Admitting defeat and deciding professional boxing wasn't for him, he enlisted with the Forsworn Mercenaries, acquiring a taste for combat. However, during a black operation on the planet Marva, his team met an unexpected and grim fate at the hands of his partner, Jax, who had been aiding the very government they had been hired to topple, feeding them information about their clients. Met by a firing squad, Thanos and his team were gunned down and left for dead. Emerging from the blood-stained field alive but in critical condition, he was able to find aid and was nursed back to health. Upon recovery, he set out to find Jax, eventually coming face to face with his former ally on the planet Hamon. There, he confronted Jax, eventually putting a bullet between the traitor's eyes. Thanos then set a course for Terra, settling in Wing City and establishing himself as a vigilante.
