Sugar and spice is what she wants you to think
Sam, at heart, is an intense, cunning, and intelligent person...but barely anyone gets to find that out. Sam doesn't really trust anyone that much and puts up a facade of cheerfulness and sweetness. Her "friends" at school think she is nice, fun, maybe a bit naive, but just your average pleasant girl. Not mean or popularity obsessed at all. Nobody ever suspects the "normal girl" of anything, allowing her to run circles around her family, teachers, and anyone in her way. She cheats constantly in school, not because she can't do the work but because she enjoys the challenge and would rather teach herself to spy than learn the drivel her teachers spew out. She considers herself as simply a spy under very deep cover, and plans to work for the FBI someday. She is very cynical about life in general and believes that the only way to get anything done is to do it yourself.
Her father was a war veteran... everyone talked about how brave he was, and nobody mentioned how scary it made him. He had nightmares about the war, and they made him lash out at his family and friends. He never hurt her or yelled directly at her or anything, but she was still young, and he was moody and unpredictable, and he scared her. Her mother was too wrapped up in taking care of him to notice her, so with nobody else there Sam turned to herself. She became completely detatched from her outside appearance, never saying what she really thought, pretending to take part in one conversation while listening in on another. For her, it worked just fine.
