A group of battle-hardened veterans. These legendary champions came from all walks of life before banding together in the defense of Terra.

Description

Name: Talren Cathos
Age: 33
Gender: Male
Species: Half-elf
Race: Alt-Terran
Nationality: Alt-Terran; Lurandian

Height: 5' 9"
Weight: 139 lbs
Hair Colour: Blonde
Eye Colour: Amber

Brief Desc.: The son of an ex-Thief (with a capital T, mind, and he'll tell you the difference whenever he gets the chance) and an innkeeper's daughter, Talren's past was far from glamorous. He learned the practical skills he needed to survive on the cutthroat streets of the port city of Arantine from his infamous father, and the charisma he needed to complement it from his charming mother.

Talren had something neither of them did, though. He had luck. He seemed to live a charmed life, gambling for a fortune time and time again and always seeming to come out on top in the end - even when things looked sour. Whether it be dicing for coins or for his life, before it was all over, the roll landed in his favour.

It would be the way of the world that some blasted dragon lady would ruin his quite comfy life of dicing, bouncing serving girls on his knee (and for that matter casting the occasional sly wink to the bouncers to match) and drinking to call him off for some blessed purpose or whatever Light damned excuse she had for disturbing his sleep time and time again.

So begins...

The satyr breathed in the wholesome scent of alchohol. The man wouldn't waste his afternoon feeling wasted by the cartographer and exploring he'd done that morning. Jon was the satyr's name and he'd raise a flagon to anything, and hence the cloved hoofed man put his claymore next to the counter and flagged down the bartender.

"Get me some of that Fire Mead, mate. Don't like that fruity reserve, god." Jon laughed, grinning and paying the bartender with a collection of rusty coins, he was a tiny bit broke. "Stewed pigeons? What are you? A bunch of savages, HAR!"

It was a pleasant escape, coming to this tavern. Since he'd figured out how to get to it, at least, it had been a nice break from the decidedly alien nature of much of the world that he'd been drawn to by his Light buggered dreams of bloody dragons and their bloody heroism. Talren Cathos was no bloody hero. It was like his mother always used to say, 'A hero's a hero so long as he's in the story books, here in the real world we call heroes Light-blinded fools and then fleece 'em for every coin they's carrying'.

So how in the Light had he ended up supposedly being one of them? No doubt it was all part of some accursed mage's scheme, that was the way it always seemed to be. Witches and warlocks tampering with the fates to ruin a good sellsword's career. How was he supposed to make money just helping people?

These were the kind of questions that only a hearty drink could answer, and it was for that reason that the half-elf was seated at one of the tables at the griffon, flipping a coin in one hand and catching it. Flipping, and catching, and so on, and so forth. A satyr was at the bar, carrying a bloody claymore of all things. A claymore? Weren't satyr's supposed to carry lutes? Light take it, this place didn't make much more sense than the damn city of metal monstrosities that people willingly climbed into the bellies of.

Everyone outside of Lurandy was insane, Talren was quite certain by now.

The Grey Man had yet to dawn his mask and hood, and his tired eyes scanned the surrounding buildings. He'd been on Terra for two days, and the only instructions he'd had was to wait. His gaze fell on The Drunken Griffon Tavern, and he felt a sharp pain in his chest. His face made an expression of discomfort, and the shrill voice of Wyrm echoed in his mind. The words were of little importance, and it was merely a reminder to keep from causing too much trouble before the gods decided it was time to act in their behalf.

He pushed into the bar and had a seat not too far down from The Satyr, "Get me an ale, and don't give me that cheap shit up front." He said, using one of the napkins to wipe some of the dirt from his face.

The satyr looked around the slightly empty bar and took a hearty gulp of his mead, savoring the sting in his throat and swigged the flagon around in one hand. "That's some good stuff, keep. Cheers, mate." The satyr said to the barkeep and turned around to face the door and put his elbows on the counter.

"Oi, greensleeves. I see you got some deft bloody fingers." The satyr begun, believing the elf to be a pushover, just like the rest of the tree-hugging fools that pranced around in the forests like the other clans of satyr. "You got some proper lungs in you?" The satyr continued, an idea forming in the map-filled, clumsily horned of his. "What about you, ya hooded bastard?" The Satyr pointed at the grey man with a malicious smile.

"I bet fifty coins." Which Jon didn't have. "That I can outdrink you both, right here, right now. Ya both look like sneaky backstabbin' weak liver cunts." The satyr finished.

This wasn't some prancing forest satyr, apparently.

Talren let the coin fall on the table after his next flip. It landed not with a clatter, as it wobbled and bounced, but with a single tap. The coin had landed exactly on its edge. The half elf stared at it as though it were a viper for several long moments, frowning, before he looked away. Light burn him, that wasn't natural. Even after all these years, he still wasn't comfortable with how often it happened.

"I'd have to be a fool with his head stuck so far up his own arse that he's blinded to take that bet, goat-legs," he called back at Jon, "For one thing, if I were you, I'd have my buddy waiting in the back to take advantage of the poor suckers I convinced to get themselves drunk as a lord by takin' every last dime they were carrying. For another, you're a bloody Satyr, you're practically famous as a species for getting drunk."

Talren waved a hand, "Take your bet and shove it up your furry behind. I'll play dice with you any day, or cards, but I'm no fool who thinks he can outdrink a goat."

The Grey Man raised an eyebrow to the Satyr, and swiveled on his stool towards the creature. He heard The Archon mutter in the back of his mind, "Do not oblige this mongrel, you will remain silent." The Grey Man shrugged off the god's command, an unusual occurrence.

"I'm with White-hair, you can keep your money." He laughed, taking a swig of his ale. Satyr's were right up there with dwarves when it came to the imbibing of alcohols.

"Har! You think me a fool to play dice or cards with an elf either? You must be jokin'. You're a smart elf though, we satyr are known for our ability to hold our liquor. Ya must like the fruity stuff then, how about a compromise." Jon grinned and held out a finger in a challenging gesture.

"We play dice roulette, loser takes a drink, winner buys the next round." The satyr offered, taking another heavy swig of his mead. "No money, just get me an excuse to get some free drinks off you mutts." Jon took a drink, slamming the flagon down and hissing though the scalding bubbles.

The satyr leaned forward. "Trust me, I don't even know the lovable bastard behind the counter. I just came to this bloody place and I've spent a little too much time sober." The satyr rambled, rolling his eyes. "Plus, you two are the backstabbin' rogue lookalikes, I'm the one whose carryin' the bloody sword." Jon added.

Jon leaned his chair forward haphazardly and offered two outstretched hands in friendship towards the hooded figure and the elf. "Jon. I promise I don't mean ta steal your money. I am but an honorable asshole." The satyr introduced, grinning lopsidedly.

A small smirk found its way to Talren's face, and he nodded his head. "You have yourself a deal, honourable asshole Jon. My name's Talren." he said, rising to his feet and pacing over to shake the man's hand. "And don't be so quick to judge a book by its cover, I'm a sell-sword, not a sneak-thief. Or at least I was, Light burn me for giving that up."

The half-elf leaned against the bar counter casually, grinning back at the satyr. "What's your game, Jon?"

The Grey Man smiled and shook the Satyr's hand. "Good to meet you Jon, I'm Grey." He said, standing and finishing his drink. It'd been a while since the gods had allowed him to actually converse with people. Hopefully, their benevolence would last long enough to give him some satisfaction. The life of a herald of doom wasn't one he enjoyed too much.

"Alright, I'm in."

"Draw maps for a livin' mate, not my fault, trust me, I wish I never learned how to draw the damn things." The satyr replied, taking another swig. The satyr checked his pockets for a pair of dice, found none and gave the elf an expectant look. "You know, that's what a sneak thief would say, but you seem like a pretty solid sellsword."

Jon leaned to the side and looked at the elf's armament. "Damn ya, I hope your quick with that knife. Nice to meet you two buggers too, Grey and Talren. You both got some scary lookin' equipment. Grey, you look like you're gonna stab a bastard in the eye and sell his soul to whatever demon your mask represents." The satyr got up, and took a seat at the elf's table and gesturing for the hooded man to do the same.

"Whose got the dice?"

"Never far from hand," Talren snatched a pouch up from his hip and tipped a small handful of dice onto the table. "Not that I make a habit of gambling, burn me, I never. Positively disdainful practice, you know?"

Now, Talren was good at lying, but even a child could have told you that was a bare faced falsehood.

"Har! You're a shit liar, no wonder you gave up the stealin'. Guards ain't that dumb." Jon grinned back, slapping Talren on the back with his right hand. "The game works like this, whoever rolls highest wins, whoever rolls lowest takes a drink of the strongest shit they have here." The satyr flagged down the bartender for three shot glasses and a bottle of the strongest alcohol they had.

All of which was paid by the satyr's less than substantial pocket. "Winner of each round buys the next round, whoever gets the most drunk... We'll think of somethin'."

Jon glanced at Kaden Exas with a raised eyebrow and raised his voice to shout. "Oi! Honeyed water? What are you? A pansy! Come get some real drink." Jon grinned to his new companions and then rolled the dice. The dice spun across the table and landed on a measly two. "Bastard."

Jon took a shot of the burning stuff, eyes watering.

"Trying to booze up the kids, eh? Typical satyr." Talren grinned, casting Kaden a shrug, "Hey, I won't tell."

The elf spun a die between his fingers before casting it across the table, drumming the fingers of his free hand along to Adiana's music. "Y'know, for all the bloody insanity of this place, I could get used to the music. They'd call these instruments witchcraft back home."

The die came to a stop, landing firmly on a six. "Looks like I get lucky, eh? Or not, depending on how you figure it." After all, the winner had to pay for the next drink.

"Not my fault, I can't tell the damn difference between ages with you elves." The satyr replied, blinking his eyes a few time to dismiss the effects of the heavy drink. "Round two, mate." The satyr rolled once again, scattering the dice on the table with a solid thump. "Come on, you buggers." The dice bounced on the table and landed on a three.

Jon kicked the table violently. "Come on you two, roll." The satyr begun to wait and looked towards the strange instruments and shook his head. "Who says it isn't? Probably got some demons in it, I mean, have you ever heard an instrument such as that? That singer though..." The satyr trailed off, licking his lips and whistling with his fingers.

"A gal like that's well suited to a seat on a man's knee, huh?" Talren remarked, chuckling. Another flick of his wrist. This time the die came up a neat four. Just enough to dodge the drink, but hopefully not enough to have to pay.

How lucky.

"You're not doing so well there, friend. Good thing you can handle your drink!"

"Har. I didn't expect a greensleeves to know about that sort of thing, I'm impressed." Jon replied, laughing as he watched the dice land on a solid four. The satyr's eyes turned to slits and he shook his head. "You got some luck, Talren. Too much of it if you ask me, ya bastard." The satyr leaned back and eyed the drink.

Jon looked to Grey. "HAR! HAR! Drink up." The satyr laughed, glad he wasn't the only one to lose. "I've got an idea, whoever wins gets to ask her to sit on their knee first. She looks like the type, and how could she refuse some handsome devils like us?" Jon had a cunning smile on his lips.

The satyr took up the dice and swung his hand again, flicking the dice across the table. When the dice came to a stop, the result was only one higher. Four. "Lady Luck is a bloody whore."

"Lady Luck's always been sweet on me, friend," Talren chuckled, "We're old bedmates, me and her, no doubt." Another roll, this time a five. "And I'm no greensleeves, elf or not. Bloody woodland bastards can go to the void for all the use they are. I was born in a city and if I have my way I'll die in a city, centuries old and in a soft bed full of beauties."

The elf glanced back towards the singer, shrugging his shoulders, "A fair wager, I'll warrant. And the loser?" Talren raised an amused eyebrow questioningly at Jon.

"You'd call me boring if I said that the loser buys the next bottle. What do you say?" The satyr asked, curious as to what kind of punishment what befall the loser of this manliest of all games. "You still haven't had a drink, you're a scoundrel and a cheat I bet, bedding Lady Luck before this is cheatin' on the highest degree." Jon laughed and shook his head.

Jon grabbed the dice up in his hand and blew on them, rolling them around and then making a show off throwing them onto the table, they rolled past three, then one and begun to spin on it's side. "Lady luck don't fail me now, you sultry bitch." Jon mumbled under his breath.

Then the satyr rolled a six. The highest number on the dice and he shot upwards with a loud clatter. "Yess! Ah ha ha." The satyr shouted, with a loud laugh and nearly headbutting the lanterns above them.

"You thought you were slick!"

A casual flick of the wrist cast Talren's die onto the table, rolling and bouncing across the surface. The die ricocheted off of one of the glasses at the centre of the table, bouncing off only to smack into Jon's die and knocking it with enough force to jolt it onto its side, swapping the six for a four. Talren's die came up with its own six.

The half-elf raised an eyebrow, "Does that count as winning?" he asked casually, winking. "I'll be willing to call it a draw if you insist."

He rolled his shoulders in a shrug, "I'd suggest the loser should have some forfeit or another, but Light burn me if I've any idea what that'd be good for. I'd fleece you for your gold, too, but only out of habit. I've plenty of that these days."
