For the fist time, ambulance sirens could be heard throughout Wing City, suggesting that some form of emergency medical system was now in place.

Somewhere in the distance, the siren of an ambulance was drawing steadily closer; a new sound that had been absent in Wing City for a very long time. Jarring, because it was new, the sound cut through the bar as the emergency service vehicle raced past at top speed, heading off to some catastrophe or deep within the city.

William the paramedic made his way into the room, in uniform and on the job, but lacking in a specific task for the moment; the health service was still so new that the ambulances were scarcely used yet. Not a bad thing though; there was something deeply rewarding in the idea of building his job up from the bottom.

Wing City Medical were happy to announce the debut of Wing City Hospital, and began to put up posters in the bar. Each flyer read: Wing City Hospital: West-West-West from Gambit's Bar.

Wing City Medical made their presence known in the bar once again, neat and tidy in their brand new uniforms, unconcerned by the rather violent nature of the place. Quietly, they began affixing posters to the walls that read: Wing City Hospital: west-west-west from Gambit's Bar.

"I'm sorry, I'm afraid you're not speaking clearly. Do you require this call in another language?" The operator's message was repeated in several common languages. "Can you please clarify and repeat."

"Can you give me more details, Ma'am? I have an ambulance standing by. Can you tell me the child's condition? Any information will be helpful. Please keep calm and try to explain what's happened."

"We are dispatching an ambulance to your location now, Ma'am. I need you to stay on the telephone for me. Can you tell me what happened to the child? Is he breathing? Are you somewhere safe?"

"Please ma'am, try to keep calm. I need you to find out if the child is breathing. I need you to put your face close to his mouth, and count to ten, watching his chest. Can you do that? I need you to watch and feel for breathing."

"Ma'am? Hello? Ma'am?!" The tinny voice of the operator continued to issue from the speaker.

In the distance, there was the very obvious sounds of an ambulance approaching at high speed. The operator meanwhile, sounded flustered. "I'm sorry Ma'am, but I'm afraid I need to know what's going on. Is there an injured child at Gambit's bar?"

"Ma'am, calling for an ambulance when one isn't required is a felony, not to mention that you're taking resources from somewhere they might really be needed."

By the time the paramedics arrived, the bar was empty of Eecee and his mother. Mecca was the first responder and strode through the doors as if there really was an emergency, his eyes scanning keenly for any sign of a patient. When it became clear that there wasn't one on the ground floor, he and his partner spoke to the bartender for several minutes, went upstairs for several more, and finally left the establishment, frowning.

All the while, the operator continued to call, "Ma'am? Ma'am?!" over the abandoned telephone.

Given that they were based in Wing City General, and thus very close to Main Street where an apparent bomb had gone off, the staff of Wing City Medical were quick to arrive on the scene. The hospital, well stocked and well prepared, immediately initiated Major Incident Status; staff from all corners of the city began flooding in to help, while non urgent patients were evacuated to make room.

Paramedics and EMT's flooded the scene.

"Sir!" One of the paramedics addressed Captain in an irate tone of voice, while he was attempting to assist a young woman who was unconscious on the sidewalk. "If you don't mind, can you get your military boys not to run over cars that potentially have my patients in them? I understand that being here is important, but for god's sake, there's not need for you to endanger more lives!"

"That would be exceptionally useful, thank you." The paramedic had been joined by one of his colleagues, who was assisting him in maintaining his patient's airway. Others, who had filed from the hospital, were completing similar tasks all across the blast zone. Several nurses were moving from one place to the next, categorizing patients and sending doctors and paramedics hither and tither, making sure the most badly injured patients were seen first.

Meanwhile, the less trained but no less skilled staff were working to calm the masses and get everyone who could walk to back away from the danger.

Wing City Medical were trained for combat; they worked in Wing City, after all. Horatio Castle's staff were well equipped for this sort of situation, dressed in high-tech body armor and helmets. Their employer spared none of his considerable expense when it came to protecting the hard working medics that mopped up after events such as these.

While the battle was apparently just getting started, the medics knuckled down to work on their patients. The auxiliary staff meanwhile took up portable shield generators and arranged themselves around doctors, nurses and their patients, ensuring that as few as possible of the staff came to harm while evacuating patients.

While chaos erupted and soldiers in their war machines began to arrive, the paramedics, medical techs, doctors and nurses continued to work, supported by their healthcare assistants and auxiliary staff. Slowly but surely, the patients were stabilized. When a patient was ready, the team looking after them would prepare them to move, and then transfer them out of the immediate danger zone where they could be taken to the hospital.

The medics remained aware of the scene evolving around them by way of spoken commands and wireless headsets. By now, their overwatch was firmly in place and guiding them through the operations. What had been obviously controlled chaos before rapidly morphed into something completely organised as they started to receive instructions from their superiors.

Despite the sheer number of soldiers that were cropping up in big vehicles, they remained undisturbed, only moving once there was a patient ready to be transported.

"Ma'am?" Mecca, who was among the few paramedics remaining after the bulk of the injured parties had been removed, called out quietly to Erin from the sidelines. The visor of his helmet was pushed back, and he watched her carefully. "Ma'am, do you need help? My name is Mecca, I'm one of the paramedics from Wing City Hospital. If you need any help, we can give it. The healthcare is free, and Mr Castle won't let his patients be taken from the hospital by the authorities until they're well."

"It's nice to meet you, Erin. Like I said, I'm Mecca, and I work for Mr Horatio Castle. He owns the hospital just down the street. Before him, there was nothing; you'd get people bleeding out in the bar, going to rubbish doctors and getting hurt worse. There was no organisation, no ombudsman, and no protection for the client. Mr Castle changed that; this whole region now has free, accessible healthcare. It doesn't matter where you're from, who you are, or what species you belong to, we'll have a doctor that can help. That was Mr Castle's dream."

Mecca extended his hand, fearless and smiling, despite everything Erin had apparently just done to Main Street. The man was a doctor; he didn't judge, and he understood the manner in which people lashed out when they were hurt or afraid. "If you need help, anything at all, that's what the hospital is there for. Mr Castle doesn't allow the police, the military or any of the fractions to barge into his hospital either. We can treat people properly, without worrying that someone will be plucked out from under our hands."

Mecca smiled. "You're in Wing City, planet Terra, Ma'am. We're something of a hub for transdemensional transport, actually. Gambit's, which was the bar that man stuck his head out of a minute ago, has customers from all known realities. It's- confusing, at times, but it means we have a really wide and varied populous. We have doctors from in excess of twelve different universes at the moment; it's really exciting. I'm from a planet called Earth, but so are about half of my co-workers, but only about ten percent of us are from the same Earth..."

Shrugging, Mecca offered the young woman his hand again. "It's scary as hell sometimes, and almost always confusing, but it means we have the best medicine out. We draw from all known universes, get doctors from everywhere we can, and aim to help as many people as possible in the best way possible. We can take care of you, but it'll be on your terms. We're not going to force you into anything you don't want. We're all about consent. And if someone's chasing you, then the walls of the hospital should be enough to keep them busy for a while. Mr Castle doesn't take kindly to people messing with his patients."

"It's been like that for far too long around here," Mecca said. His hand was warm, his grip steady; head lead Erin slowly down the now cleared street towards the hospital. "When Mr Castle first arrived, and this was before my time, apparently everything was done with guns. It's ridiculous, and so many people have died because of it. There's no overruling organisation policing this place; nobody to arrest these people for the crimes they perpetrate. It was awful.

"Mr Castle set up the hospital from a charity. Apparently there was a girl called Anja who used to drink in the bar up the road. She was killed, and during the inquest they found out that she'd been shot. Not just once but a number of times, and someone had preformed backstreet surgery on her. It was terrible. When they looked into it, she'd be shot in the bar, but rather than someone calling for help, she'd just been taken away on the back of a motorbike. That's what it was like, before- no wonder people died."

Mecca shook his head, genuinely saddened. "My world isn't great, but we're organised. We're all policed for our actions, by the civilian police force and the army if it's really bad. We can't just- do the sort of things that the people here get away with on a daily basis. Mr Castle hasn't found out how to stop the fractions and the lack of authority yet, but he's managed to work on the healthcare. Anyone, from anywhere, can get help at our hospital.

"It's something we're all very proud of."

Wing City Medical was a highly trained, highly specialized organisation based in what had to be one of the most diverse, if not to say dangerous areas of the multiverse. There was nowhere like Wing City when it came to magically unstable beings, technologically out there terrorists, and immoral lunatics waiting to rip the walls of reality down. The hospital's manifesto, that they would treat anyone, was very much the case; the place was designed to cater to everything from Hobbits to Gods.

Therefore, the security (and structural integrity) of the buildings were well prepared, to say the least. The veritable magic-SWAT-team that was the hospital security also didn't take kindly to would-be arsonists, and were all too happy to step in with the figurative giant extinguisher and baseball bat.

They were well-trained, and quite happily ejected the threat to the staff, patients and visitors using the talents (magical and otherwise) that they had been hired for.

And as an added bonus, they called the Wing City Police Department and had the would-be terrorists dealt with that way. The Demilitarized Zone the hospital existed was, as it turned out, deadly serious.
