Rei Harkov

I've got a bad feeling about this...but a job's a job.

Description

Image

Full Legal Name: Reina Isolde Kurosawa Harkov
Aliases: Rei Harkov, Kurage
Occupation: Whatever pays the bills the best at the moment
Age: unknown
Height: 5'11"
Weight: 135 lbs
Eye Color: Blue/Green; unnatural, pale, chatoyant
Hair Color: Blue and Black
Build: Athletic
Race: Human (assumed)
Sex: Female

Preferring to dress in cargo pants, boots, t-shirts and a flight jacket. Function over form is what is most important to her.
Despite these ideals of dress, Rei wears fairly heavy makeup, which conceals a great deal and in some way alters her facial features. It is hard to determine just what the woman beneath the makeup actually looks like, and she goes to a great deal of trouble to keep it that way.

Piercings/Tatoos/markings
Scars - Faint scaring across knuckles from childhood; scar on right lower leg from incident while in military service
Tattoos - Left shoulder (sakura blossom in red ink w/ three graces in black ink surrounding it); left wrist (tribal, blue ink), coms bracelet covers it
Piercings - Right ear: Standard lobe, orbital, helix, and upper lobe
Left ear: Industrial, snug and orbital
Eye brow piercing over right eye.

Personality
Rei is mostly calm, cool and fairly collected. She can though lean towards the disturbed and unstable side of things. She knows who exactly her friends and enemies are; preferring to keep the latter closer in a multitude of perverse and demented ways. She is not afraid to double cross, back stab or do any manner of nasty things to close a deal, or prevent it from going sour. Her talents in negotiation were learned the hard way; out in the field.

Equipment
Isher Mk 3-5 Plasma Pistol
VanVogt Force Blade tucked into the right boot
Coms bracelet, manufacture unknown
Earpiece designed to feed direct images from mini-cameras jettisoned outside a ship and allows the user to communicate directly with a ship's AI without the use of a neural web.

The Ship
Rei's ship, Ghost Dance, is an usual specimen in of the fact that few of these ships, called lighthuggers, have been seen since the Great War of Magellan.

Sitting at 4 km long, the ship is capable of carrying vast amounts of cargo in it's holds and can allow for even greater numbers of passengers if need be. With it's Lockheed-Krunchev engines for propulsion, the ship is capable of extremely powerful bursts of acceleration (at least 10g without any inertial suppression systems) and at cruising between systems pulls 1g on average.
Thought to possess limited repair and redesign capability, these ships are generally coated with a thick layer of ice to use in defense against other ships and minor impacts from objects. However, despite this most of these ships are capable of moving machinery and rooms around within their hulls should their owner desire it, and possess a on-board manufacturing plant for repairs etc.

Weapons
Ghost Dance has relatively small point defense weapons, but they still pack quite a punch.
These weapons are able to blast a 200 km crater into a planet, disrupt weather, and potentially initiate geological events.

The A.I.
Specter is an alpha-level simulation and responsible for assisting Rei with running most of such a large ship. There is a large amount of controversy surrounding the Alpha-Levels, as they were once humans whose minds were scanned and then digitized; these individuals did not survive the process. They are fully self aware, and fully capable of remembering, learning and adapting.

Other Technology
Manufacturies for creating anything from weapons to furnishing rooms on ship.
Inertial Suppression
Cryo-Arithmetic Engines/Dark Drives - allows a ships engines and heat to decay through quantum mechanics and use of a miniature event horizon to make them indistinguishable from background space and temperatures and radiation
Camouflage Screens - stealth technology that further conceals the lighthugger from detection
Hyper Diamond hull - an material of extreme durability made of nanofiber tubules interwoven

History
Rei's largely divorced from baseline humanity, her background is a little murky if at all clear. She's thought to be the daughter of a Taiyou citizen, and a Russish generational ship passenger from a vessel that was originally launched from the Sol system; but she's neither confirmed nor denied these facts. What is known is that she speaks decent enough Taiyou that the local Yakuza have a desire to deal with her when anything out world or in system calls. Her dealings are thought to be fairly small time and innocent enough, an she has little desire to run into trouble with the local law; but has had a few close calls. Possessing excellent piloting, martial arts, and marksmanship skills, she appears to have even perhaps come from a military background. All this once again goes back to the fact that her past is murky, and not even the closest of her friends know the true story of who Rei Harkov is. As a well kept enigma, she is perfectly content to let people wonder.

So begins...

Rei Harkov nodded slightly, at least she looked human. Although when the contacts weren't in, the bright blue green eyes were a little disconcerting for most people the first time. "Someone must have had fun then, dreaming up their little monster." She remarked offhandedly. Maybe she was being impolite, or rude again, but it didn't matter. Coffee for her was usually good enough.

Rei Harkov looked at Rain strangely for a moment as he said this, "Learn not to broadcast yourself, these rather explicit thoughts are.. annoying." She said off handedly as she peered into the bag. Rei had admitted one more thing about herself, but that was for Rain to figure out. "As for liking me, right now I'm hungover, tired, and annoyed with most everything. I'll be better company another time most likely." She had a bitter, almost bleak outlook on life and things in general. Why Rei wasn't about to say.

Rei Harkov shook her head as she left the room for a small bedroom off to the left. "You probably weren't designed with it in mind.." She muttered under her breath. She was starting to find Rain and his elitism annoying, he seemed to think that he knew everything, when in truth he had no idea who or rather what she was. Rei wasn't about to enlighten him either. Some secrets were best kept to oneself.
Locking the door of the bedroom behind her, she took a deep breath and let it out. "Fucking pompous child..." She groused as she headed for the small bathroom off the bedroom. Here she would remove the wig, the makeup and the contacts. The woman underneath was fairly unremarkable beneath the mess of makeup and other things. With pale blonde hair, and slightly sharp features; she was what she would call herself plain, but perhaps to others very attractive.

Rei Harkov knew better than to probe behind the mental guards, at least not as out of practice as she was. But she could catch fleeting glimpses; a feeling, or a slight thought here and there. As she lay down to sleep, she briefly wondered if there might be a way out of this. She had let down her guard just enough for him to begin to feel comfortable, and she would leave it at such a tenuous spot.

Just because her guard was up did not prevent the horrible dreams from plaguing her sleep, night terrors she would call them. It was all she could do to not wake up screaming, half mad from the visions she had seen. 'No idea where these come from... or why...' She thought as she lay awake in the early dawn hours, drenched in sweat from the latest, most frightening experience. Pushing hair from her face, Rei looked at the ceiling hoping to fall back asleep for at least another hour.

Rei Harkov cleared her throat and quickly locked down any extraneous emotions and feelings. She had to remind herself that they were gone, and she was awake an sound. "I'm fine." She replied, a utter and complete bold faced lie. Leaving the bed, she headed for the bathroom. A shower and change of clothing, and she would be doing better. It was at this point, she realized there were just some things she couldn't mask and while asleep it wasn't terribly possible. 'Get a hold of yourself, if you actually practiced and took yourself serious.. you might stand some chance against things..' Rei chided herself mentally. For now, she would concentrate on getting herself set straight.

Rei Harkov didn't think Rain would believe her but she said little else when she appeared at the breakfast table. The wig and the makeup were back in place, and she'd dressed in much the same as the day before; a white tank and a semi clean pair of jeans. Looking at the food on the table, she instead passed on it too tired and disturbed from the night before to even think of food. "It's yours." She mumbled as she rummaged in the fridge looking for something, not finding anything she instead settled for a glass of water and then dug in the cabinets for a moment. Producing a lighter, and pack of cigarettes, Rei promptly lit one; allowing the smoke to drift about the apartment.

"I wasn't asking." Rei remarked putting out her cigarette and heading towards the door. Even after some amount of sleep, she was still bitter, cold, and acerbic. There would be no chance of her telling him anything else unless it was utterly and viably important. Grabbing a beat up old flight jacket, Rei opened the door and stepped out into the day.

Rei Harkov simply gave Rain a single finger salute as she walked out of the complex. She could take care of herself, and would be more than happy to get away from this man for a time. "Killed.. that'd be a lovely vacation.." Rei muttered to herself as she walked to clear her head. The morning was cool, and slightly damp; all the better after a night in a stuffy bedroom.
To say that this wasn't something of a cold war between two psionics was a enormous understatement. Rei could sense, and to a extent feel what Rain was doing in her apartment. She couldn't say that she approved, but understood that to stay locked down tight could result in a loss of control. "Maybe thats what it was.." Rei mumbled thoughtfully.

Rei Harkov there were many things about her capabilities that she did not understand, nor really cared to explore with this man breathing down her neck. For now, she contented herself with sitting in a small park, pondering what would be the best move to get away from this self proclaimed "protector". Maybe she should have just fought it out, instead of allowing him to worm his way into things. Frowning, she let exhaled deeply. This was such a complicated situation. "To just... vanish would peg too many sensors.." She mumbled mulling over what few options she had at that moment.

Rei Harkov had already contemplated running, and knew that Rain would have a extremely difficult time finding her. All she had to do was resume her actual identity. Leave all of this mess behind would be nice, but she would just be assuming another mess on her return. "Too bloody complicated!" She groaned to no one in particular. But for as long as she could, she would stay away from the apartment. She'd been smart enough to bring her flexi screen with her, away from what she feared were prying eyes. "What to do about that.. brat..." She mumbled thoughtfully.

There wasn't much to the apartment, sparsely furnished, and with little other than clothing in the drawers. With Rain no longer breathing over her shoulder, she could at least check on a few things. First order of business would be to run a quick background search piggy backed across numerous governmental databases across the known systems. How this was done via such a small computer wasn't readily told, but somewhere there were multiple relays that allowed for a quick and efficient search. "Hm." Rei mumbled. She could have always asked the Others, or found out herself via their knowledge banks; but this would release entirely too much energy.

Rei Harkov smirked and knew she could turn the tables. The bounties were more than enough to pay for ship repairs and then some. "Hunter being hunted.. I kind of like that." She mumbled slipping the flexi back into her jacket pocket. She just had to perhaps wait long enough so half the city wouldn't get leveled if it came to a fight. "Bloody little liar.. your running just the same. Except I won't be as cavalier about it as you.." She said to herself as she walked back to the apartment.

Rei Harkov immediately withdrew her own cognizant abilities as soon as she came up against Rain's. This would most certainly be a challenge. Entering the apartment again, she took out another cigarette and took a seat in a nearby chair. "What're you going to do with that rifle Mr. Rain?" She questioned absentmindedly. She could freeze the firing mechanisms, even will them the melt in place if she so desired, but didn't. For now all he knew was her inability to work any sort of psionic force. Rei was content with that.

Rei Harkov said little as she took another drag on her cigarette. It was all a ruse between the both of them, Rei knew that he knew something. The extent of that something was left to be known. "A likely story." She commented flicking ashes off onto the floor. She didn't care, she'd be out of the apartment in a month and on to somewhere else. The landlord was just grateful to get some business.

Rei Harkov had for now managed to avoid her self proclaimed captor. "Screw the bounties...if he really wants to finish things he can come bloody well find me." She commented to herself taking a seat. The last 48 hours had been... difficult to say the least. Lack of sleep, combined with the forced evasion of this bounty hunter's curiosity. "Psionics my ass..." She muttered. Rei had allowed herself to slip up, and it wouldn't happen again. She couldn't afford to get in more trouble, unless absolutely necessary.

Glancing around the bar, the patrons that filled it today were of the rather dull sort. But, the pirates on the other hand were rather interesting. "What makes you think me and the rest of these drunks have money?" Rei asked Drake Stern and his goons.

Rei Harkov hadn't even managed to order a drink before trouble started. "Oh this pistol?" She asked pulling the pistol from it's holster and pointing it directly at Drake Stern. "Empresses.. heads of state.. sure. Doesn't mean the patrons today have money." Rei commented releasing the safety with an audible click. "I'll shoot you soon as you open your sorry, pretty boy mouth. I'm sure this guy.." She added nodding over towards Takeo will do the same.

She had spotted the Aschen, and didn't exactly have time to wonder who they might be or from where. "So.. I dare you to try and take this pistol from me if you want it so bad."

Rei Harkov rolled her eyes at Takeo's remarks. "Oh just shut up will you?" She commented moving her point of aim towards the soldier. "You lot make lovely target practice do you know that?" She added firing off a few bolts of plasma. In her opinion he was just another obnoxious Taiyou, or at least he looked like one.

Turning her attention back to the Aschen, she scowled. "Yeah good luck with that old man." She commented. Noting the buckshot, she quickly ducked out of the way vacating her spot at the bar. Now would not be the time to pull out any sort of trump card. But, a force blade hidden in her boot might be useful. With drawing it, she allowed the monofilament blade to stabilize and commanded the device to keep itself at a short length.

Rei Harkov scowled as her shots missed. "Fine.. no more playing fair." She mumbled quickly dropping any self imposed limitations and restrictions. It didn't take a genius to figure out what was going on as she quickly redirected the bolt of plasma to hit Takeo square in the center of his back. Most devices designed to pick up any sort of energy signature might possibly peg, but she didn't care.

"I would suggest you abandon this honor quest Dan'na, or else your warrant has been signed on both planes of existence."

Rei Harkov looked at the chinese for a moment as if deciding something. "Yeah... no." She said and turned her direction of fire towards the chinese soldiers and their group. "Lesson number one in Gambits, never, ever, ever break up a fight. Especially if those who are fighting have the better weapons." Rei commented holstering her pistol and quickly hiding the force blade behind her back.
