Gabby's eyes widened. She reached for her hood and pulled it sharply back, revealing soft features and wide, albeit a bit swollen brown eyes. "I didn't mean it!" she half-shouted, clapping her hands over her mouth and standing stock-still. She wasn't very tall, or intimidating. She was just as nervous as Sky was, in that moment.

"I was just walking and you surprised me." she said through her fingers, taking another step back. "Then I saw the wings and thought they were neat, then the needle and, well, not so much, um..."

She looked him over, her brow furrowing beneath dark bangs.

"God are you okay? I really didn't mean to startle you..."

She should have walked away, really, but she didn't She never did. She saw this kid, and immediately thought of Casper.

Sky's breathing levelled out slightly as he realised that this girl wasn't about to attack him. It stayed unhealthily short, though, and he coughed raspingly into one hand as he tried to regain himself. "I'm fine!" he managed to spit out after a moment, letting out an uncomfortable laugh. "Ahaha, absolutely fine! Nothing to worry about here, nuh uh!"

Sky ran a hand over his forehead and through his hair, blinking as a brief hot flush came over him. The elysium was kicking his ass when it came to keeping himself together with regard to both appearances and thought.

He managed a bleary, half-hearted grin that cracked after a few seconds as he doubled over coughing. From his bent over position he lifted one hand, waving dismissively and giving another muffled call of "Honestly, fine, don't let-" cough, splutter "-appearances fool you!"

She took a few steps forward, her expression unreadable for the moment. As she came closer on quiet steps, during his coughing spells, her eyes trailed towards the syringe that had fallen to the ground. Her brow knit.

"Is that stuff making you cough like that?" she asked, grimacing slightly. She didn't know what it was that kids did these days. It had been a little while since she'd been on the streets herself.

"You sure you don't need to see someone?"

"No, no," Sky shook his head, "It's just a cough, chest bug, nothing big!" He was still spitting his words out like they were overflowing from his mouth. The half-angel straightened, following the woman's eyes to the discarded syringe.

Wringing his hands nervously, he shook his head again. "Yeah! I'm fine, that's just- that's nothing, you know? Not important." He self-consciously tugged his sleeves down to cover his forearms, despite it no doubt being too late to stop the woman seeing the prevalence of needle-marks. Sky cleared his throat and managed to briefly meet Gabby's eyes with his own bloodshot brown orbs. "I'm sure- I've got things in hand, don't worry! I'm just a stranger, anyway, what do you care?"

He laughed again, despite the awkward inappropriateness of the moment for it. "I'm just some kid, right?"

Gabby hesitated for a moment, before she lifted her arm and pulled down the sleeve of her hoodie. Not just needle marks, but old scars and track-marks made obvious, dark lines against her pale skin. She was still watching Sky curiously.

"I don't know about being just...'some kid'. And...I guess I do care, in a way. I care cuz I kinda know where you're coming from, and I care because you don't."

She bent down to pick up the needle, then sat down on the bench.

"You don't have to be scared of me, y'know. I'm not going to bite, and I'm not going to judge either. You can chill out."

Sky's eyes dropped to the woman's arm for a few brief moments, registering the significance of it as she spoke. He let out a long sigh, running both hands through his hair and pacing off briefly to the side just past the end of the bench, screwing his eyes shut for a few moments.

"Look, I don't need a lecture or storytime or-" the half-angel spun around to pace back to the other end of the seat. "Or anything like that, I don't need help, I'm fine, I've got things under control!"

The sad thing was, Sky was still deluded enough to actually believe that. His eyes snapped downwards when Gabby picked up the syringe, "Wait! You're not a mage or a witch or anything like that, right? If you are leave that the fuck alone- it's- it'll kill you." He shook his head, groaning.

"Course you 'aren't going to judge', nobody says they're gonna do they?" he muttered, evidently doing anything but chilling out.

"You usually talk this much?" Gabby asked, perking a brow (the one that wasn't split with healing stitches).

She held up the syringe, her brow furrowing a little as she looked it over. "Why would this kill me? I'm not a mage or anything. What's it supposed to do?"

She glanced sideways at him. Maybe it just made people freak the fuck out, like crack, or LSD...

Sky continued to pace as he spoke, the overflow of energy from the drug making him twitchy and unable to tolerate staying still for long. "Yeah, I'm a talker, always have been." he mumbled, "Friends always said I'd be great in politics for all the running my mouth I do!" He laughed again, that slightly shaky half-smile returning to his face for a few short moments.

He looked down at the syringe again, shaking her head. "It's called elysium, makes magical people explode. Else it's just an awesome buzz, most intense high..."

He cut off with a shake of his head. "But whatever, that's not important." Sky stopped in his pacing to look down at Gabby uncomfortably. "What's your angle anyway, so you used to take stuff, that's not a lot in common. What did 'and you don't know where you're coming from' mean anyway?"

"I said 'I know where you're coming from'." she replied, gesturing to him, as if to encompass the entirety of the situation. "And I don't have an angle. Someone busted in my head the other day, so I don't think I've got enough brain power to be double-faced." She managed a wry smile.

"I guess I just saw you and wanted to make sure you didn't hurt yourself." She looked to the wings on his back, her eyes rounding a little.

"Your wings are pretty, too," she added as a side note. Something about them rang with familiarity. "I'd guess you were an angel of some sort, but it's stupid to assume anything nowadays."

Sky sighed heavily, almost going to sit down but turning at the last second to pace away again. He flexed his wings self-consciously as they were mentioned, wincing slightly - they'd seen better days both as far as appearance and general health went. He was pretty sure he'd sprained a muscle or... something the last time he'd been kicked onto his back in the dirt, but if he went to get it checked out...

He shook his head. "Half." he muttered, "Half angel. I'm just a human with mostly useless wings, they can't even properly carry me," he laughed, "I'm like a fucking flightless bird, angel dodo, haha."

His laugh was cut off by another hoarse, throaty coughing fit.

While he talked, she thought. So she had suspected that the Elysium business was dying, since Detective Kaye had gone about to destroy just about every factory making it within city limits. She wanted to ask where he got it, but something, perhaps a desire to keep him off of the defensive, kept her from doing that.

She drew her knees up to her chest and watched him walk, her eyes mostly focussed on his wings.

"What other angelic things can you do? I don't know what it means to be half...other than the obvious. The feathers the only thing you carry as a trait?"

She tilted her head to one side, realizing vaguely that she hadn't introduced herself yet. That would come.

"Fuck all," Sky threw up his hands with a grimace as he cleared his throat. "That's what. That's what wonderfully useful talents I have from my fuckin' special holy heritage." The youth shook his head, idly brushing the tips of his fingers on one hand against a wing.

"I don't know shit about my dad or his people, soooo... yeah, as far as I'm concerned I just stick out like a sore thumb in a crowd and that's all he's given me." A dry grin crossed his face briefly, followed by a laugh. "That said, some people dig the wings."

He spread his arms, "Maybe there's some more weird stuff that I just don't know about yet, just waiting to find an awkward moment to rear it's head and shout 'Surprise!' as I, I dunno, catch fire from sin or something."

"Considering you were shooting up and you didn't burst into flames, I doubt that's going to happen." she told him a little dryly, gazing up at him as she rested her chin on her folded arms.

"What's your name, angel-boy?" she asked. Oddly enough, the request was kind, even if it seemed like she was teasing him.

Sky laughed, shaking his head and muttering something incoherent under his breath. He gripped his jacket sleeves, biting his lip. Should he tell her his name? Eh, why not.

"I'm Sky." he said, glancing around at her. "And don't call me angel-boy, like everyone does that and it was novel the first few hundred times but now it's totally wearing thin." He took a breath, remembering to punctuate rather than just vomit all his words out at once.

"What about you, random stranger who has taken an interest in my apparent lack of wellbeing?"

"This random stranger's name is Gabby, or Gabriella, or Gabs." She rested her cheek on her knee, offering him a slightly squished smile.

"I do like your name. It...suits you." She giggled. "And I promise I won't call you angel-boy anymore, especially since we're on first name basis now."

She sighed, looking almost tired, and reached a hand to gently touch at the stitches on her brow.

"Just out of curiosity, do you have a place to go? This place is scary after dark."

"Everyone says that too," Sky rolled his eyes half-heartedly, "I guess my mom didn't know the meaning of cliché." He scowled faintly at the mention of his mother, but mentally moved on before more than a moment had passed.

"Yeah, I have a place. I share a flat with some others... sorta." If squatting in an abandoned house with a roomful of druggies counted as 'having a place', then that was totally true. The awkward way he looked to the side gave away that he wasn't telling the whole truth there.

"Mhm." she looked dubious, her brow knitted, but she said nothing further. "That's good, in any case. You'll be heading back there soon?"

Once the high wore off. She'd considered inviting him back to her place, but she didn't know how Casey would feel if she dragged him into the house. Not only had she sneaked out, but, well, the kid was an Elysium addict. That was no small thing.

"Yeah, I was gonna head there now, like, after I-" Sky coughed awkwardly, "You know. I was on my way before I got sidetracked, I needed to..."

He shook his head, abandoning that thread of explanation before it started sounding too bad. "Anyway, yeah, I'll be heading back soon. Soon like whenever we're done here, I mean, not that I'm rushing you or anything, because-"

He trailed off for a second time, cursing under his breath as he flailed for words.

"Nah, I get it." Gabby replied, nodding to herself and unfolding. She stood to her feet, looking after Sky for a moment before stretching her arms over her head.

"I won't keep you." she promised. "I do hope to see you again, sometime. Maybe not when you're doing...that." she gestured to the syringe.

"Maybe you could come by and meet some of my friends. Everyone could use more of them."

Better friends. Friends who didn't use. People who could make a difference.

"Besides, my mom's going to kill me if she finds out I sneaked out. I'm on probation after this happened." she gestured to the side of her face.

Sky seemed to take in the implications of the swelling on Gabby's face for the first time, eyes widening slightly as he nodded his head. "Uh, sure!" he said, running a hand through his hair, "Why not? Not like I do anything with my time! I mean, nothing important. No job, no school, just one hundred percent me time!"

One hundred percent elysium time, more like. He was either using or trying to scrounge money to be able to afford more. He hadn't been able to hold down a job for more than a week at a time, and now people just wouldn't look twice at him for the way he took care of himself.

He opened his mouth to speak again only for a brief coughing fit to interrupt him. "Fucking..." he cursed to himself as it ended before he went on. "I hope your mom doesn't find out, and yeah, maybe we'll see each other again." He didn't make any guarantees about the elysium. He was at least somewhat aware that he didn't have the level of control necessary to guarantee that. Nor did he immediately offer a way for her to meet or contact him, but whether that was out of simply a lack of thought or deliberate evasiveness was anyone's guess.
