Ro Retna

Special Agent Retna, SIB.

0 · 695 views · located in The Infinite Void

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Cloasse

Description

Image

Name: Romanae Retna

Nicknames: Ro, Rory

Race: Human

Birthday: 23 August

Age: 34

Gender: Female

Height: Five feet six inches

Weight: 124 lbs

Eye Colour: Dark gray

Hair Colour: Dark titian (ginger)

Distinguishing Marks: The majority of Romanae's body is scarred. She has light white marks running diagonally down her left cheek, and she has a scar trailing from the left corner of her mouth to the middle of her cheek. Her torso, arms and thighs are especially scarred.

Other Features: Romanae's accent is a deeper Scottish lilt and is considered rougher than the average female voice.

History: Previously a Captain in the British Army, Ro now works for Wing City Police Department's SIB as a Special Agent. The SIB (Special Investigations Branch) deals with crime involving/against those in the Armed Forces and Military Police Arms. With a team of four men and herself as leading officer making five, the small but functional team worked well together until a new face was introduced.

Five months previously, another officer had left the team in order to be transferred across seas as a liaison officer. Now that there is a new probationary officer involved, it isn't quite so certain that Ro's team will gel as well as the last one did.

So begins...

Ro Retna shrugged her shoulders. "I suppose not... but sweetening whisky makes you look like such a blouse." Laughing at people? Fun stuff. Very, very fun stuff.

"Hmm... You wouldn't be wrong there," Romanae agreed slowly. "But as for the whole 'what it actually involved being irrelevant' thing, well... You sure it's irrelevant if the 'fantasy' lasts all of five seconds and ends with the phrase 'it happens to every guy at some point?' I think that's pretty relevant. Unless you're okay with your masculinity being questioned. I can see why you'd be okay with that."

The cherry on the insulting cake was the still-hot coffee she had in her hand. Nothing like bitter coffee to put a smile on your face, after all, even if that smile is a little more smug smirk than giggling grin.

"Who says I made it up?" Romanae queried as she turned to follow his progress. "I mean, just look at you. You're probably a good few years younger than I am... so you've less experience, and probably only with slutty girls who don't know what an orgasm is. I'm pretty sure my logic is sound."

Amusing, at the very least.

"Here I thought you were going to come out with a badge and try to woo me with that." Her voice took on an almost disappointed tinge. "It would've been funny to see - oh, for the love of fucking Christ. Tell me you're not one of those freaks who turns up here with bits of paper covered in pictures they've nicked off Facebook and says that they're a bloody assassin. Please. Tell me that you're not."

One near-blonde eyebrow raised as she took in the contents of the list. "Wow, your boss must be really good at opening public records and finding out who works in which office," she noted with grey amusement. "You do know that we all work in the same office, right? 'Tracking down' people who work in offices day-in-day-out is really easy. Like... you just walk in and get a visitor's badge."

She paused to sip at her coffee, giving herself a few short seconds to decide how in the hell she was meant to handle this. After that whole debacle with Edan... Mordecai would have to find out. At the very least because he wouldn't want his forensic pathologist to be hassled by random men on the street again.

"So you know my name," the Special Agent stated eventually. "And you know where I work. You also know that I think you'd last about twenty seconds in bed and be about as useful as a chocolate teapot. So what's your point?"

"All I asked was what your point was... but admittedly I do think that you'd be better served going and talking the Director into letting you into his offices tomorrow on official capacity than just stumbling on in and demanding to see him. 'Cai's a busy man. And there's no way in hell that you're going to get into our MTAC facility if he happens to be in a conference call. So, you know. Just putting it out there."

Besides, if he did indeed turn up tomorrow whilst she happened to be on her shift and tried to imply some form of recognition between them, she was totally going to play the 'I've never seen this nutjob before in my life' card. Maybe it'd distract Tom and Benji long enough to stop bickering.

"No, but really. Why do you need to be in our offices? And I think I'll just stick with calling you a blouse. Ryde sounds like a daft name... Crappy spy movie much?"

Romanae waved her hand with irritation at the phone. "Pretty sure that it's illegal to take a photo of someone without their prior permission," she groused - the agent didn't really care (obviously he had had a photo of her already), but it was the whole pretence of this odd affair. Something wasn't sitting right with her, and she was going to find out exactly what it was.

"I'm telling you now that there's no way in hell that you're getting into our MTAC. Especially if you don't know what MTAC stands for. We have probationary agents, who've been working with us for months, who aren't even allowed in. I highly, highly doubt that my boss is going to let you just waltz on in."

Ro Retna snorts with derisive amusement. "Now just what kind of bullshit are you trying to pull, hm? I'm telling you now, you're not going to get into MTAC. You're not going to start an investigation. You know why? Probably not, and I'm not going to explain it to you, because clearly you're some form of idiot who has escaped from the mental asylum he calls home. There are ways and means of controlling who gets into that room, and having a signed piece of paper is not one of them."

Mordecai was going to be so pissed off when she told him. She'd have to phone once the apparent nutcase decided to up sticks and leave - or when she decided she'd finished her coffee. Romanae idly checked the time on her mobile phone. He'd probably still be at his desk.

Smirking, she turns her attention back to Ryde. "You'd probably make things a lot easier if you just told me the truth instead of inventing shit to try and scare me into thinkin' I'm gonna lose my job or have my home invaded. I'd like to meet an agent brave enough to go snooping in my house without my permission. People lose fingers that way."

And she didn't even have to touch them. Crepa hated people going into her room.

"You believe what you want, mate... but I've worked for the SIB for quite a number of years and I know the higher-ups rather well. One of them since I was just a little baby soldier myself. I can tell you now that none of the people I work for are going to be pleased with some outsider barging in and demanding to see our offices, our MTAC or any of our pathology and forensics labs. I'd also warn you to stay away from our non-agent staff, but I think you're too stubborn to listen to me. I'll let you deal with the repercussions."

She'd keep Edan away if the guy even tried to head down onto the lab floor. She knew not to physically assault people when they did something stupid, but if Edan even though that Iante or Daniel were being harassed in the slightest...

Well, it wouldn't be the first time. She sighed, shaking her head and draining the last of her coffee from the cheap polysterene cup she held. "I'm just warning you - and don't take it as a threat or anything. Maybe friendly advice to not be a complete tosser..."

"Look, it doesn't matter whether or not I believe whatever shite you try to feed me - you do understand that, right? In the food chain at the SIB, it goes lab techs, probationary agents, field agents, senior field agents, team leaders, and then you've got the Director of the SIB right at the top. And unless you can have some very important person turn up at Tavi's office with a fucking dossier full of signed paper that says you're who you say you are and that you're not here to steal information from us or our sister branches, you're going to be removed from the building by several very irritated agents armed to the teeth."

They'd been betrayed once before by someone with ties to their branch. Romanae shook her head at the thought of even allowing some outside the opportunity to try and do the same.

"But turn up tomorrow. I'm on-shift. My entire team is on-shit. My team leader and Director Tavi will be more than happy to grill you for proof. Maybe they'll show you the interrogation rooms as a courtesy gesture."

"I get a nice, fat paycheck anyway. They pay well for unsociable hours and dangerous encounters with criminals, you know." It was the only way she could afford to have Crepa looked after half the time she wasn't home, though with Edan planning on moving in sometime soon, hopefully her money worries would alleviate slightly. "But sure, go ahead. Continue on with the poor come-on lines," the agent grinned. "Because so far, you're doing a really poor job. I can't see you getting yourself in my bra at all."

"Five seconds fantasizing over how badly you'd fail to entertain me - at least, sexually," Ro quipped, thoroughly amused now that decided to overlook the whole 'I'm planning to appear in your office tomorrow' lark. "Go ahead. Convince me to take you home to my bed, eh?"

God, she hoped he made an effort and she could lead him to Edan's apartment instead. Edan would find that hilarious. And then she could spend the night with him, instead.

"I don't just invite people into my house. My younger -" by minutes -"sister lives with me. I have to be careful..."

Romanae was staring at Stanton as if Crepa had just appeared beside him and announced that he'd got her pregnant. "What the fuck kind of bullshit excuse is that? You can say that I wouldn't be able to convince you all you like, but... I'm pretty sure I wouldn't even try. I've better men to be wasting my time on, don't you think so?"

The Special Agent smirked and raised her empty cup. "Cheers!"

"That sounds like a healthy relationship." The sarcasm should have been very, very thick in the Scots' voice. "I mean, really. Sounds so healthy." She'd never slept with any of the people who wanted to kill her - Romanae liked to think she had a lot more sense than that.

"But yeah, you're kind of putting me off sleeping with you, and there wasn't much interest to put off in the first place. You're not doing yourself any favours!"

"You would probably get up, ask me to dance, let your hands drop slightly lower than I'm comfortable with and find out exactly why it's sometimes advantageous to wear a cup all of the time..." Romanae hummed thoughtfully. "But then that's also assuming that I'd say yes. Not a big dancer. Why waste time vertical when we could be dancing horizontally instead?"

That smirk was back. Romanae checked her mobile phone once more. Was there time to phone Edan to pick her up before he went to sleep? She couldn't be arsed walking now.

"Did you hear that?"

"Hear what, Tommy?"

"That guy!" The two agents were sat opposite one another at a table deep into the warmth of the bar. They'd been on-shift near-constantly trying to solve the case of the sold child, but the man responsible had been terribly unforthcoming when it came to handing out information. All that they knew was that he had sold the child to another man. "At the bar," Tommy Davids hissed to his redhead companion. "He just said he bought his baby!"

"I think you've had too much coffee, Davids," Romanae muttered, taking the cup away from the younger man. "You've been on-shift too long."

"I'm telling you - watch this." Tommy then stood up (quite a feat considering the lack of sleep he'd had the past few days) and meandered towards Killian and the barman. "Hey! Excuse me! Nice baby."

"What the bloody hell are you doing, Davids? Nice baby? Dear God."

"Oh, he's... cool," Tommy said awkwardly. "Hey, uh, Ro, come look at this baby. It's... cool, you know?"

"I'm sorry," Romanae apologised, frowning at Tommy before she turned a wan smile on Killian. "We're with the SIB and we're currently investigating a case involving an infant."

"Did you say something about saving the child?" Tommy asked, brows raised. "I could've sworn you said something like that."

Tommy and Romanae shared a look. "Sir, we're going to have to ask that you come to our office with us," Romanae said softly; he still had the child in his arms, after all. Upsetting him would not be wise. "The child we're looking for was sold by his biological father. He was not the lawful guardian of the child, and his mother is still looking for him."

"Sir, did you pay for him?" Davids asked, placing a hand into his pocket for his mobile phone. "And could you identify the man who gave you the child? Do you recall what he looks like?"

"I understand, sir," Tommy insisted, managing an almost grateful smile before he turned away to make a phone call.

"I'm going to have to ask you to give me the child, sir. Could you please tell me your name and pass me the baby? Don't worry," Ro added, noting the way that Killian looked at the infant, "I've got a child of my own; I know how to hold him properly."

"Edan! We think we've got the child; he matches the description and the photograph, so far as we can tell, but Romanae's going to have a proper look at him in a second. We're going to take the baby to the office along with the man we found him with, okay?"

"I'm sure that, at the time, Mister Doyle, paying for the child seemed like the best way to deal with the situation," Romanae stated quietly as she carefully arranged the child in her arms. "But I'm afraid that I have to advise that you at least contact a lawyer until the District Attorney tells me you won't be charged. Please understand that I'm not arresting you. It is illegal to purchase children, but considering the circumstances, I'm giving you the benefit of the doubt and assuming that you did this for the child's welfare."

Tommy, meanwhile, had finished his conversation with Edan and gestured ahead of himself, towards the door. "Come along, Mister Doyle. Our offices are right up the street. The child's mother is coming in to retrieve her son - assuming, of course, that this is him. Considering your story, however, it seems incredibly likely that this child is the one we're looking for."

Romanae remained silent, focussed more on the baby as she checked gently for injuries or discomfort whilst they walked out the door. Tommy, however, was quite happy to chatter away to Killian, determined as he was to get this case over and done with - and a chatty witness was almost always a useful one.

"I'm sure that she'll want to thank you, never mind listen to you apologising to her," the younger agent smiled. "And I can understand why you did it. I've met the guy who sold the kid - bit of a work, so he was. Traipsed right back into the mother's house afterwards, wanting to get his beer, stumbling drunk. Then he assaulted one of our lab techs during interrogation after he tried to get the mother to let him off the hook. Hah! Honestly, some people these days. 'Magine selling a baby..."

True to Tom's word, the offices were indeed only a few minutes walk from Gambit's, and the aged receptionist waved them through after cooing at the baby for a few short moments. Killian was directed into an empty room that, though not quite as uncomfortable as an interrogation room, wasn't exactly a lush sitting room. A few plastic chairs were available, and Romanae nodded towards one of them. "I'm gonna give the kid back to you just until I can get one of our medics up here to check him over, okay?"

"Edan says the mother's waiting, Ro!" A new voice called from the nearby bullpen. "She's in conference room two!"

"Cheers, James!" the redhead called as she left to head to the elevator.

It wasn't long before Romanae returned to the room, a small little smile playing at her lips as she gestured for Killian to follow her. "C'mon. Our medic is in the conference room with the mother. You can come hand the baby over, then we'll need you to take a look at a few photos and then look at a line-up, if that's okay?"

It'd have to be okay, she didn't say, though her tone brokered no room for negotiation or argument. The redheaded agent walked only ten or so feet down a corridor on their left and then pushed the door open for Killian. "His mother is in here," the agent warned. "And she really just wants her kid back. You're doing the right thing."

Assa had been seated alone at the table, a handkerchief clenched between the fingers of one hand whilst the medic, Iante Clowes, stood at her side. They had both been looking at some form of paperwork, if the paper strewn across the table was anything to go by, and both jerked their heads upright when Killian entered the room.

Instantly, Assa was on her feet and crying as her child was returned to her. She ignored the man for a long few minutes, all of her attention on Cetec as she carefully sat herself back down. Long, pale fingers traced the curve of the child's nose, went through his hair and she gently dusted his face with light kisses. The sobbing turned into delighted laughter, and she raised pale, red-rimmed eyes to Killian with the most magnificent, watery smile.

"Thank you so much," she breathed, "thank you so, so much..." Iante knelt down in front of Assa, stethoscope earpieces already in his ears and the chestpiece in hand. "Goddess, Cetec, Mummy missed you so much. Mummy's so, so sorry, 'Tec, so sorry. I won't leave you with him ever again, I promise, I promise."

Romanae bit down a full-blown grin (gosh, if her own kid had been sold, she'd have been more of a mess than Assa was; thankfully her little girl was quite safe in MTAC with his father) and touched a hand to Killian's arm. "We should leave them for a bit - you can see them again afterwards, if you like --"

"Romanae!" James' voice was sharp as he strode into the conference room and held out a piece of paper to the younger woman. "We've got a problem." She spent a short moment reading over the information printed on the sheet, and then turned back to Killian.

"We've got more than a problem. Mister Doyle, please follow James to the interrogation room."

"You'll need a lawyer," James nodded. Unlike Daniel, he was quite calm and entirely professional about his statement. "Though if you could just confirm some information, we'd be grateful."

Romanae arrived minutes later. "They're settled. You want to handle this, Isaacs?"

"If you don't mind," the man agreed. He took a seat opposite Killian and handed over the piece of paper Romanae had returned to him. "This piece of paper contains the details of a few people. You, of course, Mister Killian Doyle, and one Mister Caleb Jefferson. He's one of our suspects. If you'll take a look at the name of the father listed in both records, you might see why we're concerned right now."

"Of course," James agreed, glancing at the other agent in the room with a slightly confused look. "We've plenty of time."

"I'll contact the DA, Isaacs," Romanae stated, and she was soon on her way out. She passed Matthew Jenkins on her way, as the receptionist had given him a visitor's pass and directed him to the interrogation room.

"I will say that we're not assuming anything at this point. This is solely about the child's well-being, and if his father has managed to set something up that is actually a lot bigger than one night of drunken stupidity, we have to exercise every caution in protecting him. We won't be arresting you unless you give us reason to, Mister Doyle."

"Well, there's the fact that he purchased a human child a few days ago, and then there's the slight problem in that, though he told us initially that he bought the child so as to save him from his drunken father, he failed to contact the police, social services or even leave an anonymous tip regarding the child's whereabouts and safety. That added to this documentation," James added, gesturing to the piece of paper Killian had, "we have reason to believe it a possibility that your client may have been involved with the child's sale from the start. It would appear that Mister Killian Doyle is a half-sibling to the man who sold the infant."

James ended his explanation there and sat back in his chair; the ball was in the lawyer's court now.

"We don't require any evidence either in favour of our contrary to our theory," James stated, considering the pair opposite him with cool indifference. "We haven't arrested your client. Merely asked him to provide us with information regarding how he got the child, his connection to our suspect, and whether or not he can identify said suspect in a line-up."

Romanae re-entered the room at that point, holding out a mobile phone for her companion. "James. DA Scott's on the phone for you." She remained in the room whilst he left to handle the District Attorney.

"As far as I'm concerned," Romanae started, though she paused to consider her words carefully. "Listen, from what I've heard and seen, your client never seemed to be interested in harming the child or selling him on. However, after searching his name on an adoption database... Well, I'm sure you're both aware of what we found. If we hadn't recognised the child, would you have come forward and offered him, just to check? Or would you have left the woman in the conference room childless so that you could have a baby?"
