The Kingdom of Asylia functions as an empire, though their people find the distinction to be very important. To an Asylian, an Empire is something to be hated and fought against, but a Kingdom is respectable. Noble Even.

Description

Image
It Is Those Who Do Not Seek Immortality That Eventually Find It

Tolend Dathar is a Legend among the Asylian People. Legends tell of a hero by that name whos task it was to protect the young princess, during the darkest days of the kingdom. Against more then a thousand men that hero stood, and for seven nights and six days he fought, until he alone stood upon a mountain of corpses upon the seventh dawn, holding the young princess in his arms.

The Tolend Dathar of today is a Guardian, one of the protectors of the royal line, a personal bodyguard to the Princess of Asylia. He is a silent man, saying nothing. He is ever alert, every ready to protect his charge. Tolend Dathar is ALWAYS with the princess, even while she sleeps, even so when she bathes or otherwise performs ablutions. Such is the purpose of the Guardians, that the royal line is always kept safe.

The equipment of the Guardian's is classified, to the level that only the current king is aware of their standard arms. However Tolends armor is a unique matter. The armor is fashioned entirely from Titansteel, a metal alloy with a density approaching that of the core of a black hole. Asylians generally use the material to make their warships, as the weight of the material precludes it being used for other means.

Tolend however is uniquely gifted. As a boy he was blessed with inhuman levels of strength, though he lacked severely in a number of other capacities, speech and higher learning among them. Military training drilled into him through sheer tenacity the means to fulfill the one mission he would be given, protection of Halena Asylia. His armor's weight makes him impossible to knock down, his sheer ungodly strength allows him to move with ease. He is the absolute perfect shield for the princess, and such is his only purpose, and the only concept he is capable of understanding. Mathmatics and science, tactics, strategy, none of these mean anything to him. To say he is merely a pit bull in human form is not actually accurate though, as a pitbulls are actually quite intelligent.

Tolend does not have strategy or tactics in mind during combat. His solution to most problems is to grab it and break it, something he is well and truly capable of doing.

History
What few people in Asylia know is that the legends that many people think of when they hear his name are actually depictions of his own history, for the Man known as Tolend Dathar is in fact a true immortal. Though Asylians are a very long lived race, they do age and eventually die. Tolend however is unique, in that he can no longer truly be classified as either living or dead.

Eons ago, when Asylia was still a fledgling kingdom, a young man was born, who was strong of body, but suffered a curious defect of birth that rendered him voiceless. For Most asylians this defect is rarely considered problematic, as many of the species are able to use Telepathy, as indeed this young man did. However another facet of this defect is a weakness to infection.

Tolend Dathar was indeed infected, by a unique virus that consumed his flesh, absorbing and taking over the entirety of his body. He died, and was thence controlled by the virus, that sought more victims as all viruses do. An outbreak was prevented by the might of the asylian people, who's magic quickly rendered the creature immobile. Studies were made of it, and over time a sort of cure was developed.

Tolend Dathar cannot be considered living, nor can he be called dead. He is in between, and nothing short of absolute dissolution will eliminate him. Such is impossible however, as the virus has rendered each individual cell sentient and willfull, meaning that when a threat to it's existence is determined, it shall separate and scatter it's constituent parts. More than one enemy of the kingdom has discovered this, to their dismay.

As if that wasn't enough, the virus is incredibly aggressive. Most asylians are rendered immune from infection not by actual medical practice, but by the fact that the asylian physiology isn't strong enough to survive infection. when an Asylian becomes infected, their bodies often simply give out and die, taken the virus with them. In most other living or organic creatures, the virus's aggression overwhelms biological, and even biomechanical, systems within hours. Nanite defenses have proven useless, as the virus assaults the nanites themselves, and somehow breaks them down to use for it's own purposes.

Tolend Dathar became a hidden asset to the Asylians, one which the king, in a bout of selfishness after the loss of his wife and birth of his daughter, decided to use for the sole purpose of protecting his daughter. He had Tolend trained and programmed to fulfill only one purpose, ensuring his daughter would never come to harm.

So begins...

A ship, a frigate in size and class, though otherwise unique in it's design, rips into the area of space where station Z is found. it is accompanied by a sudden shift of light, like that of a warp jump, but curiously there is no sign of the signature usually accompanying such form of travel.

The ship itself is elegant and regal, shaped like an arrowhead, the two sweeping arms curl softly upward, while the vessel thickens only slightly in it's middle, where it's main body lies. The engines, rather than being large and obvious, are slim and nearly indistinguishable from the wings. Everything about this ship bespeaks of class, elegance, and wealth. And after a short pause, it begins making it's way to the space station Z.

Aboard the craft, a young woman looks over a slew of paperwork, while her silent guardian stands beside her desk, watching the door. The woman's dress is, like the ship, elegant and regal. A golden dress, simple and plain, wraps around her body. No jewelry mars her simple elegance, and her hair is cut short, ending just at her shoulders, though it curls softly about her temples.

As she looks over her paperwork, she chuckles, then begins to write out a note, saying aloud to her guardian "It would seep Martha has made yet another blunder in her efforts to shift funds from the House of Scholars to General Corsii's army. Honestly, I can't imagine How that fool of a woman continues to maintain her position."

Her guardian does not respond, but it matters not. The girl finishes writing her note, and sets it aside to be giving to her butler at the first opportunity. "Hopefully this time my father will see reason and have her demoted, or at the very least publically humiliated.

The docking bays were quite busy at this time. For one reason or another, Space Station Z had seen a recent boom in activity. This was absolutely fabulous for business, Bluuna remarked to herself. Absolutely fabulous. A large, bubblegum-pink ship disappeared into one of the docking bays.

Docking with the space station was easy enough, though Halena never did feel at ease during the take offs and landings. It's not that she was afraid, Asylian royalty weren't allowed to be afraid of anything after all, but her stomach wouldn't be still until the landing was complete.

"remind me to have our Pilot's pay increased by fifteen percent when we get back, won't you Tolend" She said to her protector. As always, he deigned not to respond as he led the way out of her personal quarters and down to the cargo access. The princess herself of course kept only a step behind him. She generally did, as she knew he would get annoyed otherwise.

The Man led the way off of the ship, his gleaming armor serving as a beacon and distraction from the demure figure that followed in his wake, just a step to one side and behind him. She glanced around curiously as she followed him, taking in the sights before she tired of them and returned to marking information down on a small, flat faced piece of crystal.

"We should get that resupply sorted as soon as possible, Ilia is supposed to Rendevouz with us on her way back from her mission, And the meetup point will be difficult enough to get to as it is. We've already lost time with General Edmund and his silly insistence on inspecting the ship. As if you don't do that literally every time we step on and off the thing." She rattles off to his back, not exactly ignored, but as per usual, he does not respond, focusing instead on the individuals traversing the area, and keeping careful watch of them.

"There, the captains been informed of the need for urgency. Even so it will still take a few minutes, so I would like to see if we can't pick up a local delicacy. Father always says that you should try as many new things as possible, if only to inoculate yourself." She reaches over and pulls at his hand. "Find us a deli or something won't you."

And again, Tolend remains silent, though his flat gaze now shifts to the signs indicating directions throughout the station, as he searches for a food court.

Space Station Z paged an automated recording of AIS to the Asylian and gelatinous arrivals. The voice was Christopher Sparks, the man who breathed life back into the station after he bought it for a steal.

"Welcome to Space Station Z We hope you enjoy your stay."

"Danshu! Lorka Glorv!" Bluuna wibbled her gelatinous self away from the pilot's controls. She proudly graduated top of her class in Aerospace Maneuvering - one of the hardest sets of courses they had to take. Aquatics was the easiest. She never envied those who were stationed on the home world. What a boring life!

She made her way from the bridge, very excited to finally get to see Space Station Z. Back home it was talked about a lot - one of the best places to species watch and harbor new sound frequencies. She was practically exploding! Her perimeters were consistently wibbly, and her form refused to stay solid. Many others flattened themselves as she passed so as to not accidentally brush jelly and catch the excitement. Sure, it was good to be happy, but woah was Bluuna up to eleven! Compared to most humans, Bluuna only came up to about the belly button, but she didn't care. Those were very interesting too, if not more so than faces because of their pre-birth uses.

The crew began unloading the deliver of frozen forn treats while Bluuna exited the airlock, which was only there for visiting species really, and splat down onto the ground in Space Station Z. Quickly she made her way through, a quiverring blob of aquamarine jelly with no concrete form, no legs, no face, what might be a waistline if you were to think abstractly, and for some reason the best of vibes. If anyone brushed against her their mind would be momentarily invaded by song, and those who were paying attention might notice the song faintly coming from her. Perfect clarity, but very quiet. There were so many interesting people here! And oh wow ships she'd never seen. But she knew better than to linger by the vessels and continued her charge, sticking briefly to people every now and again as she went.

As the other vessel landed and the blob started it's way through, Tolend reached over to hold Halena back as it passed. Halena herself paused long enough in her work to glance at the disturbance, only to do a double take as she realized what exactly was coming through.

"is that... What is that? A sentient ball of ooze?" She whispered to Tolend, who of course didn't respond. "By the gods what sort of horrid world gives birth to such a disgusting creature?"

Halena, being a princess, knew very well that proper decorum was expected of her at all times. Even so as the slimy thing came near she couldn't help but shriek a little, jerking her feet up and away from it.

Truly, the differences between the jelly creatures biology and that of the Asylians made for the greatest of unfortunate misunderstandings, as the Asylians were born with a natural immunity to outside influences on their psyche, whether good or bad. So even though the creature was radiating good intentions and happiness to all around, the Asylians saw only an all too mobile ball of slime, with barely enough semblance of sentience to register to them as anything more than a monster.

Truly the Asylians are an unempathetic lot.

Yashuman II
Primary airlock bay

There was a deep audible clunk as the docking clamps engaged with the Yahuman II's airlock system, the airlocks cycled with an audible hiss, and the doors began to unlock.

Behind the armored airlock door on the Aschen side was a single squad of sixteen Aschen marines. Each one of them were wearing their dark blue, and black BDU uniforms, adorned with black ceramite vests, knee and elbow pads. Their disruptor rifles, while bearing the same design hallmarks of the Type 03 PDWs carried by Aschen personnel, they were a sleek black, allowing them to somewhat blend in with their uniforms.

The airlocks cycled, and the doors opened. The Aschen sergeant was the first to step forward. He looked to his left, and to his right, as sixteen armed men followed in almost lock step.

Their heavy boots clacked on the metal floor as they stepped forward, the sergeant, a young man by the name of Anton Valerian was in charge of this particular marine platoon.

He checked the charge on his Type 03 PDW, and stepped forward. "Alright, let's move." He said, in Anquietas, as he started down into the bay, the rhythmic footfalls echoing behind him.

Bluuna ignored the shriek, despite it shrilling her perimeter membrane. Her kind were used to this kind of reaction. She didn't even bother offering a correction on the ooze (she was goo, thank you very much)- it was no bother. Again, Bluuna was used to it. Her whole species was for the most part! They had realized a long time ago just what it was about them that others found so unsettling, and really who could blame them?

They didn't have most physical features typically associated with sentient beings, such as eyes for example. That tended to weird the other sentients out. Also, they were see through and had no discernible organs. It was a gelatin thing. Their limbs were sporadic and their forms weren't solid. They could grow and extend to an extent, they were tacky to the touch (but not moist), and depending on the surface they had a tendency to either track things around or leave the floor looking better than when they got there.

Most unsettling, however, was that they had a cousin in the gene tree who was notoriously nefarious. Usually liked to hang out in dark and dank places, too. They were carnivorous. She shuddered at the thought of ingesting flesh. Merging proteins. Absorbing another animal's ingestion choices. Fats. Yick!

Bluuna was almost at the door to the corridor, where there was light security. They weren't doing much more than random identification checks. If she got pulled, they'd stick her with a little needle to verify her base composition and call it a day. Most other species didn't bother sorting her kind beyond acknowledging that they existed as they did. Most other species couldn't tell her apart from her uncle! This was always a fun game for them - trading places.

She felt the footsteps before she ever saw them coming - and whoah did they keep a good beat! Bluuna paused by an official who gave her a half smile before looking up at the approaching squad.

Peter sighed. What total crap. He had only been on shift twenty minutes and it looks like the last schmucks let in someone that was wanted by someone. Not just anyone, either. He swore under his breath and gave Bluuna a stern look. She blobbed her way happily along through clearance and started off towards the convention center.

Halena made a face typical of a grossed out teen before shaking her head and patting at her cheek. "Oh dear, I hope theres no more of those things." She said to her Guardian who, you guessed it, opted not to respond.

Although in a way he did respond. He reached over and simultaneously stepped in front of Halena, placing himself between her and the Aschen troops on their way. At the same time his hand went to the hilt of a sword on his waist. The look on his face, which was admittedly a normally stern expression, could now be considered almost angry.

"Tolend? What is it? There shouldn't be any threats here, this is a public station after all... well I suppose that means there could be lots of threats actually" The girl whispered, ducking under one of his arms to look around. At the sight of the Aschen she blinked "Oh... That's why is it? Well Tolend please, relax, I'm sure they're not so foolish as to try anything here in a public place. Besides, they likely don't even know who we are, unless their high ranking officials, but even then I doubt they have any orders regarding us. Just let them be and we can get on with things."

"besides, it's our turn." She said, stepping up to Peter and waiting for his instructions on how to proceed. Generally she never had to go through such checkpoints, her status as royalty usually granted her free passage. A part of her was actively curious how things would go.

Peter glanced at the Aschen and rolled his eyes, forcing what he hoped was a kind smile onto his face at the Royalty before him. He respectfully bobbed his bead.

"We've never had a casualty at their hand- just a lot of complaints, as you, er," Peter flushed and bowed again. He hoped his words settled them, though he doubt it.

"Enjoy your stay," He stepped aside with a third awkward bow to let them through.

The group of soldiers paid little attention to the group. But that all changed the moment Tolend moved to the sword on his waist.

The Sergeant put his hand on his disruptor pistol, which was securely holstered on his hip, and the whole formation of Aschen soldiers stopped, while two almost raised their weapons.

"Hand off your weapon, now!" Sergeant Valerian ordered, pointing aggressively at Tolend.

Generally all it took was a stern order for those who would otherwise think about getting any ideas to back down, but the sergeant came ready for a fight, after receiving word that the people who attacked the fleet was present, at this station. He had orders to perform an inspection, which occurred regularly given the stations position within Aschen stellar claims, despite being a neutral station.

It took hefty shipping tolls to keep the local Aschen governor largely out of the space station's business, and he often looked the other way.

Peter would likely notice these weren't the Proivincial defense force that normally came to rough things up, and collect tolls, rather these were Imperial uniforms, which meant something had attracted the attention of the wider Aschen high command.

The Sergeant moved forward first, holding up what looked like a warrant of some kind.

"We have a lawful order from the Ministry of Law to perform a search of this facility for enemy insurgents. Step aside." Valerian moved to the side, and gestured for his men to move through the checkpoint, bystanders stepping aside, and giving the men a wide berth.

Halena rolled her eyes and grabbed Tolends arm. "Stop it, your being rude." She said, forcefully pulling the mans arm from his weapon. For his own part, Tolends eyes never ceased their glare at the Sergeant. There was something artistic about his poise, like a tiger in the moments before it struck.

To Peter Halena smiled and thanked the man, moving across the check point and, rather forcefully for a child, pulling Tolend, who despite having to move backwards to follow her, never once took his eyes from the Aschen soldiers.

"I think we should see if there is an open market first, and then search for individual shops. Some new dresses, perhaps an actual suit for you to wear to formal occasions would be nice. No offence Tolend but your armor is garish at best." She prattled off, oblivious to the Aschen and her guardians staring match with them "At the very least some ornaments to make it less of an eyesore at the gala."

Tolends movements remained smooth as he followed his charge further into the station, but he kept his eyes on the Soldiers until they were out of sight. His hand likewise returned to and remained on his weapon until the two had rounded the corner.

Princess Halena Asylia looked around as they entered the corridor and sighed, particularly pleased with the smells coming from the bar known as "sparky's"

"We'll definitely be dining their tonight. But for now, let's check the stores." She said, marching forward with Tolend a step behind her. The guardian was walking smoothly, but his hand remained on his weapon. And his ears were listening for any sign of approach by the Aschen soldiers they had encountered earlier.

A slap by the princess barely even registered to the man as she sought to get his attention "Did you hear me, I asked you where you want to go first. Oh stars, never mind. We'll check their fabric realtors first, then look to dressmakers. After that, accessories and perhaps something to make this armor of yours less problematic at the next Gala. Oh and we definitely should get Ilia a gift, She's been working so hard lately, the poor woman."

Peter Rovontea moved his hand to his own immobilizer but didn't draw. He watched with one brow cocked as the two groups spat at each other like cats. Typical shit day, he thought to himself.

"Alright, triggerhappy, is the threat a threat?" He asked Valerian, tapping a button on his vest. Of course Valerian knew the rules, so he didn't bother repeating them.

Nobody but the target.

Alpha opened up a secondary channel so that he could communicate with the Space station's A.I freely if needed, leaving the docking platform and entering into the outgoing and incoming centre of the station, well this set of docks.

Halena and Xylose made their way through the outer plaza, going across the different shops and locations. The princess perused dresses, jewelry, books, and cookware just as equally as she did military grade combat armor, weapons, and computational software. She had a particular interest in the engineering department, investigating a number of mechanical and electronic devices and tools.

Tolend, for his part, did as he usually does. He stayed by her side and said nothing, looking over the items only to ensure they were of no danger to his charge, and once he had verified they were not, their entire existence became as air to him. He cared not about the weapons or armor, no more than any other item at any rate. The other customers and the clerks in charge of the stores were of slightly more interest to him, as he watched and eyed them to ensure they never came too close to Halena.

Anton stepped into the outer plaza from the corridor, and quickly slung his disruptor rifle into a lowered ready position, flipping the power indicator switch to armed, the man cast his steely gaze on the shops, and the people coming, and going. He maintained a steady uplink to EVE.

He took a step forward, and called out.

“Ladies and gentlemen, this is an inspection! Present identification paperwork for purview, let’s keep it orderly so we can get on with our inspection, and move about our business. Line up, single file, papers ready!”

Tolend heard the commotion first, and promptly marched over and grabbed Halena by her waist, bodily carrying her to a separate part of the store.

Halena for her part, needed to ask no questions to understand what was going on and what was on Tolends mind. She did however roll her eyes as she said "No no no, this is the wrong way to go about this Tolend. These people don't know who we are, and as long as that's the case, they won't have the authority to apprehend us. What's more, your just acting suspiciously by being so obstinate."

"The proper way to handle this is with diplomacy. But honestly, it'll take them time to locate us regardless, so we might as well finish shopping. Now, lets take a look at those 'watches' I saw earlier. Such a curious creation, they actually measure their perception of time." She said to him, proceeding to lead him to a stand of watches, even as other customers acted in shock and surprise.

Of course some of the customers would likewise ignore the summons, being so used to the way things were normally, and then still others would be confused as to what they were supposed to do, since something like this hadn't come up to them before. An inspection on station Z? Nobody ever got searched on station Z, and this was a shopping mall for pity's sake. "An Operation to seize the station, and the docked ships is underway. Confirmed enemy contact. Maintain order, and do what you can to avoid spooking a potential enemy VIP." EVE's voice said, chiming into Sergeant Valerian's earpiece. "Stall for time." She added.

"Right." Valerian muttered, switching the safety on his disruptor rifle, the weapon began to make a shrill whine.

"Alright everyone! I won't ask again! I need you to form up in an orderly fashion, and present your papers for inspection!"

He hoped the shrill whine of his weapon would put the confused people on notice.

"Any deviation from these orders will be deemed an act of aggression!"

The sound of a disruptor rifle charging, and the very no nonsense tones Valerian was taking was enough to get the sheep moving. They proceeded into an orderly line and readied their documents, those that had them.

Those that didn't, along with those that were still foolish enough to think the station beyond such reproach, began shouting obscenities and protesting against the Aschen presence.

And then still others continued to ignore them, and this somewhat smaller number of individuals included the princess and her guardian, who kept a hand on his charges shoulder despite her attempts to shrug it off.

"Honestly, what are you going to do Tolend? Even you couldn't carry me safely through all of that disruptor fire. We'll just do what we can to finish our shopping and, when they get around to us, we'll go with them peacefully." She said to the irate protector, who remained silent as ever. "Yes, I know father would be upset, but this situation is already well enough out of hand that we can't honestly be expected to return without blood shed."

Tolend gave her this blank look and she placed a hand to her heart. "Absolutely not, It would be appalling and an embarrassment, besides if you kill everyone on the station, they likely won't welcome us back, and I do very much like these shoes." She said as she inspected pair of intricately designed heels.
