Description

'I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand-
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep- while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?!
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?!

From first night's hour I have not been
As others were; I have not seen
As others saw; I could not bring
My passions from a common spring.
From the same source I have not taken
My sorrow; I could not awaken
My heart to joy at the same tone;
And all I loved, I loved alone.
Then- in my youth, in the dawn
Of a most stormy life- was drawn
From every depth of good and ill
The mystery which binds me still:
From the torrent, from the fountain,
From the red cliff of the mountain,
From the suns that round me rolled
In their autumn tints of gold,
From their lightning in the sky
As it passed me flying by,
From the thunder and the storm,
And the cloud that took the form
(When the rest of Heaven was blue)
Of a demon in my view.

It was me, and it was you.'

So begins...

It had been, perhaps, an average day, as such a world went. The sun had shined, occasionally mottled by the touch of clouds, and for the most part the breeze blew soft but true. There was little that he could find to complain about. Perhaps it was hot, but he did not find it so - rather he enjoyed such mild weather, when he had the chance for it. One could find him seated in this place of garden of greenery as one or two others were, though with the waning light many had left this place for their homes and hearths. Slowly the place grew more lonely, and he couldn't blame them for leaving.

For, while he rested there, no birds sung, and no crickets chirped. It was a peaceful, if off-setting, scene, though one would hardly think that the robed figure on one of the many benches would have anything to do with this. More than anything one might think him begging for money, and simply taking a break from haggling those better off than him.

That wasn't to say he wasn't here to beg, of course, but perhaps for something other than money.

With a sigh he remained, arms crossed with barely a whisper of movement in his garments - rag-tag robes and simple shoes decorated his feet - as he shifted his position ever so slightly. He would stay here for some time, as one could feel that there was something to this place, this world, that would keep him here for a little longer, at the least.

The dreams.

A young man, more sharply dressed than most of his age, scratched his sandy hair as he made his way through the gardens. There was much to admire, but he didn't see any of it. His mind's eye was filled with visions from last night. Leftover fragments from another strange peek into the realm of insanity. Darkness was falling again and he would do anything to procrastinate what was sure to be another nightmare ridden rest.

He shoved his hands into pressed trousers. A voice swam from ear to ear, female, young. Younger than he, by enough for the troublesome voice to worry him. It was like a memory, but it wasn't. He could hear her but he couldn't. As frustrating as it was, what was more frustrating was the image that appeared when he the voice sang through. It was of that girl.

Coming to a stop he settled down near another man, perplexed in his own devices. Everything got more and more complex, and he was leaving tomorrow. He wanted to forget it all and go back to being who he was, when he was, wherever that was. Who even know anymore?! Pushing it all to the back of his mind he turned his eyes to the rag-tag type and offered a smile.

The figure remained, not taking note of Gareth at first, his mind elsewhere as the second figure took a seat upon the bench as well. The first had been there for some time, perhaps since that morning, and it was the first time that any had come so close. There was something about this one, this new one, that drew a cautious, investigative glance from the robed one, looking over to Gareth's knees with a knotted brow.

There were others who were troubled, of course, to say that there were not would be a grave lie, as he himself had some issues, but this one's trouble seemed different - addled. There was a quality to it that hampered the air around him, that prodded at the mind in a way that attracted just a hint of curiosity, that let one know that everything simply wasn't what it seemed. A curious gaze examined the other's knee, then slowly up his form until it crept into his own ear.

That lingering sound, a feminine whisper.

There seemed to be whispers, voices, that surrounded them, barely audible but just enough that one might tell they were a voice, as the one with the robe opened his mouth. The whispers ceased just as he put sound to his lips, an old voice speaking quite plainly.

"... what is wrong?"

Gareth's vision had faded as his eyes slipped to the grass. So many memories that weren't there, shouldn't be there. Dreams blurring with realities. Why was she in his mind like this? Why was she there, talking to him? At least during the day she didn't scream. That was the worst.

He nearly jumped out of his skin when the stranger addressed him. He hadn't felt the eyes crawl up him, or perhaps he had and associated the feeling elsewhere. Either way, there he gawked for a moment until he could composed himself.

"Uh," Gareth snapped his jaw shut. Was it obvious something was wrong? "Nothing, I mean," How obvious was it, "It's a beautiful night."

A completely unconvincing argument, stupid really. A beautiful night? He almost cringed to himself, instead forcing out a weak smile.

Perhaps to one unlike he it would have been less noticeable, less audible, but the other could not help but hear. He didn't mean to eavesdrop, of course, it wasn't his business to, but if there was some way that he might help, then he would offer it. The other waited patiently for Gareth to compose himself, figuring that his mind might be cluttered with more important matters than speaking with him.

A beautiful night. The other looked up at that, to the stars that peppered the night sky above the both of them, the barely-visible band of the Milky Way in a purplish band across it. It was, in its own way, beautiful - a forest, a realm of infinite possibility that one might only see for a short time on a world like this one. Nighttime was a special thing for these Terrans, for many beings across all of existence, and he supposed it was special for him too.

Though he had lifted his face to address the heavens in silent contemplation, little light still fell upon his visage, its shape kept hidden by the lack of definition.

"Beautiful." He repeated Gareth's word, letting it sit and roll off his tongue. How rarely he had used the word. All the stars were beautiful, every nook and cranny of it all that he could find with his eyes there, the night sky unfurled before them. This garden too, the plants and the trees and the birds and the bees, and even this other beside him proved to hold a hint of beauty.

"Why did you lie to me?"

Gareth too turned his face to the stars. So, so many stars. He would be on one of them soon, he supposed, safe from this mad planet. Where did all the years go? Gareth could swore it was yesterday a sword balanced in his hand. Today, it was a useless enough trade. Dangerous, they said. But, tomorrow. Would he ever see her again, among all those stars? How many of them were planets, anyway?

"Huh?" It took a moment for the question to register, Gareth staring quizzically at the shabby man, but when it did the he blinked and looked away in a manner of shock. He was even more taken aback at this point than before, one could say flustered. He did lie, and he was caught in it. Why should I have to tell you anything? The thought defiantly crossed Gareth's mind, he pushed it away.

"I-I'm sorry?" He was feigning ignorance. It worked back in the court, what court? He shook his head as more visions of grand castles flashed in his mind, followed by images of thousands of rats. "I meant no offense, sir, ah..."

The vagabond remained staring at the heavens, trying to recognize the stars from his memory, constellations both familiar and alien to the Terran people lingering within his mind. Some of them he had visited, at one point or another, but there was still so very much that he had yet to see, now that he had the time to travel. Of course he had asked Gareth as to his statement, and its false nature, but still some part of him lingered on that word, the one used in conjunction with that rare adjective.

Night.

But it was better that he didn't think of that now, with this one - this Gareth - as the hood turned again back down to the Earth and to his companion, the only one who dared risk his attention. "There was none to be taken." For Gareth truly meant none by it, after all, why would he? It was a simple attempt to keep his business his own, and that was the nature of these Terrans, even when they were broadcasting it to the world.

"I simply asked the reason." The whispers came again, perhaps as some manifestation as to his verbal contemplation. "For something is wrong, isn't there?"

He could hear it.

The memories throbbed against his skull. She was calling to him, then laughing, then calling, then screaming, then sitting in front of him, on a pillar, at the ruins...

"Ah," His hands were clammy, he looked down at them. He looked at his lap, then everywhere but the stranger beside him. How did he know? More memories, more dreams. Where did one stop and where the the other begin? He couldn't even tell anymore. Gareth sat still, staring at the ground. Then he turned his eyes towards the stranger. They snapped back to the ground, his ears hot.

"Something..." He began, hoarse in the voice. Why was he suddenly so nervous? She had the dreams too. That just made it weirder, and what if he never saw her again? He had to see her soon, but before tomorrow? Suddenly, Gareth paled. The voices in his head, the memories and whispers, they were more than just dreams. "Yes," He said carefully, "Ah, very, actually, but..." He hadn't the foggiest idea what, come to think of it. What was he thinking of again?

A scream pierced his conscious, Gareth flinched and grabbed his forehead. It was her voice, and it was his name, and there was no doubting it was a memory.

The wanderer looked over the man, watching Gareth as he struggled with his mind and his memories - ones that the other seemed unsure as to whether they were his own. He was in pain, physical and abstract at the same time, and the other wished to help Gareth, were it that he could. Hands he held tempted to touch the other, to try and ease what pain he felt. But he withheld such a thing, figuring it for the best, at least for now.

There was no jump when Gareth flinched so, clutching at his head, the other simply looking over him as he struggled still, and very gently a hand came to Gareth's shoulder, afraid to set itself there. For Gareth was not the only one here who struggled with his memory. The Vagabond, however, struggled with memories that were all too clear.

Lightly did the wrapped hand fall on Gareth's shoulder, the soft touch more akin to a father's than a stranger's.

"... can I help?"

"Ahh, uhhh," He felt the touch and rocked a bit, unsure of how to feel or what to think. The scream still echoed, but it wasn't there anymore. Instead whispers of the past rose and fell. Nothing had been sure, ever since that day...

"I don't know," Gareth said it and settled. He turned his eyes to the other man, swimming with uncertainty. Could this man help? Stranger things have happened. Have they?
