"Splat. There may have been no visible end at the top of the stairs, but from the echoing crunch of broken bone, obliterated flesh and destroyed limb. Varyn could hazard a guess that there was indeed an end."

The bats gathered on Lady Une, landing Jaeda atop a roof of one of the apartment buildings. She leaned over it precariously, knowing that if she fell no harm would befall her. She took in a great, big breath, back arching as she caught the scent of something sweet.

She dropped from the roof, right onto an unsuspecting human boy. Her hand wrapped around his mouth, and her fangs sank into his neck. She held him close, thinking only of the blood running along her tongue.

When the body went limp, she dropped it onto the ground, and leaned against the wall of the apartment. She slid across it, lazily, into a nearby alley.

"I couldn't help myself. I couldn't do anything to control it. He bit me. He said I was still human and I could smell it!"

"No kidding."

Walking beside the giant lizardman in absolute fearlessness was the exact opposite of everything that he stated about himself. It was a short, effeminate, frail-looking young man wearing a simple sweater and tan slacks. They had their hands stuffed into their pockets, looking up to Yol with a great big grin in greeting.

"You fit right in, though, I think. Not a lot of the smaller fry will want to mess with you, so that already erases a lot of trouble that you might get into. That's useful, right? Gotta be!"

"I possess no song but the ones I sing in the shower, big guy." said the small human, skipping a bit to catch up with he giant steps of the dragon guy.

"What's an urti? That's not bad, right? You want places to eat? Huh..." Someone as big as him...Gambit's would have been the best! Or so they heard. But it had been closed down.

"I know there's a place near here called Canti's! They're pretty friendly. There's also a lot of hotels on Main Street. I'm sure they'll have a room you could fit in!"

"Uh...so when you say the People of the Song, what are you referring to? Also!" He jogged a bit to catch up again, "Burning water is like, coffee, right? Or maybe soda. We have those!"

They stopped for a moment, trying to think. "Blissful stupor! Well, that's an easy guess! Um. Alcohol! Right? Right. I can get you somewhere with alcohol! Might clean the place out, though! Hope you've got some cash on you. Oh, oh, you think you can intimidate them enough to gimmie some, too? They keep saying I'm too young!"

They were twenty six, dammit!

"Oh, and I'm Robin. That's my name!"

"Enjoyable? Oh, you haven't been with me long enough!" the young man laughed.

"Credits. There's a place that processes foreign currency to credits, though! We should go there first. You probably have a lot of cool rare gems and stuff from where you're from. Yeah, you gotta." They paused.

"That's a really long name, so I'll call you Yol. Short and sweet! That's the best kind. Well, for some things. Where are we going?"

Let him go?

As if in mock humor, the one eel protruding from the woman's body grabbed at the side of its victim's neck, and tossed it toward the brave young man who had stepped forth in opposition.

After an ear-rattling screech, sixteen, perhaps twenty, of these creatures began to extend from the woman's rib cage, going after several people all at once. One went for a young brown-haired lad walking down the street, easily swallowing half his body, snapping it in half. Another went for a group of girls trying to escape down the sidewalk. Several more went for the catboy, trying to cut off his path and reroute him down to the ground, toward the madness.

And yet another twined through the air and aimed a strike for dear ol' Rick.

Quickly, out of an alley, a young man pulled out, looking flushed. He wiped the back of his neck of sweat, then looked around. Adjusting his collar, he began to trot out and away, both from the group and the whole gory crime scene. An abdomen and a pair of legs wearing matching pants and shoes to the boy caught his attention, but he soon danced away from it and sprinted out of sight.

The kid had a death wish. He really did. Or perhaps he just had no fear.

Either way, the boy had made his way through Verinotte Square to this place, the Tavern. It was a damn shame he was not able to visit that Gambit's place. It seemed like it would have been fun, but this place was just as dangerous, they had heard. It would do.

Coming inside, the brown-haired, well-dressed young man had already spotted someone. They paused at the door, watching the young...uh...what...what was...

"...whoa, there," he said, kneeling down next to the table where the...horse...girl...right? Yeah. Where she was. "You alright?"

He smiled, putting his elbows on his knees. "Hey, it's okay. Uh, this place is kind of dangerous." He held out a hand for her. "What in the world is someone like you doing here? Don't you think you should be in the nicer parts of town? Like the Glenn or something?"

"Yeah, all the kids around here are vampires..." muttered Robin, scratching the back of his neck. "They don't make good playmates, so I hear, haha." He tried to help her towards a...a...booth, if that was the best thing to do, and thought. "I don't have any bandages or first aid, myself. I'm not sure how much I'd be able to help you."

"Oops. Well, uh...I'm sure there's..."

The boy's mind raced. He could do the gentlemanly thing and...aww, he didn't want to do that!

"Hey, just to make sure nothing really smells all that blood, here-" He shrugged off his jacket, putting it onto a nearby chair, and took hold of his shirt sleeve.

Yeah, he ripped it off. And after he did that, he knelt down to tie it onto Esperanza's leg. He did not want to snoop around a Vampire bar, of all things, for first aid. Who knew what he would find? So he did it like this, for now.

"That'll do you until you get home or something."

"Robin," they introduced myself. "A pleasure, Ranza. I like the name. Sounds peppy." He slid his jacket back on, hiding the damaged sleeve. It didn't matter, after all. When next something terrible happened...

"So you were running from those kids, huh?"

"Oh, you know, getting into trouble." There really wasn't anything better than being in trouble, though often, others would disagree. "You know where you are, right? One of the most dangerous places in Aslund, as far as I'm concerned! Though..." Robin looked around the empty tavern.

"Well, right now, that seems to prove false."

Robin scratched the back of his neck again, laughing. "Aw, well shucks. Thanks." he said, laying his foot onto his knee. "You're pretty cute, too." He looked toward the bar, wondering about food, himself.

"You, uh, you think...you think that they have normal food here?"

"Which other place are you talking about?"

"Oh, that place!" said Robin. "Yeah, from what I heard, Gambit's wife died. He's not opening it back up until his killer's been found." They looked over the menu really closely. There were burgers here, right? Nachos...something...

"Wing City's exciting, huh?"

The darkness seemed to move in on Nairi, like a blanket thrown over someone to smother them. Sound almost disappeared altogether. The creaking. The animals. The wind outside. It all, very slowly, was smothered as well.

The silence was broken quickly by the rapid footsteps toward Nairi's location. There was ragged breathing, even a whimper, and if the catboy had not moved quickly, he would find himself smashed into.

The pressing, smothering darkness came close to panicking Nairi with its claustrophobic intensity. He fought against his instincts, though, staying low and tensed, ready to spring in any given direction. The sudden silence was unnerving, and he strained to hear, see, even smell anything at all. This was bad. He needed to find a way to get rid of it.

Footsteps. Nairi's reflexes kicked in, and the crouched youth sprung upwards, launching himself away and into the side of a nearby crate. He kicked off of it, viciously slashing his sword like a claw across where he'd been standing moments before in an attempt to strike back at the unseen assailant as he rebounded.

The werecat landed in a crouch and darted backwards, away, teeth bared in a hiss of anger.

"Ahh!"

The slash of the sword hit its target square, though it was, perhaps, a little less harmful than expected. A splatter hit the ground as a pained gasp was taken.

"Wh-who is that!?" cried a voice, young and boyish. There was shuffling. Someone was trying to get to the door, wherever it was.

"I-I'm not here to cause any trouble! I swear!"

Nairi's eyes narrowed suspiciously, but he deftly sheathed his sword and slipped forwards towards the source of the voice. He crossed the distance in but a few moments in low leaps and bounds, blindly reaching for an arm or shoulder - something to grab onto and yank the figure towards him.

"Who are you?" he demanded, voice sharp, almost a hiss. "Speak, boy-thing, child-thing. Tell me. No time to waste. Danger here."

A young man looked back at Nairi, a mop of brown bangs in his face, and within them, terror. Not all the fear within those eyes seemed genuine, however.

"...R-Robin! M'names Robin!" he stuttered, one hand on his chest, bleeding heavily, the other on Nairi's wrist. "L-let go! Let go of me! There's things in here! Weird things!"

Nairi stared into Robin's eyes searchingly, before grabbing a fistful of his shirt and focusing. Abruptly, he blinked in recognition, startled. "You. Boy-thing that died. Snapped in half, but then walked clear minutes later. What are you?"

He shook his head dismissively then, "Never mind. Not the time. What things? No, you didn't see, no point asking." the black-cloaked youth turned, warily, on guard for an attack from the oppressive darkness. "Go, leave. Get to safety. This is not a place for prey."

The werecat once more drew his sword, starting to creep onwards again. He paused to cast a glance back at Robin, to make sure the boy was leaving.

"Prey?!" Robin spat, eyes popping open. "I'm not-" The boy stopped, hand grasping at the wound. "You nearly cleaved me in half! You expect me to crawl out of here by myself?"

With no answers, at that!

"Where did you even come from? What...what's up with this place?"

"You startled me." Was Nairi's response to the accusation, because apparently that made it all okay. The werecat paused, crouching a short distance away and tilting his head back towards Robin impassively. His bright gold eyes stood out unnaturally luminously in the darkness. "I came from outside. Even for a human, you are stupid. Where else would I come from?"

He grinned playfully, teasingly, rocking forwards on the balls of his feet precariously, and yet somehow maintaining perfect balance. "I do not know this place. I am here to find out what lurks here. Go or stay, it does not matter. Just don't get in my way."
