Description

Image
A TOAST to the Fools!
Pierrot, Pantaloon,
Harlequin, Clown,
Merry-Andrew, Buffoon--
Touchstone and Triboulet--all of the tribe.--
Dancer and jester and singer and scribe.
We sigh over Yorick--(unfortunate fool,
Ten thousand Hamlets have fumbled his skull!)--
But where is the Hamlet to weep o'er the biers
Of his brothers?
And where is the poet solicits our tears
For the others?
They have passed from the world and left never
a sign,
And few of us now have the courage to sing
That their whimsies made life a more livable
thing--
We, that are left of the line,
Let us drink to the jesters--in gooseberry wine!

Then here's to the Fools!
Flouting the sages
Through history's pages
And driving the dreary old seers into rages--
The humbugging Magis
Who prate that the wages
Of Folly are Death--toast the Fools of all ages!
They have ridden like froth down the whirlpools
of time,
They have jingled their caps in the councils of
state,
They have snared half the wisdom of life in a
rhyme,
And tripped into nothingness grinning at fate--
Ho, brothers mine,
Brim up the glasses with gooseberry wine!

Though the prince with his firman,
The judge in his ermine,
Affirm and determine
Bold words need the whip,
Let them spare us the rod and remit us the
sermon,
For Death has a quip

Of the tomb and the vermin
That will silence at last the most impudent lip!
Is the world but a bubble, a bauble, a joke?
Heigho, Brother Fools, now your bubble is broke,
Do you ask for a tear?--or is it worth while?
Here's a sigh for you, then--but it ends in a smile!
Ho, Brother Death,
We would laugh at you, too--if you spared us the
breath!

With a giggle, Terun slipped through the shadows under the great library doors. The boy vampire flickered from shadow to shadow, not bothering to turn on any of the lamps or light fixtures. High above a chandelier burned too dim to cast enough light for most mortals to see. He liked it best that way.

"Neriiisssaaaaa," Terun called, gravitating toward a table piled high with books. It seems Akio purged the science section again.

Nerissa went right though the door into the dark room. She lost herself looking at shelf upon shelf of books much more then she had ever seen not even in her old coven...

Nerissa was broken from her thoughts when the boy yelled out her name.

"Shh! It's a library!" Nerissa play scolded putting a finger up to her lips.

But part of her worried about who else might hear them... and her face likely showed it as she turned to glance at the books. "I like the stories about magic and nature...gods and myths... and history... what about you?" she asked the boy as her eyes glaced around the shadows.

Manik Chakor set a large golden envelope down on the table. Inside were a selection of smaller golden envelopes. He withdrew about a third of these and whisked away

Daemala Tauvyr arrived and had a seat before the golden envelope. It was a delight they had arrived on time! She didn't trust her messenger, despite being a fellow member of the Detente. He was a slimeball. Smaller than she had expected. When she picked it up it was the right weight. Pretty heavy- but lighter than the full order. Manik had followed his instructions, for once, all except one detail.

The envelopes were supposed to be silver.

She took in a deep breath and leaned back, one hand slowly migrating to the other. She absentmindedly twist the ring. Zosimos was in custody, and she was the Queen of the Vampires. A laugh escaped her lips. Casren was gone. She didn't get sad.
The castle was hers to rule!
...duh.

Daemala sliced open one of the envelopes with a stiletto nail colored blood and let it fall to the table. Out she fished a gold piece of starched fabric, which served as the invitation. It was impeccably embroidered with flowery lettering. She held it delicately aloft and grinned. Oh, this was going to be lovely.
