Trephan

In Prehistoric times, it was thought that mental illness was caused by magical beings playing tricks with the mind...

a character in “The Multiverse”, as played by AugmentationAudit

Description

A changeling, fae kind, and typically taking the form of a young to middle aged man with brown hair, brown eyes and a clean shaven face: his body of the century.
Physically, he can change his form to a limited extent, but to remain in one shape for an extended period of time requires stealing that form from its rightful owner rather than simply emulating it using his ability to shape-shift. If he is capable of changing into anything other than the form of a living thing, then that ability has never manifested or been tried.

He takes a body from birth, replacing a very young infant with himself and leaving the original child (trapped in an 'ugly' constructed form) elsewhere; exactly what he does with these children is unknown, as Trephan never discloses such information.

Personality

Mischievous to a fault, Trephan possesses what might be called a malicious sense of humour, and is often faintly sexual in his thought process which is referenced in his speech in the form of innuendo more often than not. To a woman, specifically a woman that he has some form of interest in, he appears to be a gentleman, and is generally rather polite when he wants something.
As a general rule, men and older people of both genders bear the brunt of his bad behaviour, which tends to be more mocking than actively aggressive. He has not been known to raise a hand to a mortal with the intent to wound or kill, though occasionally he will preform some trick that results in discomfort. He tends not to be interested in causing physical pain unless he is attempting to impress someone who values that characteristic.
Mental anguish and its manufacture in mortals is his speciality, though that particular skill is something that has fallen into disrepair in him over the years; he hasn't exercised his powers in mental manipulation and inducing insanity for centuries, and as such he is very much out of practice.
He is a very vain man, and loathes the idea of being what he classes an unattractive; the bodies he chooses always fit a certain profile in terms of looks, and he judges a child carefully before replacing it.
He is devoted when it comes to his idea of family, and is more than willing to go to great lengths for the sake of successful reproduction with his chosen spouse; to the extend of sacrificing a great deal of his own power and, temporarily, his chosen form.

Equipment

He carries nothing save for a simple wooden flute, being able to magic up anything that he might need. He uses nothing in the way of weaponry, being a generally non-combative creature. Most of the items he creates are not what they appear to be; their face value often more impressive than their actual capabilities.

History

It is said that if you do not keep constant watch over your child, that if you forget the charms and wards to keep the fairyfolk away, then you might wake in the morning to find a changeling has come and replaced the babe you left to sleep.

Over several hundred years he has taken on many forms, one of which he declared as ugly and he has sworn to never inhabit an unattractive body again.

With the assistance of Absinthe, he stole the unborn baby from an unwitting woman and replaced it with a magically created stock, all for the final purpose of creating a child. However, lacking proper assistance from his partner, Trephan was unable to accurately steal the body of a young woman, Kate, to house his unborn child, and as a result the child was poorly formed and its father too weak to correct this.

Trephan was forced to take on a new body at once, chosen for the sake of connivance, and has yet to discover what became of his failed attempt at parenthood.

So begins...

Trephan's Story

Trephan arrived in the room rather innocuously, though if someone was paying attention they may have noticed that his passage through the room was difficult to trace. The table that should have been in his path was not, the patron whose elbow swung his way in drunken conversation never touched him; odd, certainly, but perhaps a trick of the dim lights and strong drinks.

He took at seat at the bar counter, the chair clean, and placed his elbows on a portion of the top that was not sticky despite the fact that such things were illogical; all of the counter should have been sticky and yet the elbows of his open-collared shirt remained free of residue.

"Ah, once again you demonstrate a pathological need for human attention, Absinthe," he said without looking at the fairy who arrived literally at the same moment as Trephan opened his mouth.

Trephan liked her new position and smiled, a finger raised to split his smirking lips in two. The view was lovely, even if he did say so himself and the challenge of keeping his other hand resting on his own knee was one that he revelled in; ah, they had been so young the last time that they had played this game, and he had been wearing a different face, though, of course, she would always know him.

"You must never forget their complexity and capacity for madness, my dear; it is what defines them, after all."

Apparently of their own volition, his eyes found her left knee; he refused to let them advance from that point unless travelling to her face and her face alone.

Trephan slipped the finger that rested against his lips into his mouth, a long, dark tongue wrapping around it for a moment as if he were attempting to clean away some stickiness that had transferred onto the digit. He then removed his hand and placed it with the other on his knee.

"About twenty-three years, though I can't say I honestly count; human measurements of time are far too small for me to take conscious note of and I have better things to be doing with my time. This is my third form since we first met, and I am rather fond of this face; far more attractive than my last, that I had to change at once after seeing it in the mirror." He shook his head vainly. "I couldn't be doing with that."

With a teasing smirk, he hooked his finger into a section of the fabric at the front of her dress. "This is nice," he drawled.

Trephan allowed her to remove his finger seeing as she had offered him something else to entertain himself. "Twenty-three years: such a short time, but I do very much like this face so I will probably remain for quite some time with it. I may even go so far as to reproduce in this form, or at least influence a human male to reproduce a child of this calibre for me to inhabit."

He cast a dark eye around the room, shook his head when he saw nothing of interest. "I suppose there must be bloodshed here, or you would never have come, though I must say there is nothing here that I would inhabit an ugly man for."

Trephan grinned, taking full advantage of her position while he had the chance (though he was quite sure that it would become a common occurrence again). "Oh, I'm sure I could manufacture a little fun for you, my dear, and a little fun for myself at the same time, if you understand what I mean?"

There was a teasing light in his eyes as he continued. "I'm sure I can stay for as long as I am entertained, and I'm quite sure you can entertain me. Maybe you should introduce me to this human?"

Trephan looked her up and down, winked, and folded his arms. "Oh, I most certainly would like a drink on you, Absinthe, and I'm sure my most stubborn self can come at your command, but just this once and only because I want to meet this human. Tell me all about him while I wait, my dear? I'm terribly interested in a creature that could catch your interest in such a way."

Trephan took the glass with a smile, though chose to talk rather than drink at first, something seeming to shimmer in the air at his back when viewed from the right angle. "I really do have to meet this man; he sounds positively deluded!" He took a sip from the glass and turned his attention towards Viarra with a charming smile. "Abby will be with you in just a moment, my dear."

Trephan chuckled softly and drained his drink, tongue once again cleaning the residue from his lips. "I'm sticking around, my dear, don't you worry about that, though I can't deny my nature as a worldly creature," he said, setting the empty glass down on the counter where it promptly vanished into the ether.

He looked at Viarra again and offered her a charming smile. "How far along are you?"

Trephan watched her closely, the air behind him still tainted by that strange shimmer that was not quite there. He smiled rather fondly when she rubbed the flesh that covered the baby hidden inside. "So a little while to go, then, but just starting to get exciting." He offered her a long hand. "My name is Trephan, a pleasure to meet you my darling."

Trephan took advantage of her reaching hand and shook it with his own; a brief gesture before his hands returned to the bar counter. "Oh yes indeed! A baby is the most wonderful blessing for a family. Was he or she planned, or just a lucky accident?" Half an eye remained on Absinthe, who was pretending to ignore him; he knew she was keeping an eye on him too.

"I might, though I'm still young; now might not be the time for such things as children." He settled his chin on his hands, attention once again fixed on the other fairy in the room rather than on the woman that he was talking to, though it still appeared to be paying her the utmost attention.

"What is the father like, if I might ask?"

"I'm sure we can think of a way to entertain you, my dear," he said smoothly to Absinthe, one long finger touching the tip of her nose as he answered Viarra. "Because, for someone like me, a baby would need a great deal of preparation; I'm not nearly as lucky as a woman, who can have a baby whenever she so desires for the fertile period of her life."

Trephan did that.

Trephan had actually lost interest in Viarra in favour of grinning at Absinthe; she was, after all, more interesting, and the woman wasn't far enough along for his liking; it would take far too long for him to ever get what he desired. He moved his hand to somewhere other than Absinthe's nose and winked. "How about I try really very hard?" A little magic danced between his fingers. "Also, I have a gift for you; the reason I came searching."

Trephan wriggled his fingers in a faintly suggestive manner, threads of magic splaying between the digits like glowing purple snakes. "Oh, my dear, you're not coming second," he whispered, and was suddenly leaning in with his head on her shoulder and his lips at his ear. "I was choosing a gift for you, my love; the most wonderful gift that will make you feel fantastic. This, my dear, will be our greatest creation and the height of pleasure for the both of us."

Trephan sent a thread of magic racing up her arm as she took his hand, a smile on his lips and a wicked light in his eyes. "I promise not to tickle, and I promise that you'll like this, my dear; it involves a great deal of suffering on the part of the human of my choosing, and you get to be the hand that brings about that pain."

He made a move towards the stairs and indicated that she should accompany him. "It will be exquisite, my dear."

Trephan did not protest in the slightest, though Absinthe would be able to feel his wings as she inserted herself into his personal space; they were never fully corporeal, but they sent a charged feeling through anything that passed into their space.

Trephan made his way down the stairs with Absinthe, hands raised to obscure the green fairy's eyes as he lead her carefully into the room. "I have a surprise for you," he said quietly into her ear, so she alone would hear him, the faintest touch of magic wrapping through his words. "A very special surprise, actually, but it's something that you shouldn't take on face value. You'll like it once you know what I have planned, my dear, I promise."

A chuckle, warm air and warmer magic, blew between them. "Insanity and destruction, my love."

Trephan chuckled and the smile on his face and the tone of his voice seemed warm to those that overheard; the quality of the magic he wove between the syllables made the actual words themselves near-impossible to determine so that they would be interpreted as the teasing fondness between lovers.

"Oh, it will be worth it, my darling. You, the most esteemed Absinthe, will be presented with a gift that will allow you to excel; the opportunity to torment and capture, my love, so that we can make magic together."

Trephan, as if sensing her thoughts, pressed a kiss to the shell of her ear and removed his hands with a flourish. "There!" he said, devilishly pleased with himself at choosing such a challenging specimen, though he doubted that Absinthe would realise what he was giving her at first. "A gift for the most malicious, devious and skilled fairy that I have met in all of my years."

Trephan had anticipated such a reaction, but wasn't so easily deterred. "No no no, my darling, think of it; I have selected the perfect creature for you to capture and subdue, a creature that, together, we can divest of its growing spawn. Make a Stock with me, Absinthe, so that we can replace the child and make it our own, so that we can weave magic together and create the most delicious of offspring."

He remained close, wings beating into reality at his back, magic thrumming in every cell of his stolen body. "Think of her torment, my darling, at what we will do. Think of the magic we will make. Think of the child of you and I."

Trephan chuckled, still far from put off; ah, he lived for the challenge of such things. "This shell has many years in it yet, and when I choose to move from it I shall do so at a time when our offspring is grown to a sufficient extent. And I will care for the child, my love, so that you are free to create havoc for them to learn from. When we are tired of raising children? Then that is what humanity is for. We give the child to a host family, sit back, and watch as they grow strong and clever without having to lift so much as a finger."

His own wings were hard to see; a strange, worrying delusion of the air at his back. "We are both fully grown now, my love, and I think it is time to curse the world with our spawn."

There was a light in his eyes that was positively unholy, though it most likely looked like a loving glint to anyone but Absinthe. He was almost certain by this point in time that Absinthe had never encountered a fairy child, and was equally certain that, when she had a being of her own creation to manipulate and make others jealous with, she would be wonderfully content.

"I will do everything that you have no desire to do, my love; you simply have to partake in the pleasurable tasks and then leave those boring bits to someone else."

His handsome (stolen) face split into a truly evil smile for a second before dimming into what looked like a delighted, fatherly grin. "Wonderful! And of course, I have been planning this thing for years. Madness breeds madness, as you know, my dear, and it wouldn't be true to myself if I wasn't always thinking of the future, though I had to wait to find the prefect partner before I began, for one such as myself will not be satisfied by half-measures."

He observed the woman that he had so carefully chosen to be manipulated by them for the sake of their reproduction, pleased that he had found one so perfect. "Think of her suffering and our delight."

Trephan chuckled, maliciously dark for a second before pulling away with a cheery smile. "Of course, my dear, I will leave you to your drinking while I do what I do best." His dark eyes twinkled with a mischievous intent as he backed away. "I will go entrance the female, so that you can step in and steal her from me when you so desire."

He fully intended to make her jealous, make her angry, so that she was appropriately wicked when the time came to take the human and claim the child for their own.
