Proprietor of a several prominent nightclubs in Caprica City, Sonja is both a strong and successful business woman.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Ruanzilla

Description

Sonja

ImageName: Sonja Petralia
Age: 28
Sex: Female
Race: Human, Aschen
Ethnicity: Gemenon
Height: 5'9
Weight: 128lbs
Place of Birth: Gemenon, Illumini
Place of Residence: Caprica, Caprica City
Religion: Kobollian

Born to an average middleclass family, Sonja had a relatively uneventful upbringing. After putting herself through college, Sonja later relocated to Caprica City in pursuit of a lucrative job opportunity. Seven years later Sonja has made a name for herself in the business world as both strong and willful. With a strong willingness to protect her investments, Sonja is now the proprietor of several prominent nightclubs throughout Caprica City.

Sonja's marked success in the business world comes from a like of traveling, and Sonja makes a point of traveling abroad several times a year. Sonja is well noted for the foreign influences that she brings back from her travels to incorporate into the aesthetics of her clubs. While this has given them an exotic flair among the locals of Caprica City, it has at times stirred controversy among the more notably xenophobic critics.

So begins...

Sonja strode into Vogel's bar with her phone in hand as she was flipping through her appointment listings. With efforts to return to Langara having landed her back on Terra once more she found herself with a lot of free time on her hands. She wasn't used to it. She was a woman of business and if she wasn't rushing to meetings, or handling finances, or juggling appointments, she felt restless.

She flipped her phone closed and returned it to her handbag before ordering a glass of ambrosia from the bar tender. With her past experiences with Wing City, the Aschen woman had largely taken to keeping to the Palace and the Aschen districts of the city.

The general atmosphere of the city seemed to have eased into a state of general neutrality for the time being, but she was eager to be home. She should have been back on Langara months ago.

She set her handbag down on the bartop and seated herself on one of the available stools while her drink was being poured for her. Taking the glass in hand she sipped it lightly.

Suddenly, a sloppy-looking man slammed open the door to the bar.
"Hello, lassies."
He then strode over to the counter, demanding "the strongest drink in the house" from the bartender.
"That would be the 'Banger', sir."
"2 of 'em."
"I do hope you know that 2 is well over the legal driving limit, sir."
"Ehh, i'll just sleep it off. There's plenty of hotels here."
"Yes, that'll be 15 dolle-" "Shut up and take my money already!"

It wasn't just politicians that turned out for the charity event, and in fact the majority of the people filling out the building were middle class citizens with an interest in helping to make their city a better place.

Among them was Sharlene Johnson, a local elementary school teacher of about thirty years of age. Her husband, Daniel, was working today, and she had left their children with a babysitter for the afternoon so that she could volunteer to help out here where she was currently engaged in light conversation with Sonja Petralia, an Aschen business woman.

"Terra is quite a ways from Langara," Sharlene told her.

"Very," Sonja replied with a knowing smile.

"Do you plan to go back?" Sharlene asked.

"As soon as the grace of the gods allow it," Sonja replied with mock exasperation. "No offense intended," she added as she lay a hand lightly on Sharlene's forearm to alleviate any such thoughts. "It's just that I've been here months longer than I had intended."

Sonja lived a busy life, and work wasn't holding up for her. As it was, she had scarcely been able to partake in casual conversation without checking her phone as she received various messages. She had politely declined to answer them for the moment, but the latest drew a sigh from her lips.

"I'm sorry," Sonja explained. "But I need to take this one."

Sharlene shook her head. "Please, go on. And do enjoy yourself."

As Sharlene moved off, Sonja flipped the phone open.

"Yeah, I'm here. Where are you?" she asked. She paused as whoever was on the other line spoke. Whatever they were telling her brought another sigh to her lips as she brought a hand to her brow. "It was you who asked me to be here -" she was cut off and a crease of irritation found its way to the corners of her eyes. "Look, either find a way to get here, or don't come calling again later."

She hung up.

Once Mollem had made his way to his table, a chair was promptly pulled out for him by one of the agents.

Slowly he lowered himself down into the table while he observed his surroundings, Aiyanna hard at work coordinating security and monitoring electronic communications in and out of the building. So far she didn't come across anything noteworthy.

Once Mollem was in his seat, he looked at the faces of people attending, leaning over towards one of his Confessors, an older man with short white hair seated adjacent from the Aschen Emperor.

"Terrans, I find them detestable, There's someone from the Varden here too, wretched curs, think they own the place." Mollem whispered, and the Confessor nodded. "...and the Invictus..."

"They will be of no consequence, Divine Shadow." Kesslee whispered back. "Though, there's an Aschen here, Sonja Petralia." He added, gesturing to the businesswoman. "I'd like to find out why she is here."

Sonja hadn't taken notice of the confessor's attention, or of Mollem. With so many people gathered it was easy to miss them in the crowds, even if their table was kept relatively clear of people passing too close. She put her phone back in her hand bag and sighed. She was sorely tempted to just head out since she didn't know anyone here - or at least she assumed she didn't as she hadn't yet spotted Phinx.

A voice seemed to echo from the table adjacent to Sonja.

Kesslee wasn't clad in typical confessor cabal attire, but his attitude and demeanor, as well as the small spiral emblem shaped pin on his lapel.

"Hello, Sonja." The figure said.

Sonja hadn't been sitting, and she started a bit at Kesslee's voice. It wasn't the man specifically that was familiar to her, but rather the emblem pinned to his lapel that had caused her the moment of alarm.

She was a loyal Aschen citizen, and she paid her taxes, stayed out of trouble. She had little to fear from the law. Unfortunately everyone had something to fear from the confessors.

Her surprise at encountering a confessor here of all places had taken her words from her and it took her a moment to regain her composure enough to utter her response.

"I worship His Shadow," she replied hurriedly.

A few people passing close enough to overhear the words threw a few uneasy - or in some cases scathing glances - before moving along. She could blend well enough normally - but her words identified her openly as a loyal Aschen Imperialist.

"How might I serve His Shadow?" she asked.

A confessor didn't speak to you unless he wanted something, and she was quick to establish her cooperation. Their reputation for brutality and for throwing around Hersey charges was enough to unsettle even loyal Aschen citizens.

Kesslee brought his arm to his chest, hand flat and slowly outwards in a slight salute.

"I worship his shadow." He said calmly, the exchange making people visibly uneasy. The Confessor cast a sidelong glance to Mollem himself, the man sitting at the head of his table.

"Intriguing that I would find a Citizen of the Empire this far out, in a Terran Government fundraiser of all places." The Confessor said. "His Shadow shares my sentiment." The Confessor added, looking up at the Terran Politicians.

"I hope your time on Terra hasn't... tainted your sensibilities." The Confessor added as he placed his hand on Sonja's arm.

Indeed the Confessor didn't speak to you unless he wanted something, even more-so if the Divine Shadow himself takes an interest in you.

Sonja's surprise only grew as Kesslee drew her attention to Mollem of all people. The Divine Shadow, here? Without his usual garb she had overlooked him initially as the confessor had claimed her focus, but with recognition dawning over her she quickly moved to amend her error.

She murmured an apology as she once more professed her loyalty to the Emperor, this time bowing her head respectfully to Mollem.

"My sensibilities are where they have always been," she told Kesslee.

His hand on her arm left her skin crawling, but she didn't dare pull it away.

"I came to Terra on business," she explained. "And this place... I was simply meeting an -" she hesitated a moment. "An acquaintance."

Her hesitation which might have been misconstrued as deception was more personal uncertainty in how to define the matter.

"You've come to Terra on business?" The Confessor said, slowly releasing the woman. "We all sometimes come to Terra on business, tell me of this acquaintance." The Confessor said, gesturing for Sonja to join them at the table where Mollem sat.

Slowly, the Confessor guided the woman over to the table. Slender fingers pulling a chair back for the woman to sit down.

"We're here to observe this new political climate. His Shadow is eager to determine what competition to eliminate."

Sonja took the indicated seat. She was unnerved, but knew better than to take the confessor's gesture as a request that could be declined.

"He was just a local photographer," she explained. "No one of consequence."

Personal relations with a Terran - however fleeting they might be as was hinted by her usage of the past tense - weren't strictly illegal, but likely wouldn't sit well with the confessors. She threw a glance in Mollem's direction.

There were certainly more than a few rumors floating around the Empire as to Mollem's own... indulgences with Terrans, but none that she would dare utter aloud lest she be charged with heresy. Still though, he might have sympathy where the confessor would likely not.

Mollem himself remained silent while the Confessor continued his line of questioning. Kesslee was well known for his tactics, but of course it was unlikely Sonja would know of Kesslee specifically, being that he was a high profile confessor, and generally shrouded in secrecy.

"A local photographer..." Kesslee said, turning to Mollem who continued to say nothing, and then Kesslee turned back to Sonja.

"Tell me... what purpose is a Terran Photographer going to serve?" The Confessor asked, until Mollem raised his hand slightly off the table, and the Confessor backed off.

"Terra is not a place for someone to stay for long periods of time. It would be prudent to come home, before something bad happened to you." Mollem finally said.

"Of course, Divine Shadow," she replied. "I intend to return to Langara by the end of the month." She very much wanted to excuse herself from the table, but one didn't simply excuse themself from an audience with the Divine Shadow. Though truthfully it was Kesslee that had her uncomfortable. The way he looked at her, the way he spoke to her. "Is there anything else I can do for you?" she asked, silently hoping Kesslee would simply say no and let her on her way.

Kesslee waved his hand in dismissal, and Mollem simply nodded silently.

Only after Sonja left would Mollem lean over towards his Confessor. "Keep an eye on her, if she's doing anything out of the ordinary, terminate her." He said silently, before he leaned back into his chair, offering a disarming smile.

Once away from the Confessor and Mollem, Sonja made for the entrance of the conference center at a brisk pace. She felt ill and her chest was tight. The confessor had thoroughly unnerved her and once she made it outside she placed her hands on a guard rail to catch some fresh air.

She must have looked as bad as she felt, because an officer moved a hand to her arm, asking her if she was alright.

She nodded.

"I'm fine, I just needed some air," she explained with a weak smile. "Thank you."

She adjusted her shoulder bag and headed down the stone steps. She didn't care to head back inside while that confessor was in there. He made her skin crawl, and she hadn't liked his interest in her. She hadn't broken any Aschen laws, but that didn't mean much where a confessor was concerned. They had a reputation for being able to make a man confess to anything, regardless of whether he was guilty or not. She would just as soon rather head back to her hotel, and put this whole matter behind her.

Sonja had made it back to her hotel without any further incident, but the encounter earlier that afternoon with the confessor was still on her mind as she closed the door and turned the lights on.

She threw her coat onto the couch and headed for the bathroom where she drew a bath. The warm water would be relaxing, and drive away the chill from walking back to her hotel in the cold. By the time she had finished and was towel drying her hair, she had all but forgotten about the confessor from earlier.

Dinner consisted of room service, but it sat untouched on a table while Sonja was going over some financial information. The damages to The Haven back in Caprica City last year had been extensive, and repairs were only just reaching completion. Fortunately the club had been insured.

It was the opening night of Azure Height's newest nightclub, Empyrea. Everything maintained a blue hue reminiscent of lunar or celestial lighting and it was outfitted with expensive equipment and aesthetic architecture. The proprietor of the club had withheld little expenses in its design and equipment.

Flashing lights lit up the dance floor, while overhead Sonja made her way down from a wide balcony that overlooked the club below. Her steps held a sway to them while music flooded the building and the evenings activities began to pick up. It was a risky business venture to have opened up a club here on Terra, where Aschen sentiments are far from stellar, but Sonja had good PR to back her, and a history of incorporating foreign and exotic cultural aspects in her Langaran clubs, so she was used to facing controversial reviews.

The local news was abuzz with it, everything from scathing racism to encouragement of cultural acceptance. Sonja paid it little mind, and tonight especially she put it from her mind as she was swiftly swept away by the energy of the building as she reached the ground floor of the club.

One length of the room was taken up by a sweeping bar counter and booths were situated about to give a place to sit and intermingle when not engaged in the dance floor. Dotting the room, and the balcony overhead were several VIP lounges as well, to allow for more private discussion.

All in all the place seemed in order Sonja noted approvingly.

"This is the place?" Shawn, the driver of the black Cadillac parked down from the club, asked. He turned his head to look into the backseat. There sat a woman with light brown skin, long black hair and a black pantsuit with a purple turtleneck beneath the suit's blazer. "Yeah." The woman said, leaning forward to get a look at the nightclub.

"You can pull up." She told Shawn, "You got it, Mary." Shawn responded, pulling the vehicle up to the front of the nightclub. He stepped out, shooing away the paparazzi and journalists trying to get a peak of who was inside the car. Many of them were hoping for big names, others for Aschen generals so they could tie the club to propaganda or some Aschen plot.

Instead they got Phinx Munroe, the co-head of the Incictus Paramilitary Company, as she got out of her vehicle. She smiled and waved at the cameras, but wasted no time getting to the club. She hated paparazzi with a passion.

"God. I can see the headlines now. Invictus in collusion with Aschen business owners to steal Terran business sector." Phinx joked

"Oh you can count on that," Sonja said as she overheard Phinx upon her entry into the club. "You should have seen this mornings headlines. I'm expecting the NPA to come searching the stores for nuclear weapons any time now," she jested lightly.

She seemed to be taking it all in good humor though.

"It's good to see you again though. I thought you would be back in Wing City?" she asked. "Did you want to join me for a drink?" she added with a gesture towards the lengthy bar counter.

"Yo! The only black Aschen I've ever seen!" Phinx called out to Sonja, "How've you been?" Phinx asked, approaching the woman. "I could take that drink." She added. Drinking was fun, and Phinx couldn't really do nightclubs unless she'd been drinking a little bit.

"The Invictus are a company, remember? We're scouting locations for a branch here and other personal ventures among our members. There's been talk of opening up a charter school. Not what I would have gone for, but..." She shrugged.

She gestured around the nightclub, "This is more my kind of business investment. Places for people to get drunk and give me their money."

Sonja laughed lightly at that one. She owned and operated night clubs for a living, but had never quite put it that way before.

"Well, that explains what you're doing in Asteria City," Sonja said as she signaled the nearest bar tender to get Phinx whatever she would like. "But not what brought you by here. Surely there's other establishments that won't land your face plastered all over the mornings headlines," she mused.

There was a light smile about her, and the surprise of running into Phinx here seemed a pleasant enough one. There were few people on Terra that she was acquainted with outside of a business level.

"Unless you're borrowing the paparazzi to do just that. I imagine there's easier ways for a woman such as yourself to get your face on the front pages of papers and magazines though."

Phinx raised her hand to the front of her face, moving it in a circular motion for a few seconds. "See this? This mug needs to be in magazines. Give them some life." Phinx joked.

"Besides, it's always a good idea for someone like me to get in the papers. Need to find a husband and settle down. Maybe have a few kids I'll never see because I'll be working. Or dead if some other random military decides to attack the Invictus." Phinx told Sonja, "It's happened a few times." She added to give her comment a little context.

She doubted Sonja heard the stories yet. Phinx wasn't drunk enough to tell them properly. Maybe by closing she'd have enough in her system to do them justice.

"Let me get a... scotch. Straight." Phinx told the bartender, "So, when can I rent this place out for a party or five, Sonja?"

"I imagine we can work something out," Sonja answered as she ordered her own drink, a virgin daiquiri. She was working after all.

"I oddly think I can relate. Between the traveling, and the repeatedly being shot at this past year..." she grimaced. "The last time I had any semblance of a relationship was when I was in Tauron for six months. And let me tell you, dating a Tauron and finding out he was with the Ha'la'tha was probably the highlight of my romantic blunders."

She took a sip of her drink once it was slid across the bar to her.

"I hope so. I've got to not only keep clients happy, but it helps morale ifmy people in the Invictus from the accountand and lawyers down to the guy whose only job is to change the tires on our cars can come out to places like this and have fun." Phinx said, swiping her drink from the counter when it was slid across the bar.

"Ha'la'tha? I heard about them. That's rough." She said, sipping her drink. "I don't think I've had it that bad. There's been a few would-be woman beaters, but I'm tough." The woman said, flexing one of her biceps. "Hard body, for real." She joked.

"It's scared men, and women, away though. Being tough. I got tough in prison, but something else entirely made me realize I had to be tough. That's probably a story for another time. You've got a club to run, I've got a bar to claim as my own."

"I look forward to it." Phinx told Sonja, "Me and my boy Shawn'll be hanging around. He's probably looking for a decent place to park right now." She said. Indeed Shawn was circling the block, looking for a place to park that wasn't taken up by cop cars, clubgoers, news vans, and vendors hoping to score some quick cash feeding the hungry and the drunk.

"It's a date." Phinx called out to Sonja, "Not a literal date, but you know."

It was late afternoon and Sonja had a few hours yet before she needed to head in to the Empyrea, and with Phinx back in the city , the pair had opted to meet up for lunch. It had become something of a regularity for them whenever Phinx was in the area.

Sonja's work kept her schedule too full for meeting many new non-work related acquaintances, and these occasional get-togethers with Phinx where something of an immense relief for the hectic business-woman. A few hours to talk, and to enjoy social frivolities.

The restaurant they had chosen today was only a few blocks from the Empyrea, and one which Sonja often frequented. It was a bit under her paygrade, but it was nearby, and the food was good and the staff friendly. The large television on the back wall also offered some idle entertainment for the nights she was dining by herself; though, today she wasn't paying it much mind and was seated with her back to it.

"How long do you plan to be in the city for?" Sonja asked as she sipped at a glass of water that had been set out for her while they perused the menus.
