She was born to a middle-class family, an only child who was well loved by her parents. Growing up, the girl suffered from horrible night terrors that her parents simply hoped she'd learn to grow out of. So she went to school, and performed at an average level, until she reached middle school years and started to fall asleep in class. The girl had more trouble deciphering between dream and reality, since hallucinations had become a rather common thing for her to experience. On more than one occasion, she violently lashed out at classmates, mistaking them for someone who was trying to harm her, and when attempts were made to calm her down, she would begin speaking to herself in an unsettling manner, as if it were two people having a discussion, rather than one.

At fourteen, her parents began taking her to see a psychologist, who put her on antipsychotic medications in an effort to control the symptoms. Rather than improve them, however, the medications only made it worse, and additionally, her parents seemed to be suffering from similar night terrors that their daughter often described.

When the nightmares became too much, her parents claimed that she was possessed by a demon, and had her committed, where she remained for three years. During that time period, however, she discovered that the terrors she'd suffered from were merely symptoms of an ability she didn't realize she had. She could not only alter the realities of her own conscious mind, but in other people's as well. She could make them see things that weren't there, feel pain without cause, and be completely incapable of discerning reality from dream.

With this knowledge, she honed her capabilities, effectively curing herself of the debilitating nightmares, and managed to escape from the facility that had held her for so many years.

Now, she wanders.

So begins...

She didn't know what to make of Gambit's bar at first. It was hard to say. The place was loud, noisy, filled with people and uncomfortably crowded. It reminded her too much of the place she used to call home. And, if listening in on the other conversations proved useful, it didn't seem as though the types of conversations that occurred were that much different.

She rolled her shoulders, hiking up the straps of her bookbag a little higher onto her shoulder. Tall and willowy, the seventeen year old had the youthful look that said she probably shouldn't have been wandering in a bar in the first place, but it was the first place she'd found that spoke of beds and a safe place to sleep. She figured that was what she needed most at the moment.

She looked from Renegade to Ichigo to Sir Prise, standing a little awkwardly as she hooked her thumbs underneath the straps.

"Someone know where the hotel is?" she asked, her soft voice straining when she tried to be heard.

With a blank expression, the girl turned her eyes to the young man that sat not too far away from where she stood. She shifted her weight from one foot to the next, lips pursing for a moment before turning to look at the stairwell he suggested. She made no move to go there, not yet, especially not after he'd so eloquently warned her against it.

She blinked slowly, focusing for a moment before turning to look back at Christopher.

"Ok." A pause, then her lips parted again, and after a hesitant breath...

"Thank you."

"I'm trying to decide if I've dreamed you or not." she managed after a long silence. She shifted her weight again, glancing away from him. She couldn't erase him, so he must have been a part of the physical reality that had been built for her, but why was it that she recognized him?

"Sorry, that probably sounded really stupid." Her cheeks flushed, and she took a step back, feeling self conscious in the way that only a teenager could. Biting on her lower lip, she looked towards him once more. "You said to the left?" Left of what, really. Growing more uncomfortable by the minute, she anxiously dug her fingertips into the straps of her bag. Her brow furrowed.

"Do you hear that?"

A high pitched keening sound.

"It isn't a good noise." she said, rubbing at her ear, and wishing she could make it stop. Things got this way when she was tired and stressed, though. She couldn't stop the fusion of reality and unreality, and if she wasn't careful, she tended to impress that upon the mentalities of the people around her, too.

Which is why it most certainly wasn't a good thing that the young man could hear what she was hearing. She looked toward the door, past him, her eyes narrowing slightly.

"Sorry. I...know I look like a complete nutcase right now. It's hard to explain." She came up to his side, staring towards the door for a moment. "I'm unused to being outside. There's...lots of things I'm not used to. I guess you call it...sensation overload?"

God, even speaking made her tense. "Hard to figure out what's real and what isn't."

"It's been a while." So many people speaking.

"You get used to the same four walls, and its much easier to tell what is real and what isn't. But I'm not used to this place. Not used to being outside. So its hard to tell what my mind has created and what originally existed." The grip on her straps was white.

"They didn't want to let me leave. They said I couldn't function. But I can." she nodded to reassure herself. "I can. I'm not crazy like they all say I am. My parents knew. The rest of them knew. I know its all real now, because I made everyone else believe in my reality."

Even as the words came, she knew they didn't make the slightest bit of sense. Feeling almost desperate, she reached for his hand, gripping his wrist firmly.

"You see me?" she asked, knowing he couldn't. But then, she showed herself to him, impressed the picture of her image into his mind so that he could see her as if she was standing in front of him, even if, physically, it wasn't possible.

"Reality from dream."

She let go of his hand.

She stared at him, the relief plain on her features, and through her entire demeanor. She'd caught him. For a moment, she believed that she had finally made someone understand. How ironic, that the first to believe her would be a man who couldn't see at all.

"I'm Shei." she said, her voice soft. "Shei Lin, and I'm lost."

In more ways than one.

Then, hesitantly, "Do you...understand where I'm coming from?"

She slipped outside ahead of him, crossing her arms over her chest as she turned to look back at Christopher. He believed her. She had someone who, for once, didn't think she was crazy. When he closed the door behind him, she hovered closer to him, her lips pursed gently as she awaited whatever questions may come.

"It's easier to think out here." she said, softly. "I didn't mean to grab your hand like that...I just didn't know how else to make it...make sense."

She seemed to hesitate. If she told him where she'd come from, would he send her back? Could he do that? Probably not, if she had that affect on him before, it was very possible that she could do something less pleasant too.

"I suffered with night terrors for a long time." she told him. "And as I got older, the things I saw in my dreams blended with what I saw when I was awake." She hugged herself. "Made it hard to tell what was real, and what wasn't. My parents took me to see doctors, had me medicated, but it only made it worse."

She shrugged. "Then, my parents started seeing what I was seeing. They had me committed." She looked away from him.

"For, um...a long time. I only just managed to... get out."

With the promise that he wasn't going to write her off as unstable, Shei seemed to relax quite a bit. Her demeanor changed, became more accomodating, more normal as she watched the calm understanding flicker across his face.

Her eyes flickered to his wallet, and she frowned. "You don't have to do that." she said, her shoulders tense. "Really, I have nothing to pay you back with."

But he started down the street, glancing back to her, and she inevitably found herself following.

She followed behind him, quiet up until the moment he paused to ask her a rather curious question. She watched him, watched his eyes.

"Yes." Her lips pursed slightly.

"What do you want to see?"

"As far as I know." she replied honestly, catching up with him and walking along at his side. Calm. Normal. He believed her, and what an incredible blessing it was.

Reaching out to lay a hand on the top of his arm, the one with the cane, she encouraged him to stop.

"Might get dizzy." she explained, and, like the unfurling of a curtain, the world as she saw it became unveiled to Christopher. Including herself, her hand on his arm, the colors and the shapes were precise replicas of what she could physically see.

"I can make an entire room of people believe that the sky is overcast...I can make them think they feel rain on their skin in the middle of a downpour."

And, like that, the 'sky' clouded, 'rain' beginning to fall in a gentle tempest against to the ground. The pattering was not absent, and neither was the cool feel of it against their bodies.

But, it was all imagined. A false reality. She took her hand away again, and the vision would fade from Christopher's 'eyes'.

She felt a little dizzy.

Her lips parted with her confusion. This was certainly the oddest of questions she'd been asked. The last time she'd dared show anyone even the smallest bit of her 'talent', she'd been heavily sedated and locked in a padded room, accused of demonic possession, and much, much worse. Needless to say, she was a little bit skeptical of his request.

"I never thought about it, to be honest." she replied, the uncertainty in her tone making her seem that much more the child. Seventeen, maybe even eighteen. She couldn't remember now. She looked over the blind man, trying to read him, though perceiving hidden thoughts was not one of her talents in the least bit.

"I...suppose. If I hope to..." do anything of consequence. "I'm young though. Not a lot of experience." In anything.

The skepticism returned. "Doing what, exactly?"

Her brow furrowed, but there was no hint of distress. "It didn't take as much effort to construct your..." Vision? Hallucination? Reality?

Thinking the last word caused her to shudder involuntarily. "What I helped you see. Uh, the more complicated the scene, the more energy it takes. I had expected a little more effort on my part, but it seemed too much..." She searched his expression, the pieces slowly beginning to fit together. Rather than come to conclusions, she just continued to watch, to listen. On top of being a particularly perceptive young woman, she was also very patient.

It was an invitation for him to continue.

She didn't say anything for a long while, mostly because she didn't know what to say. What he was offering her was well beyond anything she'd ever expected to come from a near-stranger. Acceptance was the first marvel, and now an opportunity to potentially use this ability of hers to benefit other people? She paused in her steps, staring down the street ahead of them as she thought.

"My own parents thought I was possessed." she told him, not in a way to get some kind of pity, but more to inform him about the general public's thoughts on her capabilities. She wondered how her talent could actually help others.

"You see what can't be seen...and I can create lies." She frowned. "How could I help other people with what I can do?"

"I suppose that, after so many years of being called crazy...even a monster, I started to believe it myself. Hard habit to break."

But, she fell into step at his side, all the same. These thoughts gave her a new kind of discomfort, though it wasn't an upleasant kind. For a long time, she'd confined herself to a specific mode of thinking, that so long as she could separate reality from dream, she'd be able to function properly, perhaps even return to her family. Now, with meeting Christopher, who thought her ability might be used for a common good...

The idea of actively using what she'd considered a negative part of herself was mind-boggling, like a reformed thief being asked to steal from the rich to give to those who were needy. Did the benefits outweigh the risks here? What if her nightmares began to come true again?

"I'll have to think about it." she said finally, hugging herself. She sounded uncertain, and turned her eyes to the ground.

She hesitated, as if she was going to argue against him giving her anything at all. At the same time, she knew it was a foolish prospect to deny his help. She needed, more than anything, the security of a friend she could trust. Perhaps Christopher could meet those needs. He'd helped her already, and he hadn't even tried.

Pursing her lips, she reached to take the money from him, her fingertips clasping the bills for a moment as she looked into his eyes.

"The morning sounds good." she said. She wouldn't be sleeping too much that night anyway. Plenty of time to think.

She folded the bills into her hands, slipping them into the front pocket before she looked off towards the hotel, the ghost of a smile on her face.

"I don't know that I could hope for better prospects." she said. She glanced to him, before saying, "Thank you."

And, with that, she moved on ahead, aiming to duck inside the hotel lobby so she could hole up for the night.

There wasn't much to be said about the slight, simply clad young lady who approached and stepped into the diner with all the confidence of a debutante at her coming-out ball. Wearing a loose-fitting sweat shirt and denim capris, with a backpack strapped to her back, the Asian female looked for all the world like an adolescent on her way home from school.

Ordering herself a cup of coffee, she walked over to a booth, sliding inside and setting her bag on the floor before folding her hands neatly in front of her.

Eyes an unusual shade, a light pink from too much vasculature located within the irises of her eye, flickered open, shifting to meet Ethan's hesitant stare with a gaze of her own. She appeared almost shy, possibly not much older than seventeen. Lifting her chin, the woman's lips parted uncertainly, brow furrowing just a tad before she finally smiled.

"And you are Ethan Railee." she confirmed with a nod, her accent mildly exotic. She kept her hands to herself, but inclined her head to him respectfully.

"I am Shei Lin, yes."

She glanced to his hand, before meeting his eye with a curious quirk to her brow. "You have come to see if I am worthy. If my talents can be of use to your group of...defenders." She chose her words carefully, as if the language was not something that came naturally to her. "To protect our planet from those who wish to conduct evil."

She reached for his hand, and grasped it firmly.

What he saw through his own eyes would change drastically, the diner around them morphing, widening, the ceiling falling away and the pavement melting into the streets as everything, the diner, the buildings, the city itself dissipated into thin air.

Nothing remained, saved their sole booth, sitting in the middle of a vast field blanketed by an expanse of stars.

She let go of his hand, and the vision did not fade.

"Try not to look around." she cautioned him, her eyes glowing as she gazed at him. "What I know of your organization is that you make use of weapons, relying on strength of body, strength of wit. What I come to offer you now is strength of mind."

She nodded slowly, and the vision rapidly reset, the diner returning to them as if sprouting right out of the ground. All was normal again.

She was smiling, watching him. "I can change how people see the world, Ethan Railee."

She nestled her chin on folded hands, watching Ethan curiously. "You can sense my emotions, can you not?" she questioned. "Your mind reaches for mine the same way mine reaches for yours. So, can't you tell me why I wish to join? Or at least decipher that my intentions are noble?"

Her eyes glanced to the table. "I wish to help, to have a purpose and accomplish good things. It is what any moral-bound citizen would be eager to do. I have a gift that I'm eager to put to good use." She met his eyes again.

Her calm, collected demeanor faltered for a moment, the confidence melting as she looked away from him and gazed at the table. Steeling herself, she took a deep breath and nodded, now tentatively placing her hands in his.

"So long as you're ready." she murmured softly, bowing her head.

It was a warning.

The moment the floodgates were open, it would be difficult to stop. Confusion, breathless excitement and fear were the most prominent feelings, the most potent. Acute sensations of bitterness and disappointed laced this, a sense of loss, rejection by those whom she had trusted, terror and panic, feverish anxiety and still more mind-numbing confusion...

...darkness...and abject stillness, complete absence of thought and feeling...the wonder of reawakening sensations...and the breathless relief that only freedom could supply.

Shei Lin's eyes were wide open, her fingers tense in his. Now, at the end, one thing Ethan would sense most was her childish need for approval, a noble desire to help, and the painful vulnurability that came from having all of this revealed.
