Sky didn't need telling twice. Swallowing his pride, swallowing the feeling of horror steadily building in his gut at what he'd just agreed to, he took his drug and he was out of the shack in seconds, without a word.

He couldn't get high fast enough. He needed something to lift him up, something to make him feel like he hadn't just made the biggest mistake of his life.

Something to keep reality at bay.

As the boy left the building, Hawley called behind him.

"Saturday at seven. Be here, swan queen."

"I'd beg to differ." she said softly, but she certainly didn't push the issue. She understood, probably more than he knew, that the addiction was always the problem. It started with that, and then it was closely accompanied by the money problems.

She wanted to give him a hug, but she relented, figuring the last thing the young man wanted was someone else's pity. Even if she knew that wasn't what she was trying to get across...she knew it was received that way. It was typically how she received such gestures.

"You know," she said quietly, "If you ever feel like you don't have anywhere to turn...my mom's a really good person to talk to. If you need or want help, or just...I dont' know. I was a user when she met me, and so was Casper."

She shrugged, keeping her eyes away from him.

"Helps if you ever think about quitting. You'd have support, and protection."

Sky shrugged his shoulders. On some level, some part of him knew that Gabby was right. But that was a very small part. Quiet, easily quashed. So he'd stolen from his mother even while she was paying to try and save him. So he'd thrown her kindness back in her face by bringing gangs down on her home, parties, violence...

The half-angel bit his lip, looking away. "I had support and protection then, too. Look, I don't wanna bring your family trouble. You're clean, now, right? You don't need me bringing angry debtors and drug abuse back into your wonderful life."

That had sounded more bitter than he'd intended.

He sighed, "Sorry, I didn't mean to- You know. But I mean it, you don't need me fucking things up for you, yeah?" He flashed an almost charming smile, "I'm alright. I get by, have done for a while now. I've already ruined one person's life."

She half-smiled.

"If it helps, you being around wouldn't bring us more trouble than we've already got. Mom's got two gangs and a whole galactic government power hanging over her head. She's uh...she's missing right now, but we're powering through that." Her smile wavered for a moment.

"Casper's got a crazy druggie debtor looking for him, and I got the Irish and some psycho murderer looking for me. So..." she shrugged sheepishly.

"We're a family with quirks. You'd fit right in."

"Wow," Sky couldn't help but stare at that description. "That's uh. A lot."

Something clicked in his head.

"Wait, the Irish?" he asked, hesitating. "The... Casey Mob Irish? They're... they're the ones I owe money to."

A lot of money. Money that he was never going to be able to repay. Thousands and thousands... he'd been able to blag with them to begin with because of how reliable he'd been in the past, how free with his mother's money he'd been. It took them a while to realise the cash he was promising them didn't exist, that there wasn't going to be another opportunity to grab his mother's card again any time soon. The half-angel glanced over his shoulder nervously at the very mention of their name, as though it might summon them.

"Eeehh..." he folded his arms, "Maybe. If you guys are already in all of that I guess I can't make it worse. But I'm not... are they gonna be all over me about... you know, stopping? 'cause I'm not ..." Not what? Not interested? He couldn't just say that. Was it true? Maybe. But he couldn't just say it.

"That's not on the table, right now." he settled with.

"Casey's pretty understanding." Gabby told him quietly. "I mean, I don't think she'd let you just be using in the house, y'know? But, if and when you're done doing what you want to do and you just need a place to sleep at night that isn't...wherever you go, you can come back. To a home."

She looked over to him, her expression gentle and inviting.

"It was all I needed, at the time. I think it saved my life."

Sky met Gabby's eyes with his own, wary hazel orbs and for that brief moment the boy that had stopped growing up at sixteen was visible through all the layers of self-assurance, glib-words and barriers against the world. It was a boy that was weak, vulnerable, and completely and totally lost.

The moment of openness was gone a second later, the rough edges and caution returning to swallow it. "I dunno, Gabby..." he mumbled, looking down.

It did sound nice. It was just like crashing at a friend's place, right? He'd done that for a while when his mom kicked him out until the patience of all his old schoolfriends had run out. This would be no different, he expected, even the kindest of people would probably eventually be sick of the way he didn't change... but for a while, at least, he'd have somewhere better than that dingy apartment and its lack of water, heating or electricity.

"Alright." he finally said, "If you think it'll be alright..."

"Not just alright." she said with a small smile, "..but a good thing. Good for you, better for you anyway."

She looped her arm through his, uncaring for their tentative acquaintance status, and spun him around so they could start marching in the opposite direction.

"We're all a little crazy right now, I'm afraid. Since Casey disappeared we're...well, making it but it's been stressful. I dunno." she shrugged.

"Thanks for saying yes, Sky."

A white van pulled into Sky's path, two suited men standing atop it reaching out to grab the angel. Most normal people would just call his name, ask him to stop or something.

Not these people. They weren't normal. They were gangsters, thugs, common criminals with Irish accents and a skewed sense of honor.

The men would attempt to pull Sky downwards as the van doors on the side slid open, more men reaching up to pull Sky inside.

"What the fu-" Sky's eyes widened as the van bearing two riders came up in front of him, flapping his wings hastily to try and swerve aside. It wasn't to be, however, as one of the men grabbed his leg and tugged, yanking him from the air.

His wings flapped in a panic, but they were too small to so much as lift the other man onto tip-toes. The undersized appendages barely bore his own weight, and so he had no chance of escaping the pull as he was unceremoniously dumped onto the floor of the van.

Oh, shit. Fuck shit fuck fuck shit.

Could this week get any worse?

"Hello there." Liam said as the van doors closed, "You've bene a bad boy." The Irishman told Sky as the van began to speed off. That was, technically, a kidnapping, people were surely calling the police about it.

Another Irish gangster pulled a switchblade from his pocket, he held at his side as he watched Sky. It was obvious that the plan was to stab, cut and kill Sky if he got out of hand.

"What's this about the angel boy buyin' from other people?" Liam asked, "What's this about the angel boy owin' us a ton of fuckin' money?" The Irish gangster asked, raising an eyebrow.

"It don't look good on us if we let people like you, fuckin' junkies, do whatever you want."

Sky edged back along the floor of the van as far as he could, pressing back up against the wall of it. "I- I haven't been buying from anyone else!" he stammered. Despite his fearfully wide-eyed expression and the obvious signs of a high, there were no tells of lying when Sky said that.

Because, technically, it was the truth. No money was changing hands. The half-angel bit his lip. "I just got a ... gift from someone." Also true, technically.

"I have money!" he managed to finally spit out, "It's not much, but it's all I have! I'm trying, I'm really trying!" His hands went to his pockets and pulled out a crumpled wad of notes coming to around two-hundred dollars. "I'll get the rest to you, I just need time!"

Of course, the amount Sky owed the Irish was significant. After several months of being a reliable customer - the rich kid with access to mommy's bank card - he'd been able to blag for several weeks with promises that he'd be able to get hold of her card again soon. But then the fact that he'd been kicked out and mother dearest's plentiful funds were no longer at his fingertips had been uncovered.

Liam reached out to snatch the money, taking his time as he counted the bills. "Who gave you a gift and why?" The Irish gangster asked Sky, "Another junkie? Some poof you're gettin' money from?"

"I hear the stories, you junkies need more and more money, you become bent. You a bender, boy?" Liam asked, "Don't answer, I don't want to hear it. Don't care how you get me money as long as me money is got." Liam said firmly.

"Put you hand down flat, boy."

Sky bit back an angry retort, but the truth was the Irishman's words cut far too close to home. Far, far too close.

Hawley was a sick bastard.

Eyes still on the blade in Liam's hand, Sky hesitantly extended his own palm out on the floor of the vehicle. He was shaking, and a drop of blood had formed on his lip where he was biting down.

"The money was from some girl in Gambit's," he mumbled, "Can't even remember her name. I just asked her and she gave me it. The stuff was from an old friend who doesn't live 'round here."

Liam reached out to grab Sky's fingers, "Next time..." He began, "I'll be cutting one off. Another the next week. And so on until my money is where it should be, in my pocket." The Irishman said, attempting to snap one of Sky's fingers.

"With interest, boy."

Sky shrieked in pain as a finger was broken, tears forming in his eyes that he fiercely fought back. "Okay! Fuck! Let go!" he yelled shakily, trying to pull his hand back.

How the hell was he going to get that money? A finger every week? Fuck, fuck, fuck.

He had an answer to his question now. Yes, this week could, and just had, gotten worse.

The van came to a sudden stop as Liam let Sky go, not resisting as the young man pulled his hand away. "Get out." Liam said simply, "I don't care what you have to do. Steal from old people, kill people, become a gigolo."

"I want me fuckin' money! There's a pub on Main, it's very Irish, not hard to miss. Come there when you have my money. Some of it at least. If I like what you bring, I'll let you keep a finger."

Sky didn't wait for Liam to finish speaking before he was scrambling out of the van, but he caught the end of his sentence before his wings got purchase and he fled into the air, clutching his hand.

What the hell was he going to do now? He didn't know how to get hold of that kind of money on that short notice!

The half-angel was so out of his depth it was hard to believe that he'd lasted this long.
