Tamika Blackburn

Born a Cambion, with no knowledge of her true origins, Tamika does her best to blend into normality while resisting the demonic impulses lurking within her genetic code.

Description

Name: Tamika Blackburn
Nicknames: Tami
Age: Seventeen
Gender: Female

Appearance: Cambion are always angelically beautiful, a trait picked up from their accursed 'parents'. Tamika is no exception to this rule; her sharp, aqualine features give her youthful face a mature edge, and the prominent point of her chin and high cheekbones make her look years older than what she is. Although this does not look unnatural, it would be safe to say that she draws curious glances often. It does not help that her eyes are a startling vibrant shade of blue, so bright that she often covers them with glasses, or that her hair seems to shimmer between a pale auburn and snowy white. Lithe, young and pretty, it is easy to believe that she is the sire of an incubus.

Because Tamika is a Cambion, there are other differences to her that threaten to tell her apart, some obvious, some less so. If anyone were to look hard enough, they would realise that Tamika doesn't breath; there is no rise and fall of her chest, no breathlessness if she runs to catch a bus. If humans could hear such sounds, they would notice the absent of a racing heartbeat; of any heartbeat at all. Cambion are like walking corpses; and as they grow older the differences become ever more clear. Her eyes are becoming an ever more glowing shade of blue, and her hair grows ever more vibrant in its shades of red every year that passes. Such changes are only the beginning...

Personality

Abilities:
- Tamika has been blessed (or cursed) since birth with the ability to see through the facade that mythical creatures are able to assume when in the mortal realms. Not only this, but she can see those souls of the dead which are yet to leave this realm; this allows her to converse, and interfere, with them.
- Tamika has elemental control over Fire; not only can she manipulate and create heat or naked flames, but she can summon them via the flow of her own blood. Her powers rival many of the more powerful demons she encounters.
- Telepathy and Telekinesis; gifts (among others) that she endowed onto her 'half-sister', Morika. Her Telekinetic abilities do not rival her Elemental gifts, but she is able to lift, move and destroy objects far larger and heavier than herself. Vehicles and people are all vulnerable, though houses are a little too big.
- Tamika, though not fully a demon, does possess some of the fortitude that their race commands. While she is not particularly faster or stronger than the average human, she does wound less easily, and is able to cope with her wounds more readily.
- Given that, by all technicality Tamika is already dead, she can't technically die, not by conventional methods, anyway. In order to destroy Tamika, her head or soul must be removed from her body, or her entire body destroyed. A wound to her lungs, for instance, does little fatal damage due to the fact she does not utilize her respiratory system.
- Tamika can also move between the mortal realm and the realm of Hell at will; not that she would actually want to do that.

Ability Flaws:
- Being able to see the realm that lingers just beyond ours means there is one problem. They can see her too. While she looks human, other unnatural beings can simply tell, much like a sixth sense, that Tamika is not quite human. In the same fashion, the spirits of the dead know she see's them, and they know she might be able to help...
- Given that half her genetic code is spawned from a demon, Tamika is constantly aware of the fact that Hell is pulling her towards it, slowly working its will over her very being as she ages. Were she to ever enter hell, or give in to it... well, who knows what may become of her.

Skills:

- Tamika has begun learning to defend herself against her enemies; her current tuition covers the use of daggers and short blades, in combat techniques typical of Japan and China.
- Tamika is an accomplished member of her Diving School, and of her schools gymnastics department.

Weaknesses:
- Given that Tamika is a slight of a girl, her lacks the physical muscle to defeat most opponents face to face. She has no more strength than the average human female (albeit, a physically fit and trained one).

Personality:
To Tamika, being 'normal' is crucial to her, in a sense it is her lifeline to goodness and sanity which would otherwise be ripped away by her demon blood. But it is mostly because of her demon blood that she isn't in fact more messed up, the horrors she has witnessed have been bearable because of the dark part of her. It is that part of her where she locks away these traumatic experiences and often the desires and feelings that would otherwise convert her back to her demonic origins. She's most of the time bubbly, a little sarcastic but most importantly is unrealistically hopefully. That is her good side. When the her slightly darker side comes out to play, Tamika's words are often harsh and that sarcasm is laced with cruelty. She has a skill with words and a cunning that is able to convince the lesser minds of anything. This causes some major mood swings in her as well as a deep paranoia that any thing she does could snap the one thing inside her that is keeping her 'good'.

Equipment

Tanto(x2): Tamika carries two short-blade Tanto's. They have a heat-resistant grip, and a black steel metallic blade, with the entire weapon measure at 12". These daggers are mystically enchanted to hold a special propensity for slaying demons and other undead; wounds are accompanied by flashes of fire and cause serious infection, dealing more damage to undead or demonic enemies. Not to say that they aren't effective at killing people, though.

Wakizashi: Tamika also uses a 19" Wakizashi, also of black steel and with a heat-resistant grip, which she carries on her back using a shoulder-strap made of soft blackened leather. As with her Tanto, Tamika's Wakizashi is also enchanted in the same way, and can deliver the same damage to undead or demonic foes.

(Note: Enchantment effects: Demons, Zombies, Vampires, Possessed and other creatures of similar ilk. Both weapons are less effective against opposing creatures: Angels being an example.)

Pouches and Vials: Tamika carries pouches on her belt in which she carries two items: vials of her own extracted blood, and small explosives that generate flames.

Armour: Having a disdain for heavy armour, Tamika only wears a pair of blackened steel arm braces.

History

Biography: Currently living in a bustling city with her Father, Rubin Blackburn and her sister of the same age, Morika. They actually seem to live a normal life, but that is because of her Father being a dream Incubus rather than a blood Incubus like his kin. He has strived hard to make a normal life for his two daughters but it has been especially hard because not only must he help them cope with their demon blood, but he lost the one woman he loved and despite his demonicness wanted to raise a family with her. He is very protective of both Tamika and Morika, despite probably guarding Tamika a little more than necessary. The fact that they are not normal is widely ignored and they act as if nothing is different.

So begins...

As predicted, Tamika had been using the steel of her sword to catch Lyra's reflection. As soon as the woman began to move, she had begun turning to meet her. It was true that the low attack was unexpected, but Tamika's surprise did not cause any hesitation - her plan remained the same. As she turned, she hooked a foot beneath the rack and dragged it between herself and Lyra. The wheels grated noisily against the lacquered floor. The momentum of the undead womans attack would be to great for her to stop before her iron spike slid through the bars of the rack. Tamika took the opportunity to stab directly down with her Tanto towards Lyra's wrist, keeping her Wakizashi at a a guard that protected from her abdomen to her throat.

Tamika tried in vein to hold onto her Tanto, its slick black leaving a large, deep wound that almost severed Lyra's arm as she pulled, but in the end her grip slipped and she was disarmed of her dagger. When Lyra kicked the rack, she was reminded of her earlier training session. The heavy rack toppled, and given Tamika's petite size, she fell beneath its weight, landing on her back beneath the rack.

Perfect. Tamika slid her Wakizashi through the slits in the rack and up towards the womans chest - a move that had only recently been pulled on her, as it happened. Given the size difference between the Wakizashi and the iron spike, Lyra would find herself impaled long before she began driving the spike through Tamika. Too take advantage of any delay her attack might cause, Tamika began sliding her arm up from beneath the rack, so that she could place the steel protector on her arm over her heart.

Fortunately, being a Cambion Tamika was also mostly dead. While the spike hurt - and she had screamed - she wouldn't die from the wound. When the woman slid herself off her blade, Tamika took the opportunity to nimbly slip her lithe body from beneath the rack and backpedal a few steps to give herself some space. Her chest was bleeding down her top, staining the white material with a crimson blossom. It was lucky the spike had gone deeper. Tamika smiled sarcastically at the other woman, but remained otherwise silent as she studied her opponent. A heavy wound to her chest, and her left arm was likely going to be more hindrance than help. She took a couple of steps to the left of the rack, placing her now more than two feet from the Dojo wall, but with no obstacles before her. She waited patiently.

When she picked up the poleaxe, Tamika had brief moment where her stomach fluttered and she almost panicked. She managed to reign in her emotions before she acted on impulse however, and began flicking her eyes across the room. Quickly, she began to strafe along the room, until she had placed the large wooden punching block to her immediate left. It's large size meant that an attack from her left flank would be impossible, and the protruding arms made a stab at her throat or abdomen difficult. Tamika adjusted her grip on the Wakizashi, knuckles cracking as she did so. She kept the blade in a mid guard, ready to sweep it across her body if the need arose.

Tamika lifted her Wakizashi into a high guard as the woman began to draw her hammer, and the heavy weapon clanged sharply against her steel blade. The force of the blow made her stumble backwards, and her sword dug into her forehead slightly. A thin sliver of blood slid from down her nose and dripped to the ground, a tiny red spot on the otherwise immaculate wood. Tamika grunted and began circling the wooden block in time with the woman, always keeping the wooden block to her left. She wasn't going to be out-maneuvered at such a crucial moment. Her opponent was going to have to risk coming in close to attack her. Tamika bent her knees, and maintained her mid-guard; it would be the most versatile in facing the poleaxe..

Tamika had to admit, the idea was a fairly ingenious one, and for a second she froze and couldn't decide how to act. Inspiration quickly came to her, however. While the woman circled, Tamika put a foot on one of the protruding many stumps protruding from the wooden block and jumped over the scattered nails. Although she had now lost the cover on her left flank, and stood in the open, she still had her feet intact. She kept her guard up, and turned her left arm so the steel plate covered her thighs. She began to approach, very slowly, her opponent, guard maintained at all times.

It was time to take a blow to deal one. Tamika took a step forwards as the poleaxe swung, so the sharpened blade at its end would not cut her in half. As she moved forwards she lifted her left arm up and over the poleaxe. She kept approaching Lyra even as the poleaxe crunched against her side, shattering one of her ribs with a loud, painful snap. Lyra let out a shallow wail, but continued progressing, biting into her lip as she did so. She looked her hand around the shaft of the poleaxe, and swung her Wakizashi straight for the neck of the undead warrior. The blade was strong enough to sever the head, and Lyra would have only seconds to act, and doing so while Tamika held her poleaxe would require ingenuity that the red-head hoped her opponent lacked.

Tamika's blade slid through the air above her opponents head, and she felt her irritation grow a little. She had dropped the poleaxe almost as soon as Lyra had, unburdening herself of the heavyweight item. Tamika planted her foot to stop her turning strike as Lyra tugged the iron spike from her belt. Lyra would have to rise up past Tamika's lowered hand to strike at her with the weapon. Reacting quickly, Tamika drew the Tanto just above her hand from its sheath and placed it directly against the iron spikes ascent to deflect the weapon before it could rise any higher than her stomach. She used the momentum of her opponents springing attack to backpedal quickly away from Lyra and adjust her stance. She resumed her mid-guard, patient, and waiting.

Tamika, someone who often took pride in her appearance, recognised the bar of soap with a note of surprise - and proceeded to ignore the non-lethal object. No fuse, or markings probably meant it really was just a bar of soap. She kept her eye on her opponent, and waited for her to strike. As soon as the woman attacked, she executed her plan. Tamika dropped to one shoulder, and propelled herself along the ground. She rose to one knee as the womans weapon was set to pass over her head, its momentum to great to be an adequate defense at this point. From one knee, Tamika shot up so that her Wakizashi would slice straight through the undead warrior's exposed chin, and out through the back of her head - skewering her brains in the process. Her Tanto was directed at the womans left hand thigh, and its sharpened steel blade ready to pierce the soft flesh. It wasn't going to be a fatal wound, but it should make her think twice about kneeing her in the stomach.

In the end, the girl running straight into Tamika's body proved to be something of a good thing, rather than the disaster it appeared. Tamika allowed her sword to be pressed between them, and with one foot back to support both of the girls weight she turned with her opponent. She brought her Tanto - which had glanced across Lyra's thigh - up and around so that she could plunge the blackened steel blade straight into the back of her opponents head with all her might. To try and keep her opponent still while she did this, she wrapped her forward leg around her enemies.

Given that the two girls had tumbled together, Tamika was as quick to roll as the other girl. The spike thudded into the ground where her foot had been only seconds ago; a close call that cost her the end of her shoe, but fortunately not her toes. Now holding no weapons, the girl had begun to back pedal away, and this was the perfect opportunity to press a heavy advantage. Springing forwards, Tamika knew she could out-run someone who was traveling backwards, and she performed a swung her Wakizashi across for a second attempt at a beheading, her Tanto kept close to her in case of a counter. Weaponless, Lyra was knee-deep in it, despite Tamika's wounds.

Tamika was already using their relative positions. Tamika was moving forwards at an angle that would sweep her to the right, whereas her opponent had had to change her backwards momentum to drag Tamika along; this pitted Tamika's momentum against the other girls lack of balance. With this in mind, Tamika brought her Tanto up for a quick, sharp and precise cut to the chin, with the goal of piercing the brain while her opponent was busy drawing her stakes from her pouch. The divide in attention between drawing a weapon, and trying to recover from one attack at the same time as preparing for another should favour the red-head.

After a final drag, she tossed the butt of the cigarette onto the ground and stubbed it out with the toe of her plimsoll, leaving the remnants squashed into the pavement. A quick glance up revealed layers of thick, black clouds. She wrinkled her nose and looked around for somewhere to sit out the coming shower. Much to her chagrin, the first place that looked suitable was Gambit's.

She groaned, but found herself headed towards the bar anyway.

When she entered her mood was far from allayed; the usual dregs of society were sitting in the bar, and let let out a pensive sigh. Flicking her hair over her shoulder, the young (underage, in fact!) girl headed straight for the bar. A thin, blonde-haired woman was sitting beside her when she ordered her first drink.

Vodka. As always. Something she inherited from her mother.

Without hesitation Tamika gave him her prize-winning smile and reached into her jean pocket. A quick fumble and she pulled out a drivers license to prove her age. She laid the tiny square of plastic onto the bar and slid it towards with.

"There you go."

Tamika picked up the card languidly and slipped it back into her pocket with a sigh. She eyed the bartender for a few minutes, nose wrinkling on the bridge and brows drawn in. Since when did they hire bartenders who were actually good at their jobs? No doubt Riko would kick a fit if she saw this.

"Fine. Juice it is."

She buried her face in her hands. It was going to be a long day.

Tamika shot the woman next to her a caustic glance, but didn't have the energy to make a snappy remark. Instead she just shook her head, eyes watching Dom as he hunted around in the fridge for a juicebox - he didn't look amused.

"I guess so," she replied. "I sure hope he doesn't work often."

She had to bite her tongue when Dom laid the cherry-red box on the counter before her, which was now quite possibly the brightest thing in the room. The old guy had probably done it just to spite her, or to mock her hair colour. She smiled anyway, and slid some money across the counter.

"Keep the change." She smiled, a sickly sweet cut-out. "Asshole" she whispered.

Tamika grunted, watching the old bartender stalk off back into his office. She couldn't imagine him thundering anywhere, but Gambit's was full of stranger things. She removed the straw from her juicebox and stuck it in her mouth, chewing the end of the plastic tubing.

"You know what they say about that?" Tamika chirped up, a sly grin on her face. She was looking at the scraps of paper scattered around the blonde woman. "Means you're sexually frustrated."

She couldn't hold back the snort of laughter that erupted from her.

That didn't help her laughter, and tiny tears welled in her eyes. Clearly the blonde woman didn't get out a lot. Tamika smiled and shook her head from side to side, a wide chesire grin on her angelic features.

"No. Peeling the label." She pointed to the bottle Liesha had in her hand, and snorted again.

"Not what I say that you gotta worry about."

Tamika smiled, but her laughter had subsided for the moment. She slipped the (chewed, true) straw from her mouth and spent a few minutes getting the mangled end to go through the foil top. She took a few quick mouthfuls and set the cherry-red box back on the counter.

"So are you like, on your own?"

Tamika furrowed her brow. On duty? She couldn't picture the woman as security for the bar; she was too skinny, and she had pig-tails. The only other option left was a hooker, but somehow that didn't fit with the woman either...

She gave the woman another furtive glance, nose wrinkling once again. She had definitely ruled out security, she just didn't look mean enough. She decided she would go for the long shot. Biting her lip, the younger girl lowered her voice.

"Isn't that.. illegal?"

"Wait. What? Don't you dare hang u-"

Rattling out a irritable sigh, Tamika was barely aware of how much she had raised her voice as she entered the bar. A few people had turned to glance at her, but as usual Gambit's remained peacefully oblivious, tiny microcosms continuing undisturbed. It was why she liked the place; they left her alone. Running a hand through her length of auburn hair, she took a seat at the bar and gave the 'tender a polite half-smile.

"Just a glass of water today, please. Ice, too."

A few moments later Tamika sat at the bar with a glass of chilled water in her hand, and her face resting in one palm. She had a growing headache, and her sister wasn't doing much to cure it.

Typical Friday.

Tamika Blackburn couldn't believe she had done it. She had managed to sneak out! Standing in front of the door to Gambit's she took a deep breath before pushing it open. To her surprise it was empty, or pretty much. The only person was a woman who seemed to be a bit drunk as she was singing to herself. She faltered at the door unsure whether to continue in

had faced worse than this, but it was the fact that it was just her and the bartender that shook her. But she put on a casual facade, like she went into bars every night. Her confident steps carried for to the bar, her boots tapping against the wooden floor.

"Uh... Right, I'm coming in. Can I have... What have you got?" While she may have been apt at defending herself against monstrosities she hadn't exactly learnt about the nature of a bar or what sort of drinks they held, let alone actually had a proper drink.
