Tahira Ali

"We choose, and in so doing, we define ourselves. We are defined by our choices, though we may be remembered for the worst of them. But what choices we make, they will affect others. And perhaps given time, we may change in the eyes of others."

She looked away from the soldier woman who had entered. With luck, Lt. Col. Stafford was not here for her.

"This place," said Tahira Ali, "it is not the type of place I would normally enter. . . for some reason tonight, I felt drawn to it." She slunk lower in her seat as Maximilian entered, hoping none of the newcomers would sense her presence here. 25 million USD was very tempting. She had learned that the hard way.

"If I knew that, I would not be having this discussion," she said, turning her face toward the wall. She did not know how many of these patrons had had contact with the Americans or their infamous posters, but she knew she wasn't keen to find out, not the hard way. "You tell me, Miki, of what place do you come? Tell me about your home. . . your family."

"Nippon," she said, the correction automatic. "My cousin, the daughter of my father's sister, she went to school in Nippon. She is a scientist now. She told me she earned a high honor: a Nobel Chemistry Prize. But I am not familiar with your country. Not in any way." Tahira Ali sighed, her hand playing with the cup of water. "I have heard it is a beautiful place. Mine. . . mine was empty. Barren.

"The nation was called East Anar Tynan when I was there. Today, I am told, it is called Mutalistan. It is mostly desert, with mountains to the North. The gardens were beautiful. . . the gardens of the city. I often met -- I often sat there." She sighed wistfully, glancing around the bar to see a number of soldiers and other newcomers within. It was growing crowded very fast. Tahira Ali tensed, her shoulders drawing tighter together. More people, higher chance of recognition. If she was recognized--Tahira Ali did not want to imagine what would happen. But surely, it would not bode well for her.

And so she watched him leave, suddenly alone in the bar, and strangely discomforted. She looked into her cup and saw her face in the water, ripples floating gently across its surface. Tahira Ali looked once more around the bar and observed the others.

"I?" Tahira Ali looked up, her eyes on the young man standing before her. A growing sense of unease came with the words, along with a sense of panic. "I? What would you have with me?"

Character Portrait: Tahira Ali Tahira Ali says,
The stench of alcohol hit her first, and she edged backwards in her seat, as far away from this man as she could get. Unfortunately, she realized, with a growing sense of desperation, she was trapping herself in a corner. He was drunk. She had not seen many drunks in her life, but of those few she had seen, she knew this man was one of them. "Aye," she said softly, looking to her side, and then to the other. "For murder." With luck, he would turn away and leave her. Her hand slid under the table, as a precaution, to where she had kept her scimitar.

Character Portrait: Tahira Ali Tahira Ali says,
A shiver of fear passed through her before she noticed it. She looked up then, meeting his eyes with her own empty ones. "It does not, then," she said, her voice so soft Maximilius would have to strain to make out her words. Her hand closed around the hilt of her scimitar and she placed it on her lap. "If that is true, as you say, then I would not expect it to." She inclined her head gravely. "Is there something you wish of me?"

Her instinct was correct. He was here for the bounty the FBI had placed upon her. "You need not go down this path," she whispered desperately, her eyes, for the all the world, expressionless. Only one other had ever said she had a hint of emotion in them--and it was sadness. Tonight, though, they were empty as ever. "Money is not all there is to be had."

"He is not American, I think," said Tahira Ali to Motoko. Then, to Maximilius, she spoke again, her voice loud enough so that Motoko could hear also. "I think this is not what you seek, sayed."

"Neither, actually," said Tahira Ali. "My nation is called Mutalistan. It is to the Northeast of Saudi Arabia." She stood then, as she was far shorter than either Motoko or Maximilius seated, the position awkward, but she moved her chair backward and gripped her scimitar, the blade pointed at an angle to the floor. There she stood, her eyes somewhere between the two before her.

"I have no choice, then," responded Tahira Ali, her voice once again grown soft. If he looked, he might have seen a hint of sadness in her eyes, the sadness her beloved had once spoken of. "I am honor-bound to fight. I cannot refuse a challenge." And she brought up her scimitar, the wicked blade glinting in the barl ight, angled toward Maximilius.

She watched expressionlessly as her opponent withdrew a second knife and brought her left hand to bear on her scimitar's hilt along with her other one. Tahira Ali noticed a slight alteration in movement as Maximilius moved the knife-bearing arm into a fighting position. Intrigued, her mind explored the possibilities. A strange ability, a wound, strange mannerisms, or simply a trick of the light. Still, she altered her balance til she was in a sturdy fighting stance.
