the class. Her first day and this is how she ends up. Typical! Still, she kept a mental note of everything the teacher was saying. Expenditure of her own inner spirit of sorts could lead to permanent physical damage...or something like that. It made perfect...ly no sense to her, yet she still nodded at every word with the occasional "Uh-huh" accompanying it.

There was a moment of silence while she listened to what the teacher said, then her mind began to lead Petra astray. It was about the lecture just now, but it was still enough to keep her preoccupied. What if, right...what if she drew upon everyone else's magical energy rather than her own for the purposes of expenditure! It was, admittedly, a genius idea to come to the likes of her. The problem was, she had no way of knowing how to implement such a thing. Still her cheeks returned to their natural color and she began to sit up more, nodding to herself slowly. Muttering under her breath.

"Alright...! I'm going to learn how to heal people a whole lot without hurting myself!"

Giggling lightly to herself, she folded her hands upon her desk and swung her legs to and fro. Half-listening to the teacher now. The only thought on her mind now was surpassing everyone else around her, students and teachers!

Attentiveness was one of many skills a practiced mage would acquire. The indecisiveness of the quiet girl in the corner hardly went by unnoticed, where despite Lilian's seeming ignorance towards the little change of thought, she was more than aware of Ruby's little crisis. Hah, the ditsy girl said something naive again. Healing without hurting oneself... A far more conflicting question might arise from that. One that, truthfully, Lilian had found an answer to.

"I suppose that's one way to put it. Properly managing your own energy will come a long way when it comes to preventing overexertion. Though there's many ways to reduce the stress caused by healing another person, the most obvious ones are usually ignored by students and adults alike. Right now, you're all very young and healthy and your bodies are capable of many things. You might decide to stay up all night drinking and go to school on a few hours of sleep, or maybe you'll eat nothing but junk food all day. Although participating in bad habits might not seem, well, bad, treating your body poorly does not reflect well on your ability to use magic. Most theories of magic support this idea, whether magic is utilizing magic is another body part, your life force or something arbitrary you gain while resting, a proper sleeping schedule and a healthy diet will be your first step towards healing people without hurting yourself. Furthermore-"

At that moment the door to the classroom open, a young purple haired girl entering while her eyes were glued to a phone screen. From the moment she made her appearance it wouldn't be difficult to tell her and Lilian were related. Perhaps even sisters, or so, one could muse. Though despite similarities in looks, the casually clad girl was quickly halted when she attempted to seat herself at a desk.

"Rosemary, please get out of my classroom."

The girl froze completely, seemingly in disbelief of what her mother had said. "Excuse me?" How dare she not only try to send out Rosemary, but simultaneously use her name so the whole class knows Rose is her relative? It was disgusting. This was one-hundred percent NOT how you pull off a successful mother-daughter student-teacher relation. The fact her mom was just unable to cut her slack on both fronts made her want to give up completely. In fact, her mom was probably just bluffing anyway. Trying to act all tough in front of all her fellow students to scare them into-

"You are excused. Now please leave." Rosemary turned around, started walking and soon after the sound of a door being shut was the sole reminder of Rosemary's brief existence. Mom could win for today. Rosemary was gonna get something from the vending machine instead if her mom wanted to be all sassy. With that out of the way Lilian's eyes were set on Ruby, arms crossed and an non-amused expression hanging on her face. Truth be told, Lilian was not looking like the most inviting person right now, basically radiating 'no-bullshit' with every bit of body language she had. For a moment one could wonder if she was straight up going to send Ruby out of the room as well.

"You had question, no?"

Admittedly, Ruby felt a little envious of Petra and how the girl as scatterbrained as they seemed could speak up when she wanted, but at the very least, she opted to responsibly take notes on the professor's lecture instead. However, most of Lilian's words were rather... straight-forward, even to someone who didn't know much about magic. It made plenty of sense that one would need to be in top condition, right? She figured that casting while hungry, lacking sleep, or on a bad diet could lead to unwarranted side effects. Ruby wondered, what kind of side effects? Though... maybe that's best left a mystery.

Her attention then turned to the door as another student made her way in. Rather late, at that. Her ruby-colored eyes looked back and forth between this new girl and the teacher. Relatives? Siblings, perhaps? Rather, she'd almost forgotten about Lilian's supposed true age, so... mother and daughter? Given their somewhat amusing interaction, her latter assumption started to make more sense, and she felt a little bad for Rosemary having been simply shut out like this. Though, given the standards of the academy, she understood Lilian's actions, as a simple matter of fact. Ruby sighed, remembering that common sense didn't seem all that... common.

With a train of thought having gone a little too far, suddenly being addressed just about made the snowy-haired introvert jump out of her seat. "A-ah! I just... I-I was-" Ruby was never good at collecting the words she needed on demand. Her plan to erase her presence may as well have failed the moment she indecisively lifted up her hand, only to lower it back down again. Brilliant.

...No way out of this, then. Plus, she may as well take the chance she's given. The girl let out a soft breath to calm her nerves a bit, then she finally stood to her feet, speaking out in a gentle, effeminate tone. "...I was mostly wondering... since I'm primarily interested in alchemy and potion brewing... how it is that healing potions work? If... if healing requires energy from another being... from where, is the potion gaining that energy?"
