Railynn Neyamateth

An outcast wood elf with a knack for training dragons...

Description

Image

She may have been born with the natural grace and fluidity of her kind, but that doesn't mean that Rai chooses to use her talents in the ways her dear mother and father would have liked. They wanted their noble daughter to grow up like a lady, the image of beauty that her clan exuded.

She preferred to romp with the boys, getting dirty, getting in trouble, and getting away with most of it.

Content to be considered the oddball, Rai has taken up a hobby of training dragons. Her unique (and currently un-publicized talent) of communicating telepathically with the creatures allows her to do this. She's looking for an adventure, for friends, for someone who won't judge her on appearance alone.

So begins...

High above the village that sat peacefully in the clearing below, there was a high-pitched, drawn out whistle. A young dragon, roughly the size of a horse, was careening in a dangerous spiral, his wings flapping haphazardly as he dove within a dangerous proximity to the archers. His dark green scales made it easy for him to blend with the tree-tops, but due to his bad aim and clumsy flight patterns, it wouldn't be hard for him to be spotted or targetted.

Far behind the creature, a young elf was running as fast as her legs could carry her, mouth pulled wide in a grimace that bared nearly all of her teeth.

Must...move...faster....

The dragon had doubled back, flying low over the village again in time to receive the arrow in his exposed abdomen. With a sharp, whistled cry of pain, he flew a bit more frantically, gaining height and speed...up until the moment the poison began to take effect.

As he began to fall to the ground, Railynn finally caught up with him, watching in horror as he crashed to the ground, rolling several times before coming to a stop at the base of a large tree.

"Thylius!" she cried, vaulting a fallen log effortlessly before skidding to her knees at the side of the creature. She saw the arrow, her brow furrowing almost angrily as she reached for it and yanked it out from between the creature's scales. She tossed it away, going to the animal's head and pulling it into her lap.

"You foolish, foolish creature." she murmured, watching his belly rise and fall with his breaths. Someone nearby had shot him with a tranquilizer.

The moment she heard the trio come from the bushes, she was on her feet, turning to face them, with one hand resting on the hilt of a stiletto knife she had sheathed at her side. Her wide, emerald green eyes swiftly went from one elf to the next, recognizing her kin, and relaxed only slightly.

"I'm fine." she replied. "Thank you. Um," Glancing back to the dragon, her brow furrowed in concern as she bent over its head and calmly smoothed her palm over his brow. "You didn't kill him did you? I'm sorry if he made a nuisance of himself. He's still very young. I haven't had enough time with him just yet..."

Her eyes were wide as she turned back to the other three, seeming unphased by the arrow that was pointed at her. "He didn't hurt anyone did he?"

The relief was plain on her face. She looked between the three, her gaze resting on Arthion as her soft eyes attempted to see through his stony facade. "He is." she answered. "I've been trying, but he...he's a little belligerent. Independent. He's given me a lot of trouble."

Sighing, she rose to her feet again. "Do you know how long it'll last?" she asked softly. "I can't leave him here."

Railynn took a slow, deep breath, and let it out through her nose. "The offer is kind," she replied with a slight nod. "But only so long as I wouldn't be considered a burden. I really am sorry for his behavior." she put a hand to her head, pushing her hair back away from her forehead before allowing her hands to fall to her side.

"How long has the village been here?" she asked as they walked. "It's not one I'm familiar with, and I spend a lot of my time out in the woods..."

Rai watched Megildur, her impassive, calm expression turning to one of concern and silent apology when he mentioned the condition of the tent's previous owner. She was not a supersitious creature, so inhabiting the tent would not be an issue for her.

"There isn't any need to apologize." she replied with a slight smile. It's good to be cautious. I appreciate your hospitality, and I'll be sure to thank him as well." She looked back through the trees, her brow furrowed slightly. She wasn't accustomed to being in the company of other elves. She'd been thrown out of her own clan for her odd habits.

Since then, well, she'd been content to operate on her own.

Rai watched the men tousling curiously, a small smile pulling at the corners of her mouth. Taking in a deep breath, she allowed herself to relax a little, content to relax by the opening of her tent for the moment so she could take a few minutes to sharpen her knives.

She leaned against the support pole, removing a smoothed stone from her back pocket, and beginning to draw the blade of her stiletto across the surface of the stone. Every now and then she looked towards the wrestling adolescents, pleased that everyone wasn't stopping and staring.

It was a nice change.

Rai looked up in surprise, standing as the other two approached her. She was not tall and willow-like, as many of her sisters were, so she had to look up at the pair as they approached, unable to disguise her amusement at their antics.

"Good to know I have such faithful fellows to rely upon should my own talents fail me." she replied, placing her hands on her hips. "Do you often make a case of rolling around in the mud, or is this a special occasion?"

She looked from one brother to the other, her green eyes warm with a sort of sisterly fondness.

She smiled, taking a step back to maintain a safe distance. "So, training. What is it that you're training for?" she asked, stepping around them and walking to the riverbank. "No wars or rumors of wars. Are you simply operating to be on the safe side?" she asked, turning to look over her shoulder.

She laughed, gesturing at them in a dismissive manner before turning to pick up her knife. With a light sigh, she moved away from the pair, glancing around the village, towards the archer's field, and made her way over to the archers who were practicing.

Every moment she expected them to give her a strange glance. It never happened though.

It was a relief.

She kept her distance as she walked around the archery pair, her eyes studying the sturdiness of Arthion's shoulders, the discipline with which he held himself. She smiled in appreciation, watching quietly as he released the arrow, and let the little one have it back.

"What do you use to fashion the weapons?" she asked, taking that moment to approach. Her voice was quiet, so as not to distract the younger elf.

She kept her expression carefully neutral. "Well, yes, I was thinking more along the lines of which kind of wood..." she clarified. So stoic. So...

...boring.

Turning her eyes away from him, she watched the younger one pull back on the arrow again. She lifted her chin a little in an encouraging gesture, and on that try, the young elf hit the target.

She smiled.

"It grows fragile in winter seasons." she replied casually, bending to grab up one of the spare bows and testing the strength of the twine. "Brittle. Evergreen would be something more suitable if you're interested in having a weapon that lasts a good long while." She smiled, pulling back on the twine in an archer's pose, her sights on the target.

"I knew a man who melted down shed dragon scales and used that to reinforce his bows. I've never seen arrows fly so far." Glancing sideways at him, she asked,

"Do you do much traveling?"

She watched him for a long moment, her brow knitting together. "I take it you don't care too much for their kind." she said softly.

She had not met any humans, though, she felt as though her own clan had been far more hostile than any other group of people she'd met. That story, however, was not for this place, or for these people. It was a blessing in and of itself that they did not mock her for her ways with dragons.

She watched his reaction curiously, aware that this probably wasn't the safest topic to broach with a near-stranger. "I'm Railynn." she said quietly, inclining her head to him. "I'm sorry if I upset you earlier. When my dragon wakes up, I'll be sure to stay away from this place. I can see that it means quite a bit to you."

And she'd return to living on her own, as she had for several years yet.

She couldn't help but smile in return.

"It's good to see that someone of my talent can be appreciated in foreign places." she said with an idle shrug. "My own kin do not feel the same way, but I understand that not everyone values things the same way." She swallowed, reaching to scratch at the back of her head. "Do you see much of dragons around here? I know they like to keep to the mountainous regions, but sometimes I see younglings nesting in the forests too."

All of this formality made her slightly uncomfortable. Not that she was unequipped for it, certainly, she just preferred casual talk, the company of trees, the sound of a dragon's heartbeat. Arthion seemed kind, and it was good to see him smile, but still...

This would take some getting used to.

"When they want to be." Railynn replied with a slight laugh. "In my experience, you get the good with the bad. But when you can train the bad to obey commands, they tend to be the most adaptive, the best fliers." she sighed almost wistfully. "It's been a little while since I've flown, but it's a rather beautiful experience." She met his eyes, lifting one brow.

"I can take you, some time, if you wish."

"I won't keep you." she reassured him, her voice quiet, gentle as if for the simple purpose of having respect for the evening. "Goodnight, Arthion. Sleep well." She gave him a slight wave, smiling just a little before turning and walking away from the archery range. Instead of going to her tent, however, she trailed away from it, out to the woods where her dragon had fallen.

Darkness did not frighten her. It was welcoming. As she came upon the sight where her dragon had fallen, she settled down next to him, absorbing the comforting warmth from his scales. How many nights had she slept this way, in the company of dragons rather than the company of some other? A man perhaps?

What man would want a girl who preferred the company of dragons?

Sighing to herself, she let her eyes drift closed, hoping sleep came quickly this evening.

It took her only a short period of time to fall to sleep, and when she woke up next, it was still very dark. She couldn’t tell just what time it was.

But she knew that she wasn’t alone.

The dragon rumbled in his sleep, masking her ability to hear other noises. She could sense them nearby, wherever they were, and she knew there was more than one of them. Slowly, she withdrew a knife, holding it close to her chest as she shifted to her feet and began to rise.

Something fell on top of her, a thick, knotted, heavy net that had her falling right back to her knees. She cried out, frantically attempting to saw at the ropes with her knife, but unable to do so fast enough. Something, or someone, began to drag her towards the shadows, away from the dragon, and in the process she ended up losing the knife.

“Eliowyn!” she cried again before hands reached to cover her mouth.
