Personality

Xyphos is a bit blunt when it comes to others. He's lived his entire life as someone ready to battle when needed, and it shows in the fact that he does what he feels needs to be done, and that's about it. He's no good for anything terribly fancy, and actually prefers to be around people who know how to use a weapon rather than someone who needs help. He's the kind of guy who thinks that the weak get left behind unless they suck it up and deal with it, but there is a soft side to him. Although the soft side almost never shows, there are times when he does get emotional, especially when talking about his village.

Equipment

Image
Xyphos, being a Blademaster, is able to wield most any edged weapon proficiently, though he prefers one-handed swords over anything else. On average, he carries a sword on each hip, as well as a two-handed sword upon his back. He wears a shirt of super-fine chainmail, with baggy cloth beneath it. His pants are tucked into a pair of armored boots, and his gloves cover the ends of his sleeves, Upon his back in a cloak of fur, though from what animal could be anyone's guess.

He has acquired a new blade, one that has caused his inner being to awaken and take over. It is a blade of ruby mixed with citrine, with small splashes of obsidian within. The blade is heavily enchanted with the element of fire and is also ensorceled so that it will not break under any but the most devastating circumstances. He retains his previous sword, a simple, two-handed steel blade, but the chances of it being used much are slimming rapidly.

History

Talk to him, and you might find out. It might be unlikely that he'll open up, but give it a try, why don't you.

So begins...

Xyphos walked down the street, admiring the order that the building of Wing City showed off. He turned down a side street that he had been told to take in order to go to a place where anyone new to the city could go to stay until they were up on their feet. Within minutes, he had arrived at the infamous, and somewhat conspicuous, building known only as Gambit's Bar.

He pushed open the door and stepped inside the main room, only to step to the side of the doorway as soon as the door shut. He stood at around six feet in height, and underneath his armor one could tell he was almost entirely muscle. On his back hung a rather large steel sword and a pair of smaller blades adorned his hips. He wore a shirt of fine chain mail and armored boots, but his pants and undershirt were baggy cloth. Clasped around his throat, and laid out beneath his largest sword, was a cloak of fur.

His green eyes inspected the few others within the bar, glad to have arrived when not many were around. As he saw the robotic bartenders, he thought for a moment, wondering what, exactly, they were. He didn't like being in such a new place, but this bar couldn't be too much different from the tavern and pubs he'd visited during his travels, could it? Figuring it would be in his best interest to watch for a little longer, he seated himself at a table off to the side, taking care to keep his back to the wall.

Xyphos sighed and wished there were actually human waiters. With a slightly grunt, he stood and moved over to the bar's counter to order some food and perhaps a drink. When he reached the metallic ordering system, he sighed and scratched his head, not knowing how to begin placing his order. He'd known machines back home, simple things to help with farming or building, but nothing so sophisticated.

He frowned at the screen and poked it once with a finger, causing it to switch to the main menu. He jumped back and pulled the large sword off his back, pointing it at the computer in confusion. It would take him time to get used to the sights and sounds of this new city. Under his breath he swore to find the man who had told him to come here and make sure he got more information the next time.

Seeing no danger from the computer, Xyphos straightened and returned the blade to it's place on his back. He was tired of having to deal with the mechanics of this new place, but loathe to ask for assistance. Instead, he called out, "Does anyone know where I could find myself some food and drink?"

Xyphos turned as he was spoken to. He chuckled at the mention of the larder and, though he suspected he could've gotten to the food, he was not one for thievery. As the Bartender appeared however, he reached for his blade, only to see what the man was. He relaxed, though only slightly, before saying, "I'll have a pint of mead, some bread, and a bit of meat. Also, if I could get myself a room here for the time being, that would be good as well."

He would've smiled were he more lighthearted, but the amount of time he'd spent on the road, and the things he'd witnessed, had forever changed him from the kinder, more open soul he once was. He reached for his money pouch and grimaced, remembering that he'd been robbed less than a tenday back while he was traveling.

Xyphos wished he had been more careful on the road but, seeing no recourse, he drew one of the swords on his belt and offered it to the man. The blade wasn't anything special, just a sword made of steel. It was even standard issue for the military life he'd left behind, so he wasn't too unhappy to part with it.

"I'm sorry. I have no money. Perhaps this will cover the cost?" he asked as he proffered the sword. It would be hard for him, and he knew he'd have to get a job sometime soon. Either that, or he'd have to find a way for someone to pay for his meals and lodging. With quick movements, he took the sword's sheath off his belt as well, returning the blade inside for safety.

Xyphos turned to look at aiedon approached him. He had turned in time to miss the change of his blade to money, and his attention now remained on the boy before him. He looked him over and smiled.

"Thank you, but I prefer to pay my own dues. Th'name's Xyphos Firebrand. Who might you be?" He wasn't particularly comfortable meeting new people, having always been the kind to be in surly in a corner, but he understood the potential value of knowing people in the area. He turned back and scooped up the leftover coins, figuring it was the money not needed, and put them in a small pouch that held a pair of amethyst crystals.

Xyphos took a gulp of his mead as the youth before him spoke. It was decent, with good flavor, but not the best he'd ever had. As he placed the mug back on the wood he asked, "Bright-flame? Interesting name." He looked the boy over and, familiar with magic even if he couldn't use it, said, "You aren't much of a swordsman, I take it." The statement was blunt, coarse, and perhaps rude, but from his experience, Xyphos knew it tended to be good to say.

Xyphos pulled out a small knife and cut himself some of the ham, enjoying it's sweetness before chewing on the bread for a bit. He reached up to his shoulder and pulled down his preferred weapon, a larger steel hand-and-a-half sword with a blade that was thick and strong. He spun it once and then drove the tip into the wooden floor with a solid thunk.

"More or less. But then again, you'd have to get close to use those, whereas my sword could get to you afore yours could get to me." He chuckled gruffly and took another bite of ham, wishing he'd not had to give up one of his swords to pay for it. Sure, he could have accepted the boy's help and had his food paid for, but one such as him would never allow himself to accept charity. Being a Blademaster came with dignity.

Xyphos noted the boy's change of subject and pursed his lips in thought. He could reveal that he was here because his village had been ransacked then burnt to the ground, or that he had left the military in favor of training to perfection with edged weapons, but instead he spoke as though he were the common traveler.

Xyphos noted the boy's change of subject and pursed his lips in thought. He could reveal that he was here because his village had been ransacked then burnt to the ground, or that he had left the military in favor of training to perfection with edged weapons, but instead he spoke as though he were the common traveler.

"I came from lands far away to the south in order to do what most any traveler wants: to seek fortune, fame, and honor." Although there was more to his tale than that, his words were true. The swarthy man looked around and noticed that several more people had entered since he had ordered his food. Hopefully it would keep him from attracting any unwanted attention. Although the bar had seemed pleasant enough until now, he figured that, like anywhere that provided alcohol, this place had more than its fair share of thugs. Unfortunately for the thugs, he'd become the target of their bullying and, once the fight ensued, he would have to leave town as he'd done so many times before.

Xyphos shrugged. "For now, I plan on resting. I've been on the road for a few months now, and I haven't had time to properly rest myself. What about you? What brought you here?" He had noticed the reptilian head poked through one of the windows, but had never thought that such creatures could exist.

There were tales and legends in his homeland of mean who rode upon dragons, but they had always been used as ways to tell children about ways to survive and other practical lessons. He had never expected to see such a beast in reality, or that such a thing might be peaceful enough not to kill him.

"I see," he said. "I would aid you, but I'm, not partial to magik, nor have I the influence to gather any troops." Xyphos finished his meal and mead, leaning back against the counter with a contented sigh. He felt a slight twinge of energy rush through his body and heard a roar of air whistle past him, causing him to start in alarm, but it was only in his mind that the things happened.

In the back of his mind, he felt a presence that had long been growing, like a plant reaching for the sun. He could tell that it wasn't part of him, and yet it was a part of him all the same. He brushed it away, as he had always done, and relaxed when his mind became his own once more.

Xyphos nodded and pulled his sword from the floor with a savage yank. He returned it to his back and rolled his shoulders, making it more comfortable.

"I can, but what would I be able to do. I've already been in a military before, and I'd prefer to avoid doing so again." He grimaced and wondered what else there was to do in the city. He'd seen the gardens from a distance and planned to go there eventually, but he figured that he might take a stroll out to the beach for his first night in a new place.

Xyphos sighed and noticed he was being watched by a woman with a staff. He acted as though he were paying no attention and instead turned as a statue rose out of the ground. He figured that it, and the chill that came with it, were no more than a magician's trickery.

"I suggest you leave it," He said to the boy. "Being in the military is a life nobody should want, and I was lucky to escape as easily as I did." He rubbed a gloved hand over his face and watched the cat that prowled upon the counter. He reached out a hand to pet it as it came by, not thinking that it could be anything more than a cat.

Xyphos watched the cat drop to the far side of the counter. He winced and shut his eyes as the sounds of shifting bone and sinew, only to open them and see an attractive woman now standing behind the bar. He pulled a small dagger out of his left boot and held it at her, wary of anyone who could change shape at will.

"Who are you, witch?" he asked, unsure of what else to call her.

Xyphos pulled his knife back and returned it to the hidden sheath in his boot. This woman would test his patience, he was sure of that. With sure movements, he turned to face her fully before speaking. When he did speak, his voice was ragged and filled with a slight tone of respect.

"I am a Blademaster, able to use almost any edged weapon lethally. From what I've seen of you..." He paused, taking a moment to look her up and down with slight appreciation. "You appear to be a trickster and a mage." He said the word derisively, showing his obvious dislike towards anything magical unless it as an enchantment upon arms or armor.

Xyphos shifted uncomfortably as she got closer. As she sat down, he opened his hand revealing several small blades he had managed to take out of their sheaths while she moved.

"I believe you have an idea of what I mean. And I want you to know I could've killed you with any of these in the last minute and a half. However, you've intrigued me, and that has stayed my hands. So, who are you?" he asked as politely as he could, still unnerved by the woman in front of him. He was having a hard time figuring out how to act around her, as she'd caught him off guard.

Xyphos put away the thin blades and offered his hand to shake. "Well met Kaara. I'm Xyphos. And no, mage's are no prettier than witches, unless nature gifts them as such. They do, however, tend to be the most flippant of magik users, so most consider them to be novices."

He chuckled only the slightest amount and sighed, watching her closely before becoming somewhat bored. He pulled the sword from his belt and inspected it, checking the edge and the hilt. A few moments later, he had a whetstone out and was busy sharpening the blade to a razor-edge.

Xyphos continued to work for a while, the rasp of stone against steel puncturing the silence. He was in a semi-meditative state at the moment, due to the care he took when sharpening his weapons. He looked up after a moment and smiled.

"I grew up around them, to be honest. My father was a soldier, and he trained me at a very young age how to use a blade. There were...a lot of bandits and thieves who would raid houses like mine, so I learned to protect myself, and my family." He shrugged and continued. "Then he went off and got himself killed in a war, which meant I had to take his place. I showed that I was peerless with the blade, and got special training to become what I am today. Although it might not appear to be so, I have about seven different knives on me right now, along with my two swords." He sighed and went back to his work.

"It's been too long," he muttered, as if speaking to the blade he was sharpening.

Xyphos looked up once again as she spoke. He did enjoy her voice, and her looks, but he was a terribly practical man, and it showed quite ridiculously sometimes. "I'd say so, but then again, I may not be the best to judge things on beauty, as I find the curve of a blade just as alluring." He chuckled and then reached into his pack after sheathing his sword, pulling out a small lyre.

"You say you like music? Well, I may not be the most adept with the strings, but I could play a little something from home." he smiled and plucked the strings experimentally, making sure they were still in tune.

Xyphos only nodded as she spoke. He began to hum and tap his foot to get the rhythm before he struck the first notes. His fingers, despite him having said he wasn't very good, danced across the strings, plucking them rapidly and letting the haunting tune roll away. As he played, he began to sing in his native tongue, his voice a tenor to contrast the higher notes of the lyre.

The song was a tale of two men, friends who were torn apart by the love of a girl. The longer he played, the more of the story he told, eventually arriving at the climax- a fight between the two men as they struggled to win over the girl's heart. As their swords clashed, the girl left with a third man, and the friends lowered their blades, vowing to never let a girl ruin their bond again.

From the hotel above the bar stepped a somewhat swarthy man with a larger than average sword strapped to his back. His red hair shifted slightly, a few strands falling out of the loose ponytail he wore it in, as he looked about. The fight interested him, but it had yet to truly escalate to violence. He could probably find a way to join in, but from what he'd been hearing and seeing coming and going from the bar over the last few days had convinced him that simple steel would not be enough to win anything.

Instead of causing the fight to erupt fully, Xyphoes chose to skirt the edge of the room until he got to the counter. He ordered a glass of gin and then seated himself, content to watch the argument as it slowly became more and more violent. He'd managed to find a local job as a gore-cleaner at the Arena, and it showed in the bulging pouch of coins at his belt.

Xyphos raised an eyebrow as the argument simply dissolved and vanished, as if nothing had even happened. He grumbled something about people being all talk and no action nowadays before watching as his drink arrived. he handed a few coins to the tender and then scooped up his drink, enjoying the burning sensation that the alcohol had as it raced down his throat.

He wondered about the origins of the argument but, since it had seemingly gone away at this point, figured that there wasn't much he could figure out. He hoped the tension would return, if only because he enjoyed watching two people go at it in the most intimate of ways aside from one. Nothing made people prove themselves like battle. Nothing.

Xyphos sighed and leaned back against the counter, listening to the belch and smiling. He'd heard better, but that one rated well up among the top. He finished his drink and set the glass down, wondering whether or not he ought to get another. He closed his eyes and shrugged slightly, as if holding a conversation with himself. He would be alright for a little while.

Shudders of movement caught in the corner of his eye tipped him off to the dhampir leaving it's host body and he watched, rather disgusted, as it pulled itself from the corpse. He'd never actually seen the real form of a dhampir, but he did now, and it was a bit revolting to him. It might have been that it was several times lager than him and still able to fit in the body of a human, but it could also have been the fact that it appeared for all the world to be no more than a mass of gel, given life.

Xyphos thanked the bartender for his drink, though it was more than he'd expected. He deftly snatched away a glass from behind the counter as he leaned over it, managing to avoid being caught by sheer luck, and poured some of the ice water into it. Ever since he'd breathed fire earlier, he'd become more and more thirsty. He assumed that some magician had bespelled him while he slept, which had caused what had happened. Being a man of the blade, he'd vowed to find and kill the man responsible, but if it were a mage, he'd be hard-pressed to properly find him.

Figuring his luck might turn if he calmed himself by talking to some of the other patrons in the bar tonight, he stood and walked, pitcher and glass in hand, over to Fleur, noting the sheaf of music in her hands. "Do you play?" he asked, rather bluntly.

Xyphos let her words roll over him like a wave, listening carefully. He couldn't say he knew who she was, having been knew to the more civilized areas of the world. With a shrug and another swig of his water, he responded, "I'm' afraid I've not had the pleasure. I'm still rather new to the area, and being a sword-fighting instructor doesn't tend to bring much time to enjoy the arts." He held back on introducing himself, still hesitant. She seemed to have a chill aura of calm, something that threw him off. He was so used to people having auras full of energy and thought.
