Silas Quinn

Handsome rapscallion. Lock up your daughters, nail down your gold, batten the hatches. He's got a twinkle in his eye and a flintlock in his pocket.

Description

Silas is reasonably athletic and good-looking, with light tanned skin, dark blonde hair, and piercing blue eyes. He has some light stubble around the chin, and often applies wax to his hair to make it spiky and stand out. He sometimes also wears a silver or gold neck chain around his neck, to denote his success and wealth. He is fond of bright and vibrant jackets and tunics, and often wears white cottton bel-bottoms or doubloons. Although he dislikes perfume, he nonetheless also sometimes applies aftershave and male prefume in order to enhance his 'allure.' He would own up to the description of being a Dandy, and is amused when this causes others to underestimate his ability. He keeps a small purse full of coins and a brace of pistols close to hand at all times, and where possible will also wear his mastercrafted steel rapier openly.

Silas is fairly skinny and short, but makes up for this by keeping his muscles whipcord-lean, from years of experience clambering masts and working with all manner of nautical ropes, sails and crude engines. As a Navigator he considers himself top-notch, and is keenly interested in the Stars, the tide, the winds, and how it all works. In a fight he relies as much on speed, charm, and being as crazy and out-of-the-box as possible in order to stay alive. He lacks raw strength, and his actual skill with a pistol or a sword leaves much to be desired, but he tries to maximise his luck as much as possible.

He currently has no tattoos or scars, but has contemplated getting a four-leaf clover tattoo, as a sort of identifying mark, and as a way of further asserting his individuality.

Personality

Silas Quinn is a complex character. On the surface, he's an archetypal rogue and gambler- smooth-talking, winning smile, good-looking, athletic. He can switch between con-man, pervert and flawless English gentleman with ease, and has been all of these things at some point in his life to somebody. Aware also that sometimes people take objection to him, and also stemming from his general restlessness and boredom with life, Silas also keeps himself in reasonably good physical shape, and has learned to keep himself "in fighting shape". This also reflects his attitude towards confrontation- Silas sees himself as a lover more than a fighter, and though he can often provoke a fight, he will never be found brawling, trading punches or using weapons if he can at all help it. Despite often feeling compelled to taunt would be adversaries and agitate trouble, when it actually becomes too much, Silas will always cut and run.

At a deeper level, Silas is bored and frustrated by life. He has a great deal of raw potential, but schoolwork and religion never interested him, and he lacks any clarity as to what to do with himself in the long-term. He constantly distracts himself with venal pleasures in order to put off having to think about the deeper issues, and work out what he wants to do. Although he sometimes thinks deeply about "natural philosophy" and wonders what the stars -really- are, or how the wind and tides work, he's never really considered himself much of a scientist, being far too busy simply trying to stay alive and enjoy that life as much as possible.

When it comes to Romance, Silas treats it like every other aspect of life- a distraction, a passing experience to prolong having to settle down and face not so much the harshness of reality, but its fundamental mundanity. Responsibility and Consequence are anathema to him, and will wheedle his way out of any relationships he ends up in once he grows bored. More deeper still, Silas's experience with port girls and young women hardened him against women in general, and he doesnt have a lot of respect for them, believing 'all the good ones are taken'. Although a deep part of him would like a 'partner in crime', someone who he could share his luck and life with, its not something he dwells on.

Equipment

Silas Quinn is something of a pirate and vagabond, and as such tries to keep his essential equipment on him at all times. This can include a small, easily concealable purse of valuable coins, a pistol or derringer or even a full brace of pistols if he can get away with it, a scabbard and finely crafted rapier, a set of lockpicks, and when all else fails a concealed bootknife.

Depending on the technology of the world he finds himself in, Silas Quinn may trade "up" for more advanced concealable equipment, but generally he will rely more on his wits and charm to get him through problems, and, when that fails, his ability to run away with considerable speed.

History

The Son of a Shipwright and the daughter of a Fishmonger, Silas grew up with the smell of the sea already in his nostrils, and a tang of salt in his blood. From the earliest age, he watched his father build mighty vessels of oak wood to sail the seas, baring exotic, fine-smelling cargos or bold men to distant lands. His mother, who worked gutting fish for a living, convinced him by her example that normal, landborn labour was foul, arduous and far too tedious for him. He paid attention little at the Church School he was sent to, and dreamed instead of being like the rough and ready men he saw at the docks, and the pirates and adventurers he heard grand stories of.

When he was 13, his father died in a tragic workplace accident, when a carelessly hauled iron-plate to armour plate the new steam-powered vessels fell and crushed him. He mourned his father's death, but knew now that any ties to bind him to the land were severed. This new age of steam and iron promised hope, but it also promised death for the industry his father had wanted him to inherit a job in. His only alternatives seemed to appretince for the same kind of back-breaking labour his mother had slaved for so long at, with so little reward.

His choice, then, had seemed obvious, and since then he had never truly regretted it. He stowed away abroad a Clipper loaded with tea, determined to prove himself as a Cabin Boy. He was lucky- a trait that would emerge time and time again- for the Ship's Master, a Captain Arrow, proved to be kindly and a well educated gentleman. He took a shine to the young boy, and began to teach him etiquette, classical languages, and the knowledge of the stars and seas. Often mocked as the Captain's little pet, Silas soon proved himself as something more, and in the voyages and the years that followed, he grew into a fine young man, a Journeyman of the sea, and a good luck talisman for all Captain Arrow's crew and his own many ventures.

But the time soon came when he would have to move on from being a Protege and a crewman on such legitimate trade. He craved more. He sought out and joined a ship bound for the Horn of Africa, smugglers and illegal slavers which taught him many lessons, both foul and good, about how to survive, how to hold your own, how to endure unimaginable cruelty and suffering. He soon despised the slave trade, and swore never again to trade in flesh, and to confine his criminality to robbing from the rich and the unworthy, those who grew fat off the labour of others.

Before long he found himself adrift from the simpler world he knew. By fate, by fortune, by cosmic happenstance, he found himself sailing not just the wild, chaotic seas of his youth, but the seas of distant, alien worlds. Maybe it was a random portal, maybe it was a divine wind, maybe it was his own sheer will to see what noone else had ever seen before, but soon he found himself longing to sail the very stars themselves.

So begins...

Silas brushed back his own hair, wondering if it was the whiskey or just another one of life's random happenstances that had thrown him into this place. Seeing a woman opposite him, he concluded it must be the whiskey.

"Lady, If you don't remember my name, that means we havent got to the good part yet." He smiles, revealing a suprisingly winning smile. Maybe this new place isnt so bad after all.

Silas blinks. "Feisty one, eh? Don't reckon I've seen barkers like them before." Looking around, he blinks, eyes adjusting to the sunlight. "Man, I've been drunk before, but never this drunk." "Crew? Girl, I'm Silas Quinn. Unless you're Mary Reid's Ghost, I think I should be the one asking why I don't remember you either." He snorted. "And there's been no storm lately, not that I can remember." He frowns, rubbing his head. "Can't remember much, truth be told."

Silas snorted. "Girl, I'm pretty well known around these parts." He frowned for a moment, wondering if he was even still in "these parts." "Well, at anyrate, I'm a big deal. Ask Anyone. Silas Quinn. Respectable Rum Merchant if you dont know me, something a bit less boring if you do." He considers wether he should try to draw his own flintlock, but eyeing the woman, he could see she was used to handling firearms. Best not to spook her.

Silas smiled. At last, getting somewhere. "Genevieve, thats a nice name. French, isnt it? Very nice, the french." The name didn't conjure anything instantly to mind, but he still felt a tad hungover. Regardless, she was clearly a cove of some kind, and one best not to be trifled with. "No funny business, on my honour as a god fearing christian man." He even crossed himself, to be sure. Not that he believed in God or the Devil. But it sometimes impressed people, so why not?

Silas looked around, taking in the suprisingly bright and verdant fields. Didn't look like anywhere he was familiar with. Almost reminded him of England, in some ways. "Can't say I do, miss Genevieve." He lowered his hands, relaxing now that she had lowered the gun.

He strained his eyes, to see if there was any sea or coast on the horizon. It didn't look like it. Was he dreaming? He pinched himself, to be sure. Wincing in pain, he concluded this was definitely reality.

"I don't suppose a fine lady such as yourself has any idea where we are to begin with?"

Silas looked. "Well, that direction's as good as any other. Maybe we can get some elevation and scope the lie of the landscape?" He began moving immediately in the direction she had pointed out, not waiting for her to catch up. Best to take charge, and seem like he knew what he was doing. Ladies tended to like that. Confidence, that was the secret. Though as for the more pressing concern of figuring out wether he was in trouble or not, well, he was Silas Quinn. Passing up an opportunity to impress a lady, especially an attractive one, even if he was stranded in the middle of nowhere with no clue if he was going to survive the next few days or not, was simply not something he could do, no sir.

"So, Miss, or perhaps Mistress if you prefer, what exactly -is- the last thing you can remember?" He called back, not slowing his pace.

He smiled. A challenge, perhaps? "Very well, Captain, you lead the way." His eyes flashed with mirth. Every move she made could be made to seem like a victory for him, with the right tone. Let her tire herself out hacking the reeds clear for him. Plus she would begin to grow hot, and sweaty, and frustrated, and his words could slide ever more effortlessly under her armour, so to speak.

"Well, Mistress Captain, Last thing I can remember is consuming far too much of someone's- that is to say, my- whiskey, and passing out in a calm night, probably in a Port Royal boozing den. Not the first time i've woken up in strange lands after a fine night of fun, I can tell you! But, first time I've had a face as lovely as yours to wake up next to, no mistake." He flashed another wicked smile, carefully picking his way through the chopped reeds, following close behind her now.

Silas fell back, startled at her sudden temper. So, my words do have effect. He contained his desire to rub his hands with glee. Rage was a reaction of one kind, something he could work with. Her blushes, if blushes they were, suggested she was not used to this kind of attention. Interesting.

He barely noticed the strange hissing of the reeds as she cut through them, his thoughts occupied with both how to win this fairfaced and capable woman over, and also with idle thoughts about where exactly he could be, or how to get from here to somewhere more comfortable, preferably with this wench in tow.

"Horrid? Dead, eh? Sounds like you've been hanging out with rough rapscallions alright. I assure you, I am nothing of the sort." He lied boldly. "I've seen some strange sights, Mistress Captain. Dead Men aren't the strangest. Though waking up in a verdant field like nowhere in the West Indies i've ever seen.." He paused, a strange note of doubt entering his tone. It was a very odd place to wake up, indeed.

"We're nearly at the rock there. Strange, I thought a place as lively as this would have more birds. Well, present lovely company excepted, of course." He chuckled.

"Well, If you wants to shimmy your fine self through that tight gap, I'd be happy to follow close behind." He leaned in close, on the pretence of looking closer at the crack, though taking care not to brush against her...just yet. "Going forward seems easier than going up, leastways." He fancied himself a good climber, but without rope he might aswell be an untrained landsman. "If things get too narrow I can always pull you back out."

Following close behind Genevieve, Silas looks around at the cavern in silent awe. Either hes still drunk, dreaming, or he's really found himself on Stranger shores this time. "This is even more amazing than the time those Oriental twins were in that brothel...I mean, ah, uh, Captain, any idea where we go from here?"

Distracted for once from trying to simply hit on Genevieve, at least for the time being, Silas allowed his natural curiousity to take over, and he approached the falling particles, trying to catch them, and frowning when it seemed he failed. "Weirdness indeed..." He breathed. "Ever seen St.Elmo's Fire? Sometimes, when you're far north or far south in remote waters, it seems like your mast is on fire, but its just an illusion..." He pondered, awed by the cavern's mystery.

"Wonder if there's a way out somewhere? Keep close, Genny, wouldn't want you gettin lost in this darkness now." He flipped her a sly wink, as he walked further into the darkness, hands outreached with care.

Silas focused, following the trail of her hand. "Yes. We should probably head towards the light, but carefully now. Might be an Anglerfish." He chuckled weakly, but his joke didnt seem so funny in this strange, eerie darkness. He shuddered at the mental image of vast jaws looming out of the darkness. No. Not funny at all.

He kept his hand close to his sword, this time, ready to draw it at a moment's notice. Instinctively, he found himself drawing closer to Genevieve, and placing himself in front of her. He was a rogue, it was true, but some habits- such as protecting a lady- were hard to shake.

Silas gaped in astonished horror at the visage before him. He then let stream a series of curses and oaths so foul and coarse that if the air wasnt already blue it would have turned it.

"What in the thunderin' seven hells is that?" He fumbled for his pistols, concealed beneath his jacket, wondering if Genevieve would do the same. Satan's balls, he sure hoped he was dreaming this...

"Stay back now, y'hear! We're fearsome pirates and mighty pirates!"
