Asteria City

ImageAsteria is a sprawling coastal city located along the Eastern Seaboard that serves as one of the major hubs for international travel to and from Terra. Possessing one of the largest spaceports on the Eastern Seaboard, Asteria boasts a massive level of traffic and is a prime tourist location as well.

Asteria contains several prominent academies of higher education, museums, schools of art, corporate businesses, and numerous historical landmarks. Among its many local attractions, Asteria also contains a prominent NPA field office, and a large naval base is situated across the bay from the city.

Asteria has strong divisions of culture and ethnicity due to the high concentration of immigrants - both legal and illegal. In particular the city possesses an especially prominent number of Shintenchi and Caprican immigrants as well as a noteworthy concentration of scythian illegals.

Asteria enjoys a high level of prosperity, but the large abundance of illegal immigrants has sowed an element of desperation into the poorer regions of the city. It is often unwise for tourists to visit Asteria without taking care to learn what districts are best avoided after dark.

"Yeah, sure, of course. Is everything alright?" Sonja asked.

She turned to get a look at the television herself. She had seen this particular story a few times It was getting a lot of air time, and there was some contention over whether or not the man's injuries had been attained from the street fighting, or from the police during the arrest.

It was only one of many like it lately.

The New Caprica Police Precincts where becoming a common topic of the mornings headlines. The news reporter on the television went on to talk about last weeks incident of a Terran born woman who had been beaten and raped after being pulled over for a traffic violation, and last months story of a man who had been hospitalized after a vicious beating during an arrest on suspicion of assaulting a Caprican woman which he was later acquitted of. Two months ago it was vandalism as a pair of New Caprica Police Officers trashed the business of an uncooperative Terran, in full view of witnesses - none of whom would testify on the matter.

The woman on the television went on to state that in all of these cases, the lack of evidence, lack of voices willing to testify, or simply the lack of money to afford lawyers to match those of their assailants had resulted in little action being taken against the New Caprica Police. With much of the police force and infrastructure of New Caprica maintained by ethnic Capricans, the neighborhoods of New Caprica were proving to be increasingly hostile towards other ethnic divisions, and likewise, the Terran neighborhoods where growing increasingly hostile to those of Aschen ethnicity.

Sonja had more than understated the tensions going on.

"Yeah. It's all Gucci, give me a second." The woman answered as she stood up, eyes lingering on the news report for a second. "I'll be back." She said, heading for the bathrooms. She reached a hand up to her left ear as she stepped into the ladies room, using her free hand to lock the door behind herself.

"Veritas, heard of an Adriaan Kavaki?" She asked, "Patronus. Volarian." A woman's voice said through Phinx's earpiece. "He was to be liason to the Invictus for the Patronus. Recently arrested in connection to an underground fighting ring." The woman continued.

"The Capricans are gonna kill this guy, right?" Phinx asked, "Unsure, likely. The New Caprica police are said to be very corrupt. Silencing of a witness is crucial in most criminal corruption." The Invictus agent told Phinx, "Okay, uh... get Saito out here and Sandman. Have them meet me at my hotel."

Phinx furrowed her brows for a second, embracing the somewhat weird smell of the bathroom before unlcoking the door behind her and heading back out to Sonja.

"Hey, Sonja. Are the New Caprican police really as bad as they sound?" She asked as she approached the woman, moving to slide back into her seat. "I want to know."

Sonja hesitated at answering the inquiry. Even out here, far from the Empire's reach, there was risk in what she said that might be construed as treason. She picked her words carefully, as was hinted by the level tone of her voice.

"It's not just the police. There's a lot going on out here, and the police are getting more violent in retaliation. There's a lot of bad going around. You know that. There's some parts of the city, it's just not safe for an Aschen to walk alone anymore. And I don't mean me. I mean Aschen immigrants, legal citizens of the TNG."

She had skirted the topic earlier, but that was difficult with Phinx asking more direct questions.

"Shit gets like that sometimes, but... ain't no excuse for the police to be acting up." Phinx said, "Then again, they're Aschen cops. And considering their history with Terra, well... I get it." Phinx told Sonja, "As long as people leave you alone though, I won't have to set this city on fire."

"I could do it too." She said, "Would take a lot of gasoline and matches, but it can be done." She joked, glancing back up at the television for a moment.

The Invictus leader ran a hand through her hair, letting her brown eyes rest on Sonja. "Has anyone been messing with you?" She asked the club owner. "I'm asking because I can go take care of it for you. I have my ways of getting bullies to back off."

Taro stretched as he lounged in his throne, acting as Ra, prince of the dragon court. It wasn't all fun and games. right now, there was a gathering, dancing, music, and feasting, of a sort, all being on the menu. Of course, it was all to hide one small issue. His Belial, known as Isis, his seneschal, was furious in the controlled manner he had only ever seen him in for drastic occasions. Given that their youngest son was now missing, he wasn't overly surprised. He was upset as well.

Hence the party. It would loosen the lips of the court, and they would be able to find some whisper of his youngest's disappearance, some hint of where his new boy had gone. He looked over the ball room and sighed, a human thing, but one that served its purpose. A gesture of his fingers brought a server to him, or rather, a meal. Sitting up, he pulled the captive human, dressed and dolled up to Bel's tastes, and smiled, holding the boy there. He did have preferences, and this teen suited them well. Untouched, rich in untamed magic, he enjoyed this one's blood. The teen was kept well because of this, and would be until he aged past Taro's tastes.

Then he would be given to the masses to feed on as they pleased. With practice the teen offered his neck, and stiffled a gasp at the painful bite. There was nothing comfortable about this, and the draw of his blood leaving his body caused an ache in his veins the teen could not identify, but knew that it hurt. Still, the meal was, as always, quickly finished. With a smirk, he pushed the boy off and then sought out his Bel's eyes.

Bel met them, a muted fury in them and Taro nodded, standing and moving to join in with the vampires in the court, joining the dancing as he listened and questioned, seeking answers.

It was just trading one set of formalities for another, and one set of clothing for another, with both equally far from her own taste. Hanging back from most of the dancing, Catherine kept careful watch on this particular gathering, knowing something that most of the court did not. Brandon was alive, albeit in an undead sort of fashion, and much to the chagrin of the rulers of the court was completely and totally missing. It seemed that in the intervening years, while she had sought refuge within Tatianna's own court, that the vampires had run amok.

It did however seem par for the course, with MCU largely out of the picture, powerful groups like the Court of the Dragon could rise to prominence within the city. 'It's still a mess... but...' She thought to herself, keeping her thoughts carefully shielded in amongst this group. One could never tell when there was another psychic listening in on your own thoughts. While the Fae were different, the politics of a court still applied, whoever had the power made the rules. An with her having been largely absent for years now, it was certainly not her who held any power within the court.

'Oh my... is this a lover's quarrel I see?' Catherine thought largely out of amusement as she watched Bel and Taro from across the room, calmly sipping at her glass of wine.

Much of the court had heard that a fledgling was missing, but only a handful knew whose fledgling and who that fledgling was. Bel was done working the crowd though, and had caught sight of some one unexpected. Working his way through the crowd, the finely dressed man, dressed in what passed for women's fashion in this court, as usual, he came closer to the woman, one fo the few here enjoying the alcohol, rather than one of the scantily clad walking meals.

He offered Catherine a pleasant closed mouth smile as he drew near. "It has been some time since you came to court, ambassador. Have you grown weary of communicating by messenger?" That had been their primary way of communication for some time. Bel's voice was gentle and almost feminine in nature. Her smiled to her, amused. It had been a very long time since he had seen this court member in person. There had been no issue with this of course. It allowed them to keep his sweet son in isolation a little easier, and kept her from even getting a whisper of the boy's location.

"Or have you come to the court for another reason?"

"I'm sure it would do nothing more than please your highness if that were all I ever did, however no, I have been requested to give Council a deposition on the fire years ago." Catherine explained surveying Bel's attire for the evening. It was a little alarming once one learned Bel was male, but it didn't much bother her. Gender and their roles within the Fae could be just as strange at the end of the day.

Taking another sip from her wine glass, she mulled his next question over. "I thought it polite to visit while I'm here." She said plainly, saying nothing of what she knew about Brandon. For all Bel was aware of was the Council's summons, and the fact that Catherine like many would drag her feet on the way. "I've heard you've lost a fledgling from your court your highness, is this true?" Catherine asked shifting her weight slightly, the beading of her long, low cut, clinging gown catching the dim light. "Surely they'll die without their sire's aid."

"You know you are always welcome here. Had you let us know you were coming, we would have readied your rooms for you." As it was, a glance to a nearby eavesdropping servant sent them scrambling to see to just that. He was telling the truth too. They had courted her for her power. She was welcome to return to the court anytime, to remind people who owned her, who she served. "And unfortunately yes. One of our youngest members has gone missing." He admitted with ease, offering her a smile. "He's a clever fledgling though. And he should be fine to hunt on his own." Calling Brandon a fledgling was, at this point, a stretch.

Though it remained that he was missing, and that was upsetting. "Have you heard of him from outside the court perhaps? His sire is eager for any news." That much was true enough, and it didn't reveal who the sire was either. The leather and lace fashion of the court did look nice on the other. Still, he paused a moment and frowned at the goblet. "but first, I can have a refreshment brought for you that's a bit more suitable than wine, if you'd like. We have some fae blood that is simply delicious I can send for. I'm sure you're used to the taste, given where you normally are, of course, but I find I enjoy the taste of magic on my tongue."

Catherine let Bel's pandering wash over her like nothing more than noise. The man came across as anxious and obnoxious, and she had little intent to feed into the anxiety or annoyance more than she had to. "Thank you your highness, however I will only be here long enough to complete my business with the Council. I would hate to impose for longer than that." She replied cooly, seeing that Bel did know that Brandon was missing but nothing of her own knowledge about the situation.

"I can't say that I have. I've only just returned from her majesty Tatianna's court." Catherine remarked with a slight shrug. She had heard, but she also had practice lying about what she knew, more than most members of the court who seemed to eventually grow impatient and tip their own hand. "... I'll pass thank you." She added with a slight edge to her voice. "Wine will more than suffice for now."

"Oh I insist." Bel said, smiling winningly. "You do have a suite here after all. I'd hate for you to stay in a hotel, rather in luxury." He said, pleased. "I know you sold your home after your dear nephew's death, after all." And as far as Bel knew, no one in the other's social circle had remained in the city. "Really, we don't mind at all, and we could even send up a selection later, so you don't have to hunt." No need to be weak because you didn't want blood.

"Besides, I'm sure the council will take their time in coming to a decision. They always do." and they would continue to do so. There were now two vampires on the council. Both had their allegiance to the Dragon Court. It had taken centuries of maneuvering just so, and the death of Sir McBride had been what they had truly needed. the old dragon had stonewalled them too long. Luckily, his replacement was not quite to subtle at McBride has been."In the mean time, could you let us know of any unusual...activity...in the city? The missing fledgling has a bit of trouble with blood lust if he's unattended for too long."

This was one of those instances where Catherine wasn't entirely sure what Bel wanted. He was offering to ready a suite at the spur of the moment and tempting her with things she would much rather avoid. But, she was tired from her trip, although wary about feeding on anything other than normal fare. "Selling the home wasn't the easiest choice, but it did make some things easier." Catherine commented. The time Alexander spent with the Council and she spent within Tatianna's court almost eliminated the need for any real residences. "I'll stay, and I appreciate the offer of a selection, but I'll be fine without it." Catherine added refusing the offer for a second time.

Sighing slightly she looked out across the room past Bel, seeing him, but not seeing him. Her mind was elsewhere at the moment, already largely tuning his inane babbling out. "Of course your highness, but you realize I don't tend to get out much... right?"

"If you insist dear." He agreed easily enough, now that he had what he wanted. If she was here, there was little chance of her running into said fledgling out there. As much as he wanted his son back, he knew that if the boy met his aunt, then there was little chance he would be back in court. The two were too clever by half. "And I know. The child's bloodlust though is not yet tamed, and he's a bit of a danger to humans still."

He didn't elaborate. Instead, he glanced around and smiled. "If the poor child loses control, no doubt the council will hear about it. I know you still have ears on the council. We're just asking for a heads up."

Taro had been watching a few moments. He often watched Bel, or kept an eye on him at least, at these functions. Now, the taller man began to make his way over, intending on finding out why Catherine was in the court in the first place. She was not the sort to merely drop by.

"That sounds like quite the predicament you've found yourselves in." Catherine commented dryly, really having little interest in whether or not Brandon's bloodlust had been tamed. He would do a fine job of keeping himself under control, that much she was certain. She didn't really didn't have much of an interest in what sort of stupid choices the Dragon Court rulers made, but Tatianna would most certainly be interested in this latest fiasco.

"I'm sure the Council will hear about, but like you said.. they move painfully slow, even for most immortals." She pointed out, rephrasing Bel's exact words for him. She doubted that would happen, and likely targets were being very carefully picked to be individuals who wouldn't be missed.

"Beloved." Taro interrupted, wrapping his arms around Bel, and setting his chin on the other's head. He offered Catherine little more than a nod and held his lover against his front. "Gossiping about the council?" He teased gently, trying to offer what soothing he could. He dismissed Catherine from his thoughts for a moment and focused on Bel, adoration in his eyes. "Or about our missing fledgling?" He murmured and then sighed, meeting Catherine's eyes after a moment.

"My Isis is in a tizzy, I fear. The fledgling was dear to both of us. His sire can still feel the bond, luckily, or we'd worry about hunters." And hunters were the last thing any of them wanted.

Catherine could tell when she was being deliberately snubbed, and knew that Taro was the one to take the most care with. "Your partner was curious as to why I happened to be here, and I merely explained that it was impolite to not show up while attending to business with the Council." She remarked blithely, keeping her tone polite. It was no secret that she wasn't terribly fond of the vampires, but at the same time was more than willing to see who would last the longest in whatever insane game of chess they thought they were playing with her.

Meeting Taro's gaze with her own, unflinchingly, she wasn't about to let on what she knew. "Well I suppose that is good news then." Catherine said calmly, knowing full well how much this was like playing with fire. However, it did appear that Brandon had been unable to completely severe the psychic bond between himself and the pair. Obtaining the tools to do that may take longer than she was comfortable with.

"Being impolite has hardly stopped you in the past." He murmured, eyes closed as he seemingly relaxed against his lover. He smiled and ran a hand over Bel's form. "Isis, darling. I'll entertain our ambassador for a bit." Bel frowned, then nodded and slipped out of Taro's arms, placing a kiss on the other's cheek.

"Play nice, beloved." He murmured. the seneschal then slipped into the crowds, carefully rumor mongering. Taro watched him leave and smiled, admiring the other's form.

there was a moment of silence as he admired his lover. "An eternity and I've yet to grow tired of that form. I am sure you understand. You've known Councilor Summers for quite some time yourself, after all." Taro commented, eyes still on Bel as the other worked the court with expert ease.

"Court politics is something else altogether." Catherine pointed out, knowing full well what the fae queen expected. Politeness and civility were two things that Tatianna had made sure that she remembered once she had returned to the court full time again. The monarch had at least made that much clear, that she would not have her night commander acting like some human without respect and honor for the unseen; especially the veil. "Especially when the majority of your time within the last century has been spent with the mundane." She added while taking another sip from her glass.

"I can't say that I do, the relationship between Alexander and myself is different." She pointed out to the prince. Catherine had never been terribly good with romantic entanglements or relationships, most times preferring to abstain from them altogether to avoid the drama that accompanied them.

"It is much shorter, to be sure." he agreed and then snorted. "And you two have been the last ones to realise you were together." It had been obvious to everyone, from what was said. He smiled and shook his head. that was the nature of some people. They were simply oblivious to the ones who adored them. He was glad he had found his Bel young and neither had that issue.

"I do apologize, of course, that we hadn't been able to do more for your nephew. I know much of your seclusion these past years has been due to his loss." they had done plenty of course, though it was a shame the formerly handsome man now only was truly handsome if he was well fed. He had considered magic, to help him some, but the fledgling was so resistant to his new life still.

Catherine offered a slight, annoyed sigh, the relationship she shared with Alexander was difficult to describe at best, and easy for both to avoid at worst. Setting her glass on a tray as a waiter came by, she laced her hands and held them in front of her; dark ruby polish contrasting sharply against her fair, pale skin. "Our relationship is.. complicated. Allow me to leave it at that." She said plainly. Being the daughter of a high ranking Councilor, and married to another Councilor with ties to many old gods made life interesting sometimes.

"But, please don't apologize." Catherine replied shaking her head, waving off Taro's comment. "He wasn't afraid of dying, I think he was afraid of what he would miss, and in the end... he was loved and at peace." She added with a pained, careful smile. Brandon had always been eager to make up for whatever he perceived he had missed as a child, and even so as an adult had been willing to take chances, afraid of missing something that would be important.

It certainly didn't seem like she had any inkling of the truth. That meant little of course, as Catherine had always been an excellent verbal opponent. He offered a smile. "His loss is still felt." It was too, given he was gone now. The boy had also lost his necromancy entirely, from what everyone could tell, and that had been much of the reason for his turning. Still, he was already powerful, for a vampire of his years.

"May I get you another glass of wine? I know you prefer it." However ridiculous it was to do so. Still, she was allowed her eccentricities. They all were, at their age. He doubted she actually needed more than a mouthful a year to sustain herself, and he had no doubt her husband served well for that meal.

"Very much." She agreed. So far it seemed that that was one hurdle over with, however she had been unable to turn down Bel's insistence that she stay there at the court until she completed her business with the Council. That made things all the more difficult, especially since there was the likely hood of more creative or perhaps brutish versions of magic to contend with though, and privacy would likely be at a premium too. She suspected that Bel was likely going to ignore her refusal of any after party guests and send them up to her suite anyway.

"If you wish." Catherine replied, knowing that he found her insistence of not feeding or drinking in front of others strange. Likely she would go and find herself something more than wine later, but without the aid of Bel or Taro. Though, the pair didn't need to know how much summoning the gate to the fae's realm took out of her. Currently the golden, bejeweled key hung on a delicate chain around her neck, nestled safely above the plunging neckline of her evening gown cut to show assets at their best advantage. "And yes, I do prefer it."

Oh she would likely find a selection of young men wearing little more than skin tight leather pants in her suite later. Bel enjoyed petty revenges like that, and wasn't a fan of Catherine to begin with. "I would hate to be accused of being a poor host." Taro flagged down a server and selected two goblets, one for himself, and one for her. Both contained wine. let it not be said he was not sensitive to other's preferences, after all.

He offered her one of the goblets. "I hope you enjoy it. You should have brought your husband though. He would have been treasure to entertain." If nothing else it would have been amusing. Summers was also easy to work over, being a soldier and a forthright one above all else.

"I find it hard to believe anyone would accuse you of being a poor host your grace." Catherine demurred as she took the goblet from him. She wouldn't have accused him of being a poor host, especially if one liked decadence and luxury at their fingertips. An she would easily admit that there were some comforts here that were just as nice as those back home in her own apartments in the fae queen's palace. However, she found herself struggling to embrace the other court's methods; they seemed largely the same as the fae, but yet vastly different.

"Ah.. my husband is currently indisposed with Council unfortunately. I doubt you would have appreciated his company either way."

Taro smiled. "You are kind." he murmured, pleased with the compliment. "And perhaps this is true. He and I have very different world views. Still, I care about all members of the court, and their spouses." He murmured, smiling to her. "He is always welcome with you." Though not on his own without advance notice. In general, he'd prefer advance notice when it came to anything with Summers.

"Is he doing well, by the way? I can't imagine the council work is easy on the two of you." He murmured, honest about it too. Taro was ruthless, but family was important to him, above even court matters. That was the simple truth when it came down to it. His family trumped even the court. Their was a reason he had allowed Bel to turn Brandon, and it was a simple desire to have yet one more child.
