Rhea Theramyr

A former police detective turned private investigator; she is thrilled by the challenge a new case presents.

0 · 293 views · located in Wing City Gardens (South)

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by SleepyShadow

Description

Physical Description - Rhea is a tall and trim woman in her mid twenties with brown skin, dark hair, and dark eyes. She typically wears a white button down shirt, black slacks, black boots, a red trench coat, and a red fedora.

Image

Personality - She is a calm and collected woman, though at times she can come across as arrogant or cold. She does not mean to sound that way, but she cannot always hide her condescension for people who bother her about menial problems. Only truly interesting cases warrant her full attention or so she believes. She is prone to bouts of melancholy when bored, and she will often visit her former partner from the police force, Morgan Holder, when she feels such boredom setting in.

Abilities - Rhea is a crack shot with her revolver, an expert at defensive hand-to-hand combat, and a skilled piano player. However, it is her intellect that is her most formidable weapon. She is highly knowledgeable on a wide array of subjects, she has uncanny observational awareness, and is keen at reading body language.

Equipment
Colt Single Action Army.
Lighter.
Cigarette pack.
Twenty-four spare rounds for her revolver.

Wing City. Rhea had been told that it was a strange place, but distance from home and rumors from employers did not matter. The only thing that mattered was the truth. A heavy rain began to fall as her taxi pulled up to the curb just outside of the aeroplane landing zone. It was like all the angels in heaven had decided to piss on the city.

Rhea stepped out of the taxi. No bribe would convince the driver to go further into town. Rhea donned her hat and pulled the collar of her coat up as she stepped out into the rain.

"What a night," she said to herself.

Rhea Theramyr saw a fellow leaving the aeroport far slower than most other folk. The young woman put two fingers between her lips and whistled sharply at the man. She made sure to make eye contact with him to make her intention clear.

The rainwater dripped down the front of Rhea's fedora as she approached the fellow now that she had gotten his attention. She stopped about two feet from him as she looked him over and drank in every detail. After a brief moment, she spoke, her question almost sounding more of a statement.

"You local?"

"You seem pretty nervous, friend," Rhea said. "I hope I didn't startle you. I'm looking for a place called Gambit's Bar. Been told it closed up recently. You know where that is?"

She reached into the pockets of her trench coat and procured a half-empty pack of cigarettes and a bronze lighter. She pulled out a smoke, pressed it between her lips, and then held the packet out toward the man.

"The reason why it's closed is my business there," she replied before lighting her cigarette. "My name is Rhea Theramyr. I'm a private detective. Tell me, friend, does the rain make you nervous?"

"It must not rain often in Wing City," Rhea commented casually. "Otherwise you would have an umbrella in that satchel of yours."

She stowed her cigarette pack back in her coat pocket, then took a long drag from her smoke. She sighed contentedly before she continued.

"Those original manuscripts of yours must not be of anything important. You wouldn't be standing in a downpour chatting with me like this if they were. Right, Cody?"

"Yes, actually," the young woman replied. "I'm new in town and could use some directions. If it wouldn't be too much trouble, could you show me around a bit? We can stop by your place to drop off your books if you like. I wouldn't want to inconvenience you."

Rhea Theramyr arched a cynical eyebrow and drew another long puff from her cigarette. "You'd be so unwelcoming as to leave a lady shivering in the cold rain outside your door? Listen, the only thing in your apartment I want to touch is a hot cup of coffee. No books, I promise."

"It's 'Miss', I assure you," she replied. "Don't worry, I can handle any danger. I've got my revolver."

Once inside the apartment, Rhea looked the place over with a critical eye for a long moment. She stood very silent and very still as her eyes wandered over the room. At length she pulled the expended cigarette from her lips and opened the door, flicking the butt outside.

"Never mind on the coffee, Cody," Rhea said. "You know where a diner is? I'll buy some dinner for us."

Rhea Theramyr fished another cigarette out of her coat pocket and proceeded to light up. She idly thumbed the bronze lighter for a few seconds before stowing it away once more. She glanced up at Cody, one eye concealed by her bangs and her hat.

"Let's just say that you're a much bigger fan of reading than I am," she replied at length. "Besides, I'm feeling a bit hungry. I haven't had anything to eat since I caught the automatic carriage here."

Rhea Theramyr stepped out of the cab, paid her fair, and pulled the collar of her jacket up. Rain water dripped down from the brim of her fedora, and she grumbled irritably to herself. The archivist had told her that there was a diner in this neighborhood, but all she saw was a run-down food stand that put far too much mustard on their dogs.

"What's a girl got to do to get some coffee around here?" she said to herself.

The woman pulled a half-empty pack of cigarettes and a bronze lighter out of her trench coat pockets and lit up a smoke. It helped settle her nerves, but it did little to slake her thirst or hunger.

Rhea arched a single eyebrow at the man and smiled. She did not think she was loud enough to be heard over the rain. She shrugged and approached the stranger as she stowed away her lighter and cigarette pack.

"Sounds like the station coffee back where I'm from, then," she replied. "I don't expect much out of the brew, but I do prefer a roof over my head when I'm trying to have dinner. I'm Rhea Theramyr."

She held out her hand for him to shake.

Rhea Theramyr nodded at his suggestion and took a long drag from her cigarette. Her old partner had told her that smoking would kill her one day, but Rhea was not too optimistic about the life expectancy of anyone in her profession.

"Sounds fine to me," she said. "I just got to the town a couple of hours ago, so I don't really know my way around here. Lead the way, McLoughlan."

Rhea Theramyr did not mind his hand on her back. She felt reasonably comfortable around him, and despite her experiences with them of late she still wanted to have faith in police officers.

"Most recently from New Sierra," she replied, "though I lived in Los Caidos much longer. I'm a private detective, McLoughlan, and by the looks of things you're on the force here. I have to ask something, though. Aren't those pistols a bit small?"

"You wouldn't mention not being up to anything immoral if you didn't think I was already suspicious," Rhea said with a wry smile. "I don't know much about the police in Wing City other than their implied incompetency. If something isn't pertinent to what I'm doing at the time, I tend to tune it out."

It dawned on her what he had meant by the size of his pistols, and she smiled as she pulled out her revolver to show to him. She held it flat in her palms for him to see.

"I just thought you would have had something larger than my Single Action Army," she said.

Rhea Theramyr nodded in thanks when her companion held the door open for her, making sure to quickly tuck her revolver back into her belt before she entered the diner. She held up two fingers at the waitress and took a seat at the counter.

"I like little places like this," she said to Carson. "Something about little diners reminds you of home, no?"

"Coffee, and ... oh, two Eggy-in-a-Baskets please," Rhea said to the waitress before snuffing out her cigarette into an ashtray.

"I'm surprised you're ordering dinner," Rhea said as she turned back to Carson. "I saw you eat two hotdogs just twenty minutes ago. You must be very hungry tonight."

"I got a couple of jobs out here, though it looks like only one is going to pan out," she replied. "Apparently the local police already have the murder in the bar worked out for the most part. I'm going to guess that they've settled on a scapegoat, but since they aren't willing to cooperate I can't really infer more than that. The second case I got out here is an old missing persons."

Rhea sipped her coffee gingerly. It was strong and bitter. It reminded her of the New Sierra commissioner.

"I don't think it needs quite that much sugar, Mr. McLoughlan," she commented.

"I can't say I believe that," Rhea replied to Carson's last statement, though her eyes were fixed on what the waitress was doing. "A big city like this will always have murders. We may have an attempted homicide here in the diner soon. Where did you go for vacation?"

Rhea was not well versed in conversational etiquette.

There was no time to be concerned with Carson or Angel. Rhea dove behind the diner counter to get some cover from the gunmen. She didn't know if their firearms would be powerful enough to rip through the barrier, but it was better than being completely exposed. She pulled her revolver from her belt and gripped it steadily. This was not her first gunfight, and she was determined to make sure it would not be her last.

She took a deep breath, popped her head and gun over the counter, and fired at the nearest attacker's chest.

"Do you know what I just killed your friend with?" she called out calmly from behind her cover. "This is a Colt Single Action Army revolver, the most powerful handgun in the world. Six shots; more than enough to kill anything that moves."

She just needed him to move, to make a sound. She knew her gun would rip through any sort of cover that was not solid steel. She wanted him to present a better target. After all, Rhea knew how to play the psych game, too.

Rhea Theramyr took her shot. She knew that the man's head was a smaller target than his chest, but she was at close range and there was no wind inside the diner. Her hand was steady, and her target was a low-life crook.

Her aim was sure.

Rhea Theramyr looked around desperately for a telephone and sprinted to the one on the wall. She dialed 911 and explained the situation as best as she could. Once done, she hung up and approached Carson and Angel as she reloaded her revolver.

"I know first-aid," she said with a wan smile, knowing that such help would be of little use.
