Teo Calypsi

A water spirit who has made his home in Wing City Lake.

0 · 694 views · located in Wing City Lake

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by Teo

Description

Teo is a kind and curious young spirit, relatively new to the world. He is fond of nature and animals, and enjoys befriending other beings outside of his domain. Travelling too far from his lake (more than a few miles) is unpleasant for him and reduces his powers, but he can do it.

He is akin to a naiad, or water nymph/sprite of legend - a water spirit or lesser demigod of water. Like those of mythos, his water can have magical medicinal properties. The more sexual side of water nymphs is however far less prominent in him. He furthermore has elemental control over water, and can take upon a water form bodily. He is immortal, and can only be killed by the corruption of his home.

In the past, naiads and water spirits were believed to be descended from Poseidon or the water titans Oceanus and Tethys. However, genealogy for such ancient, ageless creatures is easily overstated. He is vaguely related to a Water Goddess called Meridia, but he only knows this from conversations with other water spirits/sprites, and has never directly interacted with her. He came to Wing City Lake recently after being forced from his previous home by another water spirit who claimed it for his own.

So begins...

Teo had been travelling for a long time, through the forests and along the roads of the world. It would have been a lonely journey, were it not for the companions he had found along the way. The wildlife: birds, bugs and critters, had all lent him aid as he went, telling him what they knew of where he might find a suitable new home. They had also been company, to share in stories of stashes of nuts or magnificent nests - the little things that were so special to them, so wondrous in their eyes were by that very merit, of equal value to him. They had told him of a lake near to a city, corrupted with waste and poison. The spirit who had lived there before had been killed by a strange substance, leaving it unoccupied. He resolved to investigate, to see whether he could make this lake his home by restoring it to its purity.

He arrived on the shore of the lake in the middle of the day. His cerulean hair caught the wind lightly as he paused at its edge, looking out over it with wide pale blue eyes. Barefooted, but dressed in a simple white shirt and blue jeans in order to blend in with humans in his travels and not attract undue attention, he looked like he was there perhaps for contemplation or reverie, but in fact it was a far more vital mission. Without a body of water to call home, he would wither and die. Water demigods were nothing without water for all their mythical abilities.

Teo knelt at the edge of the water and extended his senses into it. He sensed the corruption within immediately - the waste, the contamination. Most of all he sensed an unusual and alarming substance, one that seemed to writhe and bite at the magical energies of the air with murderous intent. It was a deadly trap, he realised, for one like him without the prior warning from animals. But since he was aware of it, he could cleanse it.

He closed his eyes and took a relaxing intake of air, using his powers to touch the water and interact with it. It cried out for release from this disgusting taint, and he would grant it that wish. The water nearest him began to glow with a brilliant light-blue light. The light spread outwards in ripples from the shore where he knelt until it was washing across the entire lake, creating a light-show that was visible for miles around. The alien substance, the junk, the waste was gripped by the old, powerful magic and expelled, ejected and annihilated till naught but particles in the wind remained, carried harmlessly away, far too spread out and diluted to do any damage now.

He was drained now though. He'd used the last of his power in this endeavour, and with a small sigh he collapsed forwards into the now perfectly clear water. He began to sink. But his entry into the body of water completed the process he had been aiming to achieve. Silvery light surrounded him as he descended, catching him upon unnatural currents. With a gasp, his eyes opened once more, infused with the same light. His senses exploded and his fatigue was banished as he became one with the lake, fusing with it and being born anew. He claimed it as his home and with it his power was restored, and his continued survival ensured.

Teo resurfaced a few moments later, drenched but obviously at ease with the wetness. He smiled. He was finally home.

Teo blinked towards the girl who had arrived on the scene, smiling to her. Currents of water swirled under him, lifting him upwards from where he floated and carrying him towards the shoreline where she stood. The water crested under him in an oddly shaped wave upon which he sat daintily. As he had entered the water, his clothing had dissolved away to be replaced by what was more traditional for spirits. Instead of clothing, spirals of sparkling opaque water trailed around his body, preserving his modesty.

"Hello!" Teo said, smiling brightly. "I cleansed the water of pollution, so that I could make it my home. I live here now! This lake and I are one." He leaned onto his flowing bed of water, "My name is Teo, I am a water spirit, or naiad, or elemental. People call me a lot of things. They're all mostly right. It's nice to meet you! Who are you?"

"A nymph?" Teo tilted his head curiously, "I have been called that too, although I am under the impression traditionally nymphs are only female."

The water spirit grinned. "Even the most savage of animals can be calmed once it understands you are neither prey nor predator!" he said, nodding his head. Where his feet trailed down to touch the water's surface, fish had gathered to circle around him, curious towards their new host. "I wouldn't call myself famous. I was known by locals at my last home, but now I am here? I expect nobody knows me at all."

He gestured down at the water, "You should drink! It'll make you feel better." And it would, too. Now that Teo had made his home here, the water had gained slightly magical properties - it would revitalise and cleanse illness in those that drank it, should he so wish it.

Teo giggled, "Oh stop it, you," he joked at the compliment, grinning broadly. "You'll make me blush. Water is like, ninety five percent of what I do. I'd better be good at it!" He flicked his hair, sending the water in it splashing away in a spray of sparkles that drifted back towards the lake and drying it in an instant - a somewhat vain display of showboating, perhaps, but Teo did revel in looking nice.

"I speak with the animals, rather than control them yes. It is in their instinct to attack prey, or be aggressive to fend off predators. If you can communicate both your lack of weakness and your lack of hostility, they are unlikely to pit themselves against you." The water spirit tilted his head in thought. "There are some creatures with more malevolence, of course. More unnatural ones, or more sapient ones. They are more dangerous!"

Teo watched July's display of magic with interest, peering into the mirror for a few moments before it vanished. "I've not seen magic quite like that before," he said, tilting his head. "My magic isn't the most potent for fighting, but water is to my beck and call!" He gestured with an arm, water surging up from the lake to twirl around it smoothly like an airborne stream.

Glancing around, he shrugged his shoulders with a small smile. "I have to admit, I don't know for sure if it's safe! You saw, I only just got here. But now that I've merged with the lake, I'm aware of everything around it. It doesn't seem like there's anything dangerous here!" He smiled, "Feel free to stay! I'm not one of the nasty spirits who gets angry tells people to get off their lawn!"

He leaned forwards again, resting his chin on the backs of his hands. "Tell me more about your dream magic! What sort of things can you do with dreams? I never had to put so much effort into my own powers... they're something I was created with, as natural to use as another limb."

Teo listened with interest as July explained, staying quiet until she finished. "Well, in answer to your initial question," he said finally, "I can feel you in a way, but not so literally as touch. I sense the presences of everything here, their natures and their emotions, that sort of thing!"

His eyes seemed to glaze over for a moment, as though he stopped seeing, though he continued to speak. "There are a lot of fish here, lots of birds and critters. Something special is at the centre of the lake, on the island. I can observe everything, but in a more ethereal sense than true sight."

Returning to his normal self, Teo smiled. "And your abilities sound cool! I don't often suffer nightmares, but to have control over what you dream and what others dream must be great fun!" He giggled, "I can only begin to imagine the fun games and tricks you could pull!"

Smiling brightly, Teo nodded his head. "Water, the sky - blue's got as much life to it as green!" he agreed. He thought for a moment on July's words, expression turning ponderous. "I don't think much about the future," he admitted with a shrug, "I don't know what I'm going to do forever either! Probably just have fun!" He glanced in the direction of Wing City's towering walls, a short distance away from the lake. "I'm going to go into the city at some point, to have a look around! I like spending time around people, especially ones with exciting lives!"

He glanced up at the air then. "Perhaps not as exciting as whatever's happening up there. There's all sorts of things falling from the sky! There was a forest fire in the woods nearby because of a falling spaceship! I don't really like wars and fighting very much." Finally Teo's eyes fell to the island at the centre. "There's some sort of temple there, I think. Abandoned and old, though. Mostly a ruin."

"Having fun sounds like a good idea. Perhaps I will get in on this kind of action, too! Fun can be so varied," July responded to Teo with a playful smile. Her gaze followed the direction of where the boy's eyes were drawn; to the city. "You and I have both yet to visit, huh.." The city's appearance somehow felt ominous to July, as she didn't much like these cities of higher technology and what-not. Her favorite places were forests and beautiful landscapes which stretched widely and seemingly indefinitely outwards. Her imagination began to flutter on this thought, seeing dancing flowers blown into the sky and a beautiful, warm and powerful sun screening the land. Momentarily, she snapped back to reality. "Ah.. and I do love temples. Do you dare imagine who might have been there before you?"

July's expression seemed to dull a little into a sort of pained one as she listened about the forest incident. She however went on to address Teo. "Exciting? I suppose sporadic and unpredictable events are quite exciting! And that also must depend on what kind of people exist there. Ever since I ventured out of my birth territory I have come to understand that some strange and powerful technologies exist along side many beings. War seems ever-present, and the kind of spaceship you describe ..quite common, isn't it." She paused, before gently lifting her hand somewhat in front of her as a n open gesture to the boy consisting of water. "Would you be bothered if I accompanied you? I have nothing planned."

"Of course not!" Teo said, nodding his head as he hopped forwards from his watery perch. The curved platform of water finally splashed into the lake as he left it, the fish scattering. When his feet touched the land, the opaque water around his naked form had already shifted to dress him again in the simple shirt and jeans he had arrived in. "We can flow and drift as we please, after all!"

He skipped away, then, already merrily dancing his way towards the path to the city. "Come on! Let's go!" he called back at July.

Teo had split up from July shortly after entering the city, and his curiosity found him poking his head into a Diner that he came across along the main street. His curiosity... and his stomach. The water spirit sniffed in the aroma of freshly baked pie and smiled, slipping inside. His bare feet padded on the tiled floor as he made his way to the display case, placing a pale hand onto the glass and peering longingly at the pastries.

If only he had any money. Maybe if he could establish his lake as a wishing lake, he would be able to start amassing a wealth of small change like many well or pond-based spirits did. Wishing lakes weren't a very common thing though, so he wasn't sure how he'd go about that. He huffed, blowing a strand of cerulean hair out of his face in disgruntlement and leaning his forehead onto the glass to stare in with longing, slowly blinking his bright blue eyes.

Like always, at seemingly every popular establishment around town, Fedelia came out of the kitchen, holding her order booklet, with her apron, and a neat little uniform that dropped below her knees in a skirt.

Fedelia, once a popular bartender at Gambit's, had moved on, and she had moved to Canti's and the Teahouse for the time being. She brushed a strand of white hair behind her pointed ear, smiling at everyone who had come in.

"Welcome to Canti's Diner!" she said, "I'll be right with the, ah, bulk of you in a moment. We didn't expect this much business so soon..."

She scuttled over to Fisk, the first person who had entered, and asked, "Hello, is there anything you'd like to drink, and would you like a menu...?"

Meanwhile, Ariane, who watched two other very neat figures come in, managed a smirk. "So I guess this is the new place to go, hmm?" she asked them both, Selfi and Teo, from her booth.

Teo dragged his face to the side over the glass with a distinct squeak, peering over at Ariane when the woman spoke to him. The young looking boy seemed confused. He straightened, prying himself free from the display case and pointing at himself questioningly as if to ask whether she had meant him. "The new place to go?" he asked, "I don't know what you mean, I'm sorry. I'm new here. I was just passing by and I smelled something delicious, so I came in to have a look!"

His eyes slipped back to the pies and his stomach made an audible rumble, eliciting a giggle from him as his hand came to his mouth. "Oops! Excuse me!" he exclaimed.

"I don't have any money, though." Teo said with a small smile, shrugging his shoulders. "I don't really need to eat. I just get hungry when I'm reminded how nice food tastes!" He walked over to stand nearer to Ariane so as not to be calling across the room. "I'm sorry to hear about the bar that closed."

Teo smiled warmly and offered Ariane a hand to shake. "I'm Teo, I live down at the lake. I just moved in! It's nice to meet you."

"That's very kind of you!" Teo grinned widely, sitting down across from Ariane. "I shouldn't think you need to watch your figure, though, you're perfectly thin!" Crossing his hands in his lap, he examined Ariane's weapons with curiosity. "You carry a lot of weaponry," he commented, "Can I ask why? Do you have a dangerous job, or a lot of enemies?"

Teo blinked in wide-eyed surprise at Ariane's words. "Oh, wow! That sounds both exciting and inconvenient at the same time." He laughed, "I can't wait to meet some of them!" Being akin to a spirit, a sprite or a nymph, Teo enjoyed his fair share of mischief, and had little to fear from violence. This meant that what might be threatening and dangerous for someone else, was nothing more than a game to him.

"I came from a place where things like that were much less common, at least in the cities. It was mostly just humans! I suppose I won't draw as much attention for having oddly coloured hair, then, considering what else is out here!"

Teo tilted his head in interest. "Even gods?" he asked. He wasn't quite a god, rather closer to a demigod or immortal spirit, but anything that could kill a god... "That's very impressive. I'll have to be extra careful!"

Teo's definition of careful was very different to other people's, however. He was confident that he was largely safe. Unless someone went out of their way to corrupt and destroy his lake, he could just regenerate there! When Fedelia approached, the young boy glanced slightly tentatively at Ariane before he spoke up. "Ah, could I get some of the pie? One of the sweet ones?" he asked, "If that's okay, that is, Ariane?"

Teo laughed enthusiastically, "Yep! They're the best! Whenever I'm visiting a town or a city I always end up getting ice creams or donuts or something like that! Sugary sweet things are my favourite product of human civilisation, I'm pretty sure!"

He shrugged his shoulders. "I've not given anyone any reason to try and blink me out of existence! That's my strategy."

"Another part of this planet, elsewhere on Aslund... I came from a lake near to another city. I was forced out of there, though." Teo looked sad for a moment, but it passed very quickly and his regular cheerful smile returned. "But now I live at the lake just outside Wing City! I got rid of all the pollution and the nasty anti-magic chemical in the water, then moved in!"

He paused, realising that probably didn't make much sense without context. "I should probably explain. I'm a water spirit, like a naiad or elemental. I have to claim a body of water as my home. Another spirit forced me out of my last home, then I found Wing City lake. The strange substance that was there killed the last spirit which lived there, so it was free for me!"

It wasn't long after the fire sparked that it drew the attention of one of the denizens of the land nearby. The waters of Wing City Lake rippled, a series of waves converging together before spiralling upwards in a brief geyser of water that slowly formed into the shape of a boy. Teo blinked up at the column of smoke and the orange glow in the distance, deep in the woods nearby his waters. The lake spirit frowned, the expression almost foreign upon his otherwise near-perpetually cheerful face. He drifted across the lake's surface towards the bank, forming more solidly as he went - becoming less transparent, more solid and human.

By the time he reached the shore, he was fully manifested and clothed, his aquamarine hair dripping wetly as his bare foot touched down on the sand. He set forwards at a quick, determined pace. He sensed something very wrong about this fire, something unnatural and dark.

And even if it wasn't, Teo hated fire. It was too dry, and hot. It was not a naiad's friend.

It didn't take long for him to come upon the outer edges of the blaze, nor to swiftly douse the foliage in a powerful spray of water, pulled seemingly from nowhere. The young boy drifted through the fire, putting it out as he walked, until he came across what appeared to be some form of portal, with what appeared to be creatures of magma walking from it.

"Hey!" Teo called, "What are you doing? Can't you see you're destroying the forest?"
