Taekin

Tae is an odd, very naive creature from some point in the future. She is obsessed with the sun for some reason.

0 · 342 views · located in The Infinite Void

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by LaularuKyrumo

Description

One look at Taekin would be enough to tell she is not from this world. The best way to describe her would be to call her a floating head from space. While her face bears the bare minimum to pass as humanoid (two eyes, a nose, and a mouth), that's where the similarities end. For starters, her head is actually twice as wide as it is long, and curved very slightly upward. Her ears are rather catlike, pointed up on the sides of her head. She has a pair of wings on the back of her head that are more for decoration than actual flight--her kind levitate and float magically. While she can take on a humanoid form, it's more like growing limbs and a torso--her head remains the same. Her large, bright blue eyes shine intensely when she gets happy or excited, which tends to happen a lot. While she is very book-smart, especially in mechanics and chemistry, she is painfully naive and childlike in her behavior. She is fascinated immensely by the sun, especially during sunrise or sunset, and will often fly as close to the sun as she can to watch it rise or set.

Equipment

ARLAT 1.0 -- Augmented Reality Life-Assistance Tool Version 1.0. Right now it essentially consists of a pair of bionic, floating hands that allow Taekin to grab stuff. Pretty useful. As of now, there are no plans in the works for matching legs.

History

Taekin remembers almost nothing of her home world, not even its name. As far as she knows, she's always been on Earth. She was found as a child and raised by a kind old woman, who thought of her as some kind of alien cat. As she grew, she showed an abnormal aptitude for science of all sorts. She also remained very childlike in her behavior--she would often do whatever she saw people around her doing. One day, she saw a friend of hers playing a video game. So she decided to make her own. The first rendition turned out to be a powerful virtual reality engine that could replicate full immersion. Flash forward a couple years to Virtual Reality Pocket-Space Version 5.0 (VRPS5), her final project. The world she created existed in a tear in space-time, so it could occupy a tiny space and yet be an enormously large area, and one could spend hours in there and have little time pass in the "real world". Unfortunately, there were some bugs discovered on the first beta test. The world was unusually hostile, and tried to trap Taekin and her friends inside. She was able to heroically lead them out, at the cost of being trapped herself. Years passed before she finally found her way out, leaving her a shell of her former self and completely devoid of any social knowledge, with only a limited grasp on language. The portal dumped her out high in the sky just as the sun was rising. Mesmerized by the beautiful sight, one made even more amazing after having not seen or felt sunlight for several years, she became enraptured by the sight and fell in love with the sun.

So begins...

Whack whack whack whack whack whack whack.... The rapid, repeated rapping at the door would probably annoy the flusterhaugen out of anybody inside, but it wasn't intended to. The creature making the noises was simply trying to figure out, first, why there was something in the way, and then how to get past it. Her eyes dimmed as the floating orb slid a bit down the door, frowning.

As soon as Jack opened the door, Taekin rushed into the bar, speeding in like a fairy possessed. She wasn't sure what was going on, but knew that she could get inside if she just followed the other man. The secrets of doors could be researched later.

Flutterflutterflutter..... Okay, Taekin didn't exactly make that noise, but when someone looked at her, just floating there, it just seemed like she should be. Those tiny, decorative wings attached to a small body composed entirely of a head, they couldn't possibly hold her up without making that kind of sound. (Of course, they didn't; levitation was innate in her species.) Her bright, glowing eyes scanned around the place, trying to figure out... whatever they could figure out.

Taekin watched all of this in wonder, her eyes darting back and forth between the various patrons. She seemed most interested in the blushing werewolf with the cute accent. Her voice sounded sweet, though the accent made it tougher to tell anything of what she was saying. Taekin was not well-versed in language.

Taekin had a very similar reaction to Audrey, and she seemed to be even more silent than usual as she stared more, trying to figure out what the werewolf was. After all, most ordinary humans, who had never seen another type of intelligent creature in their lives, would be pretty bewildered--especially if they hadn't heard of werewolves before--and Taekin had never even seen a human before coming here! A werewolf was definitely new territory for her.

As Audrey whispered to the mage, Taekin slowly opened her mouth, as if testing out that it worked, before starting to speak. It sounded like she was talking for the first time. "T... Tae...."

Taekin kept staring at Drey, wondering if she could get the werewolf to do something by watching it long enough...

Taekin fluttered inside, following Amber closely to make sure that the pesky door didn't keep her out again. Someone really should do something about it! Handles are very difficult to manipulate! Shaking her head (or head-like body, who could tell?), she floated in gently, slowly, looking around nervously. There seemed to be more people than usual...

Taekin glanced over at Amber and her eyes went wide in fear as she chugged the acid. No way that could be healthy! But when it was, she made a mental note not to get too close to the girl. Someone who drinks acid must have a very high pH. Not good to snuggle against. However, when Seth walked in, her gaze went straight to the floating orb. Somehow, it reminded her of home.... Wherever that was....

Taekin just blinked, the gears in her huge head trying to make sense of the verbose speech that Seth used. Her vocabulary was limited to begin with, so that would make this interaction even tougher. She continues to think on this for an extended moment, before finally turning a bit to the side, extending a wing towards the orb. She did not speak, though the gesture was clear.

Taekin blinked a few times, more and more puzzled. Stranger? Trait? Appropriately? All those big words and fancy conjugations were just a good way to get her lost. She interpreted the sentences as meaning something like "You have nice eyes, and you also belong to me. You are a stranger, which is something that will allow you to travel far if your home has certain qualities."

This was going to make communication interesting, to say the least. Taekin floated a few inches closer and started to open her mouth, trying to say something to Seth for the first time.

"Ssss.... Tran.... Ger?"

Taekin only grew more confused as Seth changed languages. And she was having a tough enough time trying to understand him speaking in Common! The orb's flash, though, got her mind wondering curiously. Was this magic? Or science? How did it work? She immediately began analyzing the wavelengths of the electromagnetic radiation emitted, running them through her banks of knowledge to see if she could find anything similar. It took her a few seconds to realize that she was being spoken to, especially because she could understand it... sort of. She had not used her "native" tongue in some time, due to having no recollection of her home... but it was significantly better than before. She nodded emphatically, her whole face beaming.

Taekin may have terrible language skills, almost nonexistent social skills, but she was very in-tune with anything scientific. She was able to decipher the what of the pulse, but not the why; as the exact wavelength and frequency were unknown to her, she would not be able to replicate the effect on her own... at least not without some additional testing. She made a rather large mental note to herself to perform such tests later, in bold and all caps. At least she had a general area of where to start looking.

Name? What was a n--Oh, that's right, name. That thing you call somebody, everyone has them. What was hers? Her eyes dimmed again, as they did when she was thinking intensely. She was able to recall an old memory of herself, much younger, with a scrap of paper tied to her wing. It was probably her name, and it was what she was called by the person who raised her...

"Taekin! But most call me Tae."

Flunk... flunkflunkflunkflunk.... The sound coming from just outside the door to the bar could be recognized as someone trying to open the door, but having a terrible go of it. The fumbling noises stopped briefly, Taekin taking a moment to reevaluate her approach. A moment later.... Wham! Well, that didn't work either....

Taekin slid down the door a bit, frowning deeply. There were people on the other side of this door, but she could not manage to open it, as her body was ill-suited to the opening of doors. She turned her head a bit, watching Violet walk around the bar. Her eyes brightened a bit, forming an idea. Closing her eyes, she started to glow brightly, probably directing anyone's eyes towards the light if it was in their field of vision. When it cleared, Taekin had took on a more humanoid form, and set back to her task of trying to open the door. It was extremely evident that she was not used to this form, though, as she fumbled around with the handle for another twenty seconds before she finally grasped it with her clumsy hands, and managed to pull it open--and then promptly tripped and fell to the ground, releasing the door and letting it close again.

Taekin gradually stumbles back to her feet, shaking her head to try and shrug off the effects of falling. As soon as the door opened, though, she wasted no time reverting to her natural form and floated right inside, speeding in quickly to avoid getting locked out again. "Whew! Stupid doors, why did they have to be so hard to open? It's like they're trying to keep me out or somethin'"

Taptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptaptap.... It almost sounded like someone was knocking on the door, but whatever was doing the knocking was larger than a fist. It wasn't hitting very hard, though, so the noise was still rather quiet--though loud enough to get on someone's nerves if they didn't do something about the source...

The tapping noise continued, getting louder--almost like some small creature banging itself against the door. Whatever it was, it didn't seem like it could manage to open the door on its own--was it a lack of limbs? Perhaps height was an issue? Or maybe it just couldn't figure out how to get this contraption to work?

As Silus ran out, something went whizzing by his head, slipping barely into the bar before the door shut behind her. They should really install something like a doggy door, or perhaps one of those button-activated withdrawal gates. Anything but a door with a handle. Those were just the bane of Taekin's existence.

Taekin blinked a few times, her eyes wide with wonder as she took in the scene. Well, half wonder, and half nervous anxiety. Everybody here seemed to know at least somebody else, and were all off doing their own little things in the various corners of the establishment.... and most of them were drinking something that, quite honestly, qualified as poison. Taekin had never had an alcoholic beverage, and had no intention on trying--who knows what effect those chemicals could have on her unique biology? No, she was content to float on over to a chair, settling down like she saw other people doing.
