Topteris

Brittle above the water, pliable below; a drifter that can take root.

0 · 147 views · located in The Infinite Void

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by AugmentationAudit

Description

Taking on the appearance of a woman with greenish skin when she takes on human form at all, her colour varies depending on how dry she is and how much water remains in the pool that she calls home. Her hair is soft, falling like the fronds of a water plant, but is also rather slimy. She's perpetually damp when healthy.

Personality

Near-obsessive about water, her one concern is the pool that sustains her and how it appears to be slowly drying. She sees it as her mission to gather water to maintain her home and will go to almost any means to do so, even if that means being somewhat unscrupulous, though when the water level in her pool is high she's both mischievous and sociable in nature. She loves to talk, and loves harmless humour all the more.

Equipment

She carries nothing, but her abilities are water related. She can swim well, able to breathe both water and air, though when she's dry her ability to breathe air decreases. She cannot summon water unless the water is already present; she can call pre-existing water to her but cannot create it or summon it from a great distance. She can occupy any body of water, no matter how small it seems, and can abandon her corporeal form to do so. If she has enough water stored within her form she can become a mist in the air.
Her personal favourite trick involves becoming a mist of water vapour and letting someone breathe her in to play havoc with their bodies.

History

Born in a shallow pool, her duty and her lifeforce is that water and the creatures that live inside. Over time, the water has decreased, the fish gone, only small creatures remain; she dreams of restoring the water to a level where there can be fish again.

So begins...

Topteris's Story

Through the window and into the room, a near-invisible cloud of improbably cool steam washed into the bar. Sentient, even in the purest form; water, the vapour circulated easily, harmless, but waiting for a patron to take an inwards breath as the steam was passing.

Hot breath, full of moisture, was as welcome as cool water on a warm face; there was nothing better than one so willing to inhale. It only took a second for the mist to infiltrate his lungs, through alveoli, diffused into capillaries and into the blood that was circulated by a rapidly pumping heart. She was humour, feeling him inside, and wondered what he would do with her inside; what she would see and feel now.

It didn't take long for her to become bored within his body; so many beats of a human heart and she covered every inch of him inside. Dull, now, there should be more; she gathered herself and drew her influence: he was thirsty, surely, he wanted to drink water, pure water, as much as he could stand and more.

Appeased by his attempts to appease himself, she allowed him to be at least partially sated, though there would have to be more, much more, and soon if he was to avoid the burning return of an overwhelming thirst. It wouldn't be long now before she tired of him, but a little time within to gather water was enough.

Bored now, but sated at least to an extent; he hadn't amused her greatly, which was a shame, she leaked from his skin in sweat, reformed as cool steam and washed away.

Topteris sat at the side of the room a grim, simmering look on their face that suggested that something wasn't going quite to plan. It could be that the room was empty, it could be that it was wet and cold, it could be- any number of things. All the same, they waited for something to happen.

Topteris made her (its?) way over to Ace as a point of interest. She was smiling, but the expression seemed warped on her strange face. "Hello," she said softly.

Topteris seemed reassured by the smile, and as such expanded her own. Her eyes were large and somewhat murky in the low lighting of the almost empty bar as she looked the other up and down. "I am as well as I can be. How are you?"

Topteris was a little confused by this strange human (she classed every other as a human, whether that be true or not) but she continued to smile. They didn't like it if she was 'rude', she had learned that a long time ago now. "I am glad, though- you do not need to lower your head like that..."

Topteris watched the human for a moment as she tried to work out the expression on his face. He was- afraid? She wasn't all that good at reading humans. "My name is Topteris." She was trying to put him at ease. "Please, I mean you no harm."

Topteris couldn't read thoughts, so his internal speech went unnoticed. "It is... nice to meet you, Ace?" She wasn't quite sure on human small-talk, but she was trying. "I have been here for a while, though I do not come in here often. There are very strange people here."

Topteris was a little alarmed when the human decided to lean in close, but when she realised he only wanted to whisper she relaxed again. "Strange," she whispered in return, just loud enough for him to hear her. "They fight very often... there is a monster over there." She made the smallest of gestures towards Corimeth and hoped that the monster in question didn't notice her.

Topteris nodded her head and followed the man. Thirsty? He had no idea of the meaning of the word, but she could hardly blame him; he was human after all. "Yes, I would like some water."

Topteris padded quietly forwards when it became apparent that the man had sat himself down. She did the same, though she looked awkward on a barstool, her flattened feet hanging oddly in the air. "...I would like a glass of water..." she told the robotic bartender, unsure about what it even was. Not alive, certainly.

She was rather shocked when the glass of water was placed before her without so much as a sound. "Thank you..." She looked back at Ace. "This place is so strange."

Topteris watched the man in silence for a long moment, wondering just what he was and what he was doing. Her water tasted of chemicals, made her feel sick, but she was so thirsty... she had no choice but to drink. "Are you okay?" she asked Ace.

Topteris tilted her head, drinking a little more of the horribly tainted water. "Please, tell me what the matter is?" She had to wonder if she wasn't the only one that suffered when faced with this place.

Topteris turned to watch the man yet again (she seemed to be doing that a lot, but given that he never seemed to sit still...) as he walked over and- music! She smiled. "Oh! I had no idea that thing played music!" she chirped in delight.

Topteris came to the door but didn't exit; the smoke upset her delicate skin and sinuses, but she didn't want to leave her new friend, so she stayed by the door and simply looked out at him.

"I don't like the smoke, so I'll wait here," she told him. "Where are you from?"

Topteris blinked slowly, some strange emotion playing in her hazy eyes. "You have forgotten? I wonder sometimes if that doesn't happen when people come here. So many humans forget, I think, perhaps, their minds struggle with the transition. Do not be afraid; you will remember in time."

Topteris wasn't quite sure that she understood, but she didn't mention that. There was no need to scare the poor human. "How do you mean?" she asked. She wanted to help this human, but she wasn't sure how.

A prickle of a feeling on her neck... she turned a fraction, glancing at Zul'kaz. He was looking at her... how strange.

Topteris trailed after him yet again, not quite sure why she kept following, but unable to stop herself. She wanted him to be okay. "It will be okay..." she said somewhat hesitantly. She didn't know that, or course, but sometimes it was better to weave a little untruth than tell him that she had no idea how to make it better.

Topteris raised a hand, looking rather puzzled, and mimicked the waving motion. She wasn't sure quite what that meant, but she had seen others respond that way, so guessed it to be correct. "I'm glad," she said to Ace. "I have to leave soon; it's too dry in here for me, but maybe you can talk to someone here? They may be able to help you find your memories."
