Shine Polyp

Scavenger fauna from the outer planes that mirrors the intellect that interacts with it

0 · 445 views · located in Tethys Ocean

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by lil_kreen

Description

Shine polyps are from the darker planar spaces where psionic creatures lie in wait. Docile as a rule they clean the discarded prey of alpha species as well consuming the waste energy and ectoplasm they leave behind. Their minds are things that reconfigure to mirror the intellect of which they interact. Nevertheless they remain unlikely to take actions even if their mirror may reflect violence. While observed while they may be incapable of many of the advanced skills of the observer but most mundane skills can be undertaken as long as it serves their baser interests. Psionics can empower them with skills but one must convince oneself that the action they undertake is within the polyp's baser interests. It is singularly difficult to both lie to oneself while giving some of one's genuine power to another. If they interact with a different mind they undertake the new mind leaving the previous behind and any memories or powers gained.

They are known to be able to be milked of stored power by other psionics at the circle of power fluctuating in their chest but they cannot contain much of it without some sort of augmentation.

So begins...

The shattering of planes inevitably drew scavengers and those that traversed them long often knew of the VOORP of one squeezing in between the cracks. Shine polyps came from beyond the pale to trail behind the wake of alpha beings cleaning the field of their leavings. Their byproduct was a room cleansed of psionic dissonance and to individuals that could sense such things they'd developed a pleasing melodic hum as they worked. Docile to a fault at their tasks of eating that peculiar mirroring behavior was quite strong in the larger specimen. Though it lacked a certain elegance belonging to sapient minds it was easily shaped and improved upon. Their only real defense to adopt the behavior of the psionic intellects observing them by nature a thought surface now robustly malleable.

This particular one was huge and height of a man at least a shadow that slips into reality as if pushed through cracks sideways. Flailing networks of mycellium scrape clean the walls of the facility as it wanders toward the one psionic it saw. Eager for freshly discarded meat. With another sucking noise it bent at wrong angles around an interceding door what passed for a head turning toward the discarded scientist then to Ilx'ilthervix. The purple frilled fungal creature quietly undulated its flaps in space moving softly for the discarded scientist, head prostrate in a soft humm, to suppress dissonance in the larger psionic landscape.

The other mindflayers still present took notice of the bottom feeder. They seemed curious at first until their slaves they dominated began to reveal the location of the team that entered into the base. The aberrations simply began to gather what they wanted and left the dead to the creatures that would come all the while the portal to the other side began exuding a strange aura about it as stranger creatures began to poor into the facility.

These beasts stood five feet on all fours with their main mass of that of a brain with the legs of a lion. A strange proboscis dangled from their brain bodies and they began to move in packs as they scoured further into the laboratory. As the gate remained open more of the incursion would pour into the realm the Aschens called home and with it a stronger psychic aura began to form around the undersea facility.

"Planck packs are still charging..." Hanley replied over the radio to an inquiry from one of the team leaders in regards to sealing off the energy anomalies detected in the Reverence.

He grunted slightly before adjusting the placement of his psionic inhibitor, a technological marvel that kept the intrusive psychic influences out, preserving the man's mind and sanity from the surrounding facility.

The Sergeant was already hard at work configuring the high-yield nuclear warhead should things go south, though things were factored in such as radiation damage to the surrounding ecosystem, the benefits outweighed the risks, so the decision was made to proceed with the nuclear weapon.

Team Alpha was nearing the main lab complex, including the portal room, while Team Beta was moving swiftly towards the main power room, where they could attatch explosive charges to detonate in tandem with the nuclear device being installed by team Gamma.

Just on the other side, the strange alien creatures were gathering, the Team Leader nodded, and then checked his weapon.

"By the lords what are those things?" A young corporal asked, peering in through a small window.

"Stack up! Charges set! Ready Grenades!" The Team leader bellowed.

The creatures on the other side were likely ready for their advance, so once the team was stacked and the charges set, they readied two psychic disruption grenades, and two plasma grenades, they would throw the grenades into the room first, and then moved quickly, neutralizing creatures and infected personnel alike.

There was a deafening bang, and the door careened out towards the assembled creatures, and the portal. Immediately following, psychic grenades were hurled inside, detonating in a powerful pulse of psychic noise that was intended to cause debilitating pain to even the most astute psychic mind caught within the radius of the pulse.

Plasma grenades followed, erupting in white hot flashes of blue light, sending plasma in all directions around the main laboratory.

The Soldiers moved in next, opening fire the moment they crossed the door's threshold, their weapons barked their deafening reports, and 8.8mm projectiles tore towards the creatures at speeds of about 2,300 meters per second.

Along with these small tungsten projectiles, brilliant streaks of green disruptor energy seared downrange, aimed at the mindflayers that were hopefully briefly incapacitated by the psychic grenades.

"Watch the tentacles!" A corporal shouted, as the men moved quickly for cover, saturating the area of the large brain like entity, and Ilx'ilthervix.

The flapping creature was close the the floor extending thick undulating roots of hyphae into the leg of the meat that the alpha did not inhibit it from taking. Like a squirrel with a precious fruit the leg of the scientist exploded with purple tendrils as roots shot through the meat cracking the bone to secure its prize starting to drag it away to eat safely.

Then the noise emerged though it only looked up for a moment before the creature squealed a similarly deafening hum. Psychic grenades hit the outer fauna with surprised pain as much as using paniced strength to soften the pounding noise of painfully concentrated dissonance. The flapping turned rapid and hurried as it wheeled about in midair dragging its prize behind it away from the pain. It hit a wall the flailed about for a bit the head turning to try and see through the dissonance penetrating its mind. It took several bullets from the rifles which impacted with hard wooden thups squirting spore and blue ichor into the air. Neither was healthy for men to expose themselves whether by touch or breathing lest they host a colony of newborn.

"Watch the TENTACLES!", shouted an identical voice from the floor as the shine polyp left to scatter a office chair behind a desk. The prize hauled in like fishing line the purple fuzz of growing thickness spread up the leg. The femur cracked loudly as it shattered the bone from within.

"Watch the TENTACLES!", it repeated in the same man's voice. It hadn't a template to reflect his mind with its environment full of invisible creatures and pain, except for the alpha, though it certainly could hear the results of minds somewhere. Flaps tightened over the seared holes where it had been shot. The creature hoped the threat would pass and hid to hurridly eat its meal.

The Mindflayer leader and his companions would indeed flinch as the psychic grenade went off sending a wave of pain in all directions. However as the armed men pulled their weapons up towards the aberrations the mindflayers began to cast their spells and unleash their psionic might even if it was handicapped.

"Cover my retreat!"

Ilx'Ilthervix retreated into the portal as several mindflayers threw up a few barriers to shield their leader from the ricocheting bullets whilst other fleshy robed aberrations fell from the flurry of bullets. The room was still filled with many more mages and psionics as the mindflayers that stayed began to try to push their wills upon the soldiers whilst throwing up barriers and summoning interdimensional creatures by far more threatening and terrifying than themselves.

The summoned creatures appeared to be large brains the size of a man with four legs and a massive beak which protruded at the front. They would rush towards the marines whilst the Mindflayers continued their mental and magical assault with spells and psionic blasts alike.

One Marine watched as the Shine Polyp took the leg of someone that it appeared the Alpha had killed. Gritting his teeth, he bore his Disruptor rifle and fired several shots, sending searing green bolts down towards the skittering creature, liquefying metal on impact the missed shots sent molten metal exploding outwards in every direction.

Each disruptor impact released thermal energy equating to several tens of thousands of degrees fahrenheit, which would hopefully neutralize the organisms within the blue ichor that spurted out from the strange creature.

Thick plumes of smoke from charred flesh, and ozone filled the room relatively quickly as well, torn asunder by the occasional brilliant green flash of disruptor energies.

Behind cover, the men kept their distance, choosing to engage at range.

But the summoned creatures proved to be more of a threat, weapons were turned on the creature, 8.8mm projectiles ripping through flesh, while disruptor bolts blew the creatures to pieces, sending gore and viscera in every direction.

Energy barriers also reacted violently with each disruptor impact, but the men held their ground.

"Antimana! Antipsi out!" One marine called out, arming an anti-mana and psychic disruption grenade, and with a wide arc, he hurled the two grenades towards Ilx'Ilthervix, cooking them just long enough that they detonated in mid-air, sending both an Anti-psychic pulse that would disorient, and cause another wave of immense pain, and the anti-magic grenade would serve to split the arcane energies asunder.

"Alpha team, Planck Packs are charged, we're activating them now."

Ilx'Ilthervix and his slaves would have scant seconds to retreat through the portal, before the Planck Packs on the Reverence slammed it shut, cutting the creatures off from their home; and giving the Aschen forces a huge advantage.

The shine polyp noticed the lack of the alpha looking around from its cover sporting new holes and shards of molten metal searing flesh. It held very close to the ground but with the alpha gone hurled above the desk at the noisy creatures a half-eaten hand with sporulated structures swelling out of it. Chunks of the shine polyp were already throbbing and growing on detritus littering the floor with smoky pulses of released spores propelled by bullet impacts spreading from corpse to corpse. The fungal creature much like siphonophores could function with the many holes pounded and burnt into it but most certainly did not intend to stay for more if the alpha had left.

With the pain emerging from the newest psychic grenade the flexible creature sporting smoking holes couldn't shift out but pressed to the floor shooting out the room toward the portal like a slug. Once outside the room several VOORP sounds emerged as the creature chased down the mind flayer across the portal line. Chasing Ilx'Ilthervix like the remora it was. Ignorant of the infestation it had left behind.

"Fall."

Ilx'Ilthervix's tentacles squirmed as he let out a bellowing roar only to extend a single elongated finger towards one of the marines that had been slaughtering his men and the summoned abominations. A thunderous crack filled the room as a jolt of electricity jumped from the mindflayers finger and towards its target leaving devastation in its wake as the ground it traversed seemed to melt at its presence alone.

Several of the other psionic members of the eldritch beings coterie would rush up to their leader after the spell was cast only to usher him into the portal so that their leader would not be trapped in this god forsaken world. After all they already had what they came for. Information and new slaves to work and provide them with nourishment.

Upon arriving upon the other side Ilx' Ilthervix silently gave his orders to send in those who had been chained to help his brothers with their defensive spellcasting. It was simply a beautiful exchange as the Eldritch overlord walked through his people who began to release several chained individuals who rushed through the portal and into the undersea labs. The creatures that stepped through the portal however were not mere people but altered and diseased abominations as they let loose howls of pain and terror only to rush alongside the remaining mindflayers and summoned creatures.

"Kill us!" One of the mutated humans shouted as it rushed towards one of the marines. She was a blonde woman in shambles and chains revealing blotched skin which seemed to perpetually shift and alter in painful ways. "Kill me!" She shrieked once more as her fingers began to shift into boney claws which she used to slash at the armored marines. As soon as this woman would change so to did the others as they went to join the others in combat. A single scratch or bite would soon infect the marines causing them to carry the virus and eventually turn them into abominations as well.

Ilx'Ilthervix's bolt cracked through the air, and culminated with a brilliant flurry of shield energies, and the yelp of the struck Marine who was launched backwards onto his back at the resultant bolt of energy. Whether his shields and armor stopped the bolt remained to be seen, but it was too late as the large creature backed into the portal.

Yet the fight wasn't over yet.

Several people, if they could be described as such began to come through the portal, an invasion of sorts; though they didn't get far before meeting their unfortunate end at the hands of brilliant disruptor impacts.

Grunting, the Team Leader downed yet another strange mutant with his weapon, brilliant green bolts of light searing towards them, their bodies erupting in a plume of steam and charred flesh.

"We could use that planck pack now!" The Team Leader called into his radio.

"Planck Packs are coming online... standby."

The air went static for a brief moment, and the Planck field enveloped the portal, likely slamming it shut in an instant, and cutting the eldritch creatures off from the undersea lab.

The remaining infestations, and dead creatures were left, as the men slowly backed up, the sound of rushing water began to fill the room.

"We need to set that nuke." One of the men said, setting the large cylinder on the floor of the lab, keying in the detonation sequence.

"This is Beta Team, All computer records have been copied, we've got our nuke set and we're ready for exfil."

"Gamma team, reactor's secure; our nuke's set and we're ready to head out."

Backing up towards the doorway, the Team Leader nodded. "Set nukes, One millicenton, synchronize and meet at the extraction point; Esteem, we'll be ready for Exfil in five Centons."

Nodding, the men slowly backed out towards the breached door, with everything in the lab hopefully having been killed.

The creatures eating bits of former human and mind flayer alike spread from corpse to corpse across the floor. Plasma grenades seared many on the surface away but spores were hardy things and some were inside bodies. When the water entered the room the entire rear half of the room turned a violent churning violet as streams of microscopic creatures started swimming through it. As the water battered everything and mixed the purple water crawled upstream toward living creatures.
