Tazzerian Deltrude

A runner of the Gadget Hoverbike Gang, Tazz wants nothing more than to go home.

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by NotAFlyingToy

Groups

A ragtag group of hoverbikers from a world decimated by radiation and disease. They have come to Wing City by a fortunate mishap, and now seek salvation on Terra.

Description

Tazz hasn't had a lot of experience with hoverbikes; but he knew that the one rule to dodging the Scrapers for any length of time was to band together. This is what he told himself when he abandoned his small crew of sick and dying; him and twelve others like him, telling themselves it was for the good of the group, for the good of humanity, that they leave and find shelter.

Their faces when they discovered the underground cities were ones of pure shock and idealism, ones that would chip plaster off of the walls, had there been any to spare. They had spent their entire lives being rats in a maze, believing that they were the only people left alive in the aftermaths of two consecutive wars. Tazz was the only one of the twelve that wished to go back to their group, lead the sick and dying to the vast underground where it was safe from Scrapers. Scrapers couldn't find them, here. Scrapers couldn't see them.

But he needed money. He needed equipment. And it was of that need that he found Grennel.

Now, he's worked for Gadget for long enough to have a neat amount of food stored and funds tucked away. On the day that he was to go back and find his society, however, he found himself in Wing City, a place so far away from the civilization he knew that he has written off any hope of returning. He spends his days a hard, back-breaking worker, a man who is marching to an early grave with purpose.

He spends his days an atoner.

So begins...

Coffee and a donut.

Most people considered comfort food to be these simple, easily made meals where there are a lot of calories packed into small tidbits, where you could munch away and lose yourself in the taste of it. The young man who sat at the table, however, had no such notion of comfort food. His idea was something storebought, super sweet, and easily eaten; something dipped in sugar with sprinkles on it and a hot beverage that he could make as sweet or as bitter as he chose.

So. Coffee and a donut.

He hadn't seen his gang in a long, long time - not since they had found themselves here, in Wing City. It was hard to look at the surroundings without picturing smoldering skyscrapers and worrying about whether or not a cough would turn into the last breath you'd ever take. He was still getting used to the idea of readily available water - he still had three filled five litre bottles in his bike pouch - and he hadn't stopped reaching for his small revolver every time a person gave him more than a second's glance. Somehow, they lucked out, arriving here.

And yet...

He remembered the faces, dirt-smeared and heartbroken, when he promised them he'd return. And while he had such trouble adjusting to so many aspects of their new, "safe" life, one aspect of it he had swallowed easily - almost too easily.

He was never going home.

Tazz swatted at the woman's grip, but to no avail as the table tipped slightly, the coffee and beloved donut rolling to the floor. He gripped at the girl's wrists as she shook him once, allowing that small vice before he squeezed his bigger hands around hers and pushed backwards, his black shirt ripping slightly as her fingers refused to relinquish him.

"Gently does it." He hissed at her, one hand righting his spilled mug, a scowl on his face. Running his hand through his thin strands of blonde, he fixed her with his sharpest glare. "I've been around. Maybe I just wanted some time away from you, Braids." Over her shoulder, he nodded at both Jack and Ace, his stance utterly unapologetic for his absence.

"Have you guys checked out the city at all?"

Tazz nodded. "That's what I discovered, too." He muttered, rubbing his stubble-riddled chin. "Damndest thing. Not a reading of any kind that I've seen, and I've flown out pretty far in the two weeks I've had. There are a few pockets of radiation, and it seems like the beginnings of some kind of conflict around here, but other than the usual radiation levels, it's almost as if they threw our planet into the spin cycle."

Turning to Tora, he couldn't hide a smug grin as he nudged her with his elbow. "So. I guess you missed me, huh?"

Tazz bit back a smile. "In her defence," he began, "Fucktard is way catchier than Sharar. And it might be because you have such a winning personality, Tora." He gave her another smartass grin, feeling slightly lifted now that he was surrounded by his friends.

Growing slightly more serious, he glanced at the surrounding bar, before leaning close to the other Gadget members. "I know what you mean, though. I was nearly attacked when I was in Eden City a few days ago. Some guy was claiming that I owed him money, and warned me to 'stay away from the slots'. It's apparently gambling slang - you know, like dice?"

He mimed rolling a dice for them, before waving it off. "Point is, there's something fucked up going on. Like, maybe we have evil twins waltzing around this world, and we're destined to fight them and absorb their energy. That, or everyone's a moron. Right now, I'd call it a toss-up."

Tazz mouthed 'Coffee and a Boston Cream' to Tora as she flagged down a server, and nodded his affirmative when she asked if he had seen any other kind of gadget. It didn't make sense; why would two Gadgets switch places on the bat of an eye? Why would that happen? Granted, the fact that they had travelled to a seemingly different dimension would also not make sense, but now they were talking dual universes? There was, potentially, a different Tazz in another place?

Back where they used to be?

As the last finger was up, Tazz quietly picked up his mug, letting the last dribbles of coffee drip to his tongue.

"No family." He said, with equal hushed tones, before placing the cup down and sliding it across the table, away from him. "None whatsoever."

Tazz leaned his face onto his hand, watching the other Gadgeteers discuss the unusual circumstanced. "Not a soul," he shot at Tora before the conversation continued onward, his thumb tapping lightly against the table as they went over all the different things between their home and this new, strange place.

"Does anyone feel like this place is familiar?" He asked, pointedly. "Any senses of deja vu? Anything like that? I can't shake this feeling, like... like we're where we're supposed to be, but.... not- ugh."

He gestured frantically, frustrated at his inability to communicate his thoughts. "It's just.... weird. Different. I dunno."

Tazz nodded seriously, glancing around at them. Shooting a look at Tora, he quickly grabbed her instep, shoved her foot off of the table. "This is a place where we eat." He said, in slight annoyance, before glancing at Ace.

"I know what you mean. I spent nearly five hours just sitting on some hill in a city - called it Eden. I couldn't help but feel like this... vague... belonging. Or something."

Tazz stuck his tongue out at Tora good naturedly, before glancing towards Ace. "Hey, I'm all ears for suggestions, bones." Tazz said, casually, motioning towards the other biker's slim build. "Me, I'm just going to sit here and order another coffee. If somebody," he glanced pointedly at Tora, "would allow me to drink it this time, I'd appreciate it."

He glanced at the other three, hesitant. "There's another thing that we're overlooking." He began, slowly. "What if... we're not really here? What if this is some Scraper prison, and we're all waiting for execution? They were getting harder and harder to keep track of." He pointed out.

"What if we're all pretty much dead?"

Tazz's arms sprang towards the taller woman, grabbing her lapels just as she grabbed his, his own face twisted into a rare rage. "Don't go off on me, you fucking pratt. Did I say they would allow it!? What I'm saying is, maybe they don't have a goddamn choice. Besides; you got a better reason for being reported in the middle of fucking nowhere?"

He wrenched his arm down again, slamming her hands off of his shirt, backpedaling away from her. "You need to check yourself, Tora. We're not in the wild fucking west anymore - leaping at someone because they disagree with you could have you killed or worse."

Tazz glanced towards the wait staff - who were all staring at them - before turning his gaze back towards Tora. "Let her go," He said, cooly, composed. He was ice. An ice cube. Nevermind that his hands were shaking in anger and his head was pounding with the effort it took to just flip his lid at her.

"You could've led with that, Tora." He pointed out. "But all I know is that I was making a short run, and all of a sudden I'm here. What if they somehow got into gadget? What if that device led them to us? What if the Scrapers are pushing around the base as we speak?" He couldn't help himself; the image was too strong. Ace, Jack, Tora, and himself, strapped to tables, being fed an illusion as Phoenix cut into their sternums, saw what made them tick.

"You can't live as if you're fuckin' invincible anymore. Or could you?" He muttered, rubbing his jaw. "Does it all matter? Does any of it?"

Tazzerian Deltrude shrugged at that. "It's a theory, Tora. It's not like you need to take my word as gospel. I don't see you fronting any suggestions as to where we are. All I see you doing, yet again, is flying off the handle because something doesn't go your way."

Sighing, the boy flopped a few bills down onto the countertop, glaring up at the girl. "It's always like this. You, freaking out and everyone else just allowing you to. Well, I'm starting to get really, really tired of this whole attitude you have going on, Tora. If we're truly in some new world, you'd better smarten the hell up."

He took a step towards her, then another, watching her intently, now in range of her fists. "It'd suck to lose you to some brawler, that - heaven forbid - can take you on. It'd... well, it'd really suck."

He folded his arms awkwardly, scuffing one of his boots against the linoleum.

Tazz watched her leave, a faint smile on his face, even as he reached a hand to rub at his shoulder, knowing that bruises from Tora usually stuck around for a little while. He shook his head, wondering at the woman who more embodied rampant destruction than he had ever seen.

Tazz nodded, rubbing at his chin. "You mean you've been able to have bright ideas before the injury, Bones? You're such a glass house; always hurting and shit."

He shook his head at the smaller boy, before glancing at Jack. "I still have my comm, and I still got the bike. I guess we should look for Grendel, see if we can rustle him up? But... I should probably keep an eye on Tora."

He said the words too fast, with a bit of a flush. But hell, if these two didn't know about his little... infatuation, he'd eat his shirtsleeves.

Tazz waved, too, before collecting his ruined donut, examining it thoroughly before tossing it back on the table. Sighing through clenched teeth, the Runner marched out in search of the Tornado.

The company in question waited patiently to speak, his own workboots, more scuffed and dirtier than his female companion's, scraping idly on the pavement as he faced her. He knew her for her level head, her wise and easy advice in most situations that he had found himself in. She and he were friends forged in loss and silence, in the catastrophic circumstances that threw all of Gadget together in a violent clash of steel and personalities. Idly, he thought of Tora - a common follow up to the word 'Violence' - and wondered if he were just wasting time here, in this life.

A new place, a new world, and a new opportunity. That's how he wanted to look at the situation they all found themselves in. A chance to truly come into their own, right past mistakes. So many people fought and clawed to erase their pasts, but the people of Gadget were handed it on a silver platter. No radiation, no eking out an existence. Running water, shelter, hot meals, and a large population.

So why did they feel so alone?

Clearing his throat, the young man directed his gaze upon her, smiling slightly. "Midge,"

Tazz watched the movement with a faint flick of his eyes, a small frown creasing his lips, even as she smiled at him. "Not much of anything, really."

He glanced skyward, taking in the atmosphere of the city, the way the walls shimmered and shined. He'd never seen such an intact place, and the thought of it crippled him with fear. So many buildings, so much time for things to fall apart. He envisioned the city war torn, destroyed, acidic and melting away into rust and cesspools, a mere fragment and a remnant of what it once was. The thought made him queasy.

"Are you adjusting okay?" He asked, stalling.

Normally, Tazz would be able to counter the barb with a quick stab of his own humour. Normally, he would've playfully swatted at her sleeve, murmured something about how easy she had fitted into the group, and slump beside her. Normally, he wouldn't feel like he was walking on eggshells around her - around any Gadget member - since they arrived.

He started to speak, but the words died in his throat, trailing off in a keening sound that wasn't quite a sigh, and wasn't quite a laugh. "Yeah." He muttered, kicking at a rock again, his hands in his pockets. "I don't think any of us are anymore."

Tazz smiled, grateful at her mentioning of the memory. "That little shit," he said, affectionately. "I knew he couldn't handle the modifications, but he insisted on trying to outrace Ace." He rolled his eyes, quirking his lips at her. "Scouts," he muttered, as if that explained the behavior.

Sobering as she did, he nodded. "I know we will, but... Gadget's been a force for so long, now. We've influenced everyone around us, built up this society in the middle of nowhere." Ash and ruin. "And now, that's all gone. We're just another gang now. How many more hits can we take before we start to hit the canvas?"
