Description

Image

What do you see?

Not but a mortal

Calloused hands, and marred skin

Eyes that hide sorrows

A heart that yearns

What of this ranger, who hides behind walls, surrounding herself in solitude? What could she possibly have to hide?

Remember, when your dreams have ended…time can be transcended.
Just remember me.

Bravery in the face of Uncertainty.
Honor in the face of Death.
Integrity exchanged for Self Sacrifice.

When the line between good and evil becomes blurred...
When evil must be done for good to take hold...
Who is to judge the right and wrong way to go?

So begins...

The team itself wasn’t the image of stealth, but they were certainly a formidable force to behold. Twenty soldiers, each with their own special talents and abilities, were banded together, moving as a unit, cutting down foliage and sending the natural inhabitants scurrying for their lives. Taylor hung towards the back, attempting to keep close to her father, who managed to find nearly every root and bush with the toe of his heavy boot.

The girl moved lightly, quietly, the thin sheet-metal armor the only thing guarding her from enemy blows. She had her slacks tucked into her leather boots to keep them from dragging, and the sleeves of her tunic were rolled up. Many others were dressed in this fashion as well. The forest was bloody warm! With one hand under her father’s arm for support, she kept her other hand on the hilt of her sword, hazel eyes scanning the area ahead for some kind of disturbance. With all of this noise, it wouldn’t surprise her if a bunch of trolls managed to get the best of them.

“Tread lightly!” she hissed, but the warning went unheaded. Frustrated, the woman thought about pulling her father back to run for safety, but the truth was that in these woods, there really was no such thing as ‘safe’.

She was loath to leave her father, but the noise that the other men were making was far too much for her to handle. So, she left him back at the rear of the pack, pushing herself forward and withdrawing her sword to hold the flat of it against the lead officer’s chest. He balked, glaring down at her incredulously. “Listen,” she insisted in a whisper. The entire company halted, becoming perfectly silent.

A pause.

“I hear nothing.” The man grunted in reply. Taylor nodded.

“Exactly. We need to spread out a little. We’re attracting the attention of every living creature in these forsaken woodlands with all the noise we’re making.” The wind had shifted, carrying forward the scent of something that made the hair on the back of Taylor’s neck rise. The smell of human sweat.

“They’re here.” She whispered quietly, dropping her sword from his chest and gripping it with both hands.

Sitting atop a horse did wonders for the ego. In Taylor's case, this was no exception. Though her sword was far too heavy for her to reasonably carry, she had it strapped to the saddle of her roan, a small, proud smile pulling at the corners of her lips.

Her auburn braid swished as she cantered down the indistinct path, keeping her eyes peeled for any source of trouble that may come her way. The adventurous spirit was not in a mood to have an easy day. SHe wanted conflict. She wanted a chance to prove herself.

Too bad the tree limb had other ideas.

She was on the ground, out of breath, and staring at the sky without a horse to accompany her before she had a chance to complete her daydream. Beautiful.

From her position on the ground, the bloodied man looked impossibly tall. Taylor was left with nothing to defend herself, save a small knife she kept tucked into her leather boot. Pushing herself to a seated position, she got her legs up underneath her, drawing the knife and tucking it into her belt before standing to face the injured man.

"You're going to have to be a tad more convincing," she said, spacing her feet for balance and turning her head to peer into the shadows. There was blood, but whether or not it was his or someone elses, she couldn't tell. "You come out here so I can see you, then I'll think about coming closer."

She stared at him for a long moment, steeling herself before she turned and focussed on his arms. With a surprisingly steady hand, she withdrew the knife from her belt and set it to his skin, near the center of one of the bulging 'veins'. "The farm I worked on," she began, determinedly slitting the skin before slipping her fingers in the wound and grasping the worm. It slipped, writhed, churning her stomach briefly. Slowly she started to pull the worm out from underneath his skin.

"We had problems with stuff like this all the time. If I had the right medicine I could give it to you to clear the parasites, but this works just as well." She continued to pull, occasionally nicking the worm into pieces and tossing them away with her opposite hand.

Ugh. This was so gross.

Shifting higher in his arm, she made another nick, and proceeded to remove another worm. "Let me know if this really bothers you," she murmured as she carefully worked on this new parasite.

He had a fever, and he was dehydrated. These things had taken just about everything they could from him. Turning to look over her shoulder, she emitted a sharp whistle through pursed lips, then turned back to him. Biting her lip, the young woman removed the last of the parasites from that arm, tossing the bits away and standing to kneel on his other side. "How did you get caught up in this mess?" she asked, her brow furrowing in concentration as she braced his arm, made another slit, and began to withdraw the parasite.

She continued to extract the second set of worms, cutting them up and tossing them off to the side to dry in the sun. She kept her head bent, avoiding his eye for the moment as she concentrated. "Will you need a ride anywhere after this?" she asked curiously as her horse came trotting up out of the brush. Good thing the dumb beast had a good sense of hearing.

"I was on my way into town anyway," she said quietly. "We can get something there to keep infection out."

She stared at him for a long moment.

"....Okay."

She finished with the parasites, brushing his arm off idly before taking a moment to look him over. "Is there anything else? I don't want to miss anything and have you falling off the back of my horse..."

Taylor nodded, standing and holding her hands out for him to help get him on his feet. "You can ride. I'll lead the horse along. Hurry and stand if you can, otherwise I'll have to bring the animal closer to you."

Funny thing was that she felt far less silly when she was actually helping him, rather than the way she felt when she was looking for an opportunity to be a hero. "I'm Taylor, by the way."

She was surprised to find him swinging himself up into the saddle, but the greatest surprise came when she attempted to grab the reins to lead, only to find herself suddenly lifted from the ground and placed in front of the man now known as Duke, with his bloodied arms encircling her waist in order to get at the reins.

She didn’t have a moment to protest. The day was becoming odder by the moment.

As they began to ride, she tried hard to avoid resting back against him, though his hulking figure made it difficult for her to do much more than just cling to the saddle-horn and try not to touch him. He didn’t seem to like that sort of touchy-feely business. She would either if she were a lone man feasted upon by leeches, with an attitude almost as sour as his smell.

She wouldn’t do much more than give him directions as they cantered out of the woods.

"I'm staying in an Inn." she replied, glancing back to him over her shoulder. "I can show you where I'm staying if that would be of any help to you..."

Part of her hoped that he'd stay in his own room, but there was something telling her that he was going to be stuck with her for a little bit, at least until he could get his bearings again. She eased them to a trot, coming down the cobblestone street before pulling up in front of the hotel she'd indicated.

"I'm staying here. If you don't like it we can go somewhere else..." she suggested.

When he tensed, so did she. She remained rigid, staring straight ahead as he hovered near her ear, expressing that he was going to be her companion for a little while, without so much as asking her if she had a dinner date or something of the sort. Resisting the urge to slap her hand to her forehead, Taylor followed after Duke, standing a good six inches below him when she finally came to a flat-footed position off to his right side.

"Sounds fine." she expressed, not really smiling, but not expressing any displeasure either.

"It's the second floor. I've got to put the horse up though, so you'll have to give me a minute.."

It didn't take the woman very long to turn the horse in. She paid the stable-boy with a single pence piece, then made her way back to the inn, hands slung into the pockets of her slacks, with her soft-soled boots barely making a sound as she entered the establishment and walked through the reception area. Coming to Duke's side, she idly tapped his arm, then walked past him, indicating that he should follow her.

"Will you be needing clothes too?" she asked curiously as she glanced back to him.

"Come along then," she said, coming to the second landing and walking to the end of the hall. From her pocket she withdrew a single brass key, inserting it into the lock and pushing the door inwards with a quick twist of the doorknob. The furnishings were simple enough, with a wash basin, a dresser, and two single-sleeper beds that had been made up with fresh sheets. A ratty old rug lay on the hardwood floor to protect from cold, but other than that, the room was pretty simply decorated.

"Here it is then," she said quietly, pointing to the bed he could take before turning back to face him. Her head tilted curiously to the side. "You alright?"

"Oh god..."

That was about what Taylor could manage to speak at that point. Rushing forward, she knelt at the man's side, pressing her palm to his forehead before tearing her hand away. Fever. He was burning with it. Mumbling under her breath, she jumped to her feet and ran over to the basin to get some clean clothes and water, collecting them in her arms and kneeling near him again so she could dampen his forehead.

Without much care for his clothing, she ripped his shirt, encouraging him to lie down flat on his back so she could spread the cool clothes along his broad chest.

"You just collapsed on my floor," she said seriously. "Don't push me away. The bathroom is down the hall, but I'm not even that sure that you can make it that far without falling over again. What can I get you that you need?" She sat back, delicately peeling back the clothes to go soak them again.

Men could be stubborn, that was for sure.

"Wait wait wait." She pushed him back so he was seated, then knelt across from him. "Let me help you get cleaned up. When you can walk, you can take a bath, okay? Last thing you need is to end up drowning in the tub anyway." She pursed her lips, then held out the cloth. "Sponge baths aren't horrible. It's something."

"Alright." He'd probably be able to feel her fingertips as she gently touched the collar. She didn't make a move to remove it, simply letting it be before shifting to wash down his arms and the sides of his rib cage. "You seem desperate though, putting yourself at the mercy of a stranger."

She hesitated, rinsing the cloth before moving up into his hairline, behind his ears, the way her mother used to wash her when she was small. After this, she'd leave him with the basin and let him have some privacy.
