And eventually, a girl followed close behind, with her head cocked slightly sideways, pulling up the ends of her dress to walk. Rather peculiar, given it was just past the knee, but maybe she hadn't noticed what her hands were doing. When her mouth was busy grinning like a cheshire, and her eyes were counting which people scurried away in fear, it was easy to ignore what her hands were doing. She tallied them up like a game those people he was talking to, like when she was riding down the highway, and counting purple cars against yellow ones with her sister.

Yellow always won, but, well, she liked purple.

Most people just ignored the fellow, but she couldn't help but give a small chuckle when they hollered or shrieked at him. Not at his misfortune, but gods were they ignorant, weren't they? He was just asking for directions, wasn't he? And there came a time when she'd chucked too loud and a sound like a pig came out of her nose, and her eyes shot wide in case the man would look at her.

So she piped up pretty quickly.

"Why don't you just stop by a mechanic? Or a car shop. They gots tools and lasers that'd chop that right off, better than a locksmith would." she said, and stepped fast to catch up with the man. "And mechanics are grimy. Less scared than people on the street, y'know. They got tattoos like you do and they'd cut you out right quick."

"...They put the time and effort into making those things for your wrists, and then they up and bound you in them. Way things are manufactured anyway, these days, people don't put work into nothin'. Just designs, then it's off to the factory. Only thing you'd be bustin' up is ore." she said, with a haughty knowledge. "You ever feel a weighted pen? Like, hand-crafted, not none of that Bic mass-produced crap."

Her face pulled into a pucker. She wrapped a finger into the black cuffs, where the Os of the 8 met. "'Course you haven't, 'cause they don't make stuff like they used to. They don't make stuff hand-crafted anymore."

When she was done with her segment, the look of determination melted off her face. She'dn't found a need to answer the big man's question, nor had she heard it through the sound of her own talking. She'd seen a figure out of the corner of her eye.

And so those eyes looked over to Nicola, like a deer caught in a headlight. She stared for a second, before her mouth contorted into something confounded.

"...Smilin' for some reason. Might be relevant."

"Don't need to be so nervous." Tanny said, walking to the back of Nicola. "I like to think that he looks like a mall santa - don't he? Without the cap and beard and stuffed belly. All he'd need is that for people to sit on his lap rather than scream at him."

And she'd taken a moment to take in his features. They weren't the best looking. Not by a mile. And he had tattoos that only a mechanic or a biker would love. But he didn't scream at anyone when they ran away screaming at him. And he didn't throw a fit with those things around his hands. She would've screamed right back. It wouldn'tve mattered what she was saying.

"Tanny Day."

Tanny stared for an uncomfortable amount of time at the man, taking an odd amount of interest in his face. It was oddly ... homely, for what he was. Perhaps that was the reason why everyone was running away. His demeanor certainly wasn't.

"Aiding and abetting makes you an accessory to the crime he committed." she suddenly blurted, eyes focusing on the mechanic. "Show me how to do it. You wouldn't be an accessory if I stole your tools, which is what I did. Am doing. Will do."

"I threatened you." Tanny repeated.

"Need new clothes, too. Think someone will call the cops. Or already has. You look like you just got out of prison. Think that's what you did. Don't give you jumpsuits in jail." she said, following both of them along.

"You could mix the acid with sodium hydroxide, and it'll neutralize the acid and turn it into salt." she mentioned.

"Well, we can drill a tiny hole and put lye in it. And if it's all acid-y still when the lye's in there, figure we don't have to smash you out or cut you out, can just jimmy you out or ... something like that. All else fails, acid burns ain't too painful, I think?" Tanny said.

"Big and sharp to get'm off. You can actually handle the tools if you wantst'a, I just figure if the policemen busts in or confiscates your security tapes, if you gots'm, then I might as well take the blame, bein' me."

"No. Acid wouldn't dissolve your hands instantly. They couldn't fit enough, even in those handcuffs." Tanny said with a reassuring smile, before opening a door adjacent to them, and disappearing into the room.

It seemed like only a moment. There had been sounds of dragging and metal-on-metal clinking, before the ball of a foot pushed the door open again, and Tanny came dragging something like the cousin of boltcutters; black like the color of the inmate's cuffs, and sharp at the ends. It scratched the floor as it went along.

"I'm a good judge of character. And if I'm not, it might not be bad if he does lack hands. It's an interesting project, anyway, and the moral reprehensibility of what he's possibly done makes me feel not quite as guilty as what I'm about to do."

Her hands suddenly tightened around the tool.

"What did you do?"

Tanny glanced to the prisoner, if only for a second. Without reply, she lifted the tool into the vat of water, and pressed it to his cuffs.

She looked to Jasmine, then. "Pour in the lye. I'll cut the cuffs at the same time.. The acid'll come out into the water and mix with the lye on contact. It's... a heated reaction, so it might be a little warm in there."

As soon as her partner in crime had poured in the lye, a resounding snap had come out through the water, and bubbles rose. She'd cut the cuffs, and hoped for an honest statement from the inmate. If acid hadn't come out, well,

He'd be in for a nasty burn from the lye Jasmine had poured in.

"There's a computer mounted on the wall. You can search by subject, author, name, pedigree, education level, 'er cash flow, if y'wanne. Better than tearin' through the books, row by row. I got somethin' like a flash memory too, if you need help looking for whatever you're looking for, feller." came a stringy voice, from one of the tables. It came from a girl, who had her hand flat on-top an encyclopedia, who didn't touch a page of the rather hefty book, and who was eyeballing the rather large man as soon as he'd come in. And given he was such an interesting looking figure, she wasn't looking away.

"Poodles and You? Or... Let me guess. Maintaining Your Buggy. Quickbook For Dummies."

"Wouldn't say interferin'. I offered to help you out, 'cause you might not be lookin' for a book on dogs, but you sure look like a lost one." she said, eyes rolling to the ceiling.

"I don't know what your first and second points have to do with usin' a computer. Your third point just sets you up for other parameters, I guess. And, well, your fourth point just makes you seem ungrateful as all get out, don't it? Be a lost puppy then, for alls I care. I won't tell you that they keep the old and unlabeleds o'er yonder." she said, hoisting herself up and walking toward a section in the back.

Technically, it wasn't telling.

"I'm afraid of people I'm particularly scared of. It goes without saying, doesn't it? People who continuously tell me I should be afraid of them..." Tanny reached into the shelf, and pulled out a book. It with thick and rimmed with dust, lined with no title. "...Lose intimidation factor by compensating for... something."

She glanced toward his gauntlet, and then shoved the blue book toward it.

"This it?"

The young girl, with a persistant smile on her face and unyielding persistance in her goal, whatever that was, cocked her head. "Well, what question would that be? What do I spend my free time doin'? Maybe I just like disobeyin' my 'caretaker's' wishes, talkin' to interestin' people with guns, or pullin' out the right books at the right time, or maybe I'm just damn lucky. I could be psychic, too. Or I could'a just used the computer."

She nodded down at the book.

"What's your interest?"

"Just interested, is all. That's about it. If you're lookin' for some ulterior motive, like the 14-year-old underground biker gang is out to getcha by helpin' you find your books, or I'm a blood-suckin' vampire, then, well..."

She went to smack the gun away.

"No, you're not too smart. So, what is it? I can help you read it, if you want."

"Maybe I am a blood-sucking vampire. You wouldn't know of it." Tanny said. "Well, are we sitting down to read, or are you checking it out? Come on. Haven't gotten all day, and you've not told me what it even is, yet."

She started toward the desk, glancing back, to make sure he was following.

"School's arbitrary."

"What's your name, anyway, fella? S'the point of walkin' in the library with a gun and a metal thing on your hand? You take thimbles that serious?" she pried, and attempted to slide the book over to herself.

"You're not exactly the morality police, either. Puttin' guns to girl's heads."

"Iris ... Laudervi." she said. "That's my name. And what about you, since you're the epitome of polite things, gentleman-like qualities, and brisk, blue eyes, bright as the beaches of Sol, huh?"

'Iris' flipped a few pages in, her eyes scanning the cover and the pages beneath. Her hand traced the binding, ever-slightly ripping at the book's seams.

Iris dug her fingers into the binding of the book, whose glue had been worn off due to age and abuse. The papers loosened individually, and she played them like an instrument. Then, suddenly, with her other hand, she tore out what she could to the floor, and smacked the unhinged pile of papers to the floor, seemingly without a care in the world. Iris, for a few moments, stared at the destroyed book, while passerbys took cursory glances and a few others paused to whisper.

"...Not anymore."

She glanced up to Illys.

"You didn't ask for my help, did'ja? Well, I'm not givin' it. And I don't help bad people, with guns, who point'm at my head. I'm not payin' for it." She said, and stood up from the desk.

"So that's why, I guess."

'Iris' turned, unceremoniously, and walked toward her table again.

"Okay." Tanny said. "I like your gun."

She stood again, gave a sly smile to the man, and crossed her arms. "So, do you want to go back to the old and unlabeleds section?"
