Tahira Ali

"We choose, and in so doing, we define ourselves. We are defined by our choices, though we may be remembered for the worst of them. But what choices we make, they will affect others. And perhaps given time, we may change in the eyes of others."

Tahira Ali stood outside, observing the building carefully. She heard the sounds of raised voices from within, the lights bright. She hesitated, and then opened the door, emerging to find a man with a sword standing by the counter. She moved away from him immediately, slipping around towards the side of the room.

Tahira Ali realized then, as the stench hit her, that this place was full of drinks and, perhaps, unsavory types, denizens unwelcome in the world at large. She hoped she would not be forced to order a drink. Her aunt would have approved. Their house was one of temperance. Appropriately, Tahira Ali had never tasted alcohol in her life. She waited by the far wall, in the hopes she could avoid unwanted attention.

Tahira Ali remained by the far wall, in the long lost hopes that any would approach her, or speak to her. Those who did, she found, either wanted obscene acts performed, or were frightened of her. They had seen the wanted posters, she supposed.

noticed, finally, that beside her was an old chair, empty, at a small table. She sunk into it, her hands in her lap, unwilling to approach another patron of this bar. Another man walked up to her, and opened his mouth to speak, but then he did not. "Peace be upon you," she said to Miki Koiguro. "What brings you here, this evening?"

nodded slowly with infinite patience. "To be certain of yourself--you are not of the Americans to be sure." For the Americans had searched for her for tens of years and she did not want to be found, not by them. "And you do not know of them, I hope." She looked once, to her left, and then fixed her eyes on Miki once more. Her eyes were pale grey, the expression blank, or so she had been told.

Tahira Ali looked down, then, suddenly tired. She wished she had not made that remark. But it was too late. The past cannot be changed, and she could not take it back. "My name is Tahira Ali," she said, her voice much less assertive. "And yours? How do you call yourself?" The young man before her seemed younger than twenty, with floppy brown hair. It reminded her of someone special. . .

She warmed at the smile, her gaze drifting back up to Miki's face. When she permitted herself to think on it, he seemed handsome. Attractive. But she was far too old for him, she knew, he younger than twenty, and she over fifty. "It is an honor to meet you, Miki Koiguro. An honor." She indicated the seat across from her. "Please, have a seat. Do not remain standing. It would not be proper." Her voice was soft, gravelly.

Even sitting, Miki towered at least the length of a ruler and half over her head. She looked at him, really looked at him, and for a moment, saw her younger self reflected in his face. Shy, uncertain, welcoming of any affection. Any. Of course, that was what had caused her downfall. . . She brushed the thought away, focusing once more on the man before her. "Miki Koiguro," she said, "are you going to order a drink?"

"Tahira is fine," she said. "I was only asking because. . . I do not drink. . . I wanted to know if you. . . if you drank." She felt awkward, saying that, especially now that Miki had called the bartender. It was strange to her. She lowered her gaze out of respect.

"Shukran jazelan," she said to Miki Koiguro, the Arabic slipping from her lips before she could think more of it. It should not have surprised her; the comfort of her native tongue was quite appealing. Especially, in this place she did not truly understand. "Thank you," she repeated in English. "Thank you, very much."

"Why have you come here, to this place?" The question was deliberate. She wanted to be sure of his intentions. If he was a bounty hunter, he could easily claim the reward on her head. Last time she checked, it was in excess of 20 million USD. 25 million, she thought, but was not sure. Miki Koruido, she hoped, with all her heart, was not among those who sought the reward against her.

She looked at the table rather than at Miki Koiguro. "I am sorry you are out of touch. An old friend of mine--the closest friend--with him, I have lost contact also. A great tragedy, Miki Koiguro. A great tragedy." She shook her head wistfully, then looked up at Miki again. "But you tell me. . . what of this friend brought you here?"

"If you have not seen her, then perhaps. But perhaps she simply has left already, or will come later. To be quick to presumption is to ensnare oneself." She tried to comfort Miki, who seemed distraught to her, but once again, she feared she had failed. Comforting others, particularly strangers, was not a skill easily gained. Here, she felt quite out of her own element. A bar was not a place for her. . .

She watched with mild interest as Miki removed his jacket. With luck, there was no weapon hidden inside it. She had encountered several over the years who had attempted her murder. . . or her capture. Each had hidden a weapon, a knife, a gun, somewhere on their person. And attacked her. After a moment, she realized that Miki was staring and so she looked up again, meeting his eyes. "With luck, Miki Koruigo, you will see her again." She, though, she thought it unlikely she would see her beloved anywhere but at the end of another gun.

"There is no one," she said, much too quickly, her eyes looking away. "No one," she repeated. "The only one. . . the only one I know of, that would be Natalie Schultz. She is an FBI agent, with a mission to find me. . . only me. But she is not here, I trust. I hope. . . I believe." Tahira Ali looked away, afraid, somehow, to face Miki's probing eyes.
